Use a detergent made for pressure washers, dilute it exactly as both the machine manual and detergent label specify, and run the detergent injector only at low pressure—normally with the black soap nozzle. Apply the solution to a dry surface without letting it dry, rinse with clean water, then flush the detergent tube and injector after every use. Never put dish soap, bleach, acids, solvents, flammable liquids, abrasive fluids, or other household chemicals through the pump unless the machine manufacturer expressly approves them.
Why the correct setup matters
A pressure washer’s detergent system is usually a small chemical injector connected to the water outlet. It is not designed to accept every household cleaner. The pump, injector valve, seals, hose, filter, and spray equipment all have material and concentration limits set by the machine manufacturer.

Yard Force’s guidance is unambiguous: “Only use detergents specifically designed for pressure washers.” A product that cleans well in a bucket can still damage a pump or injector when it is concentrated, corrosive, solvent-based, abrasive, or incompatible with the machine’s seals.
Detergent injection also depends on pressure. In a typical siphon injector, low-pressure water moving past the soap barb creates suction that opens the valve and draws solution into the water stream. A high-pressure tip generally prevents that suction. This is why a machine can spray normally yet dispense no detergent when the wrong nozzle is installed.

What to check before adding detergent
Read both instructions
Start with the pressure washer manual and the detergent label. Confirm that the product is approved for pressure-washer use, identify whether it is a concentrate or ready-to-use formula, and follow the stated dilution. There is no universal detergent-to-water ratio: injector design, product concentration, tank arrangement, and model instructions differ.
Identify the chemical-feed connection
Pressure washers commonly use one of three arrangements:
- A built-in detergent tank that is filled with the prepared solution.
- A siphon tube inserted into an external container, with a small filter on the tube.
- A proprietary bottle or cartridge connection designed for a specific machine.
Use only the connection shown in the manual. Keep the tube filter submerged and make sure the tube is not kinked, split, or blocked.
Keep chemicals out of the water inlet
Do not pour detergent or another chemical into the garden-hose water inlet. RIDGID directs users to place chemicals in the dedicated chemical-injection port only. The inlet supplies water directly to the pump; adding an unapproved chemical there can expose pump components to the wrong concentration and bypass the intended injector.
Safe detergent procedure
- Prepare the solution. Check the machine manual and detergent label for compatibility and dilution. Mix a concentrate exactly as directed; do not estimate by eye. If the label supplies a final-use yield, use that information rather than copying a ratio from another product.
- Connect the feed system. Attach the detergent tank, bottle, or siphon tube as specified. Place the tube filter fully below the solution level. Check that the hose and filter are clear.
- Install the low-pressure soap setting. Fit the black soap nozzle, or set a variable nozzle to its lowest-pressure position if the manual identifies that as the detergent setting. Simpson states: “Only the soap nozzle will disperse soap; high-pressure nozzles will not.”
- Wet nothing yet. Begin with the target surface dry. RIDGID instructs users to spray detergent on a dry surface and prevent it from drying. A dry surface gives the solution time to work instead of immediately diluting it with runoff.
- Apply evenly. Hold the wand at a consistent distance and move in overlapping strokes. Work in manageable sections so you can rinse each section before the product dries. On a warm or sunlit surface, use smaller sections and shorten the dwell time.
- Allow the label-directed dwell time. Let the detergent remain wet for the time stated on its label. Do not allow foam or solution to dry on the surface. If drying starts, rinse that section with clean water before applying more detergent.
- Switch to a suitable rinse nozzle. Once the detergent has had its dwell time, replace the soap nozzle with the pressure and spray pattern appropriate for the surface. Rinse with clean water, working from the upper area downward where that approach suits the surface, and remove all visible residue.
- Flush immediately. Move the suction tube into a container of clean water, or fill the detergent tank with clean water as the manual directs. Refit the low-pressure soap nozzle and spray until the discharge is clear and no detergent remains in the line.
Flushing is part of the use cycle, not an optional cleanup step. Simpson explains that clean-water flushing prevents residue from hardening in the compact valve. A commercial manual specifies siphoning one gallon of water through the low-pressure detergent system after each use; treat that as a model-specific instruction, not a universal volume.

Why the black soap nozzle is required
The soap nozzle is designed to lower the outlet pressure enough for the injector to create suction. With the trigger pulled, water passes the injector’s soap barb, pressure drops locally, and detergent is drawn from the feed tube into the stream. Installing a high-pressure tip changes the water path and normally stops that siphoning.
Therefore, “no soap” after installing a narrow high-pressure tip is often normal operation rather than a failed pump. Return to the black soap nozzle or the manufacturer’s low-pressure detergent setting whenever you need to draw solution. After the detergent has been applied, change back to the appropriate rinse nozzle.

Which detergents are appropriate?
Choose a product whose label explicitly says it is for pressure washers and whose chemistry matches the surface you are cleaning. Evaluate the following characteristics before pouring anything into the machine:

Concentrate example
Kärcher describes its Multipurpose Cleaner as a concentrated pressure-washer soap that makes up to 40 gallons of ready-to-use detergent from one gallon, according to the manufacturer’s product page accessed in 2026. That yield applies to that product’s stated formulation; it is not a dilution rule for other detergents. The same manufacturer says the product is compatible with Kärcher Home & Garden pressure washers and pressure washers made by other brands, but you should still check your own machine manual and the product label.
Ready-to-use example
Kärcher also sells a pH-neutral, ready-to-use Universal Pressure Washer Soap for homes and vehicles. Because it is ready to use, do not add water unless its label specifically instructs you to do so. A ready-to-use product and a concentrate can look similar in a storage area but require different handling.

What must not go through the pump
Unless the exact pressure-washer manufacturer expressly approves a chemical, keep it out of the machine’s detergent system. Simoniz states: “Use only detergent/cleaning solvents designed for pressure washer use. Do not use bleach.” RIDGID warns that the following categories can damage the pump or related components:

- Acids and strong alkaline products
- Solvents
- Flammable materials
- Abrasive fluids or powders
- Industrial-grade solutions
- Ordinary household cleaners that are not labeled for pressure-washer use
Dish soap belongs in the last category. Even when it is mild on dishes, it can foam excessively, contain additives that leave residue, or have a concentration unsuitable for a pressure-washer injector. Use a purpose-made product instead.
Do not improvise with a bleach mixture, degreaser, acid wash, solvent, or homemade blend. The possible damage is not limited to the pump: seals, the compact injector valve, the feed hose, and the spray equipment can also be affected. If a surface requires a chemical that your manual does not approve, apply it by a separate method and keep it out of the pressure washer.
How to rinse detergent without leaving residue
Flush the line after every session
When the cleaning job is complete, stop drawing detergent and place the suction tube in clean water. Use the low-pressure soap setting so the injector continues to pull water through the same path. Run the machine until the discharge is clear and free of foam or scent.
Why immediate flushing matters
Detergent left in the injector can dry and harden in the compact valve. Simoniz warns that residual detergent in the pump can cause damage, while Simpson recommends running clean water through the soap nozzle until all signs of soap are gone. Flushing immediately is easier and safer than trying to dissolve a dried deposit later.

Store the machine only after the detergent path is clear
After flushing, follow the machine manual for shutdown, hose removal, and storage. Do not leave the siphon tube sitting in concentrated detergent, and do not store a tank with leftover solution unless the manual specifically permits it. Empty and rinse the container according to the detergent label.

The washer sprays water but no soap appears
- Confirm that the black soap nozzle or equivalent low-pressure setting is installed. A high-pressure nozzle normally will not draw detergent.
- Check that the tank or container contains the prepared solution and that the dilution is correct.
- Make sure the suction tube reaches below the liquid level and that its filter is submerged.
- Inspect the tube for kinks, cracks, loose connections, or an air leak.
- Remove blockages from the filter and detergent path using only the cleaning method specified by the manual.
After correcting the setup, run the injector at low pressure for enough time to fill the feed tube. A clear tube may initially contain air, so detergent may not appear immediately.
Soap stops when a high-pressure tip is installed
This is expected on many injectors. Reinstall the low-pressure soap nozzle to apply detergent, then use the high-pressure tip only for the rinse stage.
Foam or residue remains after rinsing
Rinse the surface again with clean water, then flush the detergent system longer at low pressure. Keep flushing until the discharge is clear. If residue persists, verify that the product was diluted correctly and that it was not allowed to dry on the surface.
Streaks appear on the surface
Work on a cool, dry surface, use overlapping passes, and prevent detergent from drying. Large sections, direct sun, hot surfaces, or pauses between application and rinsing can allow the solution to dry unevenly.

Pump-protection habits beyond detergent use
Do not confuse flushing with bypass cooling
Flushing removes chemical residue from the detergent path. It does not replace the separate operating precautions for the pump. On a gas pressure washer, do not leave the engine running in bypass with the trigger released for long periods. Follow the machine manual’s limit for trigger-off or bypass operation to avoid pump overheating.
Use only the pressure appropriate for the surface
Detergent loosens soil; pressure and spray pattern perform the rinse. Select the nozzle and working distance the manual recommends for the material. A detergent that is compatible with the machine can still damage a delicate surface if rinsed too aggressively.
Keep the chemical path clean
Do not allow a filter, tube, or injector opening to remain coated with dried product. Clean and store those parts as the manual directs, and replace damaged tubing or filters before the next use.
A practical decision checklist
- Product: The label says it is for pressure washers and identifies the correct dilution or ready-to-use status.
- Machine: The manual approves the product type and identifies the chemical-injection connection.
- Chemical path: The solution is in the detergent tank, siphon tube, or approved bottle—not in the water inlet.
- Nozzle: The black soap nozzle or equivalent low-pressure setting is fitted for application.
- Surface: The surface is dry and cool enough that the solution can remain wet during its label-directed dwell time.
- Rinse: The appropriate clean-water nozzle is used before the detergent dries.
- Flush: Clean water is run through the low-pressure detergent system until the discharge is clear.
- Shutdown: The machine is not left running in bypass beyond the manual’s stated limit.
Common questions answered
Can I use dish soap in a pressure washer?
Do not use ordinary dish soap unless the exact machine manufacturer expressly approves it. Use a detergent labeled for pressure-washer use instead.
Can I put bleach in a pressure washer?
No. Simoniz specifically says not to use bleach, and RIDGID lists bleach and chlorine products among chemicals that can damage the pump.
Which nozzle draws soap?
