How to Use Distraction-Free and Full-Screen Editing in WordPress

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the WordPress Block Editor, open the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner and select Distraction free to hide much of the editing interface. Choose Fullscreen mode separately if you also want to hide the surrounding WordPress administration interface. These are distinct settings, and you can use them together.

Turn on Distraction free in the Block Editor

  1. Open a post or page in the Block Editor.

  2. Select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of the editor.

  3. Select Distraction free. WordPress closes open sidebars and hides or fades interface controls; it does not remove your settings or editing tools. See the WordPress Distraction Free mode guide.

Write and add blocks without the usual controls

Press Enter to start another paragraph. To insert a heading, image, or other block, type / and then search for or select the block. The slash command is useful when the inserter controls are hidden.

To reveal the limited toolbar, move the pointer to the very top of the editor. It appears temporarily and fades when you move away. Keyboard focus at the top can also reveal controls. WordPress describes these behaviors in its Distraction Free mode guide and the Learn WordPress editor-modes lesson.

Distraction free, Fullscreen mode, and Spotlight mode

Mode What changes How it relates to the other modes
Distraction free Hides or fades editor controls and closes open sidebars. Move the pointer to the top of the editor to bring back a limited toolbar. A writing-focused view within the editor. Controls remain available.
Fullscreen mode Hides the surrounding WordPress administration interface. A separate setting that can be combined with Distraction free.
Spotlight mode Dims other blocks while keeping the active block prominent. A separate focus aid, not another name for either mode above.
Browser fullscreen Changes the browser or window display. Separate from the WordPress editor’s Fullscreen mode.

WordPress outlines the editor’s distinct view options in its Block Editor overview. To hide both the administration interface and most editing controls, turn on Fullscreen mode and Distraction free from the editor’s options menu.

Turn the modes off or use keyboard shortcuts

To turn off Distraction free, reveal the top toolbar, open the three-dot menu, and uncheck Distraction free. The mode’s keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + on Windows and Shift + Command + on Mac, according to the Distraction Free mode guide.

The Block Editor’s Fullscreen mode shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + Alt + F on Windows and Shift + Option + Command + F on Mac. These combinations can vary with platform or WordPress version; if one does not work, open the editor’s keyboard-shortcuts list. The current Block Editor keyboard-shortcuts reference lists the Fullscreen shortcut.

Know which WordPress editor you are using

Block Editor

The three-dot menu instructions above apply to editing a post or page in the Block Editor. The Distraction Free feature is documented for this editor, not the Site Editor.

Site Editor

The Site Editor is a separate interface for site-level design work. Do not assume the post-and-page Block Editor’s Distraction free setting is available there; WordPress’s mode guide says the feature does not work in the Site Editor.

Classic Editor

The Classic Editor has a separate legacy feature called Distraction Free Writing, with its own fullscreen control and historical shortcut. Its instructions are not interchangeable with the current Block Editor steps. See the Classic Editor Distraction Free Writing guide.
