Click the app’s editable text field, open macOS Character Viewer with Edit > Emoji & Symbols or Fn-E/Globe-E, search for an emoji, and select it. The character is inserted at the active cursor when the app and field accept standard Unicode text.
The system-level way to insert emoji
An app does not need to provide a dedicated emoji picker. macOS includes Character Viewer, a system character-entry tool that can browse and insert emoji, symbols, accented letters and characters from other writing systems. Apple documents the viewer and its keyboard shortcut in Use emoji and symbols on Mac.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
There are two direct ways to open it from an app:
- Menu route: choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols, when that menu item is available.
- Keyboard route: press Fn-E or Globe-E, depending on the key marking and keyboard configuration.
In both cases, place the insertion point in the destination field first. Character Viewer can supply the character, but it cannot make a read-only label, canvas, terminal control, or other non-text surface accept input.
Before opening Character Viewer
Put the cursor in a real text field
Click where the emoji should appear before opening the viewer. A blinking caret in a message box, document, search box, form field or caption editor indicates that the app is ready to receive text. If you only selected a window or clicked an image, the emoji has no insertion target.

Check that the app accepts inserted characters
The system route is general, not a compatibility guarantee. Some apps accept ordinary text but reject or filter emoji in particular fields; others may display an unsupported-glyph box if their font or rendering engine lacks the character. Test the same procedure in TextEdit if you need to determine whether the problem is the app or the system.
Know which key your keyboard uses
Apple calls the shortcut Fn-E or Globe-E. Compact Apple keyboards commonly show a Globe icon, while other keyboards label the key Fn. The behavior and available setting labels can vary by macOS release and keyboard setup, so use the wording shown in System Settings > Keyboard.
Method 1: use Edit > Emoji & Symbols
This is the most discoverable method when the app exposes the standard menu.

- Open the app’s Edit menu.
- Choose Emoji & Symbols. In TextEdit, Apple documents this exact path in its Insert special characters in TextEdit on Mac guide.
- Character Viewer appears. Use its search field and enter a descriptive term such as laughing face.
- Click the desired emoji. In the expanded viewer, Apple says you can double-click a character to add it.
- Close the viewer or return to the app and confirm that the emoji appears at the caret.
Searching by meaning is usually faster than scanning every category. If a search returns several visually similar choices, select the exact face, gesture or symbol you intend; the inserted character is the one highlighted in the viewer.
Method 2: open the viewer with Fn-E or Globe-E
The keyboard shortcut is useful when an app hides or omits the Edit-menu command.
- Click in the destination text field.
- Press Fn-E or Globe-E.
- Type a word or phrase first if you want macOS to offer emoji suggestions while you type. Apple’s guide explains that the shortcut can show suggestions for the word being entered; when no suggestion is available, Character Viewer opens.
- If the full viewer opens, search for the emoji and click it. In the expanded view, double-clicking inserts the selected character.
- Verify the result in the original field.
If the shortcut produces suggestions rather than the full browser, that is normal. Choose a suggestion when it matches your intent, or open Character Viewer through the Edit menu or the Input menu described below.
Change what the Fn or Globe key does
If pressing the key does nothing, opens a different feature or conflicts with another shortcut, open System Settings > Keyboard and inspect the Fn/Globe-key setting. Select the option that shows Emoji & Symbols, using the exact label presented on your Mac. Apple notes that the label differs according to whether the keyboard uses an Fn key or a Globe key.

After changing the setting, return to an editable field and test the shortcut again. A keyboard shortcut cannot insert into a field that is not active, so keep the caret visible while testing.

Method 3: use Character Viewer from the Input menu
You can open the viewer from the macOS menu bar even when the current app has no Emoji & Symbols command.
- Open System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input.
- Click Edit.
- Enable Show Input menu in menu bar. Apple documents this path in its Mac user guide.
- Click the Input menu icon in the menu bar.
- Choose Show Emoji & Symbols or the equivalent Character Viewer command shown there.
- Return to the app, click the editable field, search for the emoji and select it.
This route is particularly useful when the application’s menus are customized or when you want a consistent desktop-level entry point. You still must activate the receiving text field before choosing the character.
Set up text replacement for emoji you use repeatedly
For a frequently used emoji, macOS text replacement can expand a short trigger into the character. Apple lists text replacement as an option in its Mac emoji and symbols guide.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input and click Edit.
- Add a text replacement: choose a memorable trigger that you will not type accidentally, then set its replacement to the emoji.
- Save the entry and test the trigger in the app where you intend to use it.
Use a distinctive string such as a short word surrounded by punctuation rather than a common word. Text replacement is a convenience, not a universal override: an app may disable replacements, treat the field as plain input, or reject emoji even after the expansion occurs. Keep the Character Viewer method as a fallback.
Which method should you choose?
| Method | Best for | What can prevent insertion |
|---|---|---|
| Edit > Emoji & Symbols | Opening the viewer from an app menu | The app may not expose the command, or the cursor may not be in an editable field |
| Fn-E / Globe-E | Keyboard-first access and apps with limited menus | The key may be assigned another action; suggestions may appear instead of the full viewer |
| Input menu | A desktop-level route independent of an app’s menu layout | The Input menu must first be enabled in Keyboard settings |
| Text replacement | Emoji used repeatedly in compatible fields | The target app or field may not support macOS replacements or may filter the resulting character |
These are built-in macOS workflows, so no separate emoji keyboard, plug-in or physical accessory is required to try them.
What happens when you choose an emoji
Character Viewer inserts the selected character at the active insertion point; it does not copy an image or create an attachment. That distinction matters in apps with separate text and media controls. Open the viewer from a text caret, not from an image placeholder, drawing layer or formatting toolbar.
An emoji may occupy more than one visible column or combine with another character. For example, a skin-tone variation or a joined family or profession emoji can behave as a sequence even though it appears as one symbol. If the receiving app handles Unicode text normally, the sequence is inserted as text. If the app restricts characters or treats each keystroke specially, it may accept only part of the sequence or reject it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Favorites and repeat selections
If you use the same symbols often, Character Viewer can be more efficient than searching from scratch each time. Apple’s Mac guide includes favorites in the viewer, allowing commonly selected characters to be kept in an easy-to-reach area. Add a character to favorites from the viewer’s controls, then use that section for later insertions. Text replacement is still faster when you remember a trigger, while favorites are useful when you want to see the actual symbol before choosing it.

Keep a trigger distinctive. A common word can expand unexpectedly in a paragraph, and a trigger that contains ordinary letters may be difficult to type when you mean the word itself. Test the replacement in every important app because support is determined by the target field, not only by the macOS setting.
Version and settings notes
Apple’s current Mac user guide documents the Character Viewer workflow without specifying a minimum macOS release. Apple’s TextEdit instructions are published for TextEdit guide version 1.20 and macOS 26, and confirm the Edit > Emoji & Symbols route in that app. The exact names of Keyboard settings and the behavior of the Fn or Globe key can change with the macOS release and the attached keyboard.
For that reason, follow the path System Settings > Keyboard, but use the label actually shown on your Mac. A keyboard with a Globe key may present a Globe-key option; another keyboard may show an Fn-key option. If a setting is not present, use the Edit menu or enable the Input menu instead of assuming Character Viewer has been removed.
Troubleshooting when the emoji does not appear
The Edit menu has no Emoji & Symbols item
Use Fn-E/Globe-E or enable the Input menu and open Character Viewer from the menu bar. Menu contents are controlled by the app, so a missing command does not mean Character Viewer is unavailable.
The shortcut opens suggestions, not the full viewer
macOS may interpret the shortcut in the context of the word you are typing. Select a suggestion if it is correct. Otherwise, open the viewer with Edit > Emoji & Symbols, the Input menu, or the shortcut after moving to a field where no suggestion is generated.
Nothing is inserted
- Click the text field again and make sure the caret is visible.
- Search for a simple, common emoji and select it directly rather than relying on a suggestion.
- Test insertion in TextEdit. If it works there, the original app or field is filtering the character.
- Check whether the field is read-only, numeric-only, restricted to a particular character set or controlled by a custom editor.
A square or missing glyph appears
The character may have been inserted but not rendered by the app’s current font or text engine. Try another emoji, test the same character in TextEdit, and check whether the app displays modern Unicode characters correctly. Rendering support is separate from opening Character Viewer.
The text replacement does not expand
Confirm that the replacement entry is saved, that the trigger is typed exactly, and that the field permits macOS text substitutions. Some applications and specialized controls do not honor system replacements. Use Character Viewer directly when the replacement is ignored.
The Fn or Globe key behaves unexpectedly
Review the setting under System Settings > Keyboard and choose the Emoji & Symbols action if available. Keyboard models and macOS versions can expose different labels. If the key is being used for another hardware function, the Edit-menu or Input-menu route avoids that conflict.

The emoji appears in the wrong place
The viewer inserts wherever focus was last active. Close it, click the intended location again, and reopen it without switching to another control. In a long document, confirm the caret is at the correct paragraph before selecting the character. If focus changes while the viewer is open, return to the document and verify the insertion point before trying again.

Search with descriptions, not only names
Character Viewer search accepts descriptive language. Terms such as laughing face are more useful than trying to remember a category name. If the first term is too broad, add a distinguishing word such as the emotion or object you need.
Keep the insertion point stable
Open the viewer only after clicking the destination field. Switching windows or clicking another control can move the focus, causing the emoji to be inserted somewhere else or nowhere at all. When working in a long document, place the caret precisely before opening the viewer.
Use the viewer for more than emoji
The same Character Viewer handles symbols, accented letters and characters from other languages. This makes it a useful fallback for any app that accepts text but lacks a specialized character palette.
Use a repeatable diagnostic test
When troubleshooting, perform the same insertion in TextEdit first. If Character Viewer opens and the emoji appears in TextEdit, macOS and the character itself are working; investigate the original app’s field or rendering. If TextEdit also fails, check keyboard settings, the active caret and the Input-menu route. This two-app comparison avoids mistaking an app limitation for a system shortcut problem.
What macOS can and cannot guarantee
Character Viewer guarantees a system method for choosing a character; it does not guarantee that every third-party application, document format or individual field will accept or display every emoji. Acceptance depends on the receiving control, while appearance depends on the app’s text rendering and font support. Apple’s instructions describe the insertion workflow rather than compatibility with every app.
For a reliable diagnosis, separate the process into three checks: can Character Viewer open, can the caret receive ordinary inserted text, and can the target app render the selected emoji? The first is a macOS setting or shortcut issue; the second is a focus or field restriction; the third is an application rendering limitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteApple summarizes the purpose of the feature this way: “You can insert emoji as you type on your Mac, or use the Character Viewer to browse and enter emoji, symbols, accented letters and characters from other languages.” The practical implication is that an app-specific picker is optional. The receiving field remains the deciding factor.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open the emoji keyboard on a Mac app without an emoji button?
Click in an editable text field, then press Fn-E or Globe-E. You can also choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols when the app provides that command, or enable Show Input menu in menu bar under System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit and open Character Viewer from the menu bar.
Why does Fn-E show suggestions instead of the full emoji viewer?
macOS can use the shortcut to suggest emoji for the word or phrase you are typing. Choose a matching suggestion, or open the full viewer through Edit > Emoji & Symbols or the Input menu.
What if the app has no Edit > Emoji & Symbols command?
That menu is controlled by the app. Use Fn-E or Globe-E, or enable the Input menu and choose its Character Viewer command. The missing menu item does not by itself mean the system viewer is unavailable.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why is the emoji not inserted after I select it?
Make sure the caret is visible in an editable field. Test the same character in TextEdit. If it works in TextEdit, the original field may be read-only, restricted to certain characters or filtering emoji.
Why do I see a square instead of the emoji?
The character may have been inserted but cannot be rendered by the app’s current font or text engine. Try another emoji and compare the result in TextEdit; opening Character Viewer does not guarantee display support.
Can I create a shortcut for an emoji I use often?
Yes. In System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit, add a text replacement with a distinctive trigger and the emoji as its replacement. Test it in the target app because some fields do not honor macOS text substitutions.
Do I need to buy an emoji keyboard or install a plug-in?
No. Character Viewer, the Fn/Globe shortcut, the Input menu and text replacement are built into macOS. They are sufficient whenever the receiving app and field accept the inserted character.
The Bottom Line
Click an editable text field, then use Edit > Emoji & Symbols, Fn-E/Globe-E or the Input menu to open Character Viewer. Search and select the emoji, and use text replacement for frequent entries. If nothing appears, test in TextEdit: the limitation is usually the field’s focus, character filtering or rendering support rather than the absence of an app-specific picker.
