Conversation mode and Transcribe do different jobs
Google Translate puts two related but separate workflows in the app. Conversation is designed for a live, spoken exchange. Each person speaks in turn, and the app plays the translation through the phone speaker or connected headphones. Transcribe is designed for a continuous spoken passage and a saved text record. You finish the transcription and explicitly choose Save transcript.

| Have a two-way conversation with spoken translations | Live Translate, then Conversation | Turn-by-turn translated audio and on-screen text |

| Let two people facing each other read their own side of the exchange | Live Translate, then Face to face | A split-screen view with each language on its participant’s side |
Google’s Android instructions describe Conversation as: “Conversation: Translations play out loud on your phone speakers or headphones. Take turns speaking.” You can read the current Android and iPhone/iPad instructions in Google Translate Help for Android and Google Translate Help for iPhone and iPad.
Before you start
- Install or update the Google Translate app on your Android phone or iPhone/iPad, then open it.
- Check that both languages appear in the language pickers for the feature you intend to use. Language availability can differ between features and platforms.
- Allow microphone access when the app requests it. Without microphone permission, spoken conversation and transcription cannot capture speech.
- Decide whether the output should come from the phone speakers or headphones. Headphones are optional; Google documents both headphone and phone-speaker playback. Connected accessories can change which controls are available.
- For a more orderly exchange, have speakers pause while the other person talks. Live Translate’s microphone is designed to detect when one language stops and the other starts, so clear turns make that detection easier.
Button names and their positions can change with the platform, app version, or connected audio equipment. Follow the labels shown in your current app rather than assuming that an Android control will appear in exactly the same place on an iPhone or iPad.

Requirements, language checks, and audio planning
The practical requirements are simple, but each one can affect whether the controls appear. You need the current Google Translate app on a supported Android phone, iPhone, or iPad, a working microphone, and a language pair offered by the particular feature. A language that appears for typed translation is not automatically available for Transcribe, and a language available in one Live Translate mode may not appear in another. Check the pickers inside the mode you plan to use instead of relying on a general language list.
Microphone permission is needed for both a two-way spoken exchange and a Transcribe session. If permission was denied earlier, use the phone’s app-permission settings to allow microphone access, then reopen Translate. The exact settings path is controlled by Android or iOS rather than by Translate, so labels can differ between devices.
Plan the audio route before beginning. Conversation can play translated speech from the phone’s speakers or from connected headphones. Headphones can make the output easier to hear privately or in a noisy or shared space, but they are optional and are not required to save a transcript. The app does not require you to buy an accessory for the workflow. A connected headset can also change which audio controls are shown, so a button described in one setup may be unavailable in another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to use Live Translate Conversation mode
- Open Live Translate. In Google Translate, tap Live translate at the bottom of the app.
- Choose the two languages. Select the language each participant will speak or understand. Confirm the pair before anyone starts talking; changing languages later can interrupt the exchange.
- Select Conversation. This mode is for turn-taking speech and translated audio. Google says the result can play through the phone speakers or connected headphones.
- Speak one turn at a time. The microphone listens for one language, detects when that speaker stops, and then listens for the other language. Wait for the translated output before beginning the next turn.
- Replay a translation if necessary. Tap the on-screen text to hear that translation again.
- Pause or resume spoken output. Use the Speak control when you need to stop or restart audio playback.
- End the session. Tap Back to leave Live Translate when the conversation is over.
Conversation works best when participants leave a clear pause between turns. Speaking over one another makes it harder for the microphone to determine when one language has ended and the other has started. If the app begins listening on the wrong side, stop, verify the selected pair, and continue with one speaker at a time.
Tap a displayed translation when someone needs to hear it again rather than asking the speaker to repeat the original sentence. If audio has been paused, the Speak control can resume it. These controls affect playback; they do not create, export, or save a transcript.
Conversation mode is an immediate communication aid, not a documented automatic recording workflow. If you also need a durable text record, finish the conversation and run the separate Transcribe workflow described below.
Other Live Translate layouts and settings
Google’s Android and iPhone/iPad Live Translate help pages list several modes, including Conversation, Listening, Text only, and Custom. The choice depends on whether you need spoken turn-taking, a different listening arrangement, text without spoken output, or adjustable settings. The available controls and their positions can vary with the platform, language pair, and connected audio equipment. Conversation is the documented choice when two people need to take turns and hear translated speech.
Do not treat the names of these modes as evidence that every mode creates a saved text file. The documented save action belongs to Transcribe. If a written record matters, use Transcribe even when the live exchange used another Live Translate setting.

Use Face to face for a shared-screen exchange
When two people are sitting or standing opposite each other, choose Face to face within Live Translate. The display presents each speaker’s transcription and translation on that person’s half of the screen, so neither participant has to read the other person’s side upside down.
Face-to-face layout changes how the conversation is displayed; it does not turn the session into a saved transcript. If a written record is required, use Transcribe and save it after the spoken exchange. Both Google’s Android and iPhone/iPad Live Translate help pages describe Face to face, along with Conversation, Listening, Text only, and Custom settings modes. Some audio controls can be unavailable when a particular headphone or phone setup is connected.
A reliable two-stage workflow for conversation plus a record
If you need both immediate communication and text you can reuse, treat them as two stages rather than expecting one session to do both jobs. First, use Live Translate and Conversation so the participants can speak and hear the exchange. Face to face can make the display easier for people sitting opposite each other. When the spoken exchange is complete, open the speech or dictation control and start Transcribe with the same language pair, or use Transcribe for the passage that needs to be captured.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →At the end of Transcribe, tap Save transcript. This explicit action is important: Google’s Conversation instructions do not say that leaving Live Translate automatically creates a saved transcript. If you leave a Transcribe session without saving, do not assume the text will be available later. For an important record, open the saved item afterward and use Select all, Copy, or Share so another app has a working copy.
How to save a transcript in Google Translate
Google documents transcript saving under Transcribe, not as a save command inside the Live Translate Conversation instructions. Use these steps when the text itself matters.
- Open the speech controls. In Google Translate, tap the speech or dictation control, then select Transcribe.
- Choose the languages. On Android, choose the speaker and translation language pair at the bottom of the screen. On iPhone and iPad, choose each language at the top.
- Grant microphone permission. Approve the permission prompt if it appears. If the Transcribe control is missing or disabled, Google says the spoken language may not be supported for that feature.
- Let the app transcribe. Keep the speaker in the selected language while the text is being produced. You can monitor the transcription and translation as the passage continues.
- Save the finished text. When the speech is complete, tap Save transcript at the top. This is the explicit save action; stopping a Conversation session is not documented as an equivalent.
On Android, the language pair is selected at the bottom of the Transcribe screen. On iPhone and iPad, the language controls are at the top. That difference explains why an instruction that is accurate on one platform may look wrong on the other. If a control is not present, first verify the platform, then check the selected spoken language and microphone permission.
The Android and iPhone/iPad Transcribe instructions are available in Google Translate Help for Android and Google Translate Help for iPhone and iPad.

- WEARABLE TRANSLATOR: The compact 1.44 oz device measures 2.36 x 2.36 x 0.39 inches. Use the collar clip or included lanyard to keep it accessible while traveling, working, or shopping.
Copy or share transcript text
Open a saved transcript and select the passage you need. Choose Select all for the entire record, then tap Copy to place the text on the clipboard or Share to send it to another app. Sharing is useful when the transcript needs to move into a notes app, email, document, or messaging tool; it does not require you to retype the translated text.
Select only the relevant passage when the saved record contains more speech than you need. The selection and sharing controls operate on transcript text, so they are separate from the audio playback controls used during Live Translate. Copying or sharing also gives you a practical way to preserve a working version in the destination app, without assuming anything about how Translate history or synchronization handles saved transcripts.
Which workflow should you choose?
| Your goal | Path in Google Translate | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Two people need to communicate aloud in different languages | Live translate > choose languages > Conversation | Take turns; translations can play through speakers or headphones. |
| Two people need an easy face-to-face reading layout | Live translate > choose languages > Face to face | Each participant sees transcription and translation on their half of the display. |
| One speaker needs a continuous translated text record | Speech/dictation control > Transcribe > choose languages | Tap Save transcript when finished. |
| You need to reuse the saved words elsewhere | Open Saved transcripts (Android) or Saved > Transcripts (iPhone/iPad) | Select a passage or Select all, then Copy or Share. |
| You want private audio output in a noisy or shared space | Conversation with compatible headphones | Headphones are optional; availability of controls depends on the phone and accessory setup. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using Conversation when you need a saved file. Conversation supplies live translated audio and on-screen text, but its instructions do not include automatic transcript saving. Use Transcribe and tap Save transcript.
- Assuming all language lists are identical. Check the pair in the exact feature you are opening. Support can differ by language, feature, and platform.
- Speaking over the other person. The automatic turn detection works more predictably when each speaker pauses and waits for the translated output.
- Looking in the wrong place for a saved item. Android uses the app menu’s Saved transcripts; iPhone and iPad use Home, Saved, then Transcripts.
- Confusing playback with saving. Tapping text to replay it or using Speak to pause and resume audio does not save a transcript.
- Blaming a missing button on the app alone. A disabled Transcribe control can indicate an unsupported spoken language, while a missing audio control can relate to the connected headset or phone setup.
Troubleshooting common problems
“Transcribe” is unavailable
First check the spoken-language selection. Google states that Transcribe may be unavailable when the spoken language is not supported. Try another supported language pair shown by the app, and verify that microphone permission is enabled in the phone’s app settings. Do not assume that a language available for ordinary text translation or Conversation is automatically available for Transcribe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The app is listening to the wrong person or switching turns unexpectedly
Return to the selected language pair and confirm that each participant is speaking the language assigned to that side. Use clear, separate turns instead of overlapping speech, because Conversation relies on detecting when one language stops and the other begins. If the app has paused audio output, use Speak to resume.
There is no sound
Check the phone’s media volume and whether audio is being routed to connected headphones. Conversation supports phone-speaker playback as well as headphones, but the controls shown can vary with the connected equipment. Disconnecting an accessory or switching the output route may restore the expected control; the exact options depend on the device setup.
You cannot find the saved item
Use the correct platform path: Android uses the app menu’s Saved transcripts; iPhone and iPad use Home > Saved > Transcripts. If you left Transcribe without tapping Save transcript, there may be no saved item to retrieve.
You expected Conversation to create a transcript automatically
Run Transcribe separately. Google’s Conversation and Transcribe instructions describe different workflows, and the Conversation steps do not include an automatic save action. For a record, start Transcribe, finish the passage, and tap Save transcript.
The labels do not match these steps
Google changes labels and availability by platform, feature, language, and connected audio equipment. Update the app, look for the current Live translate, Conversation, Face to face, Transcribe, and Save transcript labels, and use the platform-specific help pages linked above when a control is in a different location.

Saved transcripts are not the same as Translate history
Google also offers a separate translation-history feature. On Android, Google says cloud-synced translation history for new entries requires signing in and enabling Web & App Activity; newly synced entries may take a few hours. Those history instructions do not establish that saved Transcribe transcripts sync in the same way or follow identical retention rules.
Use Save transcript and the platform’s saved-transcript location when your goal is to keep and retrieve a Transcribe session. Do not rely on the general history screen as proof that a saved transcript was stored or synchronized. If you need the text in another service, select it and copy or share it directly after saving.
