You don’t need Google Messages to use Google Voice. Voice has its own calling and texting screens, on the web at voice.google.com and in the Google Voice mobile app. Calls, texts and voicemail are all handled there, and Google’s help pages describe Voice as a number for calls, texts and voicemail that works in web browsers and on mobile devices.
Below: how to place calls and send texts from each, when a linked carrier number is worth adding, and the cost and safety limits to know first.

Direct use of the app or website doesn’t require a linked number. Linking is only for forwarding and carrier-based calling.

- Open voice.google.com and sign in.
- Use a supported browser. Google documents Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Safari.
- Go to Calls. Pick a recent caller, search your contacts, or type a number on the keypad. For an international call, include the country code.
- Check the Call as field. It should show your Google Voice number.
- If the call might cost money, check the rate first. Google’s help says that when its routing and cost message is missing, the call may not be going through Voice. In that case your carrier could charge for it.
Google notes that Bluetooth device buttons may not work for computer calls. If you call often from a computer, a wired or USB headset is the safer choice. That is a practical suggestion, not a Google requirement.

Make calls on a phone
Open the Google Voice app and place calls from its Calls tab. Google’s Android instructions say calls placed from the Voice app always use your Google Voice number.
Eligible personal accounts can also let the phone’s built-in calling app use the Voice number, through Voice settings. Google says this isn’t available for Google Workspace accounts, or for personal accounts where Voice is installed in a Work Profile.

If a call is routed through your mobile carrier instead of the internet, carrier minutes or charges may apply. Rates depend on the destination and the calling method.

Send texts without Google Messages
Open Messages on the Voice website, or use the Messages tab in the Voice app. Texts you send from either one go over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so Google Messages isn’t involved.

- Sending doesn’t use Voice credit.
- Google lists US and Canadian numbers as the supported destinations for texts sent from Voice.
- Data-plan charges may apply if you send over mobile data.
- Received texts may be chargeable under your mobile plan, according to Google.
Forward calls to another phone (optional)
Use forwarding if you want Voice calls to ring a phone you already carry.
- Open Voice settings and add a linked phone number.
- Verify the number when Google prompts you.
- Turn on call forwarding for that number.
Google allows up to six linked numbers. To get Voice call notifications on a computer, stay signed in with the Voice browser window open. Voice settings also have optional alerts, including forwarding messages, missed-call alerts and voicemail to Gmail.

Costs and limits
- Pricing varies. Google describes most US-origin calls to US and Canadian numbers as free. Some destinations cost extra, and international calls have listed rates that depend on destination and routing method, so check the rate before you call.
- Data use. Google’s internet-calling page says calls use about 0.2 MB of data per minute. The page shows no publication date, so treat that as a rough guide.
- No emergency calls. For personal accounts, Google directs you to use your device’s phone app for emergency calls, not Voice.
- Privacy. Google Voice Help states: “Google Voice saves and processes your call, text, and voicemail information.” Google’s help pages don’t give a retention period in that statement.
Rates, menu labels and rules in Voice change over time. The details here reflect Google’s help pages as of October 2026, so confirm anything cost-sensitive in the app.
