How to Use FFmpeg concat to Loop Indian Music Videos on YouTube Live

To loop a playlist of Indian music videos on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put compatible files in a concat-demuxer playlist, feed that playlist to FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1, and send the encoded output to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The example below is a starting point, not a universal preset: check YouTube’s current settings for your resolution, frame rate and codec, test the feed, and make sure you have the rights to broadcast both the recordings and video.

Before you start

  • Install an FFmpeg build that includes the input formats and encoders you need. Check it with ffmpeg -version; available options can vary by version and build. Use ffmpeg -h to inspect local help.
  • Keep the source videos in a stable directory with enough disk space and an internet connection capable of sustaining your chosen live bitrate.
  • Have permission to broadcast the audio and audiovisual material, including any archive you plan to retain. Having a file does not establish those rights.
  • In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream in Live Control Room so you can retrieve its stream URL and stream key.

FFmpeg’s documentation describes the concat demuxer’s requirements. YouTube’s current encoder settings and Live Control Room configuration should guide the output settings you choose.

Build a concat playlist

Arrange and list the files

Put the videos in the order you want them to play. In a text editor, create playlist.txt in the directory where you will run FFmpeg:

file 'video1.mp4'
file 'video2.mp4'
file 'video3.mp4'

Each file line names one input. Relative paths are interpreted in relation to the process working directory unless otherwise specified, so either run FFmpeg from the playlist’s directory or use paths appropriate to your setup. Concat script filenames with spaces or special characters require correct quoting or escaping under FFmpeg’s concat-script rules; try your actual file list before going live.

Check stream compatibility and duration

The concat demuxer joins files without re-encoding, but it expects the files to have matching streams, codecs, time bases and related stream properties. Different stream layouts or parameters may cause errors or glitches. It adjusts the next file’s timestamps based on the preceding file’s duration; inaccurate duration metadata can create artifacts, and streams of different lengths can leave gaps.

Inspect all inputs before relying on the playlist. If the files do not match, normalize them to consistent stream characteristics first, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter when re-encoding is needed. The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes the demuxer route for compatible streams from the filter route when re-encoding is required. Re-encoding uses compute; test the chosen resolution and settings on the machine that will run the stream rather than assuming it can encode in real time.

Choose output settings for YouTube Live

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; and CBR. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1 audio, 48 kHz and 384 kbps. It also recommends square pixels, progressive scan and Rec. 709 for SDR. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the current table on YouTube’s settings page for your exact combination instead of treating an old example value as a rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The following illustrative command reads the playlist in real time, loops it indefinitely, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends an FLV stream to the supplied ingest endpoint. Replace the playlist, output settings, URL and key with your own. This command is not a tested or universal preset; the example’s 30 fps and 5 Mbps video bitrate are illustrations, not a recommendation for every resolution or codec.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  • -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely; -re reads file input at approximately real-time rate for live output.
  • -safe 0 permits more path forms in a concat playlist. Use it only with a playlist you control.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP in this example; at 30 fps that is a two-second keyframe interval. If you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to preserve the intended interval.
  • The bitrate and rate-control flags shown are examples. YouTube recommends CBR, but FFmpeg’s exact rate-control behavior depends on encoder options and build; validate the output locally and check Live Control Room’s stream health.

If all source streams already match and are suitable for the YouTube ingest configuration, stream copying can reduce CPU work. It is not appropriate when the streams or output container do not fit the target. Re-encoding offers a way to normalize mixed sources, at the cost of additional compute and a generation of encoding.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube and test

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Follow YouTube’s live stream settings and encoder setup instructions to copy the stream URL and key.
  2. Use the exact endpoint provided for that stream rather than assuming a fixed server address. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the contribution feed to its servers.
  3. Insert the URL and key in the command’s output address, then start FFmpeg. Treat the stream key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, logs, shell history or public code. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.
  4. Wait for the incoming preview. Confirm that the expected stream is selected and that both moving video and audio are present; check the stream-health status before making the broadcast public.
  5. Use a private or unlisted test first when appropriate. Monitor the feed while it runs. End the stream through YouTube’s current workflow and stop FFmpeg cleanly.

A process left unattended can stop because of network interruptions, machine restarts, disk problems or encoder errors. A long-running setup therefore needs monitoring and a recovery plan; there is no single restart or supervision command that fits every machine and operating environment. YouTube’s live streaming tips provide platform guidance for testing and monitoring.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Concat reports errors or playback glitches at file boundaries Inputs have different streams, codecs, time bases or related parameters Inspect every file. Use matching sources, normalize them, or use the concat filter when re-encoding is necessary.
Gap, jump or artifact when one clip ends Incorrect duration metadata or audio and video streams with different lengths Check the media durations and stream lengths; test transitions through the playlist before going live.
Playlist cannot find a file Path is interpreted from a different working directory, or a filename needs quoting or escaping Run FFmpeg from the intended directory, correct the path, and test the actual filename syntax.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview Wrong stream selection, URL or key; connection or encoder issue Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check FFmpeg’s output and network connection, and keep the key private.
Stream health warns about quality or connection Output settings may not match the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec or available upload connection Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current bitrate table and monitor the preview and health indicators.
FFmpeg cannot encode smoothly in real time The selected encoder settings may exceed the machine’s available compute Test a suitable lower-cost encoding configuration or use compatible source streams where stream copying is valid.
Stream stops after running unattended Network, host, disk or encoder interruption Check the relevant system and FFmpeg logs, verify connectivity and storage, and arrange operational monitoring and recovery.

Copyright and availability for Indian music videos

Indian music videos can involve separate rights in the sound recording and the audiovisual work. Obtain the permissions required for every track and video, and check the applicable license terms before broadcasting or retaining an archive. YouTube’s livestream terms explain the applicable agreements, but they do not establish that any particular song, recording, label, artist or video is cleared for your use. No particular stream can be assumed safe from a claim, block or interruption, or guaranteed to remain available indefinitely.
