Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRender your changing app data into a UIImage, then hand that image to iOS sharing. For layouts owned by your code, build a UIKit view and draw it with UIGraphicsImageRenderer. For designs that non-developers must edit, use a template system with named text and image layers. Finally, present UIActivityViewController or a destination-specific integration after checking that destination’s current requirements.
Choose the image workflow first
A dynamic share image has two independent parts: a fixed composition (background, typography, spacing and branding) and changing values (for example, a workout distance, a user name or a selected photo). Decide the destination and output dimensions before writing code. A 1080 × 1920 canvas is a useful Instagram Story example, not a universal requirement; confirm the current specification for every network you support.

UIKit rendering: the native, code-owned option
Create a custom UIView or draw directly in a renderer. This keeps the design in your Swift project and works on-device, but every layout revision requires a code change. Elaborate compositions can require substantial Auto Layout and drawing work.
Template SDK: separate design from values
A template workflow gives layers stable names such as headline and photo. Your app supplies new text and image values at runtime and asks the SDK to render the result. This can suit a design team that needs to revise layouts without changing the app’s rendering code. Confirm the provider’s current SDK support, licensing and offline behavior before committing; the available material does not establish an independent performance comparison.

Render a dynamic share card with UIGraphicsImageRenderer
The renderer accepts an output size and optional format. Its image(actions:) method returns a UIImage; pngData(actions:) and jpegData(withCompressionQuality:actions:) return encoded data. Reuse one renderer when producing several images with the same configuration.
import UIKit
struct ShareCardData {
let title: String
let subtitle: String
let photo: UIImage?
}
func makeShareCard(data: ShareCardData,
size: CGSize = CGSize(width: 1080, height: 1920)) -> UIImage {
let format = UIGraphicsImageRendererFormat()
format.scale = 1 // pixels in the exported image
format.opaque = true
let renderer = UIGraphicsImageRenderer(size: size, format: format)
return renderer.image { context in
let cg = context.cgContext
cg.setFillColor(UIColor(red: 0.08, green: 0.09, blue: 0.14, alpha: 1).cgColor)
cg.fill(CGRect(origin: .zero, size: size))
let inset: CGFloat = 72
let textWidth = size.width - inset * 2
let titleRect = CGRect(x: inset, y: 180, width: textWidth, height: 180)
let subtitleRect = CGRect(x: inset, y: 390, width: textWidth, height: 100)
(data.title as NSString).draw(in: titleRect, withAttributes: [
.font: UIFont.systemFont(ofSize: 76, weight: .bold),
.foregroundColor: UIColor.white
])
(data.subtitle as NSString).draw(in: subtitleRect, withAttributes: [
.font: UIFont.systemFont(ofSize: 42, weight: .regular),
.foregroundColor: UIColor(white: 1, alpha: 0.8)
])
if let photo = data.photo {
let imageRect = CGRect(x: inset, y: 560,
width: textWidth, height: textWidth)
UIColor.white.setFill()
UIBezierPath(roundedRect: imageRect, cornerRadius: 28).fill()
cg.saveGState()
UIBezierPath(roundedRect: imageRect, cornerRadius: 28).addClip()
photo.draw(in: imageRect)
cg.restoreGState()
}
}
}
let card = makeShareCard(data: ShareCardData(
title: "Run complete",
subtitle: "10.2 km • 52:14",
photo: UIImage(named: "runner")
))
For a transparent result, set format.opaque = false and draw without an opaque background. Use PNG for transparency or crisp text; use JPEG when a smaller, photographic file is more important and choose a compression quality appropriate to your destination.
Rendering an existing UIKit view
If Auto Layout already defines your composition, render the view’s layer after it has a final size. Set the view’s bounds explicitly and ensure asynchronous images and fonts have finished loading before capture.
extension UIView {
func asImage() -> UIImage {
let renderer = UIGraphicsImageRenderer(bounds: bounds)
return renderer.image { rendererContext in
layer.render(in: rendererContext.cgContext)
}
}
}
let image = shareCardView.asImage()
For predictable output, render on the main thread after layout (layoutIfNeeded()) and avoid capturing a view while it is mid-animation. Test long titles, right-to-left text, Dynamic Type sizes and missing images.

Share through the iOS system sheet
UIActivityViewController is the broad native handoff. The activities shown depend on the supplied item and the apps installed on the device.
func presentShareSheet(image: UIImage, from presenter: UIViewController) {
let sheet = UIActivityViewController(activityItems: [image],
applicationActivities: nil)
// iPad requires a popover anchor.
if let popover = sheet.popoverPresentationController {
popover.sourceView = presenter.view
popover.sourceRect = CGRect(x: presenter.view.bounds.midX,
y: presenter.view.bounds.midY,
width: 0, height: 0)
popover.permittedArrowDirections = []
}
presenter.present(sheet, animated: true)
}
presentShareSheet(image: card, from: self)
Pass a UIImage when you want the system to choose an appropriate representation. If a destination needs a file URL or encoded bytes, create a temporary PNG or JPEG file and share that URL instead. Handle cancellation as a normal outcome, and do not assume that a particular social app is installed.
Use a named-layer template when designers need control
The template pattern is consistent across providers: retrieve a template, set values for its named text and picture layers, render, then receive a UIImage. Keep identifiers and credentials out of source control; demonstration keys and template IDs from tutorials are not production credentials.
- Create the design with fixed layers and explicitly named dynamic layers.
- Validate text length, image availability and locale before sending values.
- Request a render for the target size and await completion on a background task where the SDK permits it.
- Return to the main actor before updating UIKit or presenting the share sheet.
- Cache only when the inputs and template version make the cached image safe to reuse.
Ask the provider how templates are packaged, whether rendering works without a network connection, how licenses are counted and what happens when a template is unavailable. These details affect launch-time reliability and app size.

Destination-specific sharing: verify the contract
A system share sheet is the least coupled option. Direct handoff to one service uses that service’s URL scheme, pasteboard format or SDK and can break when the service changes its policy. Check the destination’s current developer documentation and test on the iOS versions you support.
Instagram Stories example from the tutorial
The demonstrated flow converts the image to PNG, places it on the pasteboard under com.instagram.sharedSticker.backgroundImage, checks canOpenURL for instagram-stories://share, then opens the URL. Treat this as an example, not confirmation that the scheme and pasteboard contract remain supported today. If the app is absent or the check fails, fall back to the system share sheet and explain the available choices to the user.
Or skip the browser setup
When your source is a web page rather than an in-app view, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A direct call can produce an image that you then pass to your Swift sharing code:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
It supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are also accepted.

The image is blank or clipped
- Confirm the view has nonzero bounds and call
layoutIfNeeded()after constraints are applied. - Wait for remote images, custom fonts and asynchronous data before rendering.
- Check that your drawing rectangles fit inside the renderer’s size and that clipping paths are intentional.
Text overflows or looks different by locale
- Use measured text, flexible constraints and line wrapping rather than fixed single-line rectangles.
- Test long names, right-to-left scripts, Dynamic Type and missing translations.
- Keep important content inside a destination’s safe area.
The share sheet crashes or is missing on iPad
- Present on the main thread from a visible view controller.
- Configure
popoverPresentationControllersource information on iPad. - Pass a supported item type and test with the actual exported PNG or JPEG.
Direct social sharing does nothing
- Check that the destination app is installed and that
canOpenURLis configured correctly. - Verify the current destination documentation; archived examples may no longer match platform policy.
- Provide a system-share fallback instead of trapping the user in a failed handoff.
Template rendering fails
- Verify template and layer identifiers, required values, image encoding and authentication.
- Log provider errors without logging personal content or credentials.
- Define an offline or retry path if the SDK depends on a service.
Production considerations
Performance
Render at the final required pixel size instead of creating an unnecessarily large bitmap. Reuse renderer configuration for repeated outputs, downsample user photos before drawing, and move encoding work off the main thread. Keep UIKit presentation on the main actor.
Reliability and privacy
Generate the image only after the data is stable, retain the original values for accessibility, and avoid embedding secrets in pixels or URLs. If a third-party template service processes user images, review its retention and licensing terms before shipping.

Native rendering has no per-render service charge. A template provider may charge by render or require a license; verify current terms. Cache only deterministic outputs and invalidate when the template, locale, data or image changes. For web screenshots, inspect ScreenshotNeo’s billing headers so failed loads and cache hits are handled correctly in your accounting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I generate the share image without adding a template SDK?
Yes. Build a UIKit view or draw directly with UIGraphicsImageRenderer, obtain a UIImage, and pass it to UIActivityViewController.
Should I use PNG or JPEG for a social share card?
Use PNG when transparency or crisp text matters; use JPEG when a photographic image and smaller output are more important.
Is the Instagram Stories URL-scheme example guaranteed to work?
No. It is a tutorial demonstration. Verify Meta’s current integration requirements and keep the iOS share sheet as a fallback.
