That change affects automatic sharing in new chats. It does not remove a tab that an existing conversation already lists as shared, erase previous activity, or disable every form of Gemini data processing. Check the shared-tabs control above the chat box and remove any tab you do not want to provide.

What you need to change
Gemini in Chrome is designed to answer questions about the page you have open. According to Google Chrome Help, the current tab is shared by default when Gemini in Chrome opens or a new chat starts. The practical privacy control is therefore a two-part routine:
- Disable Share current tab by default in Chrome’s Gemini permissions.
- Review the tabs already attached to each chat and remove anything that should not be available.
With the default disabled, Gemini can still receive a tab when you deliberately add it. This is a control over when page context is sent, not a promise that Chrome, Google or Gemini stops processing all other information.

How do I stop Gemini from seeing my current tab?
1. Open Gemini in Chrome’s permissions
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select More (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Open AI innovations.
- Select Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Permissions, find Share current tab by default.
You can open the same area directly by entering chrome://settings/ai/gemini in the address bar. If the menu or page is absent, the feature may not be enabled for your Chrome version, account, region or managed-device policy. Google’s Gemini in Chrome overview describes availability and feature eligibility, which can change as the rollout changes.
2. Turn off automatic sharing
Switch Share current tab by default off. The setting changes what happens when a new Gemini chat begins: the current page is no longer attached automatically. It does not retroactively withdraw a tab from a conversation that already contains it.
3. Confirm the state in a new chat
Start a new Gemini chat after changing the setting. Look above the text box for the shared-tabs indicator. The current tab should not appear there unless you explicitly added it. A glowing underline under the tab is an additional visual indication that the tab is being shared; when you remove the tab, that underline disappears, as described in Chrome Help.

Changing the default is not enough if a tab was attached before you changed the permission. Each conversation has its own shared-tab list.
Inspect the shared-tabs control
- Open the Gemini chat you intend to use.
- Locate the shared-tabs control above the text box.
- Read the list of tabs attached to that conversation.
- Identify pages that contain private messages, account details, customer information, internal documents or anything else you do not want Gemini to process.
Remove an unwanted tab
Use the control next to the tab and choose the remove option. You can also remove the current tab from this list. Removing it stops that tab from being available as context for subsequent prompts in that chat; it does not rewrite messages that Gemini already generated while the tab was attached.

Repeat the check whenever you reopen an older conversation. A setting changed today does not alter the tab list saved with an earlier conversation.
How to avoid sharing tabs accidentally
Do not use Add tabs unless you intend to send page content
Gemini in Chrome includes an Add tabs control. Selecting it lets you choose open tabs to provide as context. Leave that control unused when your goal is to keep browsing content out of the conversation.

Be careful with the at-tab picker
Typing @ to select a tab is another explicit sharing action. It is useful when you want Gemini to compare or summarize pages, but it sends the selected tab’s context to the chat. Do not use the picker for a prompt that is meant to contain only your typed question.
Remember that related tabs can be included
Google says a user can share up to 10 open tabs in a chat. Tabs opened from a chat or from a shared tab can also become shared. A conversation that starts with one page can therefore gain additional page context as you work through links. Check the list again after opening pages from the conversation.
What information does Gemini receive from a shared tab?
Sharing is not limited to a screenshot of what is visible on your monitor. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, says Gemini in Chrome processes the page content and URL from the current tab and any other tabs you share.

- Page content: text and other content from the webpage can be supplied as context for a response.
- URL: the address of the page is included with the shared context.
- Content outside the visible area: Google notes that some page content Gemini uses might not be visible to you.
- Additional browsing context: if you ask Gemini to find pages you visited in Chrome, relevant URLs from browsing history may also be collected.
Because page content can include information below the fold or otherwise not obvious in the current view, treat a shared tab as handing over the webpage’s available content, not merely showing Gemini an image of your screen.
Default sharing on, default sharing off and per-chat removal

The second and third rows solve different problems. The default setting controls future automatic behavior; removal controls the current conversation’s attached context.
Does turning off tab sharing stop Gemini activity or erase history?
No. The toggle controls automatic current-tab sharing. It does not establish that all Google or Chrome data processing stops, and it does not itself delete past Gemini activity.
Keep Activity and storage
The Privacy Hub says information from websites visited with Gemini in Chrome, along with audio and files shared with Gemini, is stored in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is on. Page content is temporarily logged to the Google Account but does not appear on the Gemini Apps Activity page.
These are separate concepts: a page may be processed to answer a prompt, while the page-content log is handled differently from the activity list you can view. Turning off automatic tab sharing prevents a new chat from receiving the current tab by default; it is not a universal deletion command.

Broader Gemini Apps terms
Google’s broader Gemini Apps notice says chats and shared content may be used to provide, develop and improve services when Keep Activity is on, including possible human review. The notice says some reviewed material can be retained for up to three years. That duration applies to certain material under the broader Gemini Apps activity terms; it is not a universal three-year retention period for every page-content item processed by Gemini in Chrome.
What personal information should you keep out of a shared tab?
Before allowing a tab into a chat, consider what the page contains beyond the question you want to ask. A page can combine visible text with account state, links, identifiers or embedded material.
- Private email, direct messages or support tickets.
- Banking, shopping or health-account details.
- Work dashboards, customer records or internal documentation.
- Unpublished writing, source code, contracts or security reports.
- Pages containing passwords, recovery codes or API credentials.
- Personal URLs whose path includes an identifier or token.
If you need help with a public article, copy only the relevant text into a new prompt instead of sharing a logged-in page. Remove account-specific details first. This approach does not change Gemini’s controls, but it reduces the amount of sensitive context you place in the conversation.
How to use Gemini for a page while retaining control
- Keep Share current tab by default off.
- Open a new chat for the specific task.
- Check that no tab appears in the shared-tabs list.
- Ask a question that does not require page context, or paste a carefully selected, redacted excerpt.
- If page context is necessary, use Add tabs to select only the intended page.
- Before sending the prompt, re-open the shared-tabs list and verify the selected tab and URL.
- When finished, remove the tab from the chat if you do not want it available to later prompts in that conversation.
This workflow preserves the convenience of explicit page questions without making every new chat a handoff of the page you happen to be viewing.

The toggle is off, but the current tab is still listed
The tab was probably attached before you changed the default. Open the shared-tabs control and remove it manually. The default switch does not clean up existing conversations.

The glowing underline remains
The underline indicates that the tab is still shared. Use the shared-tabs control to remove the tab, then confirm that the underline disappears. If it persists, close and reopen the chat after verifying that Chrome is using the intended profile.
Gemini asks for a tab when you did not add one
Check whether you are continuing an older conversation whose tab list already contains the page. Create a new chat and inspect its shared-tabs list before typing. Also check that you did not select a tab with @ or the Add tabs control.
The Gemini in Chrome settings page is unavailable
Feature availability can depend on Chrome’s release, account, location and organizational policy. Update Chrome through its normal settings if updates are offered, then revisit chrome://settings/ai/gemini. On a work or school device, an administrator may control whether the feature is available or how it behaves.
A prompt refers to pages visited earlier
Gemini can be asked to find pages visited in Chrome, and the Privacy Hub says relevant browsing-history URLs may then be collected. Do not use that request when you need to keep browsing history out of the interaction. Asking Gemini not to use a tab does not substitute for removing the tab from the shared list.
Work and school accounts have different protections
Managed Workspace accounts are governed by edition-specific terms and administrator settings. Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education documentation says that, under qualifying Workspace terms, prompts and current-tab context supplied with user consent are used to generate responses and are not used to train generative AI models. It also says existing data-protection controls apply.
The same documentation describes Auto Browse as off by default for managed users and says administrators can govern it with policy. These statements apply to qualifying managed editions and accounts; do not assume a personal Google Account receives the same contractual protections. If you use a company or school profile, ask the administrator which Workspace edition and policies apply before sharing confidential pages.
What this setting does not cover
- It does not control every third-party AI extension installed in Chrome.
- It does not describe the separate Gemini website or other Google products.
- It does not remove a tab already attached to an existing chat.
- It does not delete prior chats or activity by itself.
- It does not guarantee that a webpage contains no hidden or non-visible content that Gemini could process when you share it.
The instructions here are specifically for Gemini in Chrome. Other assistants can use different permission names and data paths, so do not assume this Chrome toggle governs them.

chrome://settings/ai/gemini. - Inspect the shared-tabs list before every sensitive chat.
- Remove tabs that were attached earlier.
- Avoid Add tabs and
@tab selection unless you intend to share the selected page. - Remember that up to 10 open tabs can be shared and that tabs opened from a shared tab may also be shared.
- Do not treat the toggle as a deletion tool or as a guarantee that all Gemini processing has stopped.
- For a work or school account, confirm your administrator’s Workspace edition and policies.
