On a compatible Android phone or tablet, open the Gemini app, tap Live at the bottom (or swipe left), accept any first-use prompts, and start speaking. You can also say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk” after enabling Hey Google and Voice Match.

Live can continue while you use other apps, and an existing session can continue with the screen locked when the required notification and lock-screen settings are enabled. You cannot start Gemini Live from a locked screen; unlock the device first.

What Gemini Live does

Gemini Live is Google’s spoken, back-and-forth conversation mode in the Gemini mobile app. Instead of typing each prompt, you talk naturally and can interrupt, pause, resume, or end the exchange with on-screen controls. The practical workflow has three contexts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • In the Gemini app: start a new Live conversation by tapping the Live control or swiping left.
  • Hands-free on an unlocked device: use a Hey Google phrase after Hey Google and Voice Match are configured.
  • While multitasking or with the screen locked: continue an already-started Live session after enabling Gemini Live notifications and, for lock-screen continuation, Gemini on lock screen.

These contexts are not interchangeable. A locked phone cannot initiate Live, even though an active conversation may continue there. Google also treats ordinary lock-screen Gemini requests separately from Live, with some answers and actions available without unlocking and personal content still protected behind the lock screen. See Google’s explanation of lock-screen behavior at How your Gemini mobile app can help when your phone is locked.

Device and app requirements

Install the Gemini mobile app and the latest Google app, then sign in with an account eligible for Gemini Apps. Google lists Android 9 or later and at least 2 GB of RAM as the Android app minimum. Android Go devices are not supported. These are product requirements, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every country or account.

Review Google’s current device and regional list at Gemini mobile app availability – Android. Location, account type, language, and staged rollouts can affect whether Live appears.

Account, language, and supervision limits

Hey Google and Voice Match are unavailable for supervised accounts, and Google maintains a list of languages in which those voice features cannot be used. Gemini Live itself is also subject to language and rollout limits; Google currently says Farsi is not supported in the Gemini mobile app. If Live is missing despite meeting the Android minimum, check the signed-in account, app updates, and the availability page rather than assuming the phone is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where Live is available

Live is a mobile-app feature. Google says it is not currently available in the Gemini web app or Google Messages, and Gems cannot be used with Live. Availability can change as Google expands the feature, so the controls shown on your device are the authoritative indication for your account.

  • Go live with Gemini, your Google AI assistant; brainstorm ideas, make grocery lists, and schedule events, just by using your voice – with advanced audio processing, you can have clear conversations, even in noisy environments[2,11]

Start Gemini Live from the app

  1. Open the Gemini app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, tap Live. If the button is not visible, swipe left in the Gemini interface to reach it.
  3. Follow any first-use prompts, including microphone access or the introductory screen.
  4. When the Live conversation opens, speak normally. Wait for Gemini to respond, then continue talking without creating a separate typed prompt.

If the app asks for microphone permission, allow it if you want spoken conversation. Denying that permission prevents Live from hearing you; you can change it later in Android’s app-permission settings.

End or pause the microphone

Use Hold when you want to pause the microphone without ending the conversation. Use End to close the Live session. Treat the microphone as active whenever you have not intentionally placed the session on hold, particularly in a shared room.

Use Hey Google for hands-free launch

On an unlocked Android device, Hey Google can start a Gemini chat without touching the screen. Google documents both “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” and the shorter “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Google also states that a Live chat can be started on Pixel Buds by saying “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Pixel Buds are optional; the help instructions do not establish compatibility for particular generations.

Enable Hey Google and Voice Match

  1. Open Gemini and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Choose Manage your Google account.
  3. Open Data & privacy.
  4. Find the Voice Match settings and turn on Hey Google and Voice Match, completing the voice-training prompts if Google presents them.
  5. Return to Gemini and test the phrase while the phone is unlocked.

Google’s feature and account notes are in What you can do with your Gemini mobile app – Android phone & tablet and the Live instructions at Talk naturally with Gemini Live – Android phone & tablet.

  • Pair the Pixel Buds A-Series with your Pixel or any Android device in just one tap[3]; or quickly and easily connect to iOS or any other Bluetooth 4.0 plus device[4].

What “hands-free” means here

Hands-free refers to launching or speaking without tapping while the phone is unlocked. It does not mean Live can be launched from a locked screen. A locked phone may respond to some Hey Google requests, but Google says you may need to unlock it to receive a response, and Live itself requires an unlocked start.

Keep talking while using another app

To move an active Live conversation out of the Gemini app, first turn on Gemini Live notifications. Google requires those notifications for background conversation.

  1. Open Android Settings and enable notifications for Gemini Live (the exact menu wording can vary by Android version).
  2. Start Live in Gemini using the app or an unlocked Hey Google phrase.
  3. Swipe up from the bottom edge to go to the Home screen or another app. This sends Live to the background rather than ending it.
  4. To return, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Live with Gemini notification card.

If the card does not appear, notification permission is the first thing to check. Battery-saving or notification-management settings from the phone manufacturer can also suppress background controls; allow Gemini notifications and remove any restriction that prevents the app from running in the background.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s procedural requirement is stated on the Live help page: “To talk to Gemini in the background, you must turn on notifications for Gemini Live on your device.”

Continue an existing Live session when the phone is locked

Lock-screen continuation is a permissioned extension of an existing conversation, not a way to start one. Enable both required settings before locking the phone:

  1. Turn on Live with Gemini notifications.
  2. Turn on Gemini on lock screen in Gemini’s lock-screen settings.
  3. Start Live while the phone is unlocked.
  4. Press the power button or otherwise lock the screen. The active session can continue if the notification and lock-screen permissions remain enabled.
  5. To interact again after a hold or an ended session, unlock the phone. Google says you must unlock to start Live, and you may need to unlock again if a chat is held or ends while locked.

The lock screen does not grant unrestricted access to personal information. Google permits selected general answers and actions without unlocking, while personal content may still require authentication. Calls and messages use a separate setting and require your explicit opt-in; do not assume that enabling Gemini on lock screen enables those actions.

Locked-screen limitations at a glance

Task Unlocked phone Locked phone
Start a new Gemini Live session Yes, from the app or supported Hey Google phrase No; unlock first
Continue an already-started Live session Yes Yes, when Gemini on lock screen and Live notifications are enabled
Receive every type of personal answer Subject to account permissions Some personal content still requires unlocking
Resume after Live is held or ends while locked Not applicable Unlock the phone to continue

Screen sharing and camera behavior

Live can use screen or camera context when those controls are available, but locking or leaving the app changes what is shared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Screen sharing: requires Gemini Live notifications. Locking the screen or putting Live on hold stops screen sharing; it does not automatically resume when you return.
  • Camera sharing: turns off when the screen locks, when you leave the Gemini app, or when Live is put on hold.
  • Returning to the app: check the sharing control before continuing. Assume no visual context is being sent until the indicator and preview show that sharing is active again.

These rules prevent an unlocked, foreground visual session from silently remaining active after the phone state changes. They also mean that a background voice conversation is not equivalent to continuous camera or screen monitoring.

Use Connected Apps in Live where supported

Some Connected Apps support in Live is being released gradually. Google currently limits Live Connected Apps for work or school accounts to Calendar, Keep, and Tasks. Personal accounts may see a different set as rollout continues.

Because availability is account- and rollout-dependent, check the Connected Apps controls shown in Gemini rather than relying on a list from another device. A missing app can indicate that the feature has not reached your account, that the account is managed by an organization, or that the app is not supported in Live yet. Google’s current notes are on the Live help page at Talk naturally with Gemini Live – Android phone & tablet.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

There is no Live button

  • Update the Gemini app and the Google app.
  • Confirm that the device runs Android 9 or later with at least 2 GB of RAM and is not Android Go.
  • Check that you are signed in to an eligible Gemini Apps account.
  • Review country, language, and rollout availability. Farsi, for example, is currently not supported in the Gemini mobile app.
  • Try swiping left in Gemini; the control may be off the initial bottom view.

“Hey Google” does not start a conversation

  • Test while the phone is unlocked; locked-screen behavior is more limited.
  • Confirm Hey Google and Voice Match in the Gemini profile path: Manage your Google account → Data & privacy → Voice Match.
  • Check whether the account is supervised or uses a language unavailable for these voice features.
  • Use the full phrase “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” if the shorter phrase is not recognized.

Live stops when you open another app

  • Enable Live with Gemini notifications.
  • After starting Live, swipe up from the bottom edge rather than ending the conversation.
  • Return through the notification shade by tapping the Live with Gemini card.
  • If notifications are enabled but still absent, review Android’s battery and background restrictions for Gemini.

Live will not continue on the lock screen

  • Start the session before locking; a locked phone cannot create a new Live session.
  • Enable both Gemini on lock screen and Live with Gemini notifications.
  • Unlock if the conversation was held or ended while the phone was locked.
  • Remember that screen and camera sharing stop when the screen locks, even if voice conversation continues.

The microphone or camera does not work

  • Check Android permissions for Gemini and ensure the microphone is not muted with Hold.
  • For visual features, verify that the relevant sharing control is active after returning from the background.
  • Keep in mind that camera sharing is intentionally disabled when the screen locks, when you leave Gemini, or when Live is held.

Privacy and etiquette during spoken chats

A Live conversation can pick up people and information around you. Google advises respecting others’ privacy and asking permission before recording or including someone else in a Live chat. Use Hold before discussing something private near an active microphone, and use End when the conversation is finished rather than leaving an unattended session open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lock-screen continuation should be configured with the same care. Anyone who can hear the phone may hear Gemini’s responses, and selected lock-screen actions are available without full device authentication. Keep Gemini on lock screen disabled if that exposure is unacceptable in your environment.

Choose the right launch method

Situation Best method What must be enabled
You are holding the phone and want to see the conversation Open Gemini and tap Live, or swipe left to Live Gemini app, eligible account, microphone permission
You need a touch-free start on an unlocked phone Say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk” Hey Google and Voice Match
You want to talk while reading or using another app Start Live, then swipe up and return through the notification card Live with Gemini notifications
You want an existing conversation to continue after locking Start while unlocked, then lock the phone Gemini on lock screen and Live with Gemini notifications
You need camera or screen context Use the sharing control in the foreground Live session Live notifications for screen sharing; keep the screen unlocked for visual sharing

Key points to remember

  • Tap Live in Gemini or swipe left to start from the app.
  • Hey Google and Voice Match provide hands-free voice access on an unlocked device, subject to account and language eligibility.
  • Notifications are required for background Live conversations.
  • Gemini on lock screen lets an existing Live session continue after locking, but it cannot launch Live from the lock screen.
  • Locking, leaving the app, or holding Live stops camera sharing; screen sharing also stops when locked or held and does not resume automatically.
  • Availability varies by Android version, RAM, country, account, language, and staged rollout.
