On a supported iPhone, the Dynamic Island can display certain alerts and Live Activities while the phone is unlocked, but accessory battery and connection information may appear elsewhere. Touch and hold a Dynamic Island activity for details, swipe inward to collapse it, and swipe from either side to switch between two activities. For accessory charge, use the status icons or the Bluetooth settings page instead of expecting every device to create a Dynamic Island panel.
What “accessory hints” means on an iPhone
Apple’s documentation separates three related but different interface behaviors:

- Dynamic Island alerts and Live Activities: temporary or ongoing events that appear in the pill-shaped area on supported iPhone models when the iPhone is unlocked.
- Status icons: small indicators in the iPhone status area, including an icon for connected Bluetooth headphones and an icon that represents the battery level of a paired Bluetooth device.
- Accessory-specific notifications and settings: for example, a low-charge notification for AirPods and a charge readout available from Settings > Bluetooth.
These surfaces overlap in purpose but are not interchangeable. A Bluetooth accessory can be connected without appearing as a Dynamic Island Live Activity, and an accessory that reports a battery level is not guaranteed to expose a percentage in the Dynamic Island. The exact signal depends on the accessory, the iPhone model, and the interface Apple supports for that device.
What Dynamic Island can show
On supported iPhone models, Dynamic Island can show alerts and Live Activities while the iPhone is unlocked. Apple’s examples include a Voice Memo recording, an AirDrop connection, and turn-by-turn directions in Maps. Those examples describe the kinds of events Dynamic Island can surface; they do not establish that every accessory connection or battery change is represented there.

If an accessory-related event is supported as an alert or Live Activity, it appears in the same area and uses the same gestures as other Dynamic Island activities. If no activity appears, check the status icons or the relevant settings page rather than repeatedly tapping the empty area.
Use the Dynamic Island gestures
When an activity is visible, use these gestures to inspect or manage it:
- Expand the activity: touch and hold the Dynamic Island activity. The expanded view shows more detail than the compact pill.
- Collapse the expanded view: swipe inward from either side toward the center. This reduces the activity to its smaller presentation.
- Switch between two activities: when two activities are present, swipe from one side or the other to move between them.
These gestures affect how an existing activity is displayed; they do not turn an unsupported accessory notification into a Live Activity. If touch-and-hold produces no expanded view, there may be only a static status indicator, or the event may not be available in Dynamic Island.
How to tell whether you are looking at an accessory status icon
Accessory information may be visible as a small status symbol rather than a Dynamic Island card. Apple’s status-icon guide identifies an icon for connected Bluetooth headphones. It also identifies a Bluetooth battery icon that shows the battery level of a paired Bluetooth device.

The distinction matters when troubleshooting:

Icons can be easy to miss because they are compact and may share space with other status information. Identify the symbol first, then use the matching explanation instead of assuming that all accessory signals use Dynamic Island.
Check AirPods charge on iPhone
AirPods are an example of an iPhone accessory with documented charge notifications. Apple says iPhone or iPad can show a low-battery notification for AirPods. Apple also documents checking their charge from the Bluetooth settings page.
- Open the AirPods charging case, or take the AirPods out of the case.
- Hold the open case or the earbuds near the iPhone.
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Find the AirPods in the list of paired devices and open their device details to view the charge information that iPhone makes available.
The case-opening or proximity step is important because it gives the iPhone an active opportunity to detect the AirPods. A low-charge notification and a Bluetooth settings readout are separate from a Dynamic Island Live Activity. Do not use the absence of a Dynamic Island panel as proof that the AirPods are uncharged or disconnected.

Apple’s status-icon description says the Bluetooth battery icon shows the battery level of a paired Bluetooth device. It does not say that every Bluetooth accessory reports a level that iPhone can display. Some devices may expose connection status but not battery data, while others may provide a value only after they are actively connected.

Use this order when a battery indicator is missing:
- Confirm that the accessory is paired and currently connected, not merely listed as a previously paired device.
- For AirPods, open the case or remove the earbuds and hold them near the iPhone before checking Settings > Bluetooth.
- Look for the Bluetooth battery status icon rather than assuming the Dynamic Island must contain a percentage.
- Check whether the accessory itself has a charge display or indicator; iPhone cannot display data the accessory does not provide to it.
There is no universal iPhone setting that forces an unsupported accessory to publish a battery percentage. The practical limit is the combination of the accessory’s reporting capability and the iPhone interface Apple supports for it.
Dynamic Island versus accessory status: a quick decision guide

Common situations and the right interpretation
An AirDrop connection appears in Dynamic Island
AirDrop is one of Apple’s examples of a Dynamic Island activity. Touch and hold it to expand the activity if you need more detail. When the transfer-related activity is no longer relevant, it may disappear; that does not change the separate Bluetooth or AirPods status rules.

Maps directions are visible while headphones are connected
Maps directions and a connected-headphones icon can coexist because they represent different events. Use Dynamic Island gestures for the directions activity. Use the status icon to confirm the headphone connection. Neither signal alone establishes the headphone battery level.

A Voice Memo recording occupies the Dynamic Island
Voice Memo recording is another Apple example of a Dynamic Island activity. Touch and hold to expand it, or swipe inward to collapse it. This is an activity control, not an accessory battery panel.
The accessory is connected but Dynamic Island is empty
That can be normal. Connection state may be represented by a status icon, and battery information may be available in Bluetooth settings. Apple’s documented examples do not promise a Dynamic Island Live Activity for every Bluetooth accessory.

1. Identify the surface first
Ask whether you saw a Dynamic Island activity, a status icon, or a notification. The correct next step depends on that classification. Touch-and-hold is appropriate for a Dynamic Island activity; it is not a general command for every icon near the top of the screen.

2. Confirm that the iPhone model supports Dynamic Island activities
Apple qualifies its Dynamic Island instructions to supported iPhone models. If the iPhone does not have a Dynamic Island, the gestures in this article cannot apply to it. Accessory status icons and Bluetooth settings remain separate ways to inspect connection or charge information.

3. Verify the accessory connection
For Bluetooth headphones or another paired device, look for the connected-device indication in the status area and inspect the device in Bluetooth settings. A pairing record by itself does not establish that the accessory is connected at this moment.
4. For AirPods, refresh detection before checking charge
Open the case or remove the AirPods, hold them near the iPhone, and then revisit Settings > Bluetooth. This follows Apple’s documented way to make the charge information available for checking.
5. Do not infer unsupported data
If you see a headphone connection icon but no battery icon or charge value, the available documentation does not justify assuming a hidden percentage exists. The accessory may not report a battery level that iPhone can display, or that information may not be exposed through the current interface.

Apple documents a charging symbol that appears when a supported iPhone starts charging with MagSafe. That symbol confirms charging behavior; it is not an accessory-hints switch and does not enable Dynamic Island battery panels for other devices. Treat it as a charging indicator rather than evidence that every MagSafe or Bluetooth accessory will appear in Dynamic Island.
What you can and cannot expect

A reliable five-step routine
- Check whether the item is a Dynamic Island activity, a status icon, or a notification.
- If it is a Dynamic Island activity, touch and hold it for detail; swipe inward to collapse or swipe sideways to switch between two activities.
- If it is a Bluetooth connection, inspect the headphones-connected or Bluetooth battery status icon.
- If the accessory is AirPods, open the case or remove the earbuds, hold them near iPhone, and check Settings > Bluetooth.
- If no battery value appears, treat that as an availability limitation rather than evidence of a hidden Dynamic Island control.
This routine keeps the three Apple-documented surfaces distinct and prevents a common mistake: searching Dynamic Island for information that iPhone presents as a status icon, notification, or Bluetooth setting instead.
