For Apple Maps to locate you and provide accurate directions, Apple says Maps needs Location Services, Precise Location, and an internet connection. Weather may present different choices depending on the iPhone, iOS version, and region, so use the options shown on its own settings screen rather than assuming it needs background or precise access.

Start with the global Location Services switch
Location Services has two layers: a device-wide control and individual app permissions. If the device-wide switch is off, Maps, Weather, and other apps cannot receive location information even if their individual settings appear enabled.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Turn on the main Location Services switch if you want location-dependent features.
Apple lists this path and explains that some apps may not work unless Location Services is enabled. You can revisit the page at any time; changing the global switch does not require reinstalling an app or resetting the iPhone. See Apple’s Location Services instructions.

Set up Apple Maps without sacrificing more access than necessary
Choose Maps in the app list
On the Location Services screen, scroll to Maps and tap it. The permission choices displayed there are the ones available for that app on your iPhone. Select the least permissive option that still supports the way you use Maps.
- While Using the App lets Maps access location while Maps, or a visible Maps feature, is on screen. It is a practical starting point for people who open Maps for directions but do not need location updates while doing something else.
- Always permits background access. Use it only when a Maps feature you rely on needs location while the app is not visible, and understand that the broader permission can lead to additional privacy reminders.
- Never blocks Maps from Location Services information. You can still open Maps and browse places, but features that need your current position will not have that data.
- Ask Next Time Or When I Share defers access until the system asks again, when this option is offered.
Apple does not promise that every app offers every choice; some apps show only two options. The labels and explanation beneath the app name are the authoritative guide for that iPhone.
Turn on Precise Location for current-position directions
Inside the Maps permission screen, turn on Precise Location when you need Maps to identify your exact position or start turn-by-turn directions from where you are. With it on, the app receives a specific location. With it off, the app receives an approximate area instead.

Configure Weather using the choices your iPhone actually shows
Inspect Weather’s individual entry
Return to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then tap Weather. Read the options and the explanatory text displayed on that screen. Weather’s available permission modes can vary by app implementation, iOS version, and region; the available material does not establish one universal requirement such as Always or Precise Location for every Weather installation.
If you normally open Weather to check conditions, a foreground option such as While Using the App may be sufficient when it is offered. If a feature on your iPhone provides weather updates while you are not looking at the app and the Weather screen offers background access, decide whether that convenience justifies Always. If you only need a broad local forecast, approximate location may provide enough context when the precise-location control is available.
Do not treat Maps and Weather as a single permission
Each app has its own row and its own permission state. Turning on Precise Location for Maps does not automatically turn it on for Weather, and changing Weather does not alter Maps. Review them independently after a major iOS update or when you install a new app that requests location.

Permission scope and precision are separate decisions. You can, for example, allow an app to run only while you use it and still choose whether the location it receives is precise or approximate. Apple’s overview of these controls is available at Turn Location Services and GPS on or off.

Choose the least access that still completes the task
For occasional map searches
Set Maps to While Using the App. Leave Precise Location off only if you are comfortable with an approximate starting area and do not need the phone to identify your exact position. Turn precision on before requesting directions from your current location.
For regular turn-by-turn navigation
Use the Maps permission that allows access while you navigate, keep Precise Location on, and verify that the iPhone has an internet connection. If you stop navigation and want to reduce access, you can return to the same settings page and change the permission later.
For a general local forecast
Weather can often work with a broad area, but the correct choice is the one presented in the Weather entry on your device. Select a foreground option when you only check forecasts manually. Consider background access only if a Weather feature you use explains that it needs it.
For maximum restriction
Choose Never for apps that do not need your position, or turn off the global switch when you want to block Location Services across the phone. Expect location-dependent behavior to stop while the switch or app permission is disabled; restoring the setting is the normal recovery path.
How iPhone determines location
Apple describes Location Services as combining information from available cellular networks, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The mix depends on the device, surroundings, and network availability. Apps request permission through the operating system, which identifies the requesting app and the reason supplied by its developer.
Background access can produce reminders and a map showing locations recently accessed. Those notices are a privacy feature, not proof that an app is malfunctioning. You can review or withdraw permission whenever you choose.

Troubleshoot a map that still shows the wrong place
1. Confirm the three basic requirements
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and verify that the global switch is on.
- Tap Maps and verify that Maps has an access mode other than Never.
- Turn on Precise Location if the task requires your exact position.
- Check that the iPhone is connected to the internet, as Apple specifies for finding your location and providing accurate directions.
2. Check the environment instead of assuming a permission fault
Location estimates can be affected by weak or unavailable GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular signals. Move to a location with a clearer view of the sky or a stronger network connection when practical, then try again. Permission changes do not guarantee an accurate result in every environment.

3. Compare the screen with physical clues
Apple warns that Maps and other location-based data services may be unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete in some areas. Compare the displayed route with visible streets, landmarks, and posted signs. If the on-screen route conflicts with a sign or other current local information, follow the posted instruction and use judgment rather than treating the map as infallible.
4. Account for regional data limits
A correct permission setting cannot add map data or network coverage that is unavailable in a particular geography. If the position is consistently wrong only in one area, the limitation may be regional or data-service related rather than a privacy setting.
Troubleshoot Weather that does not update as expected
Check Weather’s row, not only the global switch
Open the Weather entry under Location Services and confirm that its permission has not been changed to Never. If the app offers a foreground mode, open Weather once while connected so it can request and use the allowed location. If it offers background access and you rely on updates when the app is closed, verify that the selected mode matches that need.
Separate stale data from a location-permission problem
A forecast can be old or incomplete because data services are unavailable, not because the app lacks precise coordinates. Check the iPhone’s internet connection and whether other network-dependent content loads. If the Weather permission is already appropriate and the connection works, changing Precise Location may not resolve a service-side or regional data gap.
Use approximate location deliberately
If a nearby-city forecast meets your needs, leaving Precise Location off can reduce the specificity shared with Weather. If the forecast is assigned to the wrong area, enable Precise Location for Weather if that control is offered and reassess; do not assume the result will improve in every region.
When a permission change is not the right fix
Location Services settings govern whether an app may receive location information. They do not guarantee map coverage, a complete place database, an available cellular network, a GPS fix indoors, or a current forecast. Apple summarizes this limitation by noting that “Maps, directions and location-based apps depend on data services” and may be unavailable, inaccurate, or incomplete in some areas.
Use the settings to grant appropriate access, then diagnose connectivity, signal conditions, and regional data separately. This distinction prevents a common mistake: repeatedly toggling Precise Location when the actual issue is no internet connection or incomplete local data.

- Once a month or after installing several apps, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Review apps set to Always. Change any that do not need background access to a foreground option when available.
- Review which apps have Precise Location enabled. Keep it on for tasks that require an exact position; turn it off for broad-area information.
- Check Maps before a trip: confirm its access mode, precision setting, and internet connection.
- Check Weather’s displayed options rather than applying a blanket rule to every iPhone.
- If an app stops providing a location feature after tightening access, return to its row and grant the minimum permission that restores the specific task.
Understand what happens after you change a setting
Permission changes apply to the selected app rather than rewriting every location setting on the phone. Turning Maps from Always to While Using the App limits its access when it is not visible, but it does not disable Weather or any other app. Likewise, turning Precise Location off for Weather does not make Maps approximate. Check the app name at the top of each settings page before saving a change.

If an app asks again after you choose Ask Next Time Or When I Share, that is the expected behavior of the option. You can grant access for the immediate task, decline it, or return to Settings later. The choice is reversible, so you can use a restrictive default and temporarily allow access when a trip or forecast requires it.
When you enable broader access, iPhone may show a notice explaining background use, along with a map of locations the app recently accessed. Read that notice as a record of the permission’s scope. It does not mean the phone has developed a fault, and it does not prevent you from changing the setting again.
