How to Use Instagram’s Following Feed Instead of Algorithmic Recommendations

To see Instagram posts from accounts you follow in chronological order, open the Home feed, tap the Instagram logo or the word “Instagram” at the top left, and choose Following. That view is separate from the ordinary Home feed, which combines followed-account posts with suggested posts and other recommendations. Choose Favorites instead when you want a chronological feed limited to accounts you select.

Open the Following feed

Instagram’s chronological views are available from the feed switcher at the top of Home. The path documented by Meta is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Instagram and go to the Home feed.
  2. At the top left, tap the Instagram logo or the word Instagram.
  3. Tap Following.

The resulting view is intended for posts from accounts you follow, arranged with the newest posts first. Meta described this feature in its March 23, 2022 announcement, where Adam Mosseri wrote that “Following shows you posts from the people you follow” and that both Following and Favorites are chronological.

This is a viewing mode, not a permanent replacement for Home. To return to Instagram’s usual recommendations, use the same control and select Home. Depending on your account and app version, Instagram may open on Home again the next time you launch the app. The official material does not promise that Following will remain the default after you close and reopen Instagram.

Following, Favorites and Home compared

These three choices answer different questions: whether you want every followed account, a smaller hand-picked group, or Instagram’s recommendation system.

View Accounts included Ordering Suggested posts Catch-up detail
Following Accounts you follow Chronological, newest posts first Meta’s August 2022 guidance says there are none in this view The same guidance says you can see the last 30 days of posts
Favorites Accounts you add to your Favorites list Chronological Restricted to the selected list in this view Not stated separately by Meta
Home Followed accounts plus suggested posts and other recommendations Instagram’s ordinary ranking system Yes; recommendations are added according to interests over time Not a stated chronological catch-up view

The Favorites limit documented in Instagram’s 2022 feature announcement was up to 50 accounts. That number belongs to the feature description from that period, so do not assume it is unchanged for every account today.

What chronological order means in practice

Following and Favorites are designed for catching up on recent posts rather than letting Instagram decide which item should appear next. A newly published post from an account in the relevant list should appear ahead of older posts from that same list. This differs from Home, where the order reflects Instagram’s ranking and can interleave followed accounts with recommendations.

Meta’s August 2022 guidance adds an important scope detail: Following can show the last 30 days of posts so that you can catch up on material you may have missed. The statement describes the feature at that time; it is not a guarantee that every account, region or current app build will display exactly a 30-day window.

Chronological does not mean that Instagram will recreate every post ever published by every account. Posts may be absent because an account did not publish during the available window, a post was deleted, you no longer follow the account, or the account’s content is unavailable to you for another reason. The feed controls the ranking of eligible posts; they do not override account visibility or content availability.

Use Favorites for a smaller, high-priority list

Favorites is useful when Following contains more accounts than you can check quickly. You choose the accounts that matter most, then open the feed switcher and select Favorites for a chronological view of that list.

When Favorites is the better choice

  • You want updates from a limited group rather than every account you follow.
  • You need a quick way to check close friends, family, local organizations or essential news sources.
  • You want those accounts to receive higher placement in the ordinary Home feed as well. Meta’s March 2022 announcement says Favorites accounts appear higher in Home.

How to work with the list

Instagram’s documented flow is to open the feed selector from Home and choose Favorites. The exact screen used to add or remove accounts can differ by app version, so look for Instagram’s Favorites management control if you need to change the list. The 2022 announcement records a maximum of 50 accounts; if your current interface shows a different limit or organization, follow the limit displayed in your account rather than relying on the older figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Favorites does not change whom you follow. Removing an account from Favorites leaves the follow relationship intact; it only changes which accounts appear in the Favorites view and receive the associated Home prioritization described by Meta.

A practical routine for avoiding recommendation overload

Start with Following when you want a complete catch-up

Open Home, select Following, and read from the newest post downward. This is the most direct way to review the accounts you follow without the suggested-post stream described for Home. If you have not checked Instagram recently, the August 2022 guidance says the view can cover the last 30 days, subject to the limits of the current implementation.

Switch to Favorites for a short daily check

After reviewing everything you need, return to the selector and choose Favorites when you only have a few minutes. Because Favorites is chronological, you can start at the top and stop at a clear point without wondering whether an algorithm has skipped ahead to a recommendation.

Use Home when discovery is the goal

Home remains the appropriate choice when you want a mixture of followed-account posts and Instagram’s recommendations. Meta describes Home as a combination of posts from accounts you follow, suggested posts and more, with recommendations shaped by your interests over time. It is not a mistake to use Home; it simply serves a different purpose from a follow-only chronological view.

Why the ordinary Home feed keeps showing recommendations

Instagram’s Home feed is not intended to be a pure list of followed accounts. Meta’s March 2022 explanation describes it as a mixed feed, and says recommendations are added over time based on your interests. That design is why an account can see posts from people it follows alongside accounts or topics it has not followed.

Selecting Following changes the feed you are viewing; it does not remove recommendations from Instagram as a whole. When you switch back to Home, the mixed system is still available. Likewise, using Favorites does not unfollow anyone or permanently disable discovery.

If Following or Favorites is missing

Instagram’s official descriptions do not provide a universal October 2026 compatibility matrix covering every iOS and Android release, the web interface, region, account type and age category. Availability and labels can therefore differ. Work through these checks before assuming the feature has been removed:

  1. Confirm you are on Home. The selector is described at the top left of the Home feed, not inside an individual profile, post or message thread.
  2. Tap the branding control. Look for the Instagram logo or the word “Instagram” at the top left. The label can vary with the interface version.
  3. Check both choices. Some accounts may see Following and Favorites presented in a menu rather than as permanent tabs.
  4. Update the app through your device’s normal app store. Instagram changes labels and layouts over time, and an older build may not match current documentation.
  5. Check account and age context. Meta’s November 2024 recommendations-reset article discusses a Following feed and Favorites specifically in the context of teen recommendation controls. That confirms the chronological design in a later product description, but it should not be read as a universal eligibility statement for every account.
  6. Try the mobile app if you are on the web. The cited Meta descriptions focus on the Instagram feed experience and do not establish identical controls on every web layout.

If the controls remain unavailable, Instagram may not have enabled the same interface for your account, location or platform. Avoid treating a missing menu as evidence that your follows have disappeared; the issue may be feature availability or a changed label.

What to do when the feed does not look chronological

You are still seeing suggested posts

Check the header. If it says Home, you are in the mixed recommendation feed. Open the Instagram logo or “Instagram” control and select Following again. Meta’s August 2022 description specifically says there are no suggested posts in Following, while Home is described as including them.

You are seeing posts from accounts you do not expect

Make sure you selected Following rather than Home or Favorites. Following covers accounts you follow; Favorites covers only the selected list. If an account has changed its content or you no longer follow it, its posts will not be included simply because you viewed them previously.

Older posts seem absent

The 30-day catch-up statement comes from Meta’s August 2022 guidance and describes the window available in that product description. It does not establish an unlimited archive. Deleted posts, changed follow relationships and account visibility can also affect what appears.

The app returns to Home

That behavior is consistent with the absence of an official promise that Following becomes the permanent default. Select Following whenever you want the chronological view; do not assume the last-used choice will persist after reopening the app.

Following versus Favorites: choosing the right scope

Choose Following when completeness matters. It is the broad view of the accounts you follow and is the option to use when you want to catch up without recommendations mixed in.

Choose Favorites when selectivity matters. It narrows the chronological stream to the accounts you have chosen, and Meta says those accounts also rank higher in Home. The documented 2022 limit was 50 accounts, which makes Favorites a prioritization list rather than a replacement for a large following list.

Neither view changes the underlying list of accounts you follow. They are feed perspectives: Following filters to followed accounts, while Favorites filters to a chosen subset.

Teen recommendation controls and the November 2024 description

Meta’s November 2024 article about resetting recommendations says teens can switch to a Following Feed with the most recent post first and can use Favorites for a selected set of accounts. This is useful confirmation that Meta continued to describe chronological Following and Favorites after the original 2022 launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The qualification matters: that article is framed around teen recommendation controls. It does not publish a single eligibility table for all ages, countries, account types, operating systems and interfaces. Use it as confirmation of the product concept, not as a guarantee that every Instagram account will expose identical controls.

Limits you should keep in mind

  • Interface changes: Instagram can move the selector or rename labels. The documented location is the top-left Instagram logo or “Instagram” word on Home.
  • Availability differences: Official descriptions do not establish one matrix for iOS, Android, web, region, account type or age eligibility as of October 2026.
  • Default behavior: There is no documented promise that the app will reopen directly to Following.
  • Favorites capacity: Up to 50 accounts was the limit recorded in Meta’s 2022 announcement; verify the limit shown by your current account.
  • Time window: The last-30-days catch-up statement comes from Meta’s August 2022 guidance and may not describe every current implementation.
  • Visibility still applies: Chronological sorting cannot display posts that have been deleted, restricted or otherwise made unavailable.

A simple decision guide

Your goal Select Reason
Review all followed accounts without recommendations Following It is the follow-only chronological view described by Meta.
Check a small priority group quickly Favorites It limits the chronological stream to accounts you select.
Discover accounts and topics beyond your follows Home It combines followed-account posts with suggested posts and other recommendations.
Catch up after being away Following Meta’s August 2022 guidance describes a last-30-days catch-up window.

Bottom line

Instagram’s feed selector lets you choose the experience that matches your intention: Following for posts from accounts you follow in chronological order, Favorites for a chronological list limited to selected accounts, and Home for Instagram’s ranked mixture of follows and recommendations. Open Home, tap the Instagram logo or “Instagram” at the top left, and select the view you need. Because availability and labels can change by account, platform, region and age context, treat the documented 2022 and 2024 descriptions as the feature’s guide rather than a promise of identical controls everywhere.
