Download each ebook in the Google Play Books mobile app while you are still connected, then confirm that the title shows the Downloaded icon. That is the preparation Google documents for reading without an internet connection on Android phones and tablets, and on iPhone and iPad. Manga chapters are an explicit exception: Google says they are currently unavailable for offline reading.
What to do before your connection drops
Offline reading works only for books that have finished downloading to the device. Open Google Play Books while you have internet access, choose the titles you expect to need, and wait for each one to show its downloaded status. Do not rely on a book merely appearing in your library; the library listing and an offline copy are different things.

Google’s official instructions cover downloading ebooks in the Play Books mobile app. They do not establish a desktop-browser procedure for offline reading, and they do not promise that every item in a library can be downloaded. If a title is important for a flight, commute, outage or trip, prepare and verify it on the mobile device you will carry.
Google describes the result this way: “You can download ebooks from Google Play Books onto your mobile devices to read anywhere, even when you don’t have an internet connection.” See the platform-specific instructions in Google Play Help for Android and Google Play Help for iPhone and iPad.

Prepare more than a few minutes ahead
A download that has only started is not the same as a completed offline copy. Give the app time to finish every selected title, especially when you are preparing several books. A weak connection, a large reading list or a device with little free space can make last-minute preparation risky. The safest routine is to choose the titles earlier, keep the device connected until the status changes, and perform a final check before entering a dead zone.
Use the device on which you intend to read. The documented workflow starts in the mobile app, so downloading a book on one device should not be treated as proof that another phone, tablet or computer has its own offline copy. If you switch devices, open Play Books there, sign in to the appropriate account and check the title’s status again.
Android: download a book for offline reading
Download one title
- Connect your Android phone or tablet to the internet.
- Open the Google Play Books app.
- Open your library.
- Find the ebook you want available offline.
- Tap Download beside the book.
- Wait for the download to finish and check that the Downloaded icon appears.
Perform the last check before leaving Wi-Fi or mobile coverage. A title without the downloaded indicator should be treated as not ready, even if its cover and title remain visible in the library. If you have a particular chapter, reference book or travel guide in mind, open that exact title and verify its status rather than checking only that the library loads.

Repeat the process for each book you want available. The app’s library can contain many items, but the offline preparation is title by title unless you use Android’s documented multi-selection feature. Keep the app connected while several downloads are in progress and verify the result after the final one completes.
Download several Android books together
Google documents multi-selection for Android app versions 2023.04.17.00 and up. In the library:
- Tap and hold one book.
- Select the other books you want to prepare.
- Tap Download.
- Remain connected until the selected titles show the Downloaded icon.
Multi-selection saves repeated taps when you are preparing a reading list, but it does not remove the need to verify the individual results. Check that every selected title has the downloaded indicator, not just the first title you selected. If one item is still missing that status, leave the device connected and address that title separately.
If the multi-select controls do not appear, download titles individually using the single-book path. The documented version qualification applies to the Android app; device menus and behavior can vary. Do not assume that an older app build supports the same batch controls simply because the books appear in the library.
Choose an SD card for new Android downloads
On Android, Google provides an optional destination for newly downloaded books. Open your profile, choose Play Books settings, then go to Uploads & downloads and select Download new books to SD card.
This setting affects new downloads; it is not a command to move every existing book. If books were already downloaded to internal storage, changing the destination does not by itself establish that those files have moved. For a new preparation session, set the destination first, then download the titles and check their status.
Google also notes that if Play Books cannot download to the card, it uses internal storage instead. That fallback means the title may still become available, but it may consume space in a different location than you expected. Confirm the downloaded icon after changing the destination, because the fallback can be invisible until you check the result. SD-card support, permissions and available storage differ by device.

If you are relying on an SD card for a trip or outage, make sure the card is inserted and usable before beginning. The official setting is for new books, so prepare any existing titles through the normal library status check as well.
iPhone or iPad: download a book for offline reading
- While connected, open the Google Play Books app.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used for your Play Books library.
- Open your library and select the Books tab.
- Tap Download beside the title you want to keep on the device.
- Wait for the Downloaded icon to appear.
The account step matters when a device has more than one Google Account or was recently set up. If the expected title is missing, check the signed-in account before attempting a download. A library associated with a different account may not show the book you purchased or otherwise added to Play Books.
On iPhone and iPad, use the Books tab rather than assuming that every library view has the same controls. Open the title’s listing, start the download while connected, and wait for the status to change. Complete the download while connected; the documented instructions do not describe a way to begin an unfinished download after the device has already gone offline.
For several titles, repeat the download action for each book shown in the Books tab. The cited iPhone and iPad instructions do not state an equivalent multi-book selection workflow, so do not rely on the Android long-press sequence on Apple devices.
Prevent downloads from using mobile data
Preparing a large reading list can consume a substantial amount of data. Both platform instructions provide a Wi-Fi-only control, but the menu wording differs. Turn the setting on before starting a batch of downloads if you want Play Books to wait for Wi-Fi.

Android setting
Open your profile, choose Play Books Settings, go to Uploads & downloads, and turn on Download over Wi-Fi only. Start the downloads while connected to Wi-Fi and leave the app enough time to complete them.
A Wi-Fi-only rule can leave a title waiting rather than ready if the device is connected only through cellular data. That is expected behavior for a setting designed to avoid mobile-data use, not evidence that the title is permanently unavailable. Connect to Wi-Fi, resume the preparation and check the downloaded status before disconnecting.
iPhone and iPad setting
Open your profile, select Play Books Settings, and turn on Download only over Wi-Fi. The wording is slightly different from Android, but the purpose is the same: prevent Play Books from using mobile data for book downloads.
After enabling the option, connect to a Wi-Fi network and start or resume each download. Do not leave for a flight, commute or outage while titles are still waiting for Wi-Fi. The downloaded icon is the useful confirmation that the restriction has not left a book incomplete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse this pre-outage checklist
- Pick the titles: Open the library and identify the books you may need without service.
- Start early: Download while the connection is reliable, rather than immediately before boarding or entering a dead zone.
- Use the right device: Prepare the phone or tablet you will actually carry and use for reading.
- Check every title: Look for the Downloaded icon on each book.
- Confirm the account: On iPhone and iPad especially, verify that Play Books is signed in to the Google Account containing the books.
- Check storage: Make sure the device or selected SD card has room for the files you are preparing.
- Review data settings: Use the Wi-Fi-only option if you do not want the downloads to use cellular data.
- Watch for fallback: On Android, remember that Play Books may use internal storage if it cannot download to the selected SD card.
- Test before leaving: While still connected, open a downloaded title and make sure it is the copy you intended to prepare.
- Recheck after changes: If you change the account, storage destination or Wi-Fi setting, verify the downloaded icon again.
The downloaded icon is the decisive readiness check. Covers, shelves and library entries can remain visible even when an offline copy has not finished. A title that is still showing a Download action, waiting for Wi-Fi or missing the status should remain on your preparation list.

The core result is the same on both platforms: a completed mobile download, identified by the downloaded icon, is what you prepare for reading without an internet connection. The differences are the navigation details, the Android multi-select instruction and Android’s documented SD-card destination.
What you can and cannot assume offline
Offline ebooks in the mobile app
The documented workflow is for ebooks downloaded in the mobile Play Books app. Once a title has completed its download and displays the downloaded icon, it is the title Google identifies as available for reading without an internet connection. That status should be checked on the device where you plan to read.
Offline preparation is not the same as merely saving a library view. If the app can show a cover but has not completed the title’s download, the visible catalog entry does not establish offline access. Use the status indicator as your practical test.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Manga chapters are not currently available offline
Google’s Android and iPhone/iPad help pages explicitly say that manga chapters are currently unavailable for offline reading. Do not add manga to an outage reading list on the assumption that the normal ebook download control guarantees offline access.
This is a content limitation, not a step that can be fixed by changing the Wi-Fi setting, selecting an SD card or repeating the download. Treat manga separately from ebooks covered by the documented workflow.
A library is not a guarantee that every item can download
The help pages do not say that every library item is eligible for offline storage. They establish the download workflow for selected books, not a universal guarantee for every format, chapter or title. Treat the presence of the Downloaded icon—not catalog membership—as the evidence that a particular book is ready.
If a title does not offer the expected control or never reaches the downloaded status, do not promise yourself that it will work after the connection drops. The documented instructions support preparing titles that can be downloaded and verified; they do not establish a workaround for every item in a library.

Desktop and other e-readers
The cited help pages mention that selected books can be exported from a computer for use on other e-readers, but they do not establish a desktop-browser offline-reading workflow or explain all title-specific download restrictions. Do not assume that opening Play Books in a desktop browser creates the same offline copy as the mobile app.
If you need another e-reader, follow the export instructions applicable to that device and title rather than relying on this mobile procedure. The steps in this guide are specifically for downloading in the Play Books app on Android, iPhone or iPad.
Troubleshoot before you lose connectivity
The book is visible, but there is no downloaded icon
- Reconnect to a reliable network and tap Download beside the title.
- Wait for the operation to finish instead of closing the app as soon as it starts.
- Check available internal storage or the selected SD card.
- On Android, verify whether the SD-card destination is usable; Google says Play Books falls back to internal storage if it cannot download to the card.
- If Wi-Fi-only downloading is enabled, connect to Wi-Fi rather than waiting on cellular service.
- Check the library again and confirm the downloaded icon before going offline.
If the status still does not appear, keep the device connected and treat the title as unprepared. The visible listing alone is not a sufficient confirmation.

The expected book is missing from the library
- On iPhone or iPad, confirm that Play Books is signed in to the same Google Account that owns or contains the book.
- Return to the library’s Books tab on iPhone or iPad.
- On Android, search the library for the exact title and try the download control from its listing.
- If you changed devices, verify that you are checking the library in the app on the device you intend to carry.
Do not substitute a different account simply because it is already active on the device. The account associated with the library is part of finding the correct title, particularly during setup or when multiple accounts are present.
Downloads are using cellular data
Turn on the platform’s Wi-Fi-only setting before starting the preparation: Android uses Download over Wi-Fi only under Uploads & downloads; iPhone and iPad use Download only over Wi-Fi in Play Books Settings. Then connect to Wi-Fi and resume the downloads.
After the setting is enabled, do not interpret a paused or waiting download as completed. The purpose of the option is to prevent cellular transfer, so the title still needs a Wi-Fi connection and a final downloaded-icon check.
You are already offline and the download never finished
Google’s cited guidance explains how to download while connected, but it does not explain recovery for a download that was never completed. If the title lacks the downloaded icon, the documented remedy is to reconnect and complete the download; there is no supported offline step established by these instructions that can finish it without connectivity.
For a planned outage, return to a connection as soon as possible, complete the download, and verify the status before relying on the book again. If reconnecting is impossible, choose only titles that already showed the downloaded icon before service was lost.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When an Android tablet makes sense
You do not need a new device if you already have a compatible Android phone or tablet. A larger Android tablet can be an optional reading device for someone who wants a bigger screen, but no particular model is required and hardware alone does not guarantee that a title will be available offline. The same Play Books preparation steps and title limitations still apply.
If you buy or borrow a tablet for reading, install or open Google Play Books, sign in to the account containing your books, download the titles on that tablet and verify each downloaded icon. A book prepared on a different phone is not a substitute for checking the tablet you will actually use.
Short answer
Before the outage, open Google Play Books, download the ebooks you want on your phone or tablet, and verify the Downloaded icon for each one. Android users can select several books together in app version 2023.04.17.00 and up, choose an SD card for new downloads and enable Download over Wi-Fi only. iPhone and iPad users should open the Books tab, confirm the correct Google Account and use Download only over Wi-Fi if needed.
Remember that Google currently excludes manga chapters from offline reading, that a library entry does not guarantee downloadable offline access, and that the cited instructions do not establish a desktop-browser offline method. If a title has not completed its download, plan to reconnect before expecting it to work offline.
