For a stable 24/7 YouTube radio stream, plan around upload speed, consistency, and your broadband plan’s fair-usage and permitted-use terms—not its advertised download speed alone. Set the encoder to a bitrate your connection can sustain with spare capacity, connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet where practical, and test the full audio and stream setup before relying on it. If you do not want a computer or home connection running continuously, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube.
1. Choose a stream quality your upload can sustain
For H.264 live encoding, YouTube’s current recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps (values on YouTube’s encoder settings page checked 2026-10-03). These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that an Indian broadband connection will sustain them. The page lists other settings by resolution, frame rate, and codec: YouTube recommended live encoder settings.

For a radio stream with a static image, choose settings for the actual video and audio you will send. A lower-resolution static visual may be sufficient, but do not assume the stream is audio-only: YouTube receives an encoded live video stream. The encoder’s total outgoing bitrate, including audio, is what your upload connection must carry.

In other words, do not set the stream bitrate equal to all the upload capacity a speed test happens to show. Preserve room for fluctuations and other network use. YouTube’s guidance is that “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See its streaming tips and filming tips for live streaming.

2. Check the broadband plan before committing to a 24/7 stream
Look at typical upload speed, not just the download headline
Broadband packages often promote download speed, but a live broadcaster sends data outward. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth. Check the plan’s stated typical upload speed and measure actual upload performance at your premises.
TRAI does not prescribe a minimum upload or download speed for broadband. It says providers should indicate typical speeds generally available in tariff offerings; during testing, at least 90% of measured samples must meet or exceed the declared typical speed. TRAI also says providers must specify the fair-usage limit and speed after that limit is exhausted. These are rules about stated and tested service performance, not a guarantee that a particular home connection will remain uninterrupted for a live stream. Check the current offer and terms for your city, plan, and billing type. See TRAI’s Broadband FAQ.

Read FUP and permitted-use terms for the exact plan
“Unlimited” does not by itself tell you the post-threshold speed or whether the provider permits your intended continuous public broadcast. For example, Airtel Xstream Fiber terms accessed 2026-10-03 state a 3333 GB fair-usage threshold per billing cycle, after which speed may be reduced up to 2 Mbps; the terms also state that the policy may be amended. These figures are an example from those terms, not a rule for all Airtel plans or Indian broadband providers. Recheck the current Airtel Xstream Fiber terms for your plan.

Jio’s home-plan FAQ describes unlimited high-speed data and also says the provider may discontinue data services in cases including misuse, fraudulent, unauthorized, or commercial use. It says, “These are unlimited plans for home use only.” If you plan a continuous public broadcast, read the terms for your specific plan and ask the provider whether that use is permitted. See JioFiber Plans FAQ. These examples should not be generalized to other plans or providers.

Estimate data use from your actual settings
There is no single official monthly data-use figure for a 24/7 radio stream established here. Consumption depends on the actual encoder bitrate and operating time, and other devices on the connection use data too. A stream running continuously at a higher bitrate uses more data than one at a lower bitrate; check your encoder settings against the plan’s FUP rather than relying on the word “unlimited.”
3. Measure and steady the home connection
Test upload repeatedly under realistic conditions
- Run a speed test and note the upload result, not only download.
- Repeat at different times, including periods when your broadband is likely to be busy.
- Test with household devices active if that reflects normal use. This practical check matters because shared network activity can compete with the stream; it is not a provider guarantee.
- Compare the weakest representative upload result with the total bitrate you intend to send, retaining YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom for primary and backup bitrates.
YouTube cautions that even a high-speed office connection can be limited when many people share it. During broadcast, avoid large uploads, downloads, cloud backups, or other heavy traffic on the same connection where possible. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use Ethernet where practical
YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection for computer live streaming. Wired networking avoids some of the variability that can affect a wireless link between the computer and router. Use a cable long enough to reach safely; a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one suitable option, but it is not a required upgrade. The recommendation is about connecting the streaming computer to the router, not about changing the ISP plan. See YouTube’s filming tips.
Consider power resilience without overestimating it
A UPS for the modem/router or streaming computer may help during a brief local power interruption, within its capacity. It cannot keep the ISP’s network online during an external outage or guarantee end-to-end continuity. The available guidance does not establish a suitable UPS capacity or runtime for your equipment, so treat it as limited risk reduction, not an uninterrupted-stream solution.

4. Configure and test the actual radio stream
- Set the encoder before going live. Select the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to use; consult YouTube’s current encoder table for the exact combination. Ensure the total stream bitrate fits the upload capacity with headroom.
- Use the stream key carefully. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and use its stream key in your encoder’s live-stream destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. The exact Studio interface can change, so follow the current live-control-room prompts.
- Test the full setup before depending on it. YouTube recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the intended content. For a radio stream using a static image, test the actual audio chain, video image, and encoder configuration you expect to use.
- Check the preview and stream-health status. Confirm that audio is present and clean, the image is correct, and YouTube is receiving the stream as expected before treating the setup as ready.
- Monitor health messages during the broadcast. A successful initial test does not prove the broadband will remain steady for a full day. Watch for YouTube stream-health warnings and investigate upload capacity, local network competition, and power if the stream degrades.
Continuous radio also requires rights to the music and other material you broadcast. Broadband or encoder settings do not establish permission to rebroadcast audio. Verify that the actual recordings and other content are cleared for YouTube use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting.
5. Troubleshoot common interruptions
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health warns of insufficient bandwidth or the feed becomes unstable | Available upload may be below the stream’s total bitrate, may fluctuate, or may be shared by other traffic. | Measure upload again, reduce encoder bitrate or resolution using YouTube’s current recommendations, preserve headroom, and pause heavy uploads or downloads on the connection. |
| Speed test shows fast downloads but the stream struggles | Download speed does not establish adequate outbound upload capacity. | Check the upload result repeatedly and compare it with the encoder’s total bitrate rather than the plan’s download headline. |
| Performance is worse at busy times or when others are online | Other devices or shared network demand may be competing with the stream. | Repeat tests under realistic household use, reduce competing traffic during broadcast, and discuss observed upload performance with the provider. |
| Stream drops after substantial continuous use | The plan may have reached a fair-usage threshold or its post-threshold speed may be inadequate. | Check the exact plan’s FUP, current threshold, and post-FUP speed; calculate usage from your actual bitrate and operating time. |
| Local power flicker stops the encoder or router | Local equipment lost power; an ISP-side outage may still occur independently. | A suitably chosen UPS may bridge a brief local interruption, but confirm its limits for your equipment and do not rely on it for external network outages. |
| YouTube receives no stream or the wrong stream | The encoder may be disconnected, misconfigured, or using an incorrect or exposed stream key. | Check the live-control-room preview and encoder destination, verify the intended key securely in YouTube Studio, and reset it if compromised. |
