When the comparison passes every rule, the chain may match the price and add a discount or points. A third-party booking usually cannot be converted into a claim after the fact.
The practical challenge is not finding a lower headline price. It is proving that both offers have the same hotel, dates, occupancy, room, cancellation and payment terms, currency, taxes, mandatory fees and inclusions while the competing rate is still available for verification.

What a hotel price-match guarantee actually does
A price-match guarantee (also called a best-rate guarantee) is a conditional promise attached to a direct reservation. You book through the hotel chain’s website or app, locate a lower qualifying price on another public website, and ask the chain to verify it. If the offers meet the program’s rules, the chain adjusts the result according to its published benefit.
This is different from booking through an online travel agency (OTA) and asking the hotel to refund the difference. Most programs require a confirmed reservation made through the chain’s own channel before you submit a claim. The reservation must normally remain active while the claim is reviewed.

Guarantees are rules-based rather than automatic savings. A rate can look cheaper because it excludes taxes, requires prepayment, has a stricter cancellation deadline, applies only to logged-in members, bundles another product, or hides the hotel name. Any of those differences can make it non-comparable.
The eligibility test: every field must match
Use this checklist before you submit. If a single material term differs, assume the claim is at risk until the chain confirms otherwise.
- Property: the exact hotel, not merely the same city or brand.
- Dates and length: identical check-in and check-out dates, including the same number of nights.
- Occupancy: the same number of adults and children, with the same child ages where requested.
- Room category: the same named room or suite, view, bed configuration, size and accessibility features when listed.
- Inclusions: breakfast, meals, resort credits, parking, Wi-Fi, transfers and other included extras must match.
- Cancellation and payment: compare the cancellation deadline, refundability, deposit requirement, pay-now versus pay-at-property status and any no-show terms.
- Taxes and mandatory fees: compare the final amount, not just the pre-tax nightly figure. Resort fees, service charges and local taxes can change which offer is cheaper.
- Currency: use the same currency. IHG’s published rules specifically require the rates to be shown in the same currency.
- Availability: the competing offer must be publicly visible, immediately bookable and still available when the chain checks it.
A lower price that requires a login, a private code, a corporate credential, a loyalty status or a package purchase is often excluded. Public member rates can also be treated differently from unrestricted public rates, so read the specific chain’s terms.

Step-by-step: submit a claim without losing the room
- Start on the chain’s official site or app. Search the property and dates, set the correct occupancy and select a rate whose cancellation and payment conditions fit your trip. Complete the direct reservation and save its confirmation number.
- Open the full rate details. Record the room name, bed type, view, occupancy, inclusions, cancellation deadline, payment timing, taxes, mandatory fees, currency and total. Do not rely on a search-result headline.
- Check reputable public OTAs and comparison pages. Search the identical property and dates immediately after booking. Open the checkout or rate-detail view so you can see the final total and restrictions.
- Normalize the comparison. Set both offers to the same currency and confirm every checklist field. A “from” price, a per-person figure or a total that excludes taxes is not a reliable comparison.
- Capture evidence while the rate is live. Save the complete page URL, date and time, room description, cancellation terms, taxes and fees, currency and final total. Screenshots can support your explanation, but the chain’s own verification normally controls the decision.
- Submit the official claim form. Use the chain’s price-match or best-rate form and enter the direct reservation number, competing URL and all requested details. Submit inside the program’s time window and before any required minimum time before check-in.
- Keep both offers unchanged during review. Do not cancel the direct reservation while waiting. If the chain approves the claim, avoid changing dates, room type, occupancy or other reservation terms unless the program explicitly permits it.
- Read a denial against the terms. Recheck currency, cancellation policy, room category, public availability, taxes, mandatory fees, package or opaque status, and whether the competing rate disappeared before verification.

These figures reflect the chains’ published guidance available in 2026. Programs can change, and regional or brand exclusions may apply, so verify the live terms immediately before booking.

IHG: generous points, strict timing and verification
IHG’s Best Price Guarantee requires a confirmed reservation through an IHG direct channel. If a lower rate is available on a non-IHG website, IHG says it will match that rate and provide five times the IHG One Rewards points, up to a 40,000-point maximum.

The claim must be made within 24 hours of the direct booking and at least 24 hours before standard check-in. The comparison must use the same currency and the same room, dates, occupancy and rate conditions. IHG verifies the lower price itself; an image of a cheaper page does not override its determination.
Do not modify the reservation after approval when the terms prohibit changes. Changing dates, room type, occupancy or other material details can prevent the guarantee benefit from applying. Check the current terms for excluded geographies and brands before relying on the points.
Marriott: choose a discount or points
Marriott’s guarantee gives an approved claimant a choice between a 25% discount and 5,000 points. The published discount is 20% for Design Hotels. The comparison must be submitted within 24 hours of the direct booking.
Marriott’s rules focus on public, directly bookable rates. Opaque rates that conceal the hotel until after payment and package rates that combine a room with another travel product are excluded. A lower package total therefore does not establish a qualifying room-only comparison.
When comparing Marriott rates, open the full cancellation and tax details. A flexible public rate and a prepaid, nonrefundable rate are not the same product even if the room name is identical.

Hilton: the comparison must be at least 1% lower
Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee says that, after booking directly with Hilton, it will match a lower qualified price and give 25% off the stay. Hilton also states that the competing price must be at least 1% below the official price and immediately bookable.

That 1% threshold is measured against the qualifying official rate under Hilton’s rules, not necessarily against a search page’s rounded nightly figure. Compare the complete stay total and preserve the rate conditions so Hilton can verify the offer.
Hyatt: submit quickly and preserve the booked terms
Hyatt requires an online claim within 24 hours after a Hyatt.com booking. The reservation’s cancellation policy still governs the booking, even while a claim is being considered.
Because the applicable reward and exclusions can change, read the current Hyatt claim page before submitting. Confirm whether the room, rate type, taxes, fees, currency and public-availability requirements match your offer rather than assuming another chain’s rules apply.
How to document a rate so verification succeeds
Make one evidence record for each claim. Include:
- the direct reservation confirmation number and booking timestamp;
- the competing page’s complete URL and the timestamp when you viewed it;
- hotel name and address, dates, nights and occupancy;
- room name, bed type, view, size and included amenities;
- cancellation deadline, refundability, deposit and payment timing;
- nightly rate, taxes, mandatory fees, currency and final total;
- any displayed terms about membership, login, coupon codes, packages or opaque booking; and
- the exact claim-submission time.
Keep the direct reservation active and avoid repeatedly refreshing or changing search settings after you capture the comparison. Rates can change by currency, location, device, occupancy or inventory level. The chain needs to be able to reproduce a publicly bookable offer when it checks.

Common reasons claims fail
The booking was made through an OTA
Most guarantees are designed to move a booking to the chain’s direct channel. If you already booked through a third party, cancel according to that booking’s rules and make a new direct reservation only when the cancellation and price risk are acceptable. Do not assume the chain will convert an existing OTA confirmation into a claim.
The room is not truly identical
“Deluxe room” can describe different beds, views, sizes or occupancy limits. Compare the detailed room descriptions, not just a similar label. A breakfast-included rate cannot be matched to room-only, and a room with free cancellation cannot be matched to a nonrefundable offer.
The lower total excludes taxes or mandatory fees
A site may show a lower nightly figure while adding resort, destination, service or local charges later. Compare the final payable amount and the timing of each charge. If one site displays taxes in the total and the other does not, the offers are not yet normalized.
The rate is private, opaque or packaged
Member-only, logged-in, coupon, corporate, negotiated, app-exclusive, mystery-hotel and bundled package rates may be excluded. Marriott explicitly excludes opaque and package rates. A public rate must normally be visible and bookable without special credentials or a separate purchase.
The rate disappeared before verification
Inventory is live. A screenshot can show what you saw, but the chain may reject a rate that it cannot book or verify at review time. Submit immediately and provide the URL and timestamp.
The claim missed the deadline
Twenty-four hours is a short window, and some programs also require a minimum amount of time before check-in. For IHG, the claim must be both within 24 hours of booking and at least 24 hours before standard check-in. Do not wait for a later price drop if you intend to use the guarantee.
The currency or occupancy was different
Foreign-exchange movement can make a rate appear cheaper. Use the same currency and the same guest count, including children where relevant. Do not rely on your card issuer’s eventual conversion to prove that two displayed rates match.
Price-match guarantee versus simply booking the cheaper OTA rate
A guarantee can deliver a better overall result when the direct reservation preserves chain loyalty credit, elite-night credit, on-property support and a published reward. It also gives you a single direct booking to manage if the claim is approved.
An OTA may still be cheaper when its rate is private, opaque, packaged or materially different from the chain’s product. In that case, the rate is not a valid guarantee comparison, and booking it means accepting the OTA’s cancellation, payment and support rules. Compare the final, refundable cost and the value of any points or discount rather than the headline nightly number.
Calculate the real saving before you submit
Use the full stay total. For example, suppose the direct five-night total is $1,000 before any guarantee benefit and a qualifying competing total is $940 in the same currency with identical terms. A 25% discount under a program that applies it to the eligible stay would be calculated under that program’s rules; it is not automatically 25% of every tax or fee. A points award also has no fixed cash value until you decide how and when you will redeem it.
For IHG, the published reward is five times the points normally awarded, capped at 40,000 points. The cap means a higher-priced stay does not generate unlimited points. For Marriott, choose between the stated percentage discount and 5,000 points based on your expected redemption value. For Hilton, the published outcome is the verified match plus 25% off. Do not count a benefit until the chain approves the claim.
After approval: protect the benefit
- Save the approval message and updated confirmation.
- Confirm the adjusted price, reward selection and eligible nights.
- Do not alter the reservation unless the program says the change is allowed.
- Keep the original terms, including cancellation deadline and payment method, in your records.
- At check-in, verify that the reservation displays the expected rate or note; contact the chain before arrival if it does not.
If the chain denies the claim, ask for the specific rule that failed and compare it with your evidence. Rechecking the room category, cancellation terms, taxes, currency and public availability usually identifies the discrepancy. If the rate no longer exists, searching again later may produce a different result and does not prove the original claim.

- Need a flexible booking? Start with a directly booked refundable rate and compare only against another refundable rate with the same deadline.
- Found a lower public rate immediately? Capture the full terms and submit inside the chain’s deadline.
- Is the cheaper offer a package, mystery hotel, login-only deal or coupon? Treat it as ineligible unless the chain’s terms expressly include it.
- Would changing the reservation be necessary? Do not change it after approval when the program prohibits modifications.
- Is the reward worth more than the alternative? Select the discount or points option only after estimating your realistic redemption value and confirming which parts of the stay the benefit covers.
Terms are updated by chains and can vary by country, brand and booking channel. Read the current official guarantee page immediately before making the direct reservation, then submit while the competing rate is still visible and bookable.
