How to Use FFmpeg to Stream Videos from an S3 Bucket to YouTube Live

You can stream an S3 video to YouTube Live by giving FFmpeg an accessible HTTPS URL for the object, then sending FFmpeg’s output to the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a private S3 object, a presigned URL is a practical way to authorize access without making the object public. FFmpeg must keep running on a computer or server with network access to both services; this is a file-to-live-stream workflow, not a camera stream or a native S3-to-YouTube connection.

What you need before you start

  • An S3 object containing the video you intend to broadcast.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can reach S3 and YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
  • A usable S3 URL: either an intentionally public object URL or, preferably for a private object, a presigned HTTPS GET URL.
  • A scheduled or current YouTube live stream, with its RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key available in Live Control Room.

YouTube recommends retrieving the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and entering the stream key there. The exact endpoint and key are specific to the stream. Use YouTube’s displayed RTMPS address rather than an old tutorial’s sample endpoint. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP; its developer guidance specifies RTMPS ingestion over port 443. YouTube: stream using an encoder · YouTube Live ingestion protocol

How to stream an S3 video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg

1. Get an authorized S3 input URL

S3 objects are private by default. For a private object, create a presigned URL that authorizes a GET request. AWS presigned URLs provide temporary access based on the permissions of the user or role that created them; they do not change the bucket’s access policy. A public object URL is an alternative only when public access is intentional and configured to allow retrieval.

Treat a presigned URL as a secret bearer credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the object until it expires. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, log, or source-control repository. AWS checks expiry when a request is made. A transfer that began before expiry can finish, but a reconnect after expiry fails. Make the URL valid for the expected stream duration and possible restart, and generate a fresh one if needed. 2. Create the YouTube stream and get its credentials

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy that stream’s displayed RTMPS server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; do not use an endpoint copied from an unrelated example.
  3. Confirm the stream is receiving video in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.

YouTube’s API can expose primary and backup ingestion addresses, but for a manual FFmpeg setup use the endpoint shown for your current stream. YouTube Live ingestion protocol

3. Run FFmpeg at real-time speed

Set the input variable to the complete, unmodified HTTPS URL from S3. Set the output base URL and key to the values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The following command is a starting shape, not a universal YouTube encoding preset:

ffmpeg -re -i "$S3_PRESIGNED_URL"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

The command illustrates FFmpeg reading a URL input and sending an FLV output over an RTMP-family protocol. FFmpeg documents URL inputs and RTMPS support; its protocol documentation includes FLV examples for RTMP-family outputs. FFmpeg documentation · FFmpeg protocols · FFmpeg formats

-re reads a file at its native rate instead of sending it as quickly as possible. That matters when presenting a prerecorded file as a live stream. The example uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and the yuv420p pixel format, but you must choose resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and keyframe behavior for your source and target. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations; the sample is not a fixed preset. YouTube encoder settings

4. Check the incoming stream before going public

Watch the preview or status in Live Control Room and confirm that video and audio are arriving as expected. Starting FFmpeg transmits the file to YouTube; it does not, by itself, create a scheduled event or guarantee that the event is public. Use the controls for the specific event to start the public broadcast when the preview is ready.

Can FFmpeg read an S3 presigned URL?

Yes. FFmpeg can use a URL as an input, so it can read the object through a presigned HTTPS URL if the URL authorizes the request and remains valid when FFmpeg makes it. Use the exact URL returned by AWS; do not edit or truncate its query string. For a private bucket, this avoids changing the object to public access. Public S3 URL or presigned URL?

Choice Access and confidentiality Expiry and recovery When it fits
Intentionally public object URL Anyone able to obtain the URL may retrieve the object, subject to the bucket and object access configuration. No presigned-URL expiry applies; actual accessibility depends on the public access configuration. Only when public distribution of the source file is intended.
Private object with presigned URL Grants temporary access without changing the bucket policy; protect the full URL like a credential. A new request after expiry fails. An already-started transfer can finish, but a reconnect after expiry needs a fresh URL. The safer fit for a typical private-bucket workflow.

A presigned URL is not permanent access: its lifetime needs to cover the expected stream and likely restart window. AWS explains how presigned URLs work and how S3 evaluates their expiry. AWS presigned URL overview · AWS expiry details

How to use RTMPS with FFmpeg

Use the RTMPS server URL and key from the current YouTube Live Control Room configuration as the output destination. In the command, the RTMPS URL and stream key are kept in separate variables for clarity; the example appends the key to the server URL. The destination’s exact form is specific to the stream, so use the values YouTube provides rather than assuming a fixed path. Keep the key out of shared files and logs. If it is exposed, replace or revoke it using YouTube’s stream controls. YouTube encoder setup · RTMPS ingestion details

Looping a video and keeping the stream running

FFmpeg has stream-loop options for repeating a source, but looping a file does not create a scheduled YouTube event or guarantee a seamless transition between repetitions. Test the loop and inspect playback in Live Control Room. A single FFmpeg process also depends on the host staying awake, connected, and running: if the computer sleeps, loses its network connection, or the process exits, the outgoing stream stops. A persistent server can provide a more suitable runtime for unattended operation, but that choice brings its own hosting, network, monitoring, and outbound-transfer considerations. No cost or performance advantage can be assumed without evaluating the specific setup.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg cannot open the S3 input The URL is incomplete, invalid, expired, or does not authorize retrieval. Use the full unmodified HTTPS URL. For a private object, generate a fresh presigned GET URL and verify its expiry and permissions.
The stream starts, then fails after a reconnect The presigned URL expired before FFmpeg made the new request. Generate a URL with enough validity for the expected run and restart window; replace it when expired.
YouTube does not receive the stream The output endpoint or stream key is incorrect, or the host cannot reach the ingest endpoint. Copy the RTMPS URL and key from the current Live Control Room stream and verify network access to YouTube’s ingest service.
The video or audio is rejected or appears wrong The example encoding options do not match the source or YouTube’s current recommendations. Check the source’s properties and use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe behavior.
The stream stops when left unattended The computer slept, lost network, or FFmpeg exited. Run the process on a stable host, prevent sleep where appropriate, and monitor the process and connection.
The source URL or stream key may have been exposed A credential was copied into a public script, log, screenshot, or repository. Replace or revoke the YouTube key using its stream controls. For a presigned URL, stop relying on it and create a fresh one; access from the old URL ends according to its expiry and any earlier revocation of the signing credentials.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Streaming a file through FFmpeg does not grant rights to its music, video, or other material. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization rules for copyright and reused content. A technically successful stream is not a determination that the content complies with those policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel without leaving this FFmpeg process running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded-video streams. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day.
