How to Use Data Tables in Cucumber with Ruby

Put a Gherkin table beneath its step and receive it as the final argument in the matching Cucumber Ruby block. Choose a shape that suits the data and verify conversion methods against your installed version.

In Cucumber Ruby, put a Gherkin data table directly beneath the step that uses it. Cucumber passes the table to the matching step-definition block as its final argument. The exact methods for turning that argument into arrays, hashes, or other Ruby objects depend on the Cucumber Ruby version in your project, so check its versioned API before relying on a conversion call.

Write the table beneath the step

A table is part of the step, not a separate step definition. For example, a header row can describe records supplied to a scenario:

Feature: Register products

  Scenario: Add several products
    Given the following products:
      | name | price |
      | mug | 12.50 |
      | bottle | 18.00 |

The first row names the columns; the following rows contain product data. Keep the step text focused on the behavior and put scenario-specific values in the table.

Receive the table in a Ruby step definition

Ruby step definitions use blocks registered with Given, When, or Then. The table arrives as the block’s final argument:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Given('the following products:') do |table|
  # `table` is the multiline argument for this step.
  # Use the conversion API supported by your installed Cucumber Ruby version.
end

The expression in the definition must match the step text before the table. Cucumber matches a step to a registered definition and passes its arguments to the block. With a regular expression, capture groups become block arguments; the table remains the trailing multiline argument. See the step-definition documentation and the Cucumber reference.

Choose a table shape that matches the data

  • One-column table: useful when the step needs a list of values.
  • Header plus rows: useful for readable records, such as products with names and prices.
  • Two-column mapping: useful when each row represents a key and its value.

These describe the data’s shape, not a promise about a particular Ruby conversion method. The reference discusses table shapes and conversion, but its explicit collection signatures are mainly for JVM implementations. Do not copy Java List or Map examples into Ruby. For Ruby-specific methods, consult documentation matching the Cucumber Ruby version pinned in your project.

Convert table values deliberately

Table cells are scenario data. Decide whether your step should work with raw cell strings or with typed values and domain objects. A price such as 12.50, for example, may need explicit numeric conversion in application-level test code; do not assume that a table conversion automatically gives it the type your application expects.

Cucumber documentation describes data table types as a way to convert tables into objects, but the configuration examples available at the configuration page are Java/Kotlin examples rather than a Ruby hash-conversion recipe. Confirm the method and behavior against the installed Ruby API instead of inferring them from those examples.

Set up and run a Cucumber Ruby project

The Cucumber Ruby README identifies Cucumber for Ruby as a gem and shows a project structure with features/step_definitions and features/support/env.rb. A minimal block-style definition looks like this:

Given('this will pass') do
  @this_will_pass = true
end

Run the suite through Bundler with bundle exec cucumber. Keep Cucumber Ruby pinned in the project’s dependency lockfile so the step and table APIs used by the suite are tied to a known version.

Troubleshoot common data-table issues

  • The step is undefined: check that the definition matches the step text exactly, including punctuation, and that the definition file is loaded from the project’s feature structure.
  • The block receives an unexpected argument: remember that ordinary expression captures and the data table are distinct arguments; the table is last. Adjust the block’s parameters to match the expression and trailing table.
  • A conversion method is missing or behaves differently: verify the installed Cucumber Ruby version and use that version’s Ruby documentation. JVM collection examples do not establish Ruby method names.
  • Values have the wrong type: treat cell contents as input data and make the intended type conversion explicit in your step or application helper.
  • Rows are hard to interpret: add meaningful headers for records, or choose a one-column or key/value shape when that better expresses the scenario.
