In Android Police, writer Akshay Bhalla described photographing his collection in batches and using Gemini to list visible titles and platform details. He said he had more than 400 physical games and used the method to avoid subscribing to a dedicated cataloging app.
What the Gemini game-scanning workflow does
The process is simple: photograph readable game cases, ask Gemini to transcribe visible information into a consistent table, review the results, and move the corrected list into a spreadsheet. Bhalla reported working with batches of roughly 20 to 40 games rather than trying to capture his entire collection in one image. That is a practical starting point, not a proven optimum or a promise of a particular accuracy rate.

His collection was stored in containers to manage space. A bin can make it easier to group cases for a photo session, but the method needs no special hardware.

Recognition depends on what the image actually shows. Glare, overlapping spines, small lettering, and damaged cases can make titles or platform labels hard to read—and an AI response may still look confident when it is wrong.

- Arrange cases so each spine is visible; separate overlapping titles.
- Keep batches manageable, with enough space in the frame to distinguish one case from another.
- For a damaged or ambiguous case, take a closer photo or another angle instead of relying on a guess.
Ask Gemini for a consistent inventory table
Upload the photos in a Gemini prompt and ask it to focus on visible text. Google says images can be uploaded directly to Gemini prompts without connecting a gallery app. Google’s instructions for adding files to Gemini explain the upload workflow.

Identify the games visible in these photos. Focus only on readable text. Return a Markdown table with columns for Game Title, Platform/System, and Developer/Publisher if visible. Do not guess unclear text: mark it as uncertain so I can check the case.

The request to mark unclear text rather than guess is a useful safeguard; it is an added instruction, not a claim that Gemini will always flag uncertainty correctly. Review each row against the case, especially titles that look similar and platform labels that are partly hidden.

Review the table, then move it into a spreadsheet
- Check the rows against the photos. Correct misspellings, mismatched platform names, and any details that Gemini inferred rather than read.
- Resolve uncertain entries. Retake a close-up or consult the case directly; leave a field blank or mark it for later if the text cannot be established.
- Combine batches carefully. Append each reviewed batch to one master list and look for duplicate entries before treating the inventory as complete.
- Transfer the cleaned data. Copy the table into Google Sheets or another spreadsheet and adjust columns as needed. Bhalla reported using the output in a CSV-ready list for Google Sheets; check the pasted columns before relying on the sheet.
Keep the original photos until the rows are checked. They provide a reference when you later question a title or platform entry.

This approach is best understood as a way to reduce repetitive typing. It does not establish that every game has been identified, that a catalog is complete, or that platform-specific details and duplicates are handled as reliably as they would be in a purpose-built database. A spreadsheet also puts maintenance and backup decisions in your hands.

Bhalla reported that the workflow helped him inventory more than 400 games and that the task took about an hour. Those are personal results, not independent performance measurements or a general time-saving estimate. He also said he used a Google AI Plus subscription, so the process should not be described as necessarily free.
In the same account, Bhalla said he encountered a nine-game limit on Cibby’s free tier and chose not to subscribe. That is his report at publication, not confirmation of the service’s current limit or pricing. Google’s connected-gallery features are separate from uploading photos directly: gallery connections have their own requirements, including a personal Google Account and Keep activity enabled, and availability can vary by product and context. Google’s connected-apps help page describes those requirements.
