AppGallery is Huawei’s official app distribution platform. It provides app search, downloads, updates, management and sharing, with availability determined by the app, your country or region, your phone model and your software version. An app that appears for one Huawei user may be absent or incompatible for another.

AppGallery is not a universal catalogue of every Android application. Some apps rely on services that are unavailable on a particular Huawei device, require a developer’s separate installation route, or are offered more effectively as a website. The practical objective is therefore to choose the most trustworthy route that provides the features you actually need, rather than to force every app into a conventional download.

Huawei’s installation guidance uses AppGallery itself to install HMS Core and a HUAWEI ID. The names of buttons can vary slightly by EMUI, HarmonyOS, device model and region, but the sequence is consistent.

- Open Huawei’s official AppGallery installation page. Download and open the AppGallery installer from that page, not from an unsolicited pop-up, message or random download site.
- Review the Android warning, if one appears. Android can warn when an installer comes from outside the phone’s preinstalled store. This warning is a normal system safeguard, not proof that the file is malicious. Continue only when you have verified that you are on Huawei’s official installation page and understand what the prompt is asking.
- Launch AppGallery after installation. In AppGallery, search for HMS Core and install it. HMS Core supplies Huawei mobile-service components that some AppGallery apps need.
- Open the Me tab. Choose the sign-in or registration option for a HUAWEI ID.
- Create or sign in to your HUAWEI ID. Huawei’s guide allows registration with a phone number or an email address. Select the country or region that matches the country registered on the HUAWEI ID.
- Return to AppGallery and test a known listing. Search for an app you expect to use, open its listing and check that the publisher and compatibility information make sense before selecting Install.
Do not change the account country merely to make a listing appear. Region settings influence catalogue availability, payment options and search results, and changing them can create account or licensing complications.
How to download and update apps in AppGallery
Find the correct listing
Enter the app’s exact name in AppGallery. Open the result rather than installing directly from a search suggestion, and inspect the developer or publisher shown on the listing. Compare the spelling, logo, description and requested permissions with what you would expect from that developer. A similarly named app is not an acceptable substitute merely because it appears first.
Install and verify
If the listing indicates that it supports your phone and software, select Install and wait for AppGallery to complete the download. Read the permission prompts when the app first opens. A request for access that has no clear connection to the app’s purpose is a reason to deny it or stop and investigate.

Keep the app current
Use AppGallery’s management or update controls to see available updates. Updates can contain security fixes, service changes and compatibility adjustments. If an app disappears from your region or an update fails, record the app version and the exact error before trying another source; installing a second copy from an unrelated store can make future updates confusing.

What to do when an app is not in AppGallery
Use a deliberate order rather than downloading the first file offered by a search engine.
- Search AppGallery again using the exact name. Check alternate spellings only after confirming the expected publisher. An absent result may reflect a regional catalogue or a compatibility rule rather than a permanent lack of support.
- Search with Petal Search. Huawei says Petal Search prioritizes AppGallery listings, but it can also return official developer websites, third-party app-store sources, web links and results marked as potentially incompatible. The result type matters: a Petal Search result is not automatically an AppGallery download.
- Choose the developer’s official website when it offers a download. Confirm that the domain belongs to the developer, that the page identifies the same app and publisher, and that the file is intended for your device and operating-system version.
- Use the official web version if it provides the needed function. A browser-based service avoids installing an unverified package. Check whether the web version supports the specific task you need, such as account management, messaging, uploads or payments.
- Consider a Quick App where available. Huawei describes Quick Apps as installation-free services available through AppGallery. Availability and features vary by region and device, and examples in older Huawei support material may no longer be listed. Treat the current listing on your phone as the authority.
- Use a third-party app store only as a considered fallback. Verify the publisher, package identity, version, compatibility and permissions before installing. Make sure you know how updates will arrive and how to remove the app if the source becomes unavailable.
Understanding Petal Search results
Petal Search can combine several delivery routes in one results page. Huawei’s support material distinguishes AppGallery downloads, official links, web versions and third-party-store results. Read the label and destination before tapping an install button.

Huawei’s Portuguese help page describes a source order that moves from official websites to available third-party app-store sources, web links and third-party sources marked as potentially incompatible when an AppGallery listing is unavailable. The exact ordering and labels can change with the service and region. A “potentially incompatible” label concerns expected device compatibility; it is not a certification that the package is safe or unsafe.
Some Petal Search ranking features are region-specific. Huawei lists the United Kingdom, Ireland, India, the Philippines and Singapore for the rankings feature described in its support material. That list applies to that feature; it is not a statement that AppGallery’s entire catalogue is limited to those countries.

How to judge whether an alternative is safe
Prefer a verifiable source
The strongest practical choice is an AppGallery listing with the expected publisher. If that is unavailable, the developer’s own website or a web version normally gives you a clearer identity and update path than an unfamiliar store. Do not assume that a file is trustworthy because Petal Search displays it; the search service can surface several source types.
Check identity and package details
- Match the developer name, app name and branding with the service you intended to use.
- Check the version number, release date and device or operating-system requirements.
- Read the permissions before granting access. A request for contacts, messages, microphone, camera, location or storage should have an understandable purpose.
- Look for a clear privacy policy, support contact and update mechanism.
- Stop if the installer asks you to disable security protections, enter credentials into an unrelated page or install additional packages that the app does not explain.
Keep the phone and apps updated
Install operating-system, AppGallery, HMS Core and app updates from their legitimate update channels. An old package may have known vulnerabilities or may stop working after a service change. If a third-party source cannot explain how it signs and updates its packages, that uncertainty is itself a reason to choose a web version or another route.
Separate store controls from guarantees
Huawei currently describes AppGallery controls including developer identity verification, comprehensive monitoring, monthly testing, public supervision, malicious-behavior detection, vulnerability scanning and manual real-name verification. These are Huawei’s descriptions of its own platform, not an independent measurement of safety outcomes.
Huawei Device Co., Ltd.’s HUAWEI Mobile Services (HMS) Security Technical White Paper, issue V1.0 dated 2020-03-31, describes developer-qualification review; automated analysis for malicious behavior, vulnerabilities and privacy issues; manual rechecks; download-integrity and signature checks; app sandboxing; monthly retesting; and user reporting. It states: “All apps to be launched in HUAWEI AppGallery are tested by the dedicated security test team for HUAWEI AppGallery on actual devices in real-world scenarios.” That sentence is Huawei’s account of controls at the time of publication. The paper is not an independent audit, is from 2020, and cannot guarantee that every current app is harmless or compatible with every Huawei phone.

Choose based on the task, not simply on whether an icon can be installed. If you need occasional account access, a web version may be adequate. If you need background notifications, offline files or device hardware, verify those functions explicitly before abandoning the official app route.
Troubleshooting common problems
AppGallery will not install
- Confirm that the installer came from Huawei’s official installation page.
- Read the Android system warning and check that you understand the requested installation source.
- Ensure the phone has enough storage and a stable connection.
- Restart the phone, then retry the installation before seeking a different package.
HMS Core is missing or will not update
Search AppGallery for the exact name HMS Core. Install or update it before retrying an app that depends on Huawei mobile-service components. If the listing is unavailable, the app may not support that device or region through this route.
An app cannot be found
Check the exact spelling and publisher, then search Petal Search. Inspect whether the result is an AppGallery listing, official link, web version, Quick App or external source. Do not infer from one missing result that the app is unavailable everywhere; catalogue and licensing decisions can be regional.

The app installs but does not work
Read the listing and the developer’s requirements for your model and operating-system version. A “potentially incompatible” result is a warning to investigate the mismatch. Try the official web version if the app depends on services absent from the phone, and contact the developer when the required feature is unclear.
Updates are not appearing
Check which source installed the app. An app installed from a developer website or third-party store may not receive updates through AppGallery. Use the same trusted source for updates, or uninstall and reinstall from AppGallery only after confirming that your data and account information are backed up.
A permission or security prompt looks wrong
Cancel the installation or deny the permission. Recheck the publisher and source, and look for an official web alternative. Do not trade a confusing prompt for convenience.
A safe decision checklist
- Have I searched AppGallery using the exact app name?
- Does the listing show the developer I expected?
- Is the app marked compatible with this phone, operating-system version and region?
- If I used Petal Search, did I identify the result type and destination?
- Can the developer’s official website or a web version meet the need instead?
- If I am considering a Quick App, is it currently listed for this device and region?
- For a third-party source, have I verified publisher identity, package version, permissions, integrity and update method?
- Do I understand every permission and installation prompt?
What you should expect from AppGallery’s safety model
AppGallery’s review and monitoring controls can reduce the chance of downloading an obviously malicious or misidentified package, but they do not establish that every app is safe forever. Developers can change code after review, vulnerabilities can be discovered later, and an app can be legitimate yet incompatible with your phone. Huawei’s detailed technical description dates to March 2020, while the current AppGallery page describes ongoing controls without publishing an independent safety-outcome statistic. No authoritative independent figure establishes AppGallery’s catalogue completeness or overall safety rate.
