It is a scouting aid, not a live feed, a measurement tool, proof that a site is accessible, or permission to reuse Google’s imagery.
1. Find places with Street View coverage
Search for a place or area in Google Maps, then open Street View where imagery is available. Google’s coverage overview indicates coverage in blue; zoom in for more detail. Coverage is not universal, so a blank area does not necessarily mean the location itself is absent—it may simply have no Street View imagery.

Street View imagery may be Google-owned or contributor-provided. Google says its own imagery receives automatic face and license-plate blurring; contributor imagery is identified by attribution. Check the attribution if the image source matters to your notes or project planning.

2. Scout each view with a consistent checklist
Move through the available views as if you were approaching the location, rather than judging it from one frame. Record what the imagery visibly shows, and keep observations separate from assumptions about dimensions, access, or present-day conditions.

- Scale and context: Describe the apparent relationship between the street, building fronts, neighboring structures, and open spaces. Treat these as visual impressions, not verified measurements.
- Distinctive details: Note vegetation, signs, sightlines, silhouettes, facade features, and other shapes that could help distinguish or inspire a setting.
- Image context: Record the displayed capture date when available, the apparent time period, and anything that may have changed since the imagery was collected.
- Unknowns: Mark anything that needs a current source, an on-site check, or permission from an owner or authority.
A notebook or spreadsheet can make candidate comparisons easier, but neither is required to use Street View.
3. Compare candidate locations without treating impressions as scores
Use the same checklist for every candidate so the comparison stays useful. These are scouting dimensions, not Google ratings or measured results.

| What to compare | What to record | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Approach and street configuration | Visible route, layout, turns, and apparent street scale | Exact measurements, current road conditions, or whether a route is open |
| Surrounding context | Building frontage, neighboring structures, vegetation, and open space | Ownership, interior details, or what is outside the camera’s view |
| Visual landmarks | Signs, silhouettes, sightlines, and distinctive shapes | Whether a detail is still present or may be reproduced without permission |
| Image timing | Displayed capture date, when available, and apparent period | Present-day accuracy or a complete record of the location’s past |
| Remaining uncertainty | Questions that require current sources, an on-site visit, or authorization | Access rights, safety, production suitability, or legal clearance |
4. Check when the imagery was captured
Street View is not real time. Google says imagery may be months to years old by the time it is collected and processed. Treat every detail as a dated visual reference rather than a report on current conditions. If a sign, building, road feature, or other detail matters to your project, verify it independently before relying on it.
5. Look for older imagery in Google Earth
Historical views are available only where Google Earth provides dates for that location. Google’s historical Street View guidance describes the basic process:
Rank #3
- The 2.2” high-resolution display is easy to read, even in bright sunlight
- Get long battery life of up to 168 hours in standard mode and up to 1,800 hours in expedition mode with 2 field-replaceable AA batteries (not included)
- Pair with the Garmin Explore app on your compatible smartphone for wireless software updates, trip planning, Active Weather, smart notifications and additional mapping
- Get automatic cache updates from Geocaching Live, including descriptions, logs and hints when paired to the Garmin Explore app on your compatible smartphone
- Multi-GNSS support gives access to multiple global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS) to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- Open Google Earth and enter Street View for the location.
- Choose the history or “See more dates” control if it appears.
- Select one of the dates shown on the timeline to view the available imagery.
The timeline shows only the dates available for that place. Comparing those views can reveal visible changes, but a missing older image is not evidence that a feature or location did not exist before the earliest date shown.

Street View shows what a camera could see when it passed; it does not establish that a location is currently accessible or that you may enter, film, or produce there. Google describes Street View as imagery from public roads in ordinary cases, with select partner-arranged exceptions, and provides a way to report imagery that should be protected. See Google’s Street View privacy information for its explanation of imagery and reporting.

Before travel, production, or making a claim about real-world access, check current information and obtain permission from relevant property owners or authorities. Visible from a public road does not mean open to visitors or cleared for a shoot.
Viewing imagery for research does not, by itself, give you rights to copy it or incorporate it into a released game, film, publication, or other project. For Google Maps Platform Customer Applications, Google’s terms of service require applicable attribution and restrict scraping, rehosting, and creating content from Google Maps Content. The rules for a particular creative project depend on how the imagery or content is used and which terms apply. Check the current terms and obtain permission as needed before reproducing imagery or building project content from it.
