How to Use Ethernet Ports on Sonos—and When to Choose Wi-Fi

To use Ethernet on Sonos, first add a supported product to your system, then connect its Ethernet port to your router or a network switch and allow about one minute for the system to adjust. Ethernet is optional: Sonos recommends Wi-Fi for most homes and small businesses when coverage reaches every room where Sonos is used. Wiring is most worth considering when Wi-Fi is unavailable, unreliable, or heavily interfered with.

What a Sonos Ethernet connection does

A Sonos product with an Ethernet port can connect directly to your home network over a cable. Sonos supports wireless and wired configurations; wiring is a way to address network coverage or reliability needs, not a guaranteed sound-quality or speed upgrade. Not every Sonos speaker has an Ethernet port, so check the exact product before planning a cable run or buying an adapter.

In a wired configuration, some compatible Sonos products can also broadcast a dedicated wireless network for compatible Sonos products. Sonos calls this SonosNet. It is distinct from the wired product’s own Ethernet connection: one product may connect by Ethernet while other compatible products communicate through SonosNet. Some products must instead use home Wi-Fi or a direct Ethernet connection, and home theater surrounds or subwoofers cannot be the first wired product providing that dedicated network. Check Sonos’s current product guidance before relying on a particular model: Switch Sonos between a wireless and wired setup.

Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet based on your network

Connection option When it fits Trade-off
Home Wi-Fi Wi-Fi reliably reaches every room where you use Sonos. Sonos recommends this for most homes and small businesses. No Ethernet run is needed, but the connection still depends on coverage and interference.
Ethernet with SonosNet available Coverage or reliability is inadequate, wireless interference is high, or the installation otherwise benefits from a wired connection. A compatible wired product can provide a dedicated wireless network for compatible products; model limitations and network-channel considerations apply.
Ethernet with SonosNet disabled You want selected products wired while other products remain on home Wi-Fi. This is a configurable arrangement. Confirm the resulting connection types in the Sonos app.

Sonos does not provide a quantified improvement in range, reliability, speed, or sound quality from Ethernet in the cited network guidance. Treat wiring as a conditional network choice, not an automatic upgrade. See Sonos’s recommended settings for Ethernet networks for its guidance.

Connect a supported Sonos product by Ethernet

  1. Add the product first. Set up the Sonos product in your system before making it the wired product in the standard setup.
  2. Connect it to the network. Plug an Ethernet cable into the Sonos product and into a router or network switch connected to your home network. Do not assume that an open port on a Wi-Fi access point or extender is usable: Sonos warns against those ports unless the access point or extender itself is connected to the network by Ethernet. Sonos also advises against Ethernet-over-Power devices.
  3. Allow the changeover. Give the products about one minute to adjust after connecting the cable.
  4. Check the system. Open the Sonos app’s About Your System screen and review Connection Type for each product.
  5. If products are missing, restart them. Reboot the missing products, then allow another minute for them to start and reconnect.

If you use eero, Sonos generally recommends wireless. If you wire multiple products, Sonos advises connecting them to the same eero device or the same switch. Its model- and network-specific instructions are here: Recommended eero network configuration for Sonos.

Read the Connection Type labels correctly

In the Sonos app, go to About Your System and inspect Connection Type. Sonos uses the displayed connection types to distinguish a direct Ethernet connection from SonosNet and home Wi-Fi. The labels “Ethernet,” “SonosNet (Ethernet),” and “SonosNet (wireless)” describe different states; seeing that a product is wired does not mean every other product is using the same path.

  • Ethernet: The product has a direct wired connection to the network.
  • SonosNet (Ethernet): The product is connected through SonosNet, whose network is provided by a wired Sonos product.
  • SonosNet (wireless): The product is using SonosNet wirelessly rather than a direct Ethernet cable.

Portable products may remain on Wi-Fi even when the rest of the system is wired. Home theater setups can also have additional connection behaviors, so check the app per product rather than inferring the whole system’s state from one device. Sonos’s instructions for checking the status are at Check if Sonos is in a wireless or wired setup.

Should you disable Wi-Fi on a wired product?

Usually, do not change this setting just because you connected Ethernet. Disabling Wi-Fi is optional and model-dependent: some products do not offer the setting, Move and Roam products keep Wi-Fi enabled, and some products disable Wi-Fi automatically when connected by Ethernet.

  • The product does not appear in the app: Check the cable and its connection to the router or network switch, then reboot the missing product and wait another minute.
  • A product connected to an extender or access point cannot connect: Verify that device is itself connected to the network by Ethernet; an open Ethernet port alone may not provide a suitable network connection.
  • Several wired products behave inconsistently on eero: Follow Sonos’s topology advice to connect them to the same eero device or the same switch.
  • A portable product still reports Wi-Fi: This can be expected even when other products are wired.
  • You are unsure whether SonosNet is active: Check each product’s Connection Type in About Your System instead of assuming that any Ethernet connection means the entire system is on SonosNet.
