Use Fortnite’s map to plan where you want to go, then use the minimap to track your position as you travel. The exact map and marker controls depend on your mode and input settings, and a loot marker is not guaranteed to produce a compass bearing in every Battle Royale match. Check the controls in your own game before relying on a key or HUD cue.
Check your controls before opening the map
Fortnite controls vary by device and can be customized in game. Epic’s control-settings guidance explains how to open Settings and select the tab for your input type. On PC or Mac, the settings menu can be opened with Esc; on PlayStation, use Options; on Xbox, use Menu; and on Switch, use +. The specific map binding is not established by these instructions, so use the binding displayed in your current mode’s settings rather than assuming one universal key.

Epic’s controls documentation likewise says controls differ by device and may be customized. Select the keyboard-and-mouse or controller settings that match how you are playing, then check the map-related binding there.

Plan a route with the map, then follow your position on the minimap
- Open the map using the binding shown in your settings. Use the larger map view to identify the loot destination and the direction you need to travel.
- Place a marker if your mode offers that option. A marker can make a destination easier to pick out when you reopen the map. Close the map and look at the HUD to see whether your current mode also displays a compass cue for it; do not assume the marker creates one.
- Keep the minimap in view while moving. Epic describes the minimap as a small screen-corner map showing your position relative to the overall map, with your pointer changing position as you move. Use it to check whether you are making progress toward the destination.
- Recheck the map and nearby landmarks periodically. If the route is unclear, pause to orient yourself rather than treating a compass cue as the only navigation aid.
Epic’s minimap description is available in its Minimap documentation. This is a position reference, not a guarantee of where loot will spawn or a recommendation for a season-specific route.

Turn the minimap on if it is hidden
Epic’s developer documentation gives this route to enable the minimap: press Esc, select Settings, open HUD Options, set Minimap to On, then select Apply. That path is documented for the described interface; menus and labels may differ by mode or current interface, so verify the equivalent HUD setting in your game.

Epic’s documentation for Map Indicator devices and Player Marker devices applies to Fortnite Creative. Map Indicators can add custom points of interest to the minimap and overview map; Player Markers can display player positions and optional distance. These device features do not establish standard Battle Royale marker controls or prove that a loot marker there creates a compass bearing.

For Battle Royale, test the behavior in the match you are playing: place a marker if available, close the map, and check whether the HUD shows a corresponding cue. If it does not, navigate by the minimap, map checks, and visible landmarks.
