Gemini Apps can use public information from Google Maps to answer questions about places, directions, and estimated journey times. Sign in, keep Gemini Apps Activity on, then ask a specific question. For live traffic and controls while you are driving, use Gemini inside the Google Maps app instead: it is a separate feature.
What Gemini’s Map tool can do
In Gemini Apps, you can ask conversational questions about nearby businesses and attractions, request directions by travel mode, or ask how long a trip might take. For example, Google documents questions such as “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” and “How long is the drive from Atlanta to Orlando”. Answers draw on public Google Maps information; they are not a substitute for live navigation.

You can also ask about a place’s details. Depending on what is available, its linked place name may lead to a details page with directions, a restaurant menu, a website or social page, or a phone number.

- Sign in to Gemini Apps and turn on Keep Activity. Google says the Maps feature is unavailable when Keep Activity is off, in Live chats, and in Gemini in Google Messages. Google’s help page notes, “For now, this feature isn’t available in Live chats.” Google Gemini Apps Help.
- Gemini may use your saved Work or Home location. It may also use your device location if you grant permission. It does not use other saved Google Maps places for this feature, and it does not save location history through the Maps connection. Google Gemini Apps Help.
- Google describes expanded place details and interactive maps as gradually rolling out. Its iPhone and iPad help page lists eligibility as age 18 or older, a personal Google Account, and a place query in English; access may vary. Google Gemini Apps Help for iPhone and iPad.
Ask Gemini to find a place or get directions
- Open Gemini Apps. On a computer, go to gemini.google.com. On a phone or tablet, use the Gemini app or visit gemini.google.com.
- State what you need. Ask for a kind of place, a route, or a travel-time estimate. Include a starting point and destination for a route question, and name the travel mode when it matters.
- Add useful constraints. Specify criteria such as distance, venue type, or avoiding tolls. Google documents requests for directions by travel mode and routes that avoid tolls.
- Open a place result if you need more detail. Select its linked name to see the available place details. On supported mobile experiences, tap a place preview or map pin to open an interactive map.

- “Find me a park with a playground that’s within a 10 min drive from where I am now.”
For a time estimate, Google also gives this example: “How long does it take to walk from Buckingham Palace to Big Ben in London?”
Use the mobile map and save places to Google Maps
On mobile, some users can open an interactive map from a place preview or map pin. Google also documents an option to export all pinned places to a custom Google Maps list. These features are part of a gradual rollout, so they may not appear for every account or query. Gemini Apps or Gemini in Google Maps?
Choose the surface based on whether you are planning or already navigating. Gemini Apps is for conversational discovery and route questions; Gemini inside the Google Maps app is designed for questions and controls during navigation.

How to interpret directions and travel times
Treat a Gemini Apps travel-time answer as an estimate, not a live traffic update. For current route conditions and active navigation, use Google Maps. The Maps navigation experience and Gemini Apps are distinct: asking Gemini Apps for a drive duration does not give you the navigation controls or live route context documented for Gemini in Google Maps.
