What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can keep using Apple devices and services while reducing dependence on iCloud by maintaining independent, verified copies of the data that matters. Use Apple’s direct iCloud Photos transfer for a separate Google Photos copy, follow Apple’s category-specific archive procedures for files, contacts, calendars and mail, and keep a local copy when you need an offline fallback.
Security and portability are different decisions. Advanced Data Protection can make more iCloud data inaccessible even to Apple, but it also makes recovery your responsibility. No single export preserves every Apple-service feature, metadata field, edit history and sharing relationship, so plan by data category and verify each copy before changing or deleting the original.

What “avoiding lock-in” actually involves
Lock-in is not simply having an Apple Account. It is the risk that your only usable copy of photos, documents, contacts, calendars or mail depends on one account, one format or one service’s sharing model. A practical low-lock-in setup has three separate goals:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Independent ownership: keep a copy you can open without relying on an iCloud subscription or Apple device.
- Portability: move or copy data to another service in a format that destination supports.
- Continuity: establish a routine for future changes, because a one-time transfer does not necessarily keep two services synchronized.
These goals can conflict. A destination may accept your photos but omit shared albums, some metadata or parts of Live Photos. A highly private iCloud configuration may remove Apple’s ability to help recover protected data. Treat every category as its own migration decision rather than looking for a single “export everything” button.

Separate iCloud security from data portability
Apple’s iCloud data security overview describes Standard Data Protection as the default. Data is encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers, while Apple retains the keys for many categories. That protects data during transmission and storage, but it does not create an independent copy outside Apple.
What Advanced Data Protection changes
Advanced Data Protection (ADP) extends end-to-end encryption to most iCloud data, including iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive and backups. Apple says iCloud Mail, Contacts and Calendars remain outside ADP’s end-to-end encryption model. Certain sharing arrangements also cannot use ADP’s end-to-end protection, including Shared Albums and content shared with “anyone with the link.”
Before enabling ADP, Apple requires you to configure a recovery contact or recovery key. Your device passcode or password is also a recovery method. A recovery contact does not gain access to your account or files; that person supplies a recovery code when you need one. If you lose access to your trusted devices and configured recovery methods, Apple says it does not have the encryption keys needed to recover protected data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWeb access changes as well. iCloud.com access is disabled by default when ADP is enabled. You can allow it, but a trusted device must approve temporary browser access. This is a security control, not a portability feature.
Choose the order that fits your risk
- Make and verify independent copies of important data.
- Confirm that you can recover your Apple Account with a device passcode, recovery contact or recovery key.
- Only then enable ADP if its additional protection is worth the recovery responsibility for you.
Apple’s direct iCloud Photos transfer currently cannot be used while ADP is enabled. If you plan to use that route, complete the transfer first or be prepared to adjust your security configuration according to Apple’s current instructions.

Apple provides a direct copy workflow for eligible iCloud Photos collections. It leaves the Apple copy in place; it does not delete or alter your iCloud Photos library. Google also warns that later changes in iCloud do not automatically appear in Google Photos, so regard this as a snapshot transfer rather than a permanent two-way connection.
Eligibility and preparation
Apple’s current instructions say the service requires two-factor authentication on your Apple Account, a Google Account and enough storage in the Google destination. Child accounts and Managed Apple Accounts are excluded. Availability is listed for more than 240 countries, but country support and destination options can change, so check the live Apple instructions for your region before starting.
ADP cannot currently be used with this direct transfer workflow. If ADP is enabled, review Apple’s current requirements before attempting the request.
Start the copy request
- Sign in to Apple’s Data and Privacy page.
- Choose Transfer a copy of your data.
- Follow the prompts to select the iCloud Photos transfer and sign in to Google when Apple directs you there.
- Confirm the destination account and available storage, then submit the request.
Apple says the transfer generally takes three to seven days. Keep using iCloud Photos during that period only if you understand that new changes may not be included in the copy. You can track or review the request through Apple’s transfer workflow.
What arrives in Google Photos
Apple says eligible content consists of copies of photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos. Albums may be transferred where possible, while videos are transferred separately. Names of transferred albums and videos begin with “Copy of,” which helps distinguish them from items created directly in Google Photos.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage

- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
The transfer has important exclusions and fidelity limits. Apple identifies the following:
- Shared Albums are not transferred.
- Smart Albums are not transferred.
- Photo Stream content is not transferred.
- Some metadata is omitted.
- Photos and videos stored in other folders or locations may be excluded.
- Some Live Photo data may not transfer completely.
- Where an item has edits, only the most recent edit is transferred in the relevant cases, not the original edit history.
Google’s help documentation independently notes that some content does not transfer and that future iCloud additions do not automatically appear in Google Photos. If albums, edit history, Live Photos or metadata are important, treat the Google copy as one destination, not the sole archival master.
See Apple’s current scope, eligibility and regional details at Transfer a copy of your iCloud Photos collection to another service and Google’s explanation at Transfer iCloud photos and videos to Google Photos.
Archive other iCloud categories independently
Apple publishes separate procedures for making copies of photos, files, contacts, calendars and email in Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud. The procedures differ by category, so do not assume that a photo-transfer request also covers documents, address books or messages.
Files in iCloud Drive
Use Apple’s iCloud Drive copy procedure to download the documents and folders you need, then place the downloaded files in a location you control. A computer folder or external SSD can serve as an independent archive. Preserve the folder hierarchy and original file names when those relationships matter, and open representative files from the copy rather than trusting that a download completed correctly.
Contacts
Follow Apple’s contacts-export procedure and save the resulting copy outside iCloud. Before replacing your address book, check that key names, phone numbers, email addresses, notes, groups and photographs (if those are important to your workflow) appear as expected in the destination application. Contact groups and application-specific fields are common points of incompatibility, so retain the original until the independent copy has been inspected.

Calendars
Use Apple’s calendar-archiving instructions for the calendars you need to preserve. Check recurring events, time zones, alerts, invitees and shared-calendar relationships after importing or opening the copy elsewhere. A calendar file can preserve event data without recreating every collaboration or notification behavior, so document which calendars are personal archives and which still depend on an active Apple account.

iCloud Mail
Apply Apple’s mail-copy procedure to messages and attachments that must remain available independently. Verify folders, sent mail, dates, attachments and any local search or filtering workflow in the destination you choose. Mail is not end-to-end encrypted under ADP, but that does not make it portable automatically; it still requires its own archive or migration step.
Use a local external SSD deliberately
An external SSD is an optional destination for downloaded archives, not an export mechanism by itself. First create the copy through Apple’s category-specific process, then store it on the drive. Choose capacity and compatibility based on the amount and type of data you actually have, and maintain another copy if losing that single physical drive would be unacceptable.
Verify every copy before changing the source
Do not cancel iCloud storage, delete photos or close an Apple Account immediately after an export request. Verification should be a deliberate checkpoint:
- Confirm the expected scope. Compare the categories and approximate item counts you intended to copy with what arrived.
- Open representative files. Test original documents, large files, common formats, edited photos, videos and Live Photos where applicable.
- Inspect metadata and structure. Check dates, locations, captions, album names, folder paths, contact fields and calendar recurrence.
- Test recovery. Sign in to the destination from a separate device or browser and confirm that you can retrieve the data without the original Apple device.
- Record exclusions. Write down items that did not transfer, such as Shared Albums or Smart Albums, so you can preserve them through a separate method.
- Keep the source during the verification window. Only remove the iCloud copy after you have decided that omissions and format changes are acceptable.
This process distinguishes an independent archive from a merely visible copy. A destination that displays your photos may still lack original edits, metadata or sharing relationships you expected.
Build a low-lock-in routine after the first export
A one-time archive becomes outdated as soon as you add new photos, documents or mail. Choose a maintenance pattern that matches how quickly your data changes:

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Photos: schedule periodic manual transfers or downloads and note the date of each snapshot. Because Apple’s direct transfer does not create automatic ongoing sync, new iCloud photos require a later action.
- Documents: keep working files in a folder you can copy or open outside iCloud, then archive completed projects on a predictable schedule.
- Contacts and calendars: export after major changes, before changing account settings and before relying on a new service for daily use.
- Mail: preserve important conversations and attachments independently instead of assuming an Apple Account will remain available forever.
- Sharing: maintain a list of shared albums, shared calendars and link-based permissions that need to be recreated manually elsewhere.
Use clear dated folders and a simple inventory document so you know which copy is current. If you encrypt a local archive, store its password or recovery material separately; an inaccessible backup is not a usable backup.
Compare the available routes
| Route | What it does | Ongoing synchronization | Main fidelity or access considerations | Key requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Photos to Google Photos transfer | Creates a copy while leaving the iCloud library intact | None; later iCloud changes do not automatically appear in Google Photos | Shared Albums, Smart Albums, Photo Stream content, some metadata, some Live Photo data and some locations are excluded; only the latest edit is transferred where applicable | Two-factor authentication, Google Account, sufficient Google storage, eligible account and supported region |
| Apple category-specific archive | Creates copies of selected photos, files, contacts, calendars or email | Manual; each category requires its own procedure | Results and preserved relationships vary by category, so inspect the copy before deleting the source | Follow Apple’s archive instructions and provide a destination you control |
| Local external SSD archive | Stores downloaded copies outside Apple’s services | Manual; you must create later snapshots | Retains whatever the export produced, but does not restore omitted metadata, sharing or edit history | Enough capacity, compatible hardware and a separate plan for protecting the drive |
| Advanced Data Protection | Changes how iCloud data is encrypted; it is not an export or migration | Does not create a second copy | Most iCloud data, including Photos, Drive and backups, receives end-to-end encryption; Mail, Contacts, Calendars and certain sharing modes remain outside it | Recovery contact or recovery key configured before activation; trusted-device approval for optional web access |
Understand Apple’s developer portability program
Apple also offers an Account Data Transfer API for approved third parties. Apple describes it as a developer-mediated way to request portability of certain user data, including in the European Union, United Kingdom and Japan. It is not a general consumer export tool that you can open and use to move your entire Apple Account.
For an individual user, the practical routes remain Apple’s consumer transfer and archive procedures. The API matters when an eligible third-party service has built an approved integration and explains exactly which data it can request.
Common mistakes that recreate lock-in
Deleting the source as soon as a request finishes
A completed transfer only means Apple processed the request. It does not prove that albums, metadata, edit history, contacts or sharing permissions survived. Verify first and keep the source until you have accepted the differences.
Assuming a copy is a live backup
The direct iCloud Photos workflow is a one-time copy. Future photos and edits need another transfer or archive action.
Treating ADP as a backup strategy
ADP strengthens encryption; it does not make an independent archive. Configure recovery methods and create separate copies before relying on it.
Ignoring account eligibility and geography
Child accounts and Managed Apple Accounts cannot use the described direct transfer, and service availability can vary by country. Check Apple’s current page rather than relying on an old walkthrough.

Expecting another service to reproduce Apple sharing
Shared Albums, Smart Albums, link permissions and collaborative calendars may not map to the destination. Preserve the underlying files and records separately, then recreate only the sharing arrangements you still need.
Quick Recap
A practical low-lock-in plan
- Inventory the Apple data you need to keep and identify must-preserve attributes.
- Complete the iCloud Photos copy if Google Photos is an appropriate destination and your account meets Apple’s requirements.
- Use Apple’s archive instructions separately for iCloud Drive, contacts, calendars and mail.
- Store an additional local copy when losing access to an online account would be unacceptable.
- Inspect files, metadata, structure and sharing-related omissions before making account or subscription changes.
- Set a recurring export schedule and keep a dated inventory of what each copy contains.
- Configure ADP recovery methods only after your independent copies are usable, then treat security and portability as ongoing, separate responsibilities.
