On Android, open Gemini over the app or webpage showing the item, then use Ask about… or type a focused question about what is visible. Gemini can read screen context, help identify a product, and—when shopping features are available—show product details, reviews, buying options and comparison links. It does not guarantee an exact model match or the lowest current price, so verify the variant, merchant, delivery costs and final price before buying.
The most reliable workflow separates two jobs: first use the overlay to extract the product’s brand, model or label; then ask Gemini’s shopping experience to compare that exact product or competing models.

What Gemini’s screen overlay can and cannot do
Gemini’s Android overlay opens on top of another app, video or file so you can ask about visible content without navigating away. Google says Gemini may use what is on the screen and may offer a suggestion to ask about it. The feature and its controls can vary by device configuration; Google’s mobile instructions are available in Get started with the Gemini mobile app.

Product discovery and price comparison are a separate shopping capability. Google describes that capability as using its Shopping Graph to return product groupings, product cards, details, reviews, buying options and direct links. Availability depends on your account, location, merchant and the type of product, as documented in Get help with your shopping in Gemini Apps.

Neither capability should be treated as proof that Gemini identified the exact item in a photograph, checked every retailer or found the lowest price. A visually similar product, different storage size, regional model or bundle can produce a misleading comparison.
Before you start on Android
- Use the Gemini mobile app on an Android device with Gemini available. The activation method may be voice, such as “Hey Google,” or touch, such as a long press of the power button.
- Open Gemini settings and check the screen-context controls. Google refers to Use text from screen and Use screenshot; turn on the control relevant to the information you want Gemini to read.
- Sign in with the Google Account you intend to use. Shopping assistance has additional account and age requirements described below.
- Keep the product page, image, video frame or document visible. A sharp image with readable text gives Gemini more to work with than a small thumbnail or moving scene.
Menu names and the hardware gesture can differ between Android devices. If a power-button long press opens another assistant, use the device’s configured Gemini gesture or voice activation instead.
Open the overlay without leaving the product page
- Navigate to the product image, listing, video frame or file you want to inspect.
- Activate Gemini with “Hey Google,” the configured touch gesture, or a long press of the power button where that gesture is enabled.
- Wait for the overlay and look for an available screen suggestion such as Ask about…. Suggestions appear only in some apps, videos or files.
- Tap the suggestion or type your own question in the Gemini field.
- Read the answer while the original app remains underneath. Return to the page to inspect the source listing or open a link Gemini provides.
Google explains that screen actions use information from the screen or file as context in Use screen actions to chat with the Gemini mobile app. Tapping a screen-action suggestion uploads the relevant on-screen information or file for context. All screen actions except Ask about… automatically submit screen content when tapped, so review the wording of the action before selecting it if you do not want an automatic submission.

Start with extraction rather than a broad shopping request. The following prompts are practical starting points; treat the answers as leads to verify, not as a visual-authentication certificate.
Read the name and model
- “What brand and model is this?”
- “Read the label and identify the exact model number.”
- “List every visible number, letter and certification mark on the package.”
Resolve ambiguity
- “Which details in this image distinguish this generation from the previous one?”
- “What information is missing to identify the exact size, storage capacity or regional variant?”
- “Give me two possible matches and explain which visible feature supports each one.”
Turn the result into a search-ready description
- “Write a concise search query containing the brand, model number, size and color shown here.”
- “Separate facts you can read from the image from details you are inferring.”
If the frame is blurry, ask Gemini to transcribe only the visible text or describe distinguishing features. Compare that text with the manufacturer’s or merchant’s listing before treating a model number as confirmed.

Use Gemini to compare products and prices
Once you have an exact model—or a short list of plausible models—ask a focused comparison question. Google’s own example is: Compare the [Product A] headphones with the [Product B] headphones.
You can adapt it to the item on your screen:
- “Compare [exact model] with [competing model] for battery life, weight, warranty and current price.”
- “Show buying options for [exact model] and identify the merchant, currency and listed price for each.”
- “Compare the 128 GB and 256 GB versions of [exact model], including the price difference.”
- “Which of these two models matches the features visible in my screenshot?”
Shopping results may include visually rich product results, grouped products, direct links and product cards. A card can provide additional details, reviews and buying options, and you can ask follow-up questions about specifications, prices or where to buy. The overlay itself does not promise a complete, synchronized comparison of every store. If Gemini identifies an item from your screen but the shopping answer is vague, copy the exact model number into a new prompt in the Gemini mobile app, Gemini web app or Gemini in Chrome. Keep the identification step and the shopping step conceptually separate so an uncertain visual match does not silently become a purchase recommendation.
Verify every offer before you buy
Gemini can assemble useful options, but the merchant page is the final authority for what you will actually receive and pay. Check each result against the following list:
- Exact identity: brand, model, generation, size, storage, color, connectivity and bundle contents.
- Price: displayed amount, currency, tax treatment and whether the figure is a sale, member price or other condition.
- Merchant: the seller named on the product card and the seller on the destination page. Shopping results are limited to eligible merchants.
- Availability: in-stock status, back-order wording and any regional purchase restriction.
- Delivery: shipping charge, estimated arrival, delivery area and any special handling requirement.
- Returns and warranty: who provides the return policy and warranty, and whether the terms apply to the exact variant.
- Reviews and descriptions: confirm that the reviews and specifications refer to the same size, generation and bundle rather than a parent product with multiple variants.
Price information can change after Gemini generates an answer. Open the merchant link, select the same variant and proceed far enough to see the current total before deciding.

Eligibility and regional limits for shopping help
Google’s shopping documentation lists conditions that are easy to miss:

If you do not see product cards or buying options, the cause may be account age, account type, disabled activity, location, merchant coverage or the product category—not a problem with your screen image. The same answer may also differ between the mobile app, web app and Chrome.
Understand what happens to screen content
Screen actions are designed to pass screen or file information as context. Google’s wording distinguishes Ask about… from other actions: other screen actions automatically submit the content when tapped, while Ask about… lets you ask about the screen. This matters when the visible page contains personal messages, account details, order numbers or payment information.
- Close or hide sensitive information before invoking a screen action.
- Crop or navigate to the product area instead of exposing an entire account page.
- Review the action label and prompt before sending.
- After the answer, return to the source page and confirm any model or price details yourself.
Screen context settings are controlled from Gemini settings, and Google’s labels can change as the Android app is updated. If the overlay cannot see text that is clearly visible, revisit the Use text from screen and Use screenshot controls and try again with a still image.
Desktop method: select part of a webpage in Gemini in Chrome
On a supported Chromebook Plus, Mac or Windows computer, Gemini in Chrome offers a different workflow. It attaches a selected portion of a webpage to your prompt rather than opening the Android overlay. Google documents this for supported countries and users aged 13 or older in Share specific parts of your screen with Gemini in Chrome.

- Open the webpage containing the product image or listing in Chrome.
- Open Ask Gemini.
- Choose Add, then Select from screen.
- Draw selection boxes around the relevant product image, text or comparison rows.
- Adjust or remove a selection if it includes unrelated information.
- Enter a question such as “Identify the model number in this selection and compare it with [competitor].”
Use this route when the important evidence is on a desktop page and you need to select several separate areas. It is not the same feature as the Android screen overlay, and its country, age and device support are separate from Android availability.

Circle to Search is a Google Search feature, not a Gemini overlay feature. On select Android phones, including Pixel 6 and later, hold the Home button or navigation handle, then circle, highlight, scribble over or tap the on-screen item. Search opens without requiring you to switch apps. Google’s instructions are at Search your screen with Circle to Search.
Use Circle to Search when your main goal is a quick visual search. Use Gemini’s overlay when you want to ask follow-up questions, extract text or continue a conversational comparison. Availability depends on the phone and software configuration, so the presence of one feature does not prove that the other is enabled.
Troubleshooting common results
Gemini does not offer a screen suggestion
Suggestions appear only over some apps, videos and files. Activate Gemini manually, check the screen-context controls, and ask a typed question. If the app blocks screen sharing or the content is protected, move to a static product page or use a screenshot that contains only the relevant item.

Ask for the visible model number, request a transcription of label text, and provide the distinguishing feature that separates variants. Ask Gemini to list uncertainty rather than selecting one answer from a blurry image.

No shopping cards or buying links appear
Check the personal-account, age and Keep Activity requirements, then confirm that shopping is available in your country and for the product category. Try the Gemini mobile app, web app or Chrome if one surface does not show shopping results.
Prices disagree between results
Normalize the comparison: use the same currency, variant, bundle and seller type, then include shipping, tax and delivery timing. Open each merchant page because Gemini’s displayed price may have changed or may represent a conditional offer.
The answer names the wrong item
Do not continue the comparison with the uncertain identification. Ask for two or more candidate models, compare visible markings with the manufacturer or merchant listing, and restart the shopping query using the confirmed model number.
A repeatable checklist
- Freeze the clearest product image or page.
- Open Gemini over it and verify screen-context settings.
- Use Ask about… or a typed prompt to extract brand, model and visible text.
- Separate observed text from Gemini’s inferences.
- Confirm the exact variant on a product listing.
- Ask Gemini for product cards, buying options or a side-by-side comparison using the confirmed names.
- Check merchant, currency, tax, shipping, delivery, returns, warranty and stock.
- Open the merchant page and verify the final total immediately before purchase.
This process keeps a convenient on-screen lookup from becoming an unverified purchase decision.
