How to Use Cypress should() Assertions

Chain Cypress .should() from a yielded subject to assert UI state that may change. Learn retry behavior, callback rules, subject handling, and troubleshooting.

In Cypress, chain .should() from a command that yields the value or element you want to check. Cypress retries linked queries and the assertion until it passes or the applicable timeout expires. Use a callback for repeat-safe assertions that must hold together; use .then() for one-time work.

Write a should() assertion

.should() is an alias of .and(). It cannot be called directly from cy; first run a Cypress command that yields a subject, then assert against it.

cy.get('.error').should('be.empty')
cy.contains('Login').should('be.visible')
cy.wrap({ foo: 'bar' }).its('foo').should('eq', 'bar')

Cypress supports four forms:

.should(chainers)
.should(chainers, value)
.should(chainers, method, value)
.should(callbackFn)

Examples of built-in chainers include checking visibility, text, length, attributes, and CSS. Choose the expected value from the behavior your application requires rather than copying a documentation example’s value.

cy.get('.left-nav > .nav').children().should('have.length', 8)
cy.get('#header a').should('have.attr', 'href', '/users')
cy.get('nav').should('be.visible')

Understand Cypress retry behavior

When a linked query or assertion fails, Cypress keeps retrying the query chain and assertion until they pass or the applicable timeout expires. The timeout is configurable and may also be overridden for a command, so a ten-second wait shown in an example is not a universal limit. A timeout option on the command sets the timeout passed to the assertion. One-time commands do not become retryable just because a .should() follows them.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This retry behavior is why .should() is useful for UI state that appears after asynchronous application work: express the required state, and let Cypress keep checking it rather than adding a fixed delay.

Use callback assertions for related checks

A callback lets you perform multiple synchronous assertions against the same refreshed subject. Cypress reruns it when an assertion throws, so keep it safe to execute repeatedly and free of side effects.

cy.get('[data-testid="random-number"]').should(($div) => {
  const n = parseFloat($div.text())
  expect(n).to.be.gte(1).and.be.lte(10)
})

Do not click, mutate state, perform one-time logging, or invoke Cypress commands inside a .should() callback. Put Cypress commands before or after it. The callback’s return value is ignored; the original subject continues down the chain.

Track the subject when chaining assertions

Most chainers yield the same subject passed to .should(), but some change its type. For example, have.css with a property yields the CSS value, and have.attr yields the attribute value. Check the chainer’s yield behavior before chaining a command that expects a particular subject type.

A passing assertion in the middle of a query chain creates a retry boundary: if later work fails, Cypress does not rerun the queries before that assertion. If the page rerenders, a later query chained from the earlier subject can encounter a detached DOM element. When later work needs a fresh element, start a new statement from the page root:

cy.get('.list').find('li').eq(2).should('contain', 'Header')

cy.get('.list')
  .find('li')
  .eq(2)
  .children('.child')
  .eq(3)
  .should('contain', 'child')

If the related checks can all be made safely in one callback, a single retrying .should(($subject) => { ... }) can also keep those observations together.

Choose between should() and then()

Use .should() when Cypress must keep checking until an assertion passes. Use .then() when a callback should run once after the preceding command settles, such as for one-time manipulation or follow-up work. A .then() callback does not retry the earlier query, so it is not a substitute when the UI may still be updating.

Method Retries? Callback guidance Best fit
.should() Assertions and linked queries retry until pass or timeout. For callback form, use repeat-safe synchronous checks; do not issue Cypress commands or cause side effects. Waiting for a UI condition or checking several conditions together.
.then() The callback runs once; it does not retry the earlier query. Use for one-time handling after the preceding command settles. Follow-up work that should happen once, not a condition that may become true later.

A common pattern is to wait for the required state with .should(), then perform one-time work in a following .then().

Diagnose common should() problems

  • “Cannot read” or invalid chain usage from cy: .should() needs a yielded subject. Start with a command such as cy.get(), cy.contains(), or cy.wrap().
  • The assertion keeps retrying and times out: Cypress has not observed the asserted condition before the applicable timeout. Check that the selector and expected state match the app, and whether the state can actually appear; adjust the command timeout only if the application legitimately needs longer.
  • A command in a callback is unsupported: Move Cypress commands outside the callback. The callback may run more than once, so keep it to synchronous observation and assertions.
  • A later query sees a detached element: A rerender may have replaced the subject after an earlier assertion passed. Start a new chain from the page root to fetch the current element.
  • A later chained command gets the wrong subject type: Some chainers yield a value such as an attribute or CSS property instead of the original element. Check the chainer’s yield behavior or start a fresh query when you need a DOM element.
  • A negative assertion passes unexpectedly: A broad negative check can pass in several unintended states. Assert the specific state the test requires, and add a positive condition where needed.

If your goal is to capture a page for inspection rather than test it with Cypress, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Does .should() always yield the same subject?

No. Most chainers preserve the subject, but some, including attribute and CSS checks, yield the checked value instead.
