Use CSS @font-face to load a web font, then add its declared family name to a font-family stack with fallback fonts. For a modern browser baseline, WOFF2 is a sensible format; set accurate weight and style descriptors, choose a font-display behavior, and confirm that the font’s license permits web use.
How to add a custom font to your website
Put the licensed font file in your site’s assets, define it with @font-face, and use the family name you declared in your CSS. For example, if the file is at /fonts/example-sans-regular.woff2 relative to the site root:
@font-face {
font-family: "Example Sans";
src: url("/fonts/example-sans-regular.woff2") format("woff2");
font-weight: 400;
font-style: normal;
font-display: swap;
}
body {
font-family: "Example Sans", Arial, sans-serif;
}
The name in the @font-face rule is a CSS family label; it does not have to match the font file’s filename. The browser requests the file from the URL in src and uses the face when it is available. The later font-family declaration asks for that face first, then provides fallbacks.
Match descriptors to the file
Declare the weight and style that the file actually represents. The example file is regular weight and normal style, so it uses font-weight: 400 and font-style: normal. If you have separate static files for bold, italic, or other weights, define another @font-face rule for each one, with its own source and accurate descriptors. Do not label a regular file as bold merely to make the browser choose it for bold text.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a dependable fallback stack
Include a fallback family so text remains readable if the custom file fails to load or does not contain a particular character. Use a suitable system font before the generic family, such as Arial, sans-serif. A fallback is especially important for multilingual text and symbols that may not exist in the custom font.
Choose a format and loading behavior
Use WOFF2 as a modern default
WOFF2 is efficiently compressed and broadly supported in modern browsers, making it a sensible default for current projects. MDN describes WOFF and WOFF2 as supported across major browsers, but support does not guarantee identical behavior in every browser or environment. Check the browsers your site needs to serve. Add an older format only when a concrete compatibility requirement calls for it; extra formats otherwise add files to maintain.

Set font-display deliberately
The font-display descriptor controls how text is rendered while the font is downloading and what happens if it arrives later. MDN documents auto, block, swap, fallback, and optional. The example uses swap, but there is no universally right value: consider whether you prefer immediate fallback text, a period where the custom face may not appear, or limiting a late change. Check the result on a slow connection as well as a warm, cached page.
Cover the characters your site uses
If a font is split into language or character subsets, make sure those subsets collectively cover the text your pages display. MDN describes unicode-range as a way to associate a face with specified characters. An incomplete set can make only some letters or symbols fall back to another font, creating visibly inconsistent text.

Hosted fonts or self-hosted files?
Both approaches can use the same basic @font-face model. With self-hosting, your CSS points to font files served from your site. A hosted service can provide the CSS and font resources; Google’s technical documentation describes a browser retrieving CSS and then downloading an appropriate font resource. Neither approach is a universal performance, privacy, or operational winner.
| Consideration | Self-hosted file | Hosted service |
|---|---|---|
| File and update control | You manage the files and their updates on your site. | The service supplies CSS and font resources; check its documentation and terms for how delivery and updates work. |
| Browser requests | The browser requests the font from your site’s configured URL. | The browser retrieves the provider’s CSS and then a suitable font resource, as described in Google’s technical documentation. |
| Decision to make | Consider your control and hosting requirements. | Consider the service’s terms and how its delivery fits your requirements. |
Choose based on the actual project: who controls the files, how updates and network requests are handled, what caching behavior you need, and what the provider’s terms permit. The available documentation does not establish one delivery pattern as best for every site.

Check the font license before publishing
A downloadable font file is not automatically cleared for website use. Check the license for the specific font and confirm that it permits web embedding, redistribution, and your intended delivery method. Desktop use does not necessarily authorize web use, and terms can differ between formats such as WOFF and TrueType or OpenType. MDN cautions that fonts can carry license conditions: “Fonts generally aren’t free to use without restrictions.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a font that does not appear
- Check the font URL. In your browser’s developer tools, inspect the Network panel for the font request. A wrong path, missing file, or server error prevents the face from loading; correct the URL or file deployment.
- Check cross-origin access. MDN notes a same-domain restriction for font files unless HTTP access controls relax it. If the font is hosted on another origin, inspect the console and the response’s CORS headers; configure access on the font server if required.
- Check descriptors. Confirm that the requested weight and style correspond to a declared face and that the face’s descriptors match its actual file. Define separate faces for separate static weights or styles.
- Check missing glyphs. If only particular letters or symbols look different, the file or subset may not include those characters. Verify coverage and, where relevant, that your subsets and
unicode-rangedeclarations include the text. - Check loading behavior. A fallback appearing briefly or remaining visible can be consistent with the selected
font-displaybehavior, a slow or failed request, or caching. Inspect the request result and test the chosen behavior under a slower connection.

For screenshots of a page that uses custom fonts, ScreenshotNeo takes a website URL and returns a screenshot or PDF with one API request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a way to install or serve fonts: the font still needs to load correctly on the page being captured. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
