Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) measures the rate of heat released or absorbed by a lithium-ion cell while the cell is held near a controlled, constant temperature. Used together with voltage, current, capacity and differential-capacity data, it can separate ordinary electrochemical heat from time- and state-of-charge-dependent parasitic reactions and can expose heat-producing features associated with solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. It is not a one-button chemistry identifier: the measured signal is a composite, and a defensible interpretation requires a deliberate electrochemical protocol, a fitted heat-flow model and instrument-specific calibration.
What isothermal microcalorimetry measures
An IMC instrument tracks heat flow, usually reported as power (heat per unit time), from a cell maintained in a temperature-controlled environment. “Isothermal” means the instrument actively keeps the surrounding measurement condition close to a set temperature while detecting the small heat flux produced by the cell. The cell may be cycled, held at a voltage, rested or subjected to a current perturbation during the measurement.

The output is a heat-flow trace versus time. A peak, drift or step in that trace indicates a change in the cell’s net thermal behavior, but not automatically a single chemical reaction. Heat generated by charge-transfer losses, ionic and electronic resistance, reversible entropy changes and unwanted chemical reactions all contribute to the total signal. The value of IMC is that these contributions can be modeled and compared with simultaneous electrochemical observations that voltage and current alone may not reveal.
Downie and co-workers demonstrated this approach on high-voltage LiCoO2/graphite and NMC442/graphite pouch cells. They varied current over narrow voltage ranges and fitted the measured total heat flow with an empirical model. That treatment produced polarization and entropic heat flow as functions of state of charge (SOC), while parasitic chemical heat was represented as a function of both SOC and time (Downie et al., Journal of Physical Chemistry C 118(51), 29533–29541, 2014).

Why pair IMC with electrochemical measurements
A heat-flow trace by itself is ambiguous. A positive excursion can arise from greater polarization during a high-current segment, a reversible entropic effect at a particular SOC, or a parasitic reaction. The same chemical process can also look different when current, temperature, electrode history or cell age changes. Record voltage, current, capacity and temperature on the same timeline so that every thermal feature has an electrochemical context.
The three interpretation questions
- Is the feature reversible with current direction or SOC? A contribution that changes with charge versus discharge, or changes predictably with SOC, is a candidate for electrochemical polarization or entropy rather than a purely time-dependent side reaction.
- Does it persist during a rest? Heat that continues while current is zero is difficult to explain as simple ohmic polarization and can indicate relaxation or parasitic chemistry. A rest does not prove a reaction, because thermal equilibration and other slow processes can also contribute.
- Does it grow with elapsed time at fixed SOC? Downie et al. explicitly treated parasitic heat as dependent on both SOC and time. Comparing otherwise identical holds at different dwell times helps distinguish a static SOC-dependent term from a progressing reaction.
Use these questions to design the experiment before looking for a chemical explanation. The instrument reports net heat flow; the electrochemical record supplies the constraints needed to decompose it.
What the measured heat-flow signal contains
For analysis, treat the measured total heat flow as a sum of physically different terms rather than as a direct “reaction-rate” channel. A useful conceptual decomposition is:

The exact equation, sign convention and fitted parameters depend on the instrument and model. Polarization heat is associated with irreversible losses during current flow. Entropic heat is reversible heat linked to the cell’s thermodynamic state and can change sign with SOC or current direction. Parasitic chemical heat comes from reactions that are not part of the intended reversible cycling, including electrolyte or electrode reactions. Baseline and environmental terms must be measured or fitted so they are not mistaken for cell chemistry.
Polarization heat
Polarization generally increases with current and with conditions that raise internal resistance. In the Downie protocol, changing current over narrow voltage ranges supplied the variation needed to estimate this component empirically. A polarization term should therefore be checked against current magnitude, current direction and the cell’s recent history rather than assigned from peak position alone.
Entropic heat
Entropic heat reflects the reversible heat associated with changes in the cell’s thermodynamic state. It can vary strongly with SOC and may reverse sign between charge and discharge. A feature that follows SOC reproducibly but does not increase simply with elapsed time is more consistent with a reversible contribution, although the distinction still depends on the fitted model and data quality.

Parasitic chemical heat
Parasitic heat can be small, slow and strongly history-dependent. Downie et al. modeled it as a function of SOC and time in pouch cells, including cells with different electrolyte-additive blends. A rising baseline during a voltage hold, or a heat signal that remains after current stops, is a reason to test a parasitic-reaction hypothesis; it is not proof until background, thermal lag and electrochemical behavior have been considered.
What you need before starting
IMC work is a system experiment, not just a calorimeter measurement. Define the question, the cell population and the electrochemical schedule before placing a cell in the instrument.
Define the measurement goal
- Time- and SOC-dependent parasitic heat: plan repeated SOC points, controlled holds and a model that can separate current-related terms from time-dependent heat.
- SEI-formation chemistry: combine early-cycle IMC with differential-capacity analysis and carefully documented electrolyte formulations.
- General thermal characterization: decide whether you need dynamic heat flow, a cell heat-capacity value, or both. A heat-capacity measurement is not interchangeable with an operando heat-flow experiment.
Document the cell
- Record manufacturer, format, nominal capacity, electrode chemistry, electrolyte formulation when known, additive concentrations, age and storage history.
- Record the cell’s initial SOC and the method used to establish it. Use the same SOC definition in the analysis and figures.
- For pouch cells, document sealing condition, tabs, orientation and any mechanical constraint. These details can affect thermal contact and pressure but were not specified in the cited abstracts.
Confirm instrument capability
Obtain the calorimeter manufacturer’s instructions for cell mounting, calibration, allowable dimensions, electrical feedthroughs, current limits, temperature range, sampling behavior and emergency shutdown. The published records used here do not provide an instrument model, calibration recipe, mounting geometry, sampling rate or complete cycling schedule, so those details must not be inferred from the papers.
A defensible IMC workflow
The following sequence describes the logic of a measurement campaign. It is a planning framework, not a substitute for the selected instrument’s validated operating procedure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- State a falsifiable question. For example: “Does a heat feature during the first formation cycle coincide with an SEI-related differential-capacity feature, and does it change when an additive is present?” Avoid a question that merely asks whether the trace “looks different.”
- Select matched cells. Use cells with the same chemistry, format and history when comparing additives or cycling conditions. Keep the comparison variable narrow enough that a thermal difference has an interpretable cause.
- Establish the electrochemical state. Bring each cell to the defined SOC with the chosen cycler and allow the same conditioning and rest sequence. Record current, voltage, capacity and elapsed time continuously.
- Stabilize the measurement environment. Install the cell exactly as required by the calorimeter documentation, close the measurement chamber and wait for the specified thermal baseline. Do not treat an arbitrary waiting period as a validated stabilization time.
- Run a background check. Measure the empty position, a reference load or the instrument’s prescribed baseline procedure. Keep the same wiring, fixtures and chamber configuration used for the cell run.
- Apply the electrochemical program. Use controlled charge, discharge, voltage holds or rests suited to the question. If following the Downie-style decomposition, introduce current changes over narrow voltage ranges so the model has information to estimate current-related heat.
- Synchronize records. Align calorimeter time stamps with cycler voltage, current and capacity. Note every transition, rest, interruption and abnormal event in a run log.
- Check data quality during the run. Look for baseline drift, clipping, electrical noise, thermal equilibration after a current step and signs of contact or wiring problems. Do not silently delete an interval; mark it and document the reason.
- Repeat critical conditions. Replicate the SOC points or additive comparison that supports the conclusion. A single peak in one cell is evidence of an observation, not a robust chemistry assignment.
- Fit and test the model. Estimate polarization and entropic terms from the electrochemical perturbations, then examine the residual for a time- and SOC-dependent parasitic component. Report the model assumptions and goodness-of-fit diagnostics used.
Designing the current and SOC program
Current changes are informative only when their timing and magnitude are known and when the cell remains in the intended voltage window. Narrow voltage ranges reduce the amount of SOC variation mixed into a current comparison, which is why the 2014 study used that strategy. The exact ranges, currents and dwell times from that study are not available in the record summarized here; reproduce them only from the full paper and supporting information, not from a guessed recipe.
Use rests deliberately
A rest separates current-dependent heat from processes that continue without applied current. Define the start and end of each rest in both the calorimeter and cycler logs. Interpret the early part of a rest cautiously because the instrument and cell may still be approaching thermal equilibrium after the current transition.
Cover the SOC region that matters
Parasitic heat is not necessarily uniform across the usable capacity. High-voltage regions can be particularly informative for high-voltage LiCoO2/graphite and NMC442/graphite cells, but the cited study should be consulted for its exact voltage limits and operating conditions. If the question concerns an additive’s SEI effect, include the early formation region where differential-capacity features are observed rather than sampling only mature cycling.

Interpreting SEI-formation heat
Hall, Glazier and Dahn used IMC alongside electrochemical measurements to study SEI formation in lithium-ion cells. They compared cells without an electrolyte additive with cells containing vinylene carbonate (VC), fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), pyridine boron trifluoride (PBF) and prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone (PES). Heat-flow peaks were interpreted together with differential-capacity features, linking thermal events to electrochemical reactions occurring during early cycling (Hall, Glazier and Dahn, Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics 18, 11383, 2016).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pair peaks with differential capacity
Plot heat flow and differential capacity against the same voltage or capacity axis, using matching sign conventions and synchronized cycle numbers. A coincident feature is stronger evidence than a heat peak viewed in isolation, but coincidence does not establish a unique reaction pathway. Compare additive-free and additive-containing cells under the same electrochemical conditions to identify changes in onset, position, area or persistence.
Do not over-simplify the VC mechanism
The 2016 article cautions against treating the observed VC-related features as a simple one-electron reduction followed by anionic polymerization. A heat peak can represent multiple overlapping steps, intermediates or transport effects. State the observation first—its voltage or capacity region and its relationship to the differential-capacity signal—then describe the mechanistic interpretation as a hypothesis with the assumptions exposed.
How to analyze the data
Prepare synchronized channels
Put time, voltage, current, capacity, SOC, heat flow and temperature on a common time base. Preserve the raw heat-flow channel and the unprocessed electrochemical data. Any smoothing, resampling, offset removal or differentiation should produce a separate analysis channel with the settings recorded.
Correct the baseline transparently
Use the background procedure specified by the instrument maker and report how the baseline was transferred to the cell run. A slowly drifting baseline can mimic parasitic heat. If a correction uses a fitted polynomial, reference segment or empty-cell trace, show that choice and test whether the scientific conclusion changes under a reasonable alternative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFit the composite signal
Apply an empirical model that uses the observed current and SOC dependence to estimate polarization and entropic contributions. Examine residuals versus time, SOC, current and voltage. A residual that is structured rather than random may indicate an omitted physical term, an inadequate baseline or an electrochemical transition that the model does not capture.
Quantify events consistently
For a peak or excursion, predefine the onset rule, integration window, baseline and sign convention. Report heat-flow amplitude and, when meaningful, integrated heat over the same window for every comparison cell. Do not compare peak heights from traces with different filtering, sampling or thermal equilibration without explaining the difference.

Separate observation from attribution
- Observation: a heat-flow feature appears at a specified time, SOC or voltage.
- Association: the feature overlaps a differential-capacity feature or changes with an additive.
- Attribution: a proposed reaction or heat source explains the association better than alternatives.
Only the first two levels are supported automatically by a trace. Attribution requires controls, a model and, where possible, independent chemical evidence.

Different methods answer different questions. The available sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark that ranks them by sensitivity, speed or accuracy, so choose by measurement objective rather than by a universal “best” label.

The optical-sensor work, “Operando decoding of chemical and thermal events in commercial Na(Li)-ion cells via optical sensors,” Nature Energy 5, 674–683 (2020), is useful context for sensing chemical and thermal events in commercial cells. The 2018 paper “Methodology to determine the heat capacity of lithium-ion cells” is relevant when the required parameter is heat capacity. Neither source makes those approaches interchangeable with IMC.
Controls that make a conclusion credible
Electrochemical controls
- Run an additive-free reference when evaluating an additive formulation.
- Use matched SOC, current, voltage limits, temperature and rest history across comparison cells.
- Include charge and discharge behavior when the model relies on reversible or current-direction effects.
Thermal and instrumental controls
- Repeat the baseline with the same wiring and fixtures.
- Check whether a feature follows the cell when the cell is remounted, or follows a fixture position instead.
- Verify that electrical leads, feedthroughs and current changes do not create an artifact in the calorimeter channel.
Cell-population controls
- Use more than one cell for a chemistry comparison and report cell-to-cell spread.
- Track capacity and impedance history so aging is not mistaken for an additive effect.
- Keep failed, noisy or abnormal runs in the record and explain exclusion criteria rather than selecting only visually clean traces.
Common failure modes and how to diagnose them
A large spike follows every current step
First check thermal lag, electrical feedthroughs, wiring motion and the instrument’s response to a known current transition. If the spike scales with current and decays rapidly, it may be an instrumental or polarization transient rather than a chemical event. Compare with the baseline configuration and with rests.
The baseline drifts throughout the experiment
Check chamber stabilization, ambient temperature, fixture contact, cable routing and the prescribed reference procedure. A drifting baseline can overwhelm the slow parasitic signal that IMC is intended to reveal. Repeat the run only after identifying whether the drift is environmental, instrumental or cell-related.
Heat peaks do not align with voltage features
Confirm time synchronization, sign conventions, SOC calculation and differentiation settings. Thermal equilibration can shift the apparent timing of a feature. Also consider that a chemical event may not produce a prominent differential-capacity signal, while an electrochemical feature may have little net heat.
Two nominally identical cells disagree
Compare formation history, SOC calibration, storage time, sealing, thermal contact and additive composition. Repeat the comparison with matched cells before assigning the difference to chemistry. Pouch-cell construction and contact pressure can change the measured thermal path even when the electrochemistry is nominally the same.
Best Value
The fitted parasitic term is unstable
Inspect whether current, SOC and time were varied enough to identify separate terms. Strongly correlated variables, inadequate rests or an over-flexible empirical model can make the decomposition non-unique. Report parameter uncertainty or sensitivity to the fitting window instead of presenting one fit as definitive.
Safety and experimental boundaries
Use only cells, current levels, voltage limits and temperatures approved by the calorimeter and cell manufacturers or by your laboratory’s safety assessment. Lithium-ion cells can vent or enter thermal runaway; an isothermal instrument is not a guarantee that an abusive condition is safe. Provide over-temperature and over-voltage protection, remote operation where appropriate, a containment strategy and a documented shutdown procedure. Do not alter a pouch cell, pierce a seal or add a sensor unless the procedure has been specifically assessed for that cell format.
What a complete report should include
A reproducible IMC publication or internal report should state the cell chemistry and format, cell history, SOC definition, electrochemical schedule, temperature set point, calorimeter model, mounting and thermal-contact arrangement, calibration and baseline method, sampling and filtering, synchronization method, sign convention, model equations, fitting windows, controls, replicates and exclusion rules. Include raw or minimally processed traces alongside corrected data so readers can see whether a conclusion depends on baseline treatment.

For the 2014 parasitic-heat approach, identify how current variation constrained polarization and entropic terms and how the time-dependent residual was obtained. For the 2016 SEI study, show the heat-flow and differential-capacity comparison and identify which additive formulation was used. If a detail is not available from the selected paper, obtain it from the full methods section, supporting information or instrument documentation rather than filling the gap with an assumed value.
What IMC can—and cannot—tell you
IMC can reveal heat events that are difficult to infer from voltage and current alone. It is particularly powerful when a controlled current/SOC program lets you estimate polarization and entropic heat, leaving a physically interpretable residual that varies with time. It can also show that an additive changes the thermal signature of early cycling when the change is supported by differential-capacity behavior and matched controls.
IMC cannot, by itself, identify a unique molecular product, prove that one peak equals one reaction, or replace chemical characterization. A heat-flow trace is an energy-balance measurement. The strongest conclusions combine it with electrochemical data, explicit modeling, controls and a clear statement of uncertainty.
