A Premiere is an uploaded video scheduled in YouTube Studio. FFmpeg can instead send a prerecorded file to YouTube as an encoder-originated live stream. Use the Studio Premiere workflow if you want a scheduled Premiere watch page; use the FFmpeg steps below if you specifically want the video sent as a live encoder feed.
Choose the right YouTube workflow
| Workflow | Use it when | Setup | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uploaded-video Premiere | You want viewers to watch an uploaded video together at a scheduled time, with a Premiere watch page. | Upload in YouTube Studio, schedule it, and select Set as Premiere. | YouTube says Premieres do not support Shorts, 360/VR180 video, or output above 1080p. YouTube Premiere help. |
| FFmpeg encoder live stream | You want a prerecorded file to reach YouTube through a live encoder connection. | Create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room, then send the file using that event’s URL and key. | This is a live stream, not YouTube’s upload-based Premiere feature. YouTube encoder setup. |
Schedule a true YouTube Premiere
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and upload the finished video.
- Enter the video details, then choose Schedule.
- Set the date and time and select Set as Premiere.
- Share the resulting watch page so viewers can set reminders and join the live chat when the Premiere begins.
- Check the format limits before scheduling: Shorts, 360/VR180 videos, and output above 1080p are unsupported for Premieres, according to YouTube’s Premiere guidance.
FFmpeg is not needed during this Premiere. If this is the viewing experience you want, use the upload-and-schedule flow rather than an encoder stream.

Send a prerecorded file as an encoder live stream
Set up the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio, select Go Live, and create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the event’s Stream URL and Stream key. Each event has its own connection details; do not reuse a key from an unrelated event. YouTube describes the key as the information that lets an encoder connect and says you can reset it if it is compromised. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP; do not replace the event’s address with a guessed endpoint. YouTube’s encoder settings.
Run FFmpeg with the event details
Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the address and key in the output URL with the values for your event. Keep the key private: do not expose it in screenshots, shared logs, or other public material.
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is a starting template, not a command tested against every FFmpeg build, file, or YouTube event. FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1) and notes its use for real-time output. Its examples include real-time RTMP output using -re, libx264, AAC, and FLV. See the FFmpeg manual and FFmpeg protocol documentation.

The template uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and FLV as a broadly applicable starting point. YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists HEVC and AV1 for supported encoder settings, but use those only if your installed FFmpeg build supports the codec and the selected ingest mode accepts it. Check the current YouTube encoder settings.
Check the settings against the source and YouTube guidance
- Codec and container: The example uses H.264/AAC in FLV. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio in its current encoder guidance. Support can depend on your FFmpeg build and ingest mode. YouTube encoder settings.
- Rate control and frame rate: YouTube specifies CBR and frame rates up to 60 fps. Match the output to your source and the platform’s current guidance rather than choosing settings just because they are higher. YouTube encoder settings.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The template does not set this explicitly, so confirm your encoder’s output settings if the default is unsuitable. YouTube encoder settings.
- Bitrate: Use the current YouTube table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec; make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream. Avoid copying a bitrate without checking that it fits the source and settings. YouTube encoder settings.
Start, inspect, and end the event
- Start FFmpeg early enough to establish a connection and check the preview before the scheduled time.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect both picture and sound.
- When ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting FFmpeg supplies the feed; it does not replace this launch step in YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow. YouTube encoder setup.
- Monitor picture, sound, and stream health during the event. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and checking the preview before going live. YouTube encoder settings.
- At the end, stop the event through YouTube’s controls and stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube encoder setup.
Common problems and fixes
- You need a Premiere watch page, but FFmpeg is sending a live feed: Those are separate YouTube workflows. Upload the video in Studio and select Schedule and Set as Premiere for the official Premiere feature. YouTube Premiere help.
- There is no incoming preview: Check that FFmpeg is running and that you used the exact Stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if it has been exposed. YouTube encoder setup.
- The preview has no sound or a bad picture: Verify the selected file and its audio/video streams, then inspect the preview before launching. YouTube recommends test streams and preview checks; this template has not been tested against your particular input. YouTube encoder settings.
- FFmpeg reports that
libx264is unavailable: FFmpeg installations can differ, and the cited platform documentation does not establish which encoders your local build includes. Check the installed encoders and test your exact file and command before the event; YouTube recommends testing in advance. YouTube encoder settings. - The stream drops or quality is unstable: Check the upload connection and compare your output bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec with YouTube’s current recommendations. Test and monitor stream health rather than raising bitrate blindly. YouTube encoder settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping as a YouTube live stream without leaving your computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is not a camera broadcast or a YouTube Premiere; it plays uploaded videos to YouTube.

Why does the command use -re?
It makes FFmpeg read the file at its native frame rate so the output proceeds in real time instead of racing through the file.
Can I stream a YouTube Premiere above 1080p with FFmpeg?
The above-1080p restriction applies to YouTube’s uploaded-video Premiere feature. Do not treat it as the limit for encoder live streams; check YouTube’s current encoder settings for that separate workflow.
