How to Use Full-Page Screenshots to Document WordPress Accessibility Regressions

Use the same, fully documented page state for a baseline and a candidate build, capture the entire scrollable page, compare the images, and attach the visual evidence to axe, keyboard, and screen-reader findings. A full-page screenshot can show a missing focus ring, clipped text, overlapping controls, a contrast change, or a responsive layout shift. It cannot prove semantic structure, keyboard operability, screen-reader output, or WCAG conformance by itself. The reliable method is a repeatable evidence chain: freeze the test context, settle the page, capture every relevant viewport and state, review diffs, run automated checks, perform manual tests, and file a reproducible ticket.

What a full-page screenshot can prove

A screenshot is a record of what the browser rendered at one URL, viewport, time, and interaction state. Used correctly, it makes visual accessibility regressions easy to see and difficult to dispute. Typical findings include:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A focus indicator that disappeared or became too faint.
  • Text clipped by a fixed-height container, overlap between controls, or a broken responsive layout.
  • A menu, dialog, skip link, or error message rendered in the wrong place.
  • A visible color or contrast change after a theme, plugin, or CSS deployment.
  • Images, labels, or landmarks that are visually missing from the page.

The image does not establish that a heading has the correct semantic level, that a control is reachable by keyboard, that a screen reader announces the right name and state, or that the page conforms to WCAG. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines state: “Conformance (and conformance level) is for full web page(s) only, and cannot be achieved if part of a web page is excluded.” A screenshot is therefore one artifact in a complete test, not a conformance certificate.

Freeze the baseline and candidate context

Most visual diffs that waste engineering time come from changing the test conditions rather than changing WordPress. Record the following before taking either image, then use exactly the same values for the baseline and candidate runs:

  • Exact URL and route, including query parameters and locale path.
  • WordPress core, theme, and plugin versions.
  • Deployment, release, or commit identifier.
  • Browser name and version, operating system, viewport width and height, device scale factor, and zoom.
  • Locale, timezone, geolocation, logged-in state, user role, and feature flags.
  • Content, cookie, consent, and personalization state that affects rendering.
  • Fonts and other externally loaded assets, if your test environment can vary them.

Put these values in a machine-readable sidecar file next to each image. A useful record includes the capture timestamp in UTC, route, commit, browser, viewport, zoom, locale, authentication state, and a list of masks or omitted regions. Never overwrite a baseline in place: immutable artifacts let a reviewer reproduce the comparison later.

Make the page deterministic before capture

Full-page capture scrolls through content that may not have existed when the first pixels were painted. Wait for web fonts, images, lazy-loaded sections, menus, cookie banners, animations, and network requests to settle. For a stable test:

  1. Navigate to the exact route and assert that the expected landmark or heading is present.
  2. Wait for the page’s loading indicator to disappear and for fonts and critical images to finish loading.
  3. Scroll through the page or use the screenshot tool’s full-page behavior so lazy images are requested.
  4. Disable animations and caret blinking, or mask those regions when disabling them is impossible.
  5. Close or accept consent dialogs in a documented way. Do not silently remove a banner from only one side of a comparison.
  6. Freeze clocks, random data, rotating carousels, ad slots, chat widgets, and personalized recommendations where your test harness permits it.
  7. Document every mask. A mask hides evidence, so explain why it is necessary and test the masked component separately.

Keep states separate. Capture the default page, keyboard-focus states, hover and active states, expanded menus, validation errors, and modal dialogs as individual fixtures when those states matter. Combining all states into one image makes a diff hard to interpret.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capture a full-page screenshot with Playwright

Playwright’s screenshot API accepts fullPage: true, which captures the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. Install Playwright and its browser binaries in the project that owns the test:

npm install -D @playwright/test
npx playwright install

A minimal capture test sets a fixed viewport, waits for a meaningful page condition, disables motion, and writes an image with a stable name:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('capture the accessibility fixture', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com/accessibility-fixture', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await expect(page.getByRole('main')).toBeVisible();
  await page.addStyleTag({ content: `*, *::before, *::after {
    animation: none !important;
    transition: none !important;
    caret-color: transparent !important;
  }` });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/candidate-full.png', fullPage: true });
});

Use accessible locators such as getByRole in setup and make an explicit assertion before interacting with a control. That assertion fails early when the page is not in the intended state, instead of producing a misleading screenshot. For browser-sensitive layouts, run representative Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects; a single engine can hide a regression that appears in another.

Save metadata with the image

Write a JSON sidecar beside each capture. For example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
{
  "url": "https://example.com/accessibility-fixture",
  "commit": "2026-10-15T12:00:00Z-build-1842",
  "browser": "Chromium 131",
  "os": "Linux",
  "viewport": "1440x900",
  "zoom": 1,
  "locale": "en-US",
  "loggedIn": false,
  "masks": []
}

Replace the illustrative values with the actual values emitted by your CI run. Keeping metadata machine-readable allows a ticket reviewer to distinguish a CSS change from a browser or locale change.

Compare the candidate with a baseline

Playwright’s page assertions support full-page screenshot comparison. The first approved run creates the baseline; subsequent runs compare against it:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('full page has no unintended visual regression', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com/accessibility-fixture', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await expect(page.getByRole('main')).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('accessibility-full.png', {
    fullPage: true,
    animations: 'disabled',
    caret: 'hide',
    maxDiffPixels: 100
  });
});

Choose a threshold deliberately. A zero-pixel threshold is appropriate for a completely deterministic fixture; a small allowance can absorb antialiasing noise. Record the threshold in the test and ticket. Do not raise it until a reviewer has inspected the changed pixels, because a generous threshold can hide a real focus or contrast regression.

Review every diff manually

For each changed region, classify the result as an intentional product change, rendering noise, or a real regression. Check the source and state before accepting a new baseline. A visual diff is strongest when the ticket includes the baseline image, candidate image, an overlay or diff image, the threshold, and a short explanation of each intentional change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run automated accessibility checks in the same state

Use @axe-core/playwright or axe DevTools after the page has reached the same deterministic state used for the screenshot. A whole-page scan can be added to the test:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
import AxeBuilder from '@axe-core/playwright';

test('page has no known axe violations', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com/accessibility-fixture', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await expect(page.getByRole('main')).toBeVisible();
  const results = await new AxeBuilder({ page }).analyze();
  expect(results.violations).toEqual([]);
});

Store the axe output, including rule IDs, impact, affected selectors, and remediation links, as a CI artifact. Automated tools catch approximately 30% of accessibility issues, according to the Make WordPress Accessibility Team’s testing guidance. Treat the scan as a starting point: it cannot assess every WCAG requirement and cannot replace human interaction.

Perform manual and assistive-technology checks

After reviewing the image and axe results, test the page as a person using the interface:

  • Use only the keyboard. Confirm that every interactive element is reachable, the focus order is logical, and focus remains visible.
  • Open and close menus, dialogs, disclosures, and autocomplete controls with the keyboard. Check escape behavior and focus return.
  • Inspect headings, landmarks, reading order, text alternatives, form labels, instructions, and error messages.
  • Zoom the browser and test narrow widths to expose clipping, reflow failures, and horizontal scrolling.
  • Use a screen reader such as NVDA or VoiceOver when available. Record announced role, name, state, value, and reading order.
  • Repeat relevant checks in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit when engine differences could alter focus, layout, or announcements.

WordPress testing guidance specifically calls for keyboard testing and optional NVDA or VoiceOver checks. Document the exact key path and observed output, not merely “keyboard tested.”

Build a reproducible accessibility ticket

A reviewer should be able to reproduce the problem without asking for missing context. Attach or link these items:

  • URL and route.
  • WordPress, theme, and plugin versions plus the commit or deployment identifier.
  • Browser and version, operating system, viewport, zoom, locale, login state, and feature flags.
  • Setup state and numbered reproduction steps.
  • Baseline screenshot, candidate screenshot, diff image, and comparison threshold.
  • Axe rule IDs, impact, affected selectors, and remediation links.
  • Keyboard path and focus observations.
  • Screen-reader observations: reading order, role, name, label, and state.
  • Expected result and actual result.
  • WCAG success-criterion ID when the mapping is confident.
  • Severity, owner, and issue or ticket link.

Use a concise title that identifies the component and state, such as “Mobile menu focus ring disappears after theme build 1842.” Include the artifact filenames exactly as stored in CI so the evidence remains traceable.

What to capture across responsive and interactive states

One desktop image is not a full-page accessibility record. Capture every responsive variation that users can encounter, such as a wide desktop, tablet breakpoint, and narrow mobile viewport. Also capture states that change the accessibility experience:

  • Default, hover, focus-visible, active, disabled, and visited controls where styling differs.
  • Expanded and collapsed navigation, accordions, tabs, and disclosures.
  • Open and closed dialogs, including the background inert state and focus return.
  • Form errors, success messages, validation hints, and empty results.
  • Authenticated and anonymous views when permissions alter the markup.

WordPress Openverse guidance describes visual-regression tests that match whole pages or individual elements in specific states. Use a focused element assertion when a full-page diff would be dominated by an unrelated rotating region, but keep a full-page capture for the evidence record when the issue affects page structure or reflow.

Choosing a comparison method

Playwright assertions, raw image-diff tools, and manual review serve different purposes. Use them together rather than treating one as a replacement for the others.

Method Repeatability Dynamic content Cross-browser coverage Artifact retention False-positive control Connection to DOM or WCAG evidence
Playwright full-page assertion High when viewport, state, and browser are fixed Requires waits, animation control, and documented masks Run the same test in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects CI can retain baseline, candidate, and diff files Thresholds, disabled animations, and stable locators help Can be paired directly with locator assertions and axe output
Raw image-diff tooling Depends on your capture and diff pipeline Needs your own waiting, masking, and normalization Whatever browsers your capture system runs Requires explicit artifact and metadata handling You control algorithms and thresholds, but must tune them Images alone do not identify DOM nodes or WCAG criteria
Manual visual review Lower between reviewers and runs A reviewer can recognize intentional or transient content Can cover any browser a tester operates Needs screenshots and written observations Human judgment reduces some noise but can miss small changes Must be combined with DOM, axe, keyboard, and assistive-technology evidence

For regression gates, use Playwright or another repeatable capture as the trigger, then require manual review before accepting a baseline. Raw diff tooling is useful when your existing pipeline already produces images or when you need custom masking; manual review remains essential for accessibility meaning.

Why axe-only automation is insufficient

Evidence approach Detectable issue types Manual effort Reproducibility Confidence in keyboard and screen-reader behavior
Axe-only automation Rules that can be inferred from the DOM and computed styles Low initial effort High for the same DOM and tool version Low; it does not operate the interface or hear announcements
Screenshot plus axe, keyboard, and assistive technology Visual, structural, interaction, announcement, and many rule-based issues Higher, because humans must execute and record scenarios High when state, artifacts, versions, and paths are recorded Substantially higher, while still requiring expert judgment

Do not convert an axe pass into a claim of WCAG conformance. Map a finding to a success criterion only when the evidence supports that mapping, and identify the exact state in which it occurs.

Common failures and fixes

The screenshot ends before lazy content appears

Cause: the page was captured before images or infinite-scroll content loaded. Fix: wait for the expected landmark or content count, scroll through the page, and verify that image requests completed. Add a deterministic fixture rather than an arbitrary long delay when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every run produces a large diff

Cause: changing viewport, fonts, locale, time, personalization, ads, animations, or consent state. Fix: compare the sidecar metadata, freeze those inputs, disable motion, and mask only documented nondeterministic regions. Re-capture the baseline only after reviewing the changed pixels.

The test hangs at network idle

Cause: analytics, chat, or streaming requests never become idle. Fix: block or stub nonessential requests, wait for a specific visible condition, and set a bounded timeout. Record which requests were blocked so the candidate and baseline use the same policy.

A cookie banner appears in only one image

Cause: different cookie storage or consent handling. Fix: start from the same storage state, apply the same accept or dismiss action, and capture the banner as a separate state if it is part of the user experience.

Text differs by a few pixels between machines

Cause: operating-system fonts, browser versions, device scale, or GPU rendering. Fix: pin the browser and container image, load the same font files, fix device scale and zoom, and use a narrowly documented diff allowance for unavoidable antialiasing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image looks correct but the bug is real

Cause: semantic, keyboard, or screen-reader failures are not visible in pixels. Fix: attach DOM inspection, axe output, keyboard steps, and screen-reader observations. A screenshot cannot prove an invisible accessibility property.

Playwright cannot find the expected control

Cause: a changed accessible name, role, or loading state. Fix: assert the intended state first, inspect the accessibility tree, and update the fixture only when the change is intentional. Avoid replacing accessible locators with brittle CSS selectors merely to make the test pass.

A baseline was accidentally replaced

Cause: CI wrote the candidate over the approved artifact. Fix: store baselines in version control or immutable artifact storage, require review for baseline updates, and retain the commit and metadata with every image.

Performance, reliability, and cost planning

Full-page screenshots are more expensive than viewport captures in time and storage because the browser must lay out and rasterize the entire document. Keep pages reasonably deterministic, avoid unnecessary retries, and capture only the states and viewports that answer a defined accessibility question. Parallelize independent routes, but cap concurrency so the test server does not throttle or reorder content. Retain compressed PNG, JPEG, or WebP artifacts according to your team’s audit policy; preserve the original diff format when pixel-level review matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a fast smoke set on every pull request and the complete browser matrix on a scheduled or release pipeline if runtime is a constraint. A failed screenshot should preserve the trace, console output, network failures, candidate image, and metadata. This turns a flaky failure into a diagnosable one rather than a blind retry.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is the first alternative to try when you want a hosted capture: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; only clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; and each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides MCP tools named take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The one-call cURL example below captures a WordPress page as a WebP file. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/accessibility-fixture -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/accessibility-fixture"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/accessibility-fixture' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const buffer = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', buffer));

For accessibility evidence, keep the same URL, viewport, cookies, headers, and state between baseline and candidate requests. ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector waits, delay or network-idle waits, ad and tracker blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and parameter names used by other screenshot APIs for easier migration. These options help reproduce a page state, but they do not replace axe, keyboard, or screen-reader testing.

Use standards and scope carefully

WordPress coding standards expect WordPress core, WordPress.org websites, and official plugins to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Treat that as the target for those projects, not as proof that every third-party theme or plugin meets the same level. Map screenshots and test observations to WCAG success-criterion IDs only when the relationship is clear. Report the affected page state and whether the observation is visual, DOM-based, keyboard-based, or assistive-technology-based.

Because conformance applies to the full page, capture all relevant responsive variations and do not exclude a component simply because it is below the fold. When a page contains a modal, menu, error state, or other conditional interface, test and retain that state separately. The result is a defensible record of what changed, under which conditions, and which accessibility evidence supports the finding.

A practical release checklist

  • URL, route, versions, commit, browser, OS, viewport, zoom, locale, login state, and feature flags are recorded.
  • Fonts, images, lazy content, animations, consent, personalization, and network conditions are deterministic.
  • Baseline and candidate use identical setup and documented masks.
  • Full-page images exist for each relevant viewport and interactive state.
  • Diff thresholds are written down and every changed region was reviewed.
  • Axe output is stored with rule IDs, impact, selectors, and remediation links.
  • Keyboard, focus, zoom, reflow, and screen-reader checks are recorded.
  • Ticket includes expected and actual behavior, reproduction steps, artifacts, versions, severity, owner, and WCAG mapping where confident.
  • Artifacts are immutable and can be traced to a commit or deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a full-page capture include the WordPress admin bar?

Capture the state your users actually experience. For a public-site regression, use an anonymous fixture without the admin bar; for an authenticated workflow, record the role and include the bar consistently in both baseline and candidate images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I handle a page that changes legitimately every day?

Create a controlled fixture or freeze the changing data at the test boundary. If that is impossible, isolate the volatile component, document the mask, and test that component separately instead of accepting broad pixel differences.

Can I use a screenshot as the only evidence in a WCAG audit?

No. Pair it with DOM and axe results, keyboard observations, and screen-reader evidence. The image records rendered appearance, not semantics or operability.
