For repeatable iPhone photos, choose the focus point, set brightness deliberately, and lock both when the scene might change. Open Camera, tap the subject, drag the exposure control, and touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. Use Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings to carry selected choices into later sessions. On supported models, Camera Control provides another way to adjust exposure, depth, zoom, camera selection, Photographic Styles, and tone, although its options depend on the camera mode.
What the iPhone changes automatically
When Camera opens, the iPhone normally chooses focus and exposure for the scene. Focus determines which subject appears sharp; exposure determines how bright the image looks. Automatic decisions are useful for quick snapshots, but they can change when you reframe, a person moves, a bright window enters the composition, or the lighting shifts.

Consistency means making the important decisions yourself at the moment they matter. Select the area that should be sharp, adjust brightness to suit the scene, and lock those choices when you need several frames to match. The controls described here are built into the iPhone; no accessory is required.
Names, locations, and availability can differ by iPhone model, software version, and camera mode. If a control is missing, switch modes only when appropriate and check whether your model supports that feature.

The quickest repeatable workflow
- Open Camera and frame the scene in the mode you plan to use.
- Tap the person, object, or area that should be in focus. The iPhone uses that area to guide both focus and exposure.
- Drag the exposure control beside the focus area upward to make the image brighter or downward to make it darker. Judge the result on the live preview rather than applying a universal numeric setting.
- For a single photograph, capture after the preview looks right.
- For a sequence, or whenever reframing could make the phone hunt for a different subject or brightness, touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears.
- Take the photographs without moving the locked point relative to your subject. Tap elsewhere on the screen to release the lock when the subject or lighting changes.
This tap, drag, hold, and release sequence is the baseline method. It works even when a model does not include a physical Camera Control.
Set focus exactly where you need it
Choose the focus target
Tap the part of the scene that must be sharp, such as a person’s face, a product label, or a nearby object. A focus indicator appears at the selected area. The tap tells the automatic system which subject has priority; it does not permanently freeze the setting.
For a repeated composition, tap the same visual feature each time rather than allowing the camera to choose a new target. A small change in framing can otherwise cause focus to jump to a high-contrast background, a nearer object, or another face.
Understand what a focus tap does not do
A tap selects the current priority, but the iPhone can still reconsider focus and exposure as the scene or composition changes. If you need the chosen point to remain fixed while you reframe or make several exposures, use AE/AF Lock.
When to release focus
Tap a different area when the subject changes or when you intentionally want another plane of the scene sharp. If you leave a lock active after moving to a new subject, the camera will continue using the old focus and exposure choices until you unlock it.

Adjust brightness with the exposure control
Make a scene brighter or darker
After tapping to set the focus target, drag the adjacent exposure control upward for a brighter preview or downward for a darker one. This is a visual correction for the current scene, not a fixed recipe that applies to every photograph. A backlit subject may need a brighter setting; a bright sign or snow-covered landscape may look more natural with a darker setting.
Use the preview as your reference
Move the slider in small amounts and watch important highlights and shadows. If bright areas lose visible detail, reduce brightness. If the subject’s face or primary object is too dark, increase it. The correct position depends on the light, subject, and creative intent.

Lock brightness when it must not drift
Exposure can change when you reframe because the iPhone evaluates a different mix of light and dark areas. Touch and hold the selected focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. The lock preserves the chosen focus and exposure together, preventing automatic changes during that shot or sequence. Tap elsewhere on the screen to unlock.
AE/AF Lock for matching frames
Use it for a fixed composition
AE/AF Lock is useful for a series of product photos, a person standing in one position, or any sequence where every frame should have the same sharpness and brightness. First tap the intended target, make the exposure adjustment, then touch and hold that area until the lock label appears.
Use it before you reframe
If you want the subject on one side of the final image, point the camera at the subject, establish focus and brightness, activate AE/AF Lock, and then recompose. Because the selected settings are locked, moving the subject away from the center does not automatically transfer priority to the background.

Know when a lock is the wrong choice
Unlock whenever the subject distance or lighting changes significantly. A lock made for a near object will not automatically refocus on a distant one, and an exposure chosen in shade may be unsuitable in direct light. Tap the screen to release it, select the new target, and adjust brightness again.

Focus and AE/AF Lock are shot-level controls. To keep other preferences after closing and reopening Camera, open Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings. Turn on only the options you want carried into the next session.
Settings Apple lists as preservable
- Camera mode: Camera can reopen in the mode you last used instead of returning to its default.
- Photographic Style: Your selected style can remain active for later photos.
- Creative controls: Supported creative adjustments can persist.
- Depth: Depth-related choices can be retained where the model and mode provide them.
- Live Photo: The last Live Photo choice can persist.
- Exposure adjustment: A selected exposure adjustment can be retained.
The exact list is model- and feature-dependent. An option shown in Apple’s guide may not appear on every iPhone or in every mode.
Choose persistence deliberately
Preserving a setting is helpful when you repeatedly make the same kind of photograph. It can be confusing if you expect a clean default and forget that a previous choice is still active. For example, preserving a camera mode may reopen the app in that mode, while preserving exposure adjustment may carry a brightness correction into a different lighting situation. Turn on only the choices that support your normal workflow, and review them when your subject or shooting conditions change.
Camera Control on supported iPhone models
Some iPhone models include a physical Camera Control. Clicking it opens Camera. A light double-press displays the settings overlay; slide to the setting you want, lightly press to select it, and slide again to adjust the selected value. This provides a hardware path for changing controls without relying entirely on taps on the preview.

Not every control is present in every camera mode. Camera Control availability and the settings shown depend on the iPhone model, software version, and mode. Treat the list above as the documented range, not a promise that every item appears on your device.
Camera Control interaction sequence
- Click Camera Control to open Camera.
- Lightly double-press Camera Control to show the settings overlay.
- Slide to the setting you need, such as exposure or zoom.
- Lightly press to select that setting.
- Slide to adjust it, checking the live preview.
- Capture the image using the normal shutter control.
Camera Control changes how you reach a setting; it does not remove the need to choose a sensible focus target or to lock focus and exposure when consistency requires it.
On-screen controls versus Camera Control
| Factor | On-screen Camera tools | Camera Control |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Baseline method described for iPhone Camera; exact tools still vary by model and mode. | Limited to iPhone models that include Camera Control. |
| Interaction | Tap a focus area, drag the adjacent exposure control, and touch and hold for AE/AF Lock. | Click to open Camera; light double-press, slide, lightly press, and slide to adjust. |
| Typical adjustments | Focus target and exposure directly on the preview; other tools depend on mode. | May expose exposure, depth, zoom, camera selection, Photographic Styles, and tone. |
| Persistence | Use Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings for supported choices. | Use the same Preserve Settings area for choices that the model and mode support. |
| Mode dependence | Some controls appear or disappear as you change modes. | The available settings overlay changes with the camera mode. |
Use the on-screen method when you need the broadest, model-independent explanation. Use Camera Control when your iPhone supports it and its physical interaction is more convenient for the way you shoot.

Portrait or person against a bright background
- Frame the person and tap the face or other feature that should be sharp.
- Check the preview for the person’s brightness rather than letting the bright background determine the result.
- Drag exposure upward or downward until the subject looks right.
- Touch and hold the focus area for AE/AF Lock if you will recompose or take several frames.
- Unlock when the person moves to a different distance or the light changes.
Product or document sequence
- Place the item at the distance you will use for the series.
- Tap a high-priority detail, such as the product face or document text.
- Adjust exposure so text and important surfaces are readable without overly bright areas.
- Touch and hold until AE/AF Lock appears.
- Keep the lighting and distance as stable as possible while capturing the sequence.
- Tap elsewhere to unlock before photographing a different item or moving the setup.
Scene with changing light
- Tap the subject after the light changes.
- Set exposure for the new conditions.
- Use AE/AF Lock only for the portion of the sequence that remains under the same light.
- Release the lock and repeat the selection when moving between bright and dark areas.
How to make settings stick without surprises
- For the same mode every time: preserve Camera mode, then verify the mode shown when Camera next opens.
- For a consistent look: preserve Photographic Style if your model offers that option and you want the same style in later sessions.
- For recurring brightness corrections: preserve exposure adjustment only when your usual lighting justifies carrying it forward.
- For motion rendering: preserve Live Photo when that choice matters to your workflow.
- For depth or creative choices: preserve them only if they are available on your model and useful for the subjects you regularly photograph.
Preserve Settings controls what Camera remembers between sessions; it does not replace AE/AF Lock for holding a focus and exposure choice during a sequence.

The subject is sharp in one frame and soft in another
Tap the intended subject again and use AE/AF Lock before capturing the sequence. If the subject distance changes, unlock and select a new focus point. Confirm that you are using the same camera mode and lens choice when comparing frames.

Brightness changes after you reframe
The automatic system is responding to the new mix of light and dark areas. Set exposure after tapping the subject, then touch and hold for AE/AF Lock before recomposing. Unlock when the lighting genuinely changes.
The camera reopens with an unexpected mode or look
Open Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings and review which options are enabled. Disable a preserved mode, style, creative control, depth choice, Live Photo choice, or exposure adjustment if you want Camera to return to its ordinary startup behavior for that option.
A Camera Control option is missing
Check the current camera mode and your iPhone model. Apple documents that Camera Control does not expose every setting in every mode. Use the on-screen Camera tools for focus and exposure, or switch to a mode that supports the control you need.

The lock label no longer appears
Touch and hold the selected focus area rather than tapping briefly. A brief tap selects the area; the hold is what invokes AE/AF Lock. Tap elsewhere when you need to release it.
A practical consistency checklist
- Use the same camera mode for photographs you intend to match.
- Tap the same subject feature to establish focus priority.
- Adjust brightness with the exposure control while watching the preview.
- Activate AE/AF Lock before reframing or taking a series under unchanged conditions.
- Release the lock when subject distance, lighting, or photographic intent changes.
- Review Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings so only useful choices persist.
- If available, use Camera Control for supported adjustments, but check which settings the current mode exposes.
- Before a new session, glance at the mode and preview so a preserved choice does not surprise you.
What “consistent” can and cannot mean on iPhone
These controls make the selected focus and exposure decisions repeatable within the conditions you control. They do not make different scenes identical. A new subject distance requires a new focus decision, and different lighting requires a new exposure decision. Camera mode, model, software version, and available features also affect which controls you can use.
The most dependable routine is therefore deliberate rather than complicated: tap the important subject, set brightness by eye, lock focus and exposure for the sequence, and preserve only the settings you truly want at the next launch. When conditions change, unlock and start that short process again.
