The shortest reliable workflow
Use this sequence whenever you need several related answers:

- Open AI Mode at
google.com/ai, select AI Mode below the Search bar, or choose the AI Mode entry in the Google app. - Write a complete first question. Include the subject, location, date, budget, audience and decision criteria that will matter in later turns.
- Wait for the answer, review its linked web sources, and then type the next question in the same Ask anything field.
- Refer to earlier material precisely, such as “the second option,” “the $1,000 limit from my original question,” or “the study you cited.”
- If the answer starts drifting, restate the subject and the one or two constraints that must not change.
- For a later session, open AI Mode history. Search history and personalization settings affect whether the earlier thread is available.
A new Google Search or a new AI Mode conversation does not have the same conversational anchor. Starting over can be useful when your goal has changed, but it is the main reason people have to repeat their original context.
What “keeping context” means in AI Mode
AI Mode is designed for complex questions that require several searches or refinements. Google describes it as carrying context from previous questions so it can refine your intent. In practice, that means a follow-up can depend on the topic, options, constraints and references established earlier in the same thread.

Context is not a guarantee that every detail will be applied correctly. A long conversation can contain several budgets, dates or meanings for a word. Pronouns such as “it” and “that one” become ambiguous when the thread has many branches. The safest approach is to keep the thread, but repeat a critical constraint when the relationship could be unclear.
Start a context-rich AI Mode thread
1. Open the correct AI Mode interface
You have three documented entry points:
- Go to
google.com/ai. - Run a Google Search and choose the AI Mode control below the Search bar.
- Open the Google app and select its AI Mode entry.
The exact placement and availability can vary by account, device and rollout. If you do not see the control, try the direct address or the Google app rather than assuming that follow-up questions are disabled.
2. Make the first question self-contained
The first prompt is the thread’s foundation. A vague opening such as “Which is best?” leaves AI Mode to guess the subject and the meaning of “best.” A useful opening identifies the decision you are making and the boundaries it must respect.

Include the details that you would otherwise have to repeat:
- Subject: name the product category, place, event, policy or technical problem.
- Location: specify country, state, city or service area when availability, law or pricing differs.
- Time frame: give a travel date, publication year, software version or “information current as of” date.
- Audience and skill level: say whether the answer is for a beginner, a child, a developer or a specialist.
- Constraints: state budget, size, compatibility, accessibility, operating system, deadline or other non-negotiables.
- Output: request a comparison, checklist, decision tree, explanation or short recommendation.
For example, ask: “I need a laptop for a college student in Canada, under CAD 1,000, with at least eight hours of practical battery life and Linux compatibility. Compare three current options and cite the manufacturer specifications.” A later request such as “Keep the same budget but prioritize repairability” has a stable reference point.

3. Continue in the same Ask anything field
After AI Mode answers, use the Ask anything field shown in that conversation. Do not open a fresh Search tab or start another AI Mode thread if you want the earlier assumptions carried forward. Your follow-up can narrow, challenge, transform or extend the original request.
Useful follow-up forms include:
- Narrow: “Which of those works for a 30-square-metre apartment?”
- Change one priority: “Keep the original budget, but prioritize battery life over screen size.”
- Ask for evidence: “Use the article you cited and tell me what changed after 2025.”
- Challenge an assumption: “What assumption in your last answer is least certain?”
- Change the format: “Turn that comparison into a three-step checklist for a beginner.”
These prompts work because they identify the relationship to the previous answer. “What about the second option?” may work immediately after a two-item list, but “Compare the second option with the first one for a small apartment, keeping the original budget” is safer after several turns.

4. Add context in another format when text is not enough
AI Mode can accept text, voice, images and files, depending on the available device and account experience. You can therefore ask a follow-up about a photograph, document or spoken description instead of transcribing every detail.
- Photo: attach an image and ask about visible features, damage or a label, then state what decision you need to make.
- File: provide a document and ask for a summary, an inconsistency check or a list of questions to investigate.
- Voice: dictate a follow-up when speaking is faster, but confirm names, numbers and units in the resulting text.
- Text: quote the exact passage or value when a small wording difference matters.
Input support is an availability feature, not a promise that every file or image will be interpreted perfectly. For a consequential decision, inspect the response and the linked sources rather than treating an uploaded item as verified evidence.
How to phrase follow-ups so the thread stays anchored
Use explicit references
Point to a numbered item, quoted phrase or named constraint. “Compare option B with option C” is clearer than “Compare those.” If the earlier answer used names rather than numbers, repeat the names. If a price, date or location is essential, include it again in the follow-up.

Change one variable at a time when comparing choices
If you alter budget, location, date and priorities in one sentence, AI Mode may not know which change caused a different result. First say what remains fixed, then identify the single change: “Keep the same three models and the same Canadian availability; rank them again with repairability as the top criterion.” Once that answer is clear, you can change another variable.
Ask AI Mode to expose uncertainty
A follow-up can test the reliability of the previous response instead of merely requesting more prose. Ask which statement is least certain, which facts depend on a date or region, and which source is primary. This is especially useful when the answer combines current prices, policies or product specifications that can change.
Continue an AI Mode search later
Use AI Mode history
Google says AI Mode history can help you reopen previous searches. In the Google Search or Google app experience, open the history area, locate the AI Mode conversation and select it to continue. The exact navigation label can change as Google updates the interface.
Check Search history and personalization settings
Google’s Help guidance says Search history and personalization settings provide the best experience for picking up where you left off. If either setting is disabled, paused or subject to an account policy, an earlier thread may not appear or may not be available with the same continuity. Review those settings before assuming that AI Mode lost the conversation.
These controls also affect what is retained in your account. Enable them only when their benefits fit your privacy and device-sharing needs. On a shared device, sign out or use the account controls appropriate to prevent another person from opening your history.

Know what later resumption cannot promise
History makes a prior thread recoverable; it does not freeze the web. A reopened conversation may encounter changed pages, new prices, revised policies or different availability. When you resume after a delay, ask AI Mode to recheck time-sensitive facts and to identify the dates of the sources it uses.
Why an answer can lose context and how to fix it

Use a controlled reset when the thread is too tangled
Sometimes preserving context is less useful than removing conflicting assumptions. Start a new conversation only after writing a compact brief containing the subject, the correct constraints, the decisions already made and the sources worth retaining. This gives AI Mode a clean starting point without making you reconstruct every turn.

Google states that AI Mode is experimental and may make mistakes. Treat a fluent response as a starting point, not as proof. The response may synthesize several pages, misread a qualification or carry an earlier assumption into a new question.
- Open the web links attached to the answer.
- Check the original publisher, publication date and last-updated date when shown.
- Confirm that the source actually supports the sentence AI Mode made from it.
- Check geography, edition, model year, units and eligibility conditions.
- Ask a follow-up that tests the weakest assumption, such as “What evidence would disprove this?”
- For legal, medical, financial, safety or other high-consequence decisions, consult the responsible primary authority or a qualified professional.
Source transparency is one of the key differences between a useful follow-up and an answer that merely sounds consistent. A thread can preserve the wrong premise very efficiently, so continuity and verification must be used together.

Availability, accounts and regional limits
Google documents AI Mode access through Search, the Google app and google.com/ai, but rollouts, account requirements and experiment names can change. The basic follow-up workflow is described as an AI Mode Search function. Some more agentic capabilities are limited to Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States; those subscriber features are separate from the basic ability to ask follow-up questions in a thread.
Do not infer access to a subscriber feature from seeing the AI Mode control. Your account, device, region and subscription can each affect which controls appear. If a guide describes a button you do not have, use the documented entry points above and check the options available in your own account rather than repeatedly refreshing.
Practical follow-up patterns
Planning with a fixed budget
First ask for options with a currency, location, date and must-have features. Then say, “Keep the original budget and location; remove any option that lacks the required feature.” A final follow-up can request a checklist of questions to ask a seller. This sequence changes the filter without silently changing the decision context.
Researching a changing policy
Ask AI Mode to explain the policy for a named jurisdiction and effective date. Follow with, “What changed after 2025, and which official source states the effective date?” Then open the cited source. If the answer cannot distinguish an announcement from an enforceable rule, treat that uncertainty as a reason to consult the responsible authority.
Working from a document or photo
Attach the file or image and describe the task: “List the deadlines visible in this notice and tell me which ones require an appointment.” Follow with, “Quote the line supporting each deadline and identify anything unreadable.” Asking for quotations and uncertainty prevents the conversation from turning an unclear scan into a confident claim.
Turning a long answer into action
After reviewing the explanation, ask: “Turn the recommended approach into three steps for a beginner, including the exact setting or command for each step.” If a step depends on a version, operating system or region, restate that detail so the checklist remains executable.
A pre-send checklist
- Am I still in the original AI Mode conversation?
- Did I identify the earlier item by name, number or quotation?
- Are the budget, date, location and units explicit?
- Did I say what should stay fixed and what should change?
- Would a photo, file or voice input provide information text cannot?
- Have I asked for the source date or the least-certain assumption when the claim matters?
- If I am returning later, are Search history and personalization configured for the continuity I want?
Bottom line
Keep related questions in one AI Mode thread and use the Ask anything field. Start with a complete, constraint-rich question; make later references explicit; attach text, voice, images or files when they add useful evidence; and use AI Mode history to resume when your settings allow it. Because AI Mode is experimental, verify important conclusions against the linked original sources, their dates and the assumptions that connect them.
