How to use Galaxy AI Live Translate and Interpreter on a Samsung phone

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Use Live Translate for a phone or supported-app call; use Interpreter for a face-to-face conversation. Live Translate speaks and displays translations during a call, while Interpreter divides the screen so each person can read their own language and hear translated audio. Both require a supported Galaxy phone, compatible software, and, for some languages, downloaded language packs.

Live Translate or Interpreter: which one should you use?

Samsung’s two translation tools solve different situations. Choosing the right one before you start avoids searching through the wrong menu while someone is waiting to speak.

Feature Best for How you open it What you see and hear Language-pack and availability notes
Live Translate Phone calls and calls in selected messaging or meeting apps Samsung Phone app → Call Assist → Live translate Translated speech and on-screen text during the call Available only on eligible Galaxy models, software versions, regions, languages, and supported apps; some languages require a download
Interpreter In-person conversations with two people sharing one phone Swipe down with two fingers → Interpreter Two-sided conversation view, written transcription, and translated audio Requires supported languages and packs; the split-screen view is designed for the two speakers to face opposite halves of the display

Samsung also says Interpreter can provide live translation for an in-person conversation through Quick settings. In practice, that means the same translation engine can be reached through the Interpreter interface rather than through the phone-call controls.

Check compatibility before you try either feature

Confirm the Galaxy model and software

Samsung’s US support information lists the Galaxy S24 among Galaxy AI-ready phones and describes translation assistance on select Android 14 devices running One UI 6.1 or later. That is an eligibility guideline, not a guarantee that every model, carrier edition, region, or language has identical features. Samsung can enable or limit functions by model, country, software build, and app version.

  • Open Settings → About phone → Software information and note the Android and One UI versions.
  • Install any available system update before troubleshooting translation.
  • Use Samsung’s current support information for your country to verify the exact model and feature combination. A phone that supports one Galaxy AI function may not expose every language or every third-party app integration.

Sign in, connect, and download what the phone needs

If the setup screen asks for a Samsung account, sign in. Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data while checking for updates and downloading language files. Samsung documents two useful locations for language downloads:

  • Settings → General management → Language packs
  • Phone → Settings → Live translate → Language

Download the languages before an important call or meeting. A language can appear in a menu but still need a first-time download, and a missing pack can make a translation option unavailable or force the phone to fetch it while you are trying to speak.

Understand the language list

Samsung’s supported-language information includes Arabic; Chinese variants; English regional variants; French regional variants; German; Hindi; Indonesian; Italian; Japanese; Korean; Polish; Portuguese variants; Romanian; Russian; Spanish regional variants; Swedish; Thai; Turkish; Vietnamese; and Dutch. Samsung reported on October 14, 2026, that adding Hungarian and Malay brought features including Live Translate to 24 languages. The total includes regional or variant entries, and the list can differ between features, countries, and software releases. Select the exact language shown on your phone rather than assuming that one country’s list applies everywhere.

How to use Live Translate on a Samsung phone call

Start Live Translate

  1. Open the Samsung Phone app.
  2. Place a call or answer an incoming call.
  3. On the in-call screen, tap Call Assist.
  4. Tap Live translate.
  5. At the top of the translation panel, choose the language you will speak and the language used by the other participant.

Speak normally after the languages are selected. The phone processes each person’s speech, plays a translated voice, and shows text on the display. Pause briefly between thoughts so the system can detect the end of one utterance and begin the next translation. Keep the phone’s microphone and speaker unobstructed; a case, hand, or noisy environment can reduce recognition quality even when the feature is working correctly.

Change a language during the call

Open the Live Translate panel again and change the language assigned to either participant. Check both selectors after switching: choosing a new language for one side does not necessarily change the other side. If the required language is not listed, leave the call only if necessary and download its pack from the language settings described above; an update or regional restriction may also be responsible.

Use translated text when audio is difficult

The on-screen transcript is useful when a translated voice is hard to hear, when you are in a public place, or when a proper name needs visual confirmation. Read the text on your side of the call and ask the other person to repeat a short phrase if recognition appears wrong. Translation is not a verbatim guarantee: accents, background noise, overlapping speakers, slang, names, and specialist terms can change the result.

SAMSUNG Galaxy S23 5G, US Version, 128GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.

Use Live Translate in supported calling apps

Samsung says Live Translate is also available in selected apps, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Signal, LINE, WeChat, Telegram, Meet, and KakaoTalk. The supported-app list can change, and availability may depend on the phone, app version, account, region, and software build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the messaging or meeting app from its app store.
  2. Start or answer a supported audio or video call.
  3. Look for the call-assistance or translation control supplied by the Galaxy phone. The exact button placement can differ from the Samsung Phone app.
  4. Select the two spoken languages and begin speaking.

If no translation control appears, do not assume the app is permanently unsupported. Check that you are using the Samsung device’s current Phone and system software, that the app is on Samsung’s current supported list for your region, and that the required language packs are installed. App support is subject to change.

How to use Interpreter for a face-to-face conversation

Open Interpreter and select both languages

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open the full Quick settings panel.
  2. Tap Interpreter. If it is not visible, edit the Quick settings buttons and add it, or open Interpreter from the Galaxy AI tools available on your model.
  3. Choose your language under the bottom microphone.
  4. Choose the other speaker’s language under the top microphone.
  5. Allow microphone access if Android displays a permission prompt.

The bottom microphone represents the person holding the phone in the normal orientation. The top microphone represents the person facing the opposite side. Verify those assignments before speaking; reversing them can make otherwise accurate speech appear under the wrong language.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 5G, 256GB, Titanium Violet - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.8″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and up to ~2600 nits peak brightness — delivering a bright, sharp screen with smooth scrolling and great outdoor visibility.

Turn the screen toward the other speaker

Tap the view-mode control in Interpreter. The upper half of the display flips toward the other person, while your side remains readable to you. Place the phone on a table or hold it between both speakers so each person can see the half intended for them. A stand or case with a stable viewing angle is optional; neither accessory is required.

Speak, read, and listen

  1. Tap the microphone on your side.
  2. Speak a complete, reasonably short sentence.
  3. Wait for the transcription and written translation to appear.
  4. Let the phone play the translated audio.
  5. Have the other speaker use their microphone and repeat the process.

Interpreter is designed for alternating turns rather than two people talking at once. Face the active microphone, reduce background noise, and use short sentences for better recognition. For names, addresses, numbers, or medication instructions, confirm the written result before acting on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable Tap to talk for strict turn-taking

Interpreter includes an optional Tap to talk mode. When enabled, each speaker must tap before speaking. This is helpful in a busy room or when automatic turn detection starts too early, but it adds an extra action to every turn. Open Interpreter’s settings, enable Tap to talk, and have both people tap their own microphone before speaking.

Interpreter settings that make repeated conversations easier

Open Interpreter’s settings to manage the options available on your phone. Samsung documents controls for:

  • Language packs: install or remove downloaded translation languages.
  • Voice styles: choose among the voices offered for translated speech.
  • Recents: review recent Interpreter activity where the feature and software support it.
  • Tap to talk: require a tap from each speaker before speech capture begins.

Menu names can vary slightly by One UI release. If a setting is missing, update the phone and check whether the option is limited by language, model, or region.

Privacy and processing: what the phone does with speech

Samsung identifies translation as an on-device function on supported devices and provides a Process data only on device control under Galaxy AI settings. To review it, open Settings, search for Galaxy AI, and inspect the data-processing option shown on your phone. On-device processing can be preferable for sensitive conversations, but it may require the relevant language pack and enough local resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not generalize that setting to every Galaxy AI feature. Samsung notes that other Galaxy AI tools may use cloud processing. Read the processing choice shown for the specific feature, and avoid sharing confidential information through a translation tool unless the participants understand the phone’s settings and the risks of errors.

What to do when Live Translate or Interpreter does not work

The feature is missing

  • Check that the phone is an eligible Galaxy model and is running the required Android and One UI release.
  • Install pending system and Samsung app updates.
  • Sign in to a Samsung account if requested.
  • Confirm that the feature is available in your country and for your carrier or regional software build.

A language is not available

  • Open Settings → General management → Language packs and install the missing pack.
  • For calls, check Phone → Settings → Live translate → Language.
  • Verify the exact regional variant, such as an English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, or Chinese entry.
  • Retry after connecting to a reliable network and restarting the Phone or Interpreter app.

Translation is inaccurate or delayed

  • Use one speaker at a time and pause between sentences.
  • Move away from music, traffic, fans, and other voices.
  • Speak clearly without slang, rapid abbreviations, or several languages in one sentence.
  • Check the selected source and destination languages; an incorrect assignment can look like a recognition failure.
  • For critical information, compare the written transcription with the speaker and confirm names, numbers, dates, and instructions.

The microphone or audio does not work

  • Grant microphone permission when prompted.
  • Check Settings → Privacy → Permission manager → Microphone and make sure the Phone or Interpreter app is allowed.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth headsets temporarily to test the phone’s own microphone and speaker.
  • Remove anything covering the microphone openings and raise the media or call volume.

A third-party app has no Live Translate button

Update the app, confirm that it is one of Samsung’s currently supported apps, and test a call in the Samsung Phone app. If Live Translate works in Samsung Phone but not in the third-party app, the difference is likely app integration or regional support rather than a general Galaxy AI failure. Samsung’s supported-app list is changeable.

How availability has changed

Samsung’s launch documentation originally described Live Translate in 13 languages. Later support expanded the language set, and Samsung reported 24 languages after adding Hungarian and Malay on October 14, 2026. Those figures describe Samsung’s published feature availability at different points; they should not be read as a promise that every language is enabled for every model, region, app, or Interpreter mode. The list on your phone is the practical authority for the software build you are using.

Use translation safely

  • Treat translated speech as assistance, not as a certified interpreter for legal, medical, immigration, emergency, or financial decisions.
  • Repeat important details in writing and ask the other person to confirm them.
  • Keep emergency calls simple and state the location and immediate need clearly; use a qualified human interpreter when accuracy is essential.
  • Download language packs and test both microphones before a trip, appointment, or business call.
  • Tell the other participant that an automated translation feature is active, especially when the conversation contains personal information.
