To get useful records, set your sleep schedule in Garmin Connect, wear the watch overnight with optical heart rate active, and sync it in the morning. Treat the score and stage labels as estimates from wearable sensors—not clinical findings.
Set up sleep tracking on the Venu X1
- Set your sleep and wake times: Enter your usual schedule in Garmin Connect. The recorded sleep window depends in part on having the correct schedule.
- Wear the watch before bed: Garmin advises wearing a compatible optical-heart-rate watch for at least two hours before bedtime.
- Keep optical heart rate active overnight: The watch needs its optical sensor data to record sleep statistics.
- Choose the right watch if you wear more than one: Garmin says to wear the device designated as your Primary Wearable to bed.
- Sync in the morning: After syncing, review the available sleep statistics in Garmin Connect. Look for the Sleep or Sleep Score view; exact app labels and routes can vary by version. A sleep glance may also be available on the watch.
Garmin identifies the Venu X1 as supporting Sleep Score and Insights, Sleep Coach, and Sleep Alignment. Which individual metrics appear can vary by device and configuration.

What the sleep metrics tell you
Duration, bedtime, and wake time
Sleep duration and the recorded bedtime and wake time help answer the basic question: how long did the watch register you as sleeping? Check that the recorded window matches your night before interpreting the score or comparing nights.
Awake and restless moments
Garmin may show periods marked awake or restless. These are useful context for continuity, but they are sensor-based indications—not a complete account of every time you woke or moved.

Sleep Score and Insights
Garmin’s Sleep Score is a device-generated rating on a 0–100 scale. Garmin’s published bands are:
| Score | Garmin label |
|---|---|
| 90–100 | Excellent |
| 80–89 | Good |
| 60–79 | Fair |
| Below 60 | Poor |
Sleep Insights provide a brief summary of the night and how sleep may affect daytime performance. The score is a summary, not a diagnosis or a clinical sleep assessment; its band alone cannot establish whether your sleep is healthy.

Sleep stages
The watch estimates stages labeled Light, Deep, REM, and Awake using heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), and respiratory data. These labels describe Garmin’s interpretation of sensor signals; the watch does not directly measure brain activity. Read a stage breakdown as an estimate rather than an exact account of what happened in your brain during the night.
Other overnight readings
Garmin’s general sleep-tracking documentation lists possible data such as overnight heart rate and HRV, respiration, stress, Body Battery change, breathing variations, Pulse Ox, resting heart rate, and skin temperature. Availability varies, so do not assume every item will appear in every Venu X1 view or setup.

Sleep Score, Sleep Coach, and Sleep Alignment are different
| Feature | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Sleep Score and Insights | A summary and brief interpretation of a night’s sleep. |
| Sleep stages | Sensor-derived estimates of Light, Deep, REM, and Awake periods. |
| Sleep Coach | A recommendation for how much sleep to aim for on the upcoming night. |
| Sleep Alignment | An estimate of how sleep timing aligns with the body’s internal sleep cycle. |
Sleep Coach’s recommended sleep need
Sleep Coach starts with an age-based baseline, then adjusts its recommendation using training load, HRV Status, sleep history, and naps. It is a recommendation for upcoming sleep, not a measurement of how much sleep you already got.
Sleep Alignment’s baseline
Sleep Alignment uses sleep, awake-time, and body-temperature data to estimate alignment with the body’s internal sleep cycle. Garmin says it needs three weeks of compatible-device sleep data to establish a baseline. Garmin places the feature in Garmin Connect under Sleep Coach.

Does the Venu X1 track naps?
Garmin lists the Venu X1 among compatible watches for nap tracking. With a compatible watch running current software, automatic nap detection does not need to be enabled; Garmin nevertheless recommends manually starting a nap for best results. Its guidance says a tracked nap should last at least one minute and no more than three hours.

Garmin says nap details can be reviewed in the watch’s Nap glance or in Garmin Connect; the exact app route may depend on the app version.
How to make sense of a low score or an unexpected result
A single score does not tell you why the night was rated as it was. Before drawing a conclusion, check the record and setup:
- Does the recorded bedtime and wake time match your night, and is the sleep schedule in Garmin Connect correct?
- Did you wear the watch as recommended, including for at least two hours before bed?
- Was optical heart rate active overnight?
- If you use multiple Garmin devices, was the Primary Wearable the one you wore to bed?
- Did the watch sync so the sleep record is available in Garmin Connect?
These checks can uncover missing or misaligned data, but they cannot identify the cause of a particular score. For personal tracking, comparing patterns across multiple nights is generally more informative than treating one night’s number as a verdict. Persistent sleep concerns call for clinical assessment rather than relying on a wearable estimate.
