Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWith a hardware keyboard and trackpad, an iPad Air can be navigated largely without touching the screen. Start with the Command-based editing shortcuts, use Command-Tab and Command-Space to move between tasks, and hold Command whenever you need a list of shortcuts for the app you are using. Trackpad edge swipes expose the Dock, Home Screen, and Slide Over, while multi-finger gestures depend on the particular trackpad model and iPadOS version.
Start with the iPad Air shortcuts you will use most
Most iPad keyboard shortcuts use the Command (⌘) key, as they do on a Mac. If you normally use a Windows or other PC keyboard, treat Command as the key that fills the Control role for these iPad shortcuts. The key may be labeled Command on an Apple keyboard or use a Windows-logo or other modifier label on a PC keyboard, depending on the hardware.

| Shortcut | Result | Where it is most useful |
|---|---|---|
| Command-C | Copies the selected item | Text, files, images, and other app-supported content |
| Command-V | Pastes the clipboard | In a text field or another destination that accepts the copied content |
| Command-X | Cuts the selected item | Editable text and content in apps that support cutting |
| Command-A | Selects all selectable content | Text editors, documents, lists, and other selection-aware views |
| Command-Z | Undoes the last supported edit | Editing and writing workflows |
| Command-Tab | Switches between recently used apps | Moving from a document to a browser, mail, chat, or another open app |
| Command-Space | Opens Search | Finding apps, files, settings, contacts, and other indexed content |
These are common commands, not an exhaustive or universal list. An app can add, remove, or change shortcuts, and some commands work only when a particular object or text field is active. If a combination appears to do nothing, first click the intended document, field, or list and try again.
How do I see keyboard shortcuts on iPad?
Shortcut discovery is built into iPadOS, so you do not have to memorize every app’s commands.
#1 Best Overall
- WHY MAGIC KEYBOARD FOR IPAD — The incredibly thin and portable Magic Keyboard for iPad Air delivers an amazing typing experience, with a full 14-key function row, built-in trackpad, USB-C pass-through charging, and a floating cantilever design. No pairing or charging required.
- DESIGNED FOR COMFORT — Magic Keyboard for iPad Air attaches magnetically and features a two-cantilever hinge design for smooth, adjustable viewing angles; physical keycaps with a scissor mechanism; and a 14-key function row for comfort and versatility.
- COMPATIBILITY — Magic Keyboard works with iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3, and M4) and iPad Air (4th and 5th generation).
- PROTECTIVE KEYBOARD AND CASE — Folds to provide front and back protection wherever you go and features a USB-C connector for pass-through charging. Available in white.
- Connect and wake the hardware keyboard, then open the app you want to use.
- Hold the Command key. On supported Apple external keyboards, iPadOS displays the shortcuts available in the current app and context.
- Release Command to dismiss the overlay, then press the combination shown for the action you need.
You can also inspect the app’s menu. On iPad apps that expose menus from the top edge or a menu bar, open the relevant menu and look for the keyboard equivalents printed beside commands. Menu contents and displayed shortcuts change with the selected text, file, or view, so checking while the correct item is active gives the most useful result.
Why a shortcut may be missing
- The app does not provide a keyboard command for that action.
- The command is available only in a different view, such as an editor rather than a read-only preview.
- No text or object is selected, so editing commands are unavailable.
- The connected keyboard uses a different modifier layout or has a key that iPadOS does not recognize as expected.
Use Command-Tab and Command-Space for system navigation
Switch apps with Command-Tab
Press Command-Tab to move through recently used apps without opening the App Switcher on screen. Keep holding Command and tap Tab repeatedly to advance through the list; release the keys when the desired app is highlighted. The exact order reflects recent use rather than a permanent dock order. This makes it practical to shuttle between two active tasks, such as a browser and a note, while leaving the display in the current app layout.
Search from anywhere with Command-Space
Command-Space opens iPadOS Search. Type an app name, document, contact, setting, or other indexed term, then select a result with the keyboard or pointer. Search availability and the results shown depend on what is indexed and which apps are installed; Command-Space is the shortcut to the search interface, not a guarantee that every app’s private data will appear.

Trackpad edge gestures are quickest when you think of the destination rather than a named gesture. Keep the pointer near the center before beginning, and swipe far enough to cross the edge rather than making a short movement that ends inside the current app.

Reveal the Dock, then return Home
- Place one finger on the trackpad and swipe past the bottom edge of the iPad display. The Dock appears over the current app.
- To leave the app and go to the Home Screen, swipe past the bottom edge again. The second edge swipe takes you Home.
The two actions are intentionally separate: the first exposes the Dock for launching or changing apps, while the second performs the Home gesture. If the Dock does not appear, begin lower on the trackpad and use a longer, continuous swipe toward the display edge.
Open Slide Over from the right edge
Swipe past the right edge to open Slide Over when the current iPadOS layout and app support it. Slide Over places a narrow, floating app over the current app. The result can depend on the app and multitasking state, so an app that does not support the relevant multitasking mode may not open as a Slide Over window.
Reach Control Center and Notification Center
Use the status-area icons at the top of the display for system panels. Select the appropriate status icon with the pointer to open Control Center or Notification Center. This is different from the bottom- and right-edge swipes: those edge gestures handle Dock, Home, and Slide Over navigation, while the status icons are the direct entry points for system controls and notifications.

Two-finger and three-finger gestures: check your trackpad first
Apple documents additional gestures for Magic Trackpad 2 and for the trackpads built into Magic Keyboard for iPad and Magic Keyboard Folio. Do not assume that every Bluetooth, USB, or keyboard-integrated trackpad implements the same gesture set. A pointer may work on a third-party device even when some multi-finger or edge gestures are unavailable.

| Gesture family | Apple-documented purpose on the named trackpads | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Two-finger movement | Scroll through a page, list, or document | Requires a trackpad that supports the documented two-finger gesture |
| Two-finger pinch | Zoom in or out where the app supports zooming | Zoom behavior is app-dependent |
| Three-finger Home gesture | Go to the Home Screen | Listed for Magic Trackpad 2 and the named Magic Keyboard trackpads |
| Three-finger app switching | Move between apps or app spaces as supported by iPadOS | Not a promise that every trackpad or app exposes identical behavior |
| Three-finger movement | Access App Switcher, Today View, or Home Screen search in the documented contexts | Use the on-screen destination and iPadOS response to confirm the gesture on your model |
| Secondary click | Open a context menu, equivalent to a right-click | Availability and configuration depend on the connected trackpad |
Apple groups these as extra gestures rather than a guarantee for all pointing devices. If a two-finger scroll works but a three-finger gesture does not, that difference can indicate hardware or driver support rather than a fault in iPadOS.
How do I right-click with an iPad trackpad?
Use the trackpad’s supported secondary click gesture to open a contextual menu. On a trackpad that provides it, click with two fingers or use the configured secondary-click area, then choose an action from the menu. The exact physical gesture varies by device, and Apple documents secondary click among the additional features of Magic Trackpad 2 and the trackpads built into the named Magic Keyboard models.
If a secondary click produces a normal selection instead, test the same action in a place that has a known context menu, such as a file or text selection. Then verify that the trackpad is recognized and that its model supports secondary click. A missing context menu can also be normal when the selected object or app has no alternate actions.

Keyboard and trackpad settings that change behavior
Reassign modifier keys
If Command, Control, Option, or another modifier is in an inconvenient position, iPadOS lets you change its assignment for the hardware keyboard.

- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Keyboard.
- Choose Hardware Keyboard.
- Tap Modifier Keys.
- Select the physical key you want to change and assign the modifier that should be produced.
Modifier reassignment changes what iPadOS receives from that key; it does not add shortcuts that an app does not support. After changing it, test Command-C, Command-V, and Command-Tab in a simple text field or app before relying on the new layout.
Turn on Full Keyboard Access
For keyboard-focused navigation through controls, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards > Full Keyboard Access. This feature is separate from ordinary Command shortcuts: it lets you move focus among interface elements using the keyboard. Its focus indicators and key behavior can change how Tab and arrow keys feel in an app, so turn it on when you need keyboard navigation across buttons and controls, not merely text editing.

The right setup depends on whether you want one attached unit or separate components. An integrated keyboard-and-trackpad keeps the pointer surface with the iPad and generally offers a compact travel arrangement. A standalone trackpad can sit at a more comfortable angle beside an existing keyboard, but it adds another device to carry and pair.

What Apple lists for the 13-inch Magic Keyboard for iPad Air
Apple’s 2025 technical specifications for the 13-inch Magic Keyboard for iPad Air list an integrated trackpad, a 14-key function row, and USB-C pass-through charging. The same specification lists compatibility with the 13-inch iPad Air models using M2, M3, and M4 chips and requires iPadOS 18.3 or later.

Those details apply to the cited 13-inch keyboard specification, not automatically to every iPad Air size or generation. Before purchase, match the keyboard’s listed model identifiers to your iPad Air’s display size and generation, and check the installed iPadOS version. Compatibility listings can change as new iPad Air models appear.
A practical workflow for working without touching the screen
- Connect the keyboard or trackpad and unlock the iPad Air.
- Open your primary app and hold Command to learn its available shortcuts.
- Use Command-A, Command-C, Command-V, Command-X, and Command-Z for supported editing tasks.
- Press Command-Space when you need another app, file, or setting, rather than leaving the current document.
- Press Command-Tab to alternate between the two most recent apps.
- Use a bottom-edge swipe for the Dock, a second bottom-edge swipe for Home, and a right-edge swipe for Slide Over when supported.
- Use two-finger scrolling or zooming, and the documented three-finger or secondary-click gestures only if your trackpad model supports them.
- When a control cannot be reached conveniently with the pointer, enable Full Keyboard Access and continue with the keyboard.
This division keeps high-frequency editing on the keyboard, app changes on system shortcuts, and spatial navigation on the trackpad. It also gives you a clear fallback: if a gesture is unsupported, the same destination may still be reachable through a Command shortcut, the Dock, Search, or the touchscreen.
Troubleshooting shortcuts and gestures
A shortcut does nothing
- Hold Command in the active app to confirm that the command is offered there.
- Click inside the intended text field, document, or list before trying the shortcut again.
- Open the app menu from the top edge or menu bar and check whether the command is listed.
- Inspect Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard > Modifier Keys if the physical Command key was reassigned.
The pointer moves, but a gesture fails
- Identify whether the device is Magic Trackpad 2, a Magic Keyboard trackpad, a Magic Keyboard Folio trackpad, or another model.
- Compare the failed action with the gesture set Apple documents for that model; unsupported multi-finger gestures cannot be enabled by a software switch.
- Check that the iPad Air is running a compatible iPadOS version and that the accessory is connected and charged.
- Try the same action in an app or view where the gesture has a clear result, such as scrolling a long page or opening a known context menu.
The keyboard uses the wrong modifier
Return to the Modifier Keys screen and verify the assignment for the physical key you are pressing. If the layout is correct but the shortcut remains unavailable, the limitation is more likely to be app support or the keyboard’s compatibility than the modifier setting itself.
What to remember
Command is the center of iPad Air keyboard navigation: use it for editing, Command-Tab for app switching, Command-Space for Search, and hold it to reveal app-specific shortcuts. Trackpad edge swipes provide Dock, Home, and Slide Over, while the richer two- and three-finger set belongs only to trackpads Apple identifies as supporting it. Confirm your iPad Air size, generation, accessory model, and iPadOS version before expecting a particular gesture or buying an integrated keyboard.
