That keeps FFmpeg sending the file repeatedly; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube event. You still need rights-cleared footage, a verified channel, a tested encoder setup, a reliable upload connection and a plan to monitor and restart the process.
Prepare footage that can be streamed repeatedly
Choose a video file containing footage you own or are licensed to use. That includes music, narration, logos and any third-party clips—not just the car footage. For a repeating Indian car-feature stream, review how the segment begins and ends, and make sure repeated scenes and audio will not mislead viewers into thinking the feed is a new live review or a real-time road report.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may interrupt or terminate a stream if it detects content that remains in the broadcast. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve rights questions before going live.
Set up the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- Check eligibility: Livestreaming must be enabled for your channel. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Enabling a first stream may take at least 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.
- Create or select an encoder stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or choose the event/encoder stream you intend to use. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event.
- Keep the key private: YouTube’s stream key functions like a password. Do not publish it in a tutorial, screenshot, terminal recording or public repository. Store it in a protected secret store or environment configuration, and reset it using the stream settings if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Use the event’s displayed ingest URL: Do not assume a server URL from another event or example applies to yours. Use the exact URL shown in Live Control Room.
Loop a file into YouTube Live with FFmpeg
This example is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or universal preset. It assumes a 30 fps H.264 video, a two-second GOP, and an RTMPS endpoint accepting FLV. Replace the destination placeholders with the URL and key from your event; they are not valid credentials.

-f flv "rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"-stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. -re reads a file at its native frame rate, simulating a live feed rather than sending the file as fast as the computer can read it. These are input options, so put them before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg cautions against using low read rates for inputs that are already live; this pattern is for a file, not a camera or other real-time source. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
In the example, -g 60 sets a 60-frame group of pictures, which is two seconds at 30 fps. -b:v sets the video bitrate; -maxrate and -bufsize constrain rate variation and buffering. The chosen 5 Mbps is YouTube’s published minimum for H.264 at 1080p30, not its recommended bitrate and not a suitable universal setting. Match the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to the source, encoder capacity and measured upload connection.
For a real deployment, avoid putting the stream key directly into a command that may be saved in shell history or visible to other users. Build the destination securely from protected configuration, quote it correctly, and verify that FFmpeg’s build supports the selected encoder and output format. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest; its guidance recommends RTMPS. Check the exact protocol and server details provided for your event.

Choose video and audio settings for your source and connection
YouTube’s published encoder settings are platform recommendations, not measurements of your connection. The bitrate values below are for H.264 and were listed on YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. Use a speed test and choose a quality your upload connection can sustain reliably, with capacity left for normal network variation.

YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its general encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and an interval no longer than four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the codec and output combination you plan to use.
- Resolution and frame rate: Keep the output within what the source and encoder can produce well. A higher setting is not automatically better if the source is lower quality or the upload connection cannot sustain the bitrate.
- Bitrate mode: Configure CBR as YouTube recommends. Confirm the encoder is actually using the intended mode rather than relying on a preset name alone.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds. In the example, a 60-frame interval matches two seconds only if the output is 30 fps; adjust the GOP for another frame rate.
- Audio: Confirm the file has an audio track and that its level and language are appropriate for the audience. For stereo, use the cited 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps guidance as a starting point.
Test the event, then monitor the running process
- Run a preflight test: Use audio and motion comparable to the planned broadcast. Confirm the file plays, FFmpeg can encode and connect, and the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.
- Inspect the preview: Check the Live Control Room preview before the event is public or promoted. Verify that video and audio are present and that the picture is not frozen, cropped incorrectly or visibly damaged.
- Check the watch page and a phone: Confirm the stream appears as expected to viewers, including on mobile, rather than judging solely from FFmpeg’s local output.
- Monitor health and messages: Keep an operator or alerting in place for a long-running stream. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event; see its encoder guidance.
- Test recovery: Decide how the local process will be restarted after a crash, machine restart or network interruption. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes a recovery example for temporary network failures, but recovery is not proof of uninterrupted playback and does not guarantee YouTube will preserve the same event after every interruption. Test the actual FFmpeg build, input, network and event behavior; see the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.
Understand what “nonstop” does—and does not—mean
The loop option can keep FFmpeg reading and sending a file indefinitely while the process, computer, network and YouTube ingest connection continue working. It does not make a local computer immune to power loss, software crashes, network outages or platform-side interruption. A reliable operation therefore needs monitoring and a recovery plan; a running command alone is not an uptime guarantee.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a single stream longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, plan shorter events and preserve a separate local recording where practical; confirm current behavior in Live Control Room rather than treating a longer broadcast archive as assured. Troubleshoot common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems
FFmpeg sends the file too quickly
For file input, ensure -re appears before that input’s -i. Without real-time pacing, a file can be read faster than its playback duration. Do not apply this low-rate file technique to an input that is already live.
The stream does not connect
Check that the event is active, the destination uses the exact server URL from Live Control Room, and the stream key is correct and current. Confirm the channel is eligible for livestreaming and that the selected protocol and output format match the event’s ingest details. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the protected configuration.

YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers see buffering
Compare the encoder’s actual outgoing bitrate with the available upload connection. Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a combination the connection can sustain, then repeat the test. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations are not evidence that a particular home or office connection can deliver them consistently.
The image is blank, frozen or has the wrong cadence
Check the input file and FFmpeg output logs, then verify the chosen video codec, resolution, frame rate and keyframe interval. Make sure the GOP frame count matches the output frame rate: 60 frames is two seconds at 30 fps, but not at every frame rate. Test the selected encoder and format against the exact event before relying on it.

Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync
Confirm the source has the intended audio stream and that the output uses a supported codec. Check levels, sample rate and bitrate in the test preview. For stereo, YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps in advanced settings.

The feed stops after a network or process failure
A looping input does not restart a crashed FFmpeg process or repair an interrupted connection by itself. Arrange supervision or alerting and test a restart procedure. The FIFO muxer’s documented network-recovery example may help with temporary failures, but it is not a guarantee that the event remains uninterrupted or resumes identically.
YouTube interrupts the live broadcast
Review copyright notices and the event’s stream-health messages. Remove or replace material you do not have rights to use, and ask a rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if appropriate. YouTube scans live feeds for third-party content, so a licence alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
