Each has different controls, hardware and availability.
To begin any trip, search for a destination, tap Directions, choose a travel mode and tap Start. If Google Maps shows alternate routes as gray lines, tap the line you want. The sections below show where to enable 3D details, how to adjust voice and route options, how lane guidance works in supported cars, and how to use camera-based walking directions safely.

What Google Maps “immersive navigation” includes
Google’s help pages describe several visual guidance features rather than one universal Immersive Navigation switch. Choosing the correct feature matters because driving navigation, walking navigation, phone apps, Android Auto, CarPlay and Maps built into a car do not expose the same controls.

Start navigation and pick a different route
On a phone
- Open Google Maps and search for a place, address or business, or select a point on the map.
- Tap Directions.
- Select the travel mode, such as driving or walking.
- Check the proposed route and any gray alternatives.
- Tap Start to begin turn-by-turn navigation.
When alternate routes appear as gray lines, tap the line for the route you prefer before or during route selection. The highlighted route is the one Maps will use. Driving navigation needs a GPS signal, permission for Maps to access the device’s location and permission to use the device’s audio speakers. If any of those are blocked, route positioning or spoken guidance can fail.
Change the route while traveling
To choose a different path, open the route choices shown on the map or information card and select another available line. Maps may offer alternatives because of traffic, road restrictions or different travel times. A route that is gray on the map is an option, not necessarily a recommendation; review the arrival time and road conditions before switching.
Add a stop
Adding a stop is supported in the route-customization flow for Maps built into a car. The exact on-screen controls depend on the vehicle’s interface and market, so use the car display’s route card rather than assuming the phone-menu layout is available. Google documents this workflow separately for built-in car Maps at its car-navigation help page.
How do I turn on 3D buildings in Google Maps navigation?
3D map details are enabled from Navigation settings, not from the normal map-type button. The setting applies during an active driving trip and may also appear in the vehicle projection systems listed below.
Android phone or tablet
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings, then Navigation.
- Under Map display, tap Map detail.
- Select 3D.
Google’s current Android help page says 3D map details during active driving navigation are available in the United States on certain device types running Maps version 26.27 or above. The same page says the feature can apply on the mobile device and Android Auto. If your phone meets the version requirement but the option is absent, your device type, location or Android Auto configuration may not be supported.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then Navigation.
- Under Map display, open Map detail.
- Choose 3D.
Google specifies United States availability on iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, iPhone 14 or later, with 3D details shown during active driving navigation on the mobile device and CarPlay in supported cities. An iPhone model that is technically new enough can still lack the view when the city or CarPlay deployment is unsupported.
What the 3D view changes
During a supported drive, buildings, overpasses, terrain and related structures are rendered with depth. That can make a complex interchange or dense downtown block easier to recognize than a flat map. It is a visual aid, not a replacement for spoken turns, road signs or lane markings.
The visual trade-off: 3D versus layers
Google says enabling 3D map details turns off the traffic and satellite layers during navigation. If you depend on traffic coloring or aerial imagery, leave 3D off and use the standard map display. This is a deliberate trade-off rather than a temporary loading problem.
Why 3D can switch back to 2D
Performance problems, including overheating or loss of connection, can cause Maps to switch to 2D for the rest of that drive. Google says the 3D view can return on the next drive after performance recovers. Closing other demanding apps, reconnecting the phone and allowing it to cool can help, but there is no in-trip control that forces 3D back when Maps has switched to protect performance.
How to use raised buildings along a route
Raised buildings are distinct from the full 3D map-detail mode. Google’s Android documentation places a Raised buildings routes control in Navigation settings:

- Tap your profile picture or initial in Google Maps.
- Choose Settings and then Navigation.
- Look for the Raised buildings routes option and turn it on or off.
During navigation, expand the information card to see actions that can include route search, directions, traffic display, satellite map, raised buildings and settings. The available actions change with platform, route and context, so a control documented for Android should not be assumed to exist on iPhone, Android Auto, CarPlay or every car display. In areas that do not support the full 3D details, Google says raised buildings may appear instead.

Change guidance volume
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Go to Settings > Navigation.
- Under Guidance volume, choose the level you want.
When an iPhone is connected to CarPlay and navigation is speaking, Google’s iPhone instructions say to use the car’s volume controls. The vehicle may have a separate volume level for spoken directions, media and alerts, so adjust the control while Maps is actively speaking if the setting appears ineffective.
Use the in-navigation information card
While a trip is running, expand the information card on the map. Depending on the device and situation, it can expose route search, directions, traffic, satellite, raised-building and settings actions. Because these controls are context-dependent, look for the label that is actually displayed instead of relying on a fixed button position from another platform.
Keep location and audio permissions available
GPS and location permission let Maps calculate and maintain your position; audio permission and an available speaker let it deliver spoken turns. If the blue location marker is inaccurate, check the phone’s location permission for Google Maps and move to an area with a clearer view of the sky. If the map moves correctly but you hear nothing, check Maps’ guidance volume, the phone’s media volume and the car’s audio source.
Route guidance in a car: phone projection versus built-in Maps
Maps displayed through Android Auto or CarPlay is not identical to Maps that is installed in the vehicle. A built-in car system has its own route-customization screens and its own compatibility limits.

Choose another route on the car display
Google’s built-in-car instructions describe selecting another gray route from the car’s map screen and adding a stop. Use the vehicle’s touch display, controller or voice interface according to the manufacturer’s implementation. A route option visible on a phone may not be exposed on the car screen.
Enhanced live lane guidance
Enhanced live lane guidance uses the vehicle’s camera connection to provide lane information. Google requires permission for camera access to the Google Maps camera extension. The feature is limited to certain cars, countries and road sections, and vehicle availability can also depend on the manufacturer, region and data plan. There is no universal phone setting that enables it in every car.
If the lane prompt does not appear, first check whether the specific vehicle and road segment are eligible, then confirm that the camera extension permission was granted. A normal turn arrow or lane image in phone-based Maps should not be treated as evidence that enhanced live lane guidance is active.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I make Google Maps show which lane to use?
Lane information is most dependable when Maps has a supported road segment and an accurate GPS position. In a built-in car, enhanced live lane guidance additionally needs the eligible camera connection described above. On a phone or projection display without that feature, Maps may still show standard lane guidance when map data supports it, but Google does not promise the enhanced camera-based view on every device.
- Start navigation early enough to read the next turn and lane instruction.
- Follow the road’s painted arrows and signs if they conflict with an on-screen suggestion.
- Keep location permission and a stable connection available so the route can update.
- Do not change lanes solely because a visual animation appears; verify the actual road markings.
When a lane prompt is missing, that may reflect unsupported road data rather than a disabled setting. Check the route on another eligible road segment before concluding that the device is malfunctioning.

How do I use Live View walking directions?
Google calls the camera-based walking experience Lens in Maps. It is separate from 3D driving navigation and is intended for Android walking trips.
- Search for a destination in Google Maps.
- Tap Directions.
- Select Walking.
- Tap Navigate.
- Follow the prompts that help Maps identify your location.
- When the camera view appears, use the arrows and real-world landmarks to orient yourself and follow the next walking instruction.
Lens in Maps is not intended for use in a moving vehicle. Google recommends raising the camera view only when it is needed, such as at the start of the walk, at a turn or near arrival, and putting the phone away once you know where to go. This reduces distraction and keeps the camera from being used continuously while you walk.
When Lens cannot identify your position
Move to a place with visible buildings, signs or other recognizable surroundings and follow the on-screen prompts again. If the camera view remains uncertain, return to the standard walking map and use the blue location marker and spoken or visual turn instructions. Lens is an orientation aid, not a guarantee of precise positioning in every street, indoor area or low-visibility condition.

Which immersive option should you use?
| Your situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Driving in a supported US phone or city | 3D map details | Adds depth to buildings, terrain and interchanges during active navigation |
| You need traffic colors or satellite imagery while driving | Standard 2D map | Those layers are disabled when 3D map details are enabled |
| Android route where buildings are difficult to distinguish | Raised buildings routes | Provides a separate raised-building route view when available |
| Eligible built-in car and road segment | Enhanced live lane guidance | Can provide camera-assisted lane information, subject to vehicle and region limits |
| Walking in an unfamiliar neighborhood | Lens in Maps | Uses the phone camera to align directions with the real world |
Troubleshoot missing or unexpected guidance
The 3D option is missing
- Confirm that you are editing Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail, not the ordinary map-type menu.
- On Android, check that Maps is version 26.27 or newer and that you are in the United States on a supported device.
- On iPhone, check that the model is an iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 14 or newer and that the city supports the feature.
- Remember that support differs between the phone app, Android Auto and CarPlay.
3D appeared, then disappeared
Maps can switch to 2D for the remainder of the drive after overheating or a lost connection. Let the phone cool and restore connectivity; Google says 3D can return on the next drive once performance recovers.
Traffic or satellite disappeared
This is expected when 3D map details are enabled during navigation. Turn 3D off if those layers are more useful for your trip.
Voice directions are silent
- Check Settings > Navigation > Guidance volume.
- Raise the phone’s media volume and verify that the correct car audio source is selected.
- For CarPlay, adjust the vehicle’s volume while Maps is speaking.
- Confirm that Maps is allowed to use the device’s audio output.
Lane guidance or camera prompts do not appear
Enhanced live lane guidance is restricted to certain vehicles, countries and road sections and requires camera-extension access. Lens in Maps is an Android walking feature, not a driving lane tool. If the road, car or travel mode is outside those conditions, the missing prompt is an availability limitation rather than a setting you can force on.
Practical safety and reliability checks
- Set the destination and route before moving, and use a secure mount or the vehicle display for driving.
- Follow posted signs, signals and lane markings when they differ from the map.
- Use Lens in Maps briefly for orientation, then put the phone away while walking.
- Keep location permission enabled for navigation and review audio permissions before starting.
- Expect feature availability to vary by device, app version, city, country, vehicle, road segment and data plan.
Google Maps’ immersive controls are therefore best treated as optional layers over ordinary navigation. Start with the route and travel mode, enable the visual mode your device and trip support, and keep standard map, voice and real-world road information available as fallbacks.
