Lockdown Mode is an extreme, optional security measure for people who may be targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, including mercenary spyware. It is not a routine privacy setting for every Mac owner: Apple says, “Most people are never targeted by this type of attack.” The protection works by reducing the number of messages, web technologies, invitations, calls, and accessory connections your Mac will accept, so normal tasks may become less convenient.

What Lockdown Mode does
Lockdown Mode reduces potential attack surface by placing strict limits on selected apps, websites, and device features. The idea is to remove or constrain complicated functions that could be abused in a targeted attack. That stronger boundary comes with an intentional loss of compatibility.

Apple describes the feature as an “extreme, optional protection” for people facing highly sophisticated cyberattacks. Examples include individuals whose work, public profile, legal activity, journalism, activism, political activity, or personal circumstances could make them a specific target. The setting is not presented as a measured necessity for the general population, and Apple’s October 2025 support guidance states that most people are never targeted by this type of attack.

Lockdown Mode is built into supported Apple operating systems; you do not need to buy hardware, install a security utility, or subscribe to a service. Its value depends on the threat you face and whether you can accept websites and communication features working differently.
Should you use it?
Make the decision as a security-versus-functionality choice, not as a simple “more security is always better” switch. The mode makes the most sense when there is a credible reason to believe that you could be singled out by a well-resourced attacker and you have a practical way to handle the compatibility limits.
Lockdown Mode is a reasonable fit when
- You have received a credible warning that you may be targeted by mercenary spyware or another highly sophisticated attack.
- Your work or public role makes targeted intrusion a realistic concern rather than a general fear of ordinary malware.
- You can tolerate blocked message attachments, reduced website compatibility, restricted invitations or calls, and extra approval for some accessories.
- You are prepared to update and protect every supported Apple device you use, rather than relying on a Mac-only setting.
It is usually a poor fit when
- You are looking for a routine speed, privacy, or anti-malware setting with no specific high-end threat indication.
- Your daily work depends on complex websites, unusual web applications, frequent file attachments, or accessories that must connect without approval.
- You would treat blocked content as a software fault and repeatedly disable protections whenever a site or message behaves differently.
Lockdown Mode cannot compensate for an unpatched operating system, reused passwords, compromised accounts, or unsafe handling of a device. Keep ordinary security practices in place even when the mode is enabled.
Prepare before enabling Lockdown Mode
Update your Apple devices
Install the latest available software on your Mac and other supported Apple devices before turning the feature on. Apple documents protections that vary by operating-system version, and current software provides the fuller set of available defenses. Update the devices you actually use, including an iPhone or iPad that shares accounts and communications with the Mac.
Map your essential workflows
Write down the websites, communication channels, file types, video-call invitations, and physical accessories you cannot do without. This is not a compatibility guarantee: a site that works today can change, and Apple’s protections can differ by software version. It is a practical check that you have an alternative before enabling a restrictive mode.
Plan for device-by-device coverage
Lockdown Mode is enabled separately on Mac, iPhone, and iPad. A Mac setting does not automatically protect the rest of your Apple ecosystem. Apple recommends enabling the mode on other supported devices for complete protection. An iPhone running Lockdown Mode also enables it on a paired Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later; the setting cannot be toggled directly on the watch.

How to turn on Lockdown Mode on a Mac
- Update macOS and the other supported Apple devices you intend to protect.
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar.
- Scroll to Lockdown Mode.
- Click Turn On.
- Confirm by choosing Turn On Lockdown Mode.
- Click Turn On & Restart. Enter the Mac login password if requested.
Your Mac must restart to enable the mode according to Apple’s current support guidance. The exact wording can vary with the macOS version, but the location remains in Privacy & Security. If you do not see the setting, first verify that the Mac is running a supported, fully updated version of macOS.
What changes after you enable it
The following are the main categories of restrictions Apple describes. They are examples of the mode’s behavior, not a promise that every effect will appear identically on every Mac or software release.
Messages and attachments
Most attachment types in Messages are blocked, with some image exceptions. Link previews are unavailable, so a message containing a URL may no longer display the familiar preview card. A blocked attachment is a deliberate protection, not evidence that the sender or your Mac is malfunctioning.
Plan another trusted way to exchange files when necessary, such as a channel that your organization has already approved. Do not weaken the setting merely because an unexpected attachment is inconvenient; targeted attacks often rely on getting a victim to open specially crafted content.
Web browsing and complex sites
Lockdown Mode blocks certain complex web technologies. As a result, a site may load slowly, fail to load, or lose specific functions. Fonts or images can also be affected. The impact is most noticeable on web applications that depend on advanced scripts, embedded viewers, interactive editors, or other sophisticated browser behavior.

Apple services, invitations, and FaceTime
Some incoming invitations and calls are blocked unless there has been prior interaction. Certain Apple service features are unavailable. This can affect people trying to contact you for the first time, even when they are legitimate.
Tell important contacts in advance that new invitations or calls may not reach you normally. Use an established communication path for first contact, and treat an unexpected request to change your security settings as suspicious.
Accessory connections on Apple-silicon Mac laptops
On a Mac laptop with Apple silicon, the computer must be unlocked and you must explicitly approve accessory connections. This adds a deliberate checkpoint for peripherals that might otherwise connect while the Mac is locked.
Expect the extra approval when attaching a dock, storage device, adapter, or other accessory. If a peripheral does not work immediately, unlock the Mac and look for the approval prompt before troubleshooting the hardware itself.
Everyday use compared with Lockdown Mode
| Decision area | Ordinary device use | With Lockdown Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Threat fit | Designed for normal compatibility and general security maintenance. | Intended for people who may face highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. |
| Attack surface | More supported features and content types are available. | Selected apps, websites, and features are restricted to reduce possible attack paths. |
| Messages | Attachments and link previews generally work as supported by the operating system. | Most attachment types are blocked, some images are allowed, and link previews are unavailable. |
| Web compatibility | Complex web technologies can run normally. | Some technologies are blocked; pages may be slow, incomplete, or unavailable, with fonts or images potentially affected. |
| Invitations and calls | Incoming Apple service invitations and FaceTime calls follow normal behavior. | Some are blocked unless there has been prior interaction, and some features are unavailable. |
| Peripherals | Accessories follow the Mac’s ordinary connection behavior. | An Apple-silicon Mac laptop must be unlocked and explicitly approve accessory connections. |
| Device coverage | Each device follows its own security settings. | You must enable the mode separately on Mac, iPhone, and iPad; a paired watch can inherit it from an iPhone. |
Enable protection on your other Apple devices
After enabling Lockdown Mode on the Mac, check your iPhone and iPad. The feature is a separate setting on each platform, so the Mac toggle does not create whole-account or whole-ecosystem coverage.
Apple prompts users to enable Lockdown Mode on other supported devices and recommends doing so for complete protection. If your iPhone is paired with an Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later, enabling the mode on the iPhone also enables it on the watch. Apple Watch does not offer a separate switch for this feature.

Think in terms of the devices that can receive the same sensitive messages, open the same links, or access the same accounts. Leaving one supported device unprotected can preserve an attack path that the Mac setting does not address.
Allow a trusted website when necessary
Safari can exclude a trusted website from its WebKit restrictions. This restores some functionality for that site while leaving Lockdown Mode enabled elsewhere, but it reduces protection for the excluded site and may increase risk. Use an exception only when the site is trusted and the function is genuinely necessary.
- Open the site in Safari on the Mac.
- Open Safari’s settings for that site.
- Deselect Enable Lockdown Mode.
- To review or manage exceptions, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Lockdown Mode.
Keep the exception list short. A site that is merely convenient is not a good reason to weaken a protection designed for a high-risk situation. Revisit exceptions after a site redesign, account change, or security warning.

A website is incomplete or will not load
First, confirm that other simple sites work and that your network is available. If only one complex site fails, its use of restricted web technology is a likely explanation. Check Safari’s Lockdown Mode website settings and decide whether the site is trusted enough to exclude. If it is not, use another service or device rather than creating an exception by default.
An attachment is missing
Messages may block the attachment type under Lockdown Mode. Ask the sender to use an established, trusted exchange method and verify the sender through a channel you already know. Do not treat an urgent demand to disable Lockdown Mode as proof that the file is safe.

Some incoming invitations and calls are blocked unless there has been prior interaction. Contact the person through a previously trusted method, establish the interaction, and then retry if appropriate. Keep in mind that the setting is designed to make unsolicited contact less capable of reaching protected features.

An accessory is not recognized
On an Apple-silicon Mac laptop, unlock the Mac and explicitly approve the accessory connection. If no prompt appears, disconnect and reconnect the device, then check its cable, power, and compatibility. The security approval requirement is expected behavior, not necessarily a hardware failure.
Use an informed security routine
Lockdown Mode works best as part of a disciplined routine. Keep macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, browsers, and important apps current. Use strong, unique account credentials and multi-factor authentication where available. Review unexpected login alerts and treat unsolicited links, attachments, and invitations as potential risks.
Before enabling the mode, tell colleagues or family members who depend on your availability which communication methods may be restricted. After enabling it, check the sites and accessories required for your work while you still have time to choose safe alternatives. Document any Safari exceptions so you know exactly which protection you have reduced.

Do not confuse a blocked feature with a guarantee that an attack is impossible. Lockdown Mode narrows selected attack surfaces; it does not make a compromised account, stolen password, unsafe backup, or social-engineering attempt harmless.
Bottom line: when Lockdown Mode makes sense on a Mac
Use Lockdown Mode when you have a credible, high-end targeted-threat concern and can accept reduced compatibility. On the Mac, the path is System Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode, followed by confirmation and a restart. Expect stricter handling of Messages attachments, complex websites, Apple invitations and FaceTime, and accessory connections. For meaningful ecosystem coverage, enable it separately on supported iPhone and iPad devices as well, remembering that a paired Apple Watch on watchOS 10 or later follows the iPhone setting.
