How to Use Claude for Research, Writing, and Coding

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Use Claude’s web search for a focused, current fact; use Research when you need a multi-source investigation and synthesis; use extended thinking when the hard part is reasoning rather than retrieving new information. For writing, give Claude a defined reader, outcome, format, constraints, examples, and source material, then work through outline, draft, factual audit, structure edit, and style pass as separate stages. For coding, start with repository orientation and a no-edit plan, keep project rules in CLAUDE.md, review every diff, and run the project’s own checks.

This workflow keeps Claude useful without treating its first answer as proof. Citations help you verify claims, but you remain responsible for checking the cited page, date, scope, and whether it actually supports the sentence you plan to publish or ship.

Choose the Claude mode that matches the job

Claude has several ways to work, and choosing the wrong one is a common source of weak results. Decide first whether you need fresh information, broad investigation, difficult reasoning, repository access, or some combination.

Mode or product Best fit What to expect Important qualification
Web search A current fact or straightforward lookup Claude searches the web and returns an answer with citations. Check each cited page yourself, including its date and geographic or technical scope.
Research A broad, iterative investigation requiring several searches and synthesis Claude follows multiple leads and assembles a cited explanation. Anthropic documents Research for paid Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans; availability can change.
Extended thinking Hard reasoning, planning, or analysis where new web information is not the main need Claude spends more effort working through the problem. It does not substitute for current sources when facts may have changed.
Claude Code Understanding and changing a software repository An agentic coding tool that can inspect files, explain architecture, plan work, edit, and run checks. Use a documented workflow and verify plan, diff, and tests before accepting changes.
Anthropic API web search Developers building web-enabled Claude applications An API tool that lets an application request web search during a Claude interaction. Tool versions, availability, and prices change; consult current API documentation before budgeting.

Web search versus Research

Ask for web search when one or a few targeted lookups can answer the question: a regulation’s current wording, a product’s published limit, or the date of an event. Ask for Research when the assignment needs discovery across many sources, comparison of conflicting evidence, or a documented synthesis. A useful boundary is breadth: web search retrieves what you already know to look for; Research helps investigate what you do not yet know.

Research versus extended thinking

Research improves access to external evidence. Extended thinking improves the depth of reasoning over the information already available. For example, use Research to gather the latest policy documents, then use extended thinking to map their consequences for your project. If the question is a logic puzzle, design decision, or supplied-data analysis with no freshness requirement, extended thinking may be the more appropriate choice.

A reliable research workflow

1. Scope the question before you open Claude

Start with one decision-sized question rather than a subject heading. State the geography, date range, audience, and evidence standard. “What are the rules?” is underspecified; “For employers in Germany, what changed between January 2024 and June 2026, and which government sources establish the obligations?” gives Claude boundaries it can use.

  • Geography: country, state, market, or online jurisdiction.
  • Time window: publication cutoff and whether older background sources are allowed.
  • Audience: executive, engineer, student, consumer, or specialist.
  • Evidence standard: primary sources only, peer-reviewed studies, official statistics, or a wider source set.
  • Deliverable: briefing, comparison table, annotated bibliography, decision memo, or draft section.

2. Tell Claude how to investigate

Give Claude an explicit research brief. Ask it to distinguish facts from interpretation, record publication dates, flag uncertainty, and identify missing evidence. This makes the output auditable instead of merely fluent.

Investigate: [single, specific question].
Scope: [geography], [date range], audience [reader].
Use: primary sources first; label secondary reporting.
Return a table with claim, source title, publisher, publication date, relevant passage, and uncertainty.
Separate established facts, reasonable inferences, and unresolved questions.
Do not draft the final article yet.

3. Request a source table before prose

A source table exposes gaps early. Ask Claude to attach each important claim to a source and to say when a source does not establish the claim. For numbers, regulations, product limits, and quotations, this step is especially valuable because a polished paragraph can hide a weak citation.

4. Verify the highest-impact citations yourself

Anthropic’s Help Center says that web-search responses include citations and describes them as a way to verify sources. Treat that feature as a starting point, not an automatic fact-check. Open the cited page and check:

  • Whether the page actually contains the claimed fact, rather than a related statement.
  • Publication and update dates, including whether the information was superseded.
  • Definitions, exceptions, and geographic or edition limits.
  • Whether the number is a one-time allowance, a recurring limit, a sample, or a forecast.
  • Whether Claude’s wording overstates what the source says.

Keep only claims that survive this check. If a source is inaccessible, ambiguous, or outside the requested date range, label the uncertainty or find a better source rather than silently treating it as confirmed.

5. Synthesize with an explicit decision rule

When sources disagree, ask Claude to show the disagreement and rank the evidence. A useful prompt asks it to compare methodology, authority, recency, and scope, then explain why one source should carry more weight. Do not ask it to “make the sources agree”; disagreement may be the material finding.

How to use Claude to write a strong document

Give Claude a complete writing brief

Claude writes more reliably when the task includes the reader and the success condition, not just the topic. Supply the format, target length, voice, required sources, prohibited claims, and examples of the desired level of detail. Paste or attach source material and tell Claude which parts are authoritative.

Audience: [specific reader and level of expertise]
Goal: [what the reader should understand or do]
Format: [brief, report, tutorial, email, or article]
Length: [range or section budget]
Voice: [plain, formal, technical, conversational]
Must include: [facts, examples, headings, source links]
Must avoid: [unsupported claims, jargon, promises]
Source material: [paste text or provide files/URLs]
First return an outline and a list of missing evidence. Do not draft yet.

Use separate passes instead of one giant prompt

A staged process makes errors visible and makes revision cheaper:

  1. Outline: ask for the reader’s questions in the order they need answers.
  2. Evidence check: request missing facts, conflicting sources, and claims that need qualification.
  3. Draft: generate one section at a time if the document is long or technically dense.
  4. Factual audit: ask Claude to list every factual assertion and its supporting source, then mark unsupported wording.
  5. Structure edit: remove repetition, improve headings, reorder material, and identify missing steps.
  6. Style pass: adjust voice and readability without changing verified facts.

Keep source links attached to the claims they support during every pass. If links are collected in a separate bibliography, later edits can detach evidence from the sentence that needs it.

Ask for useful transformations

Claude can turn the same verified material into a briefing, checklist, table, executive summary, or plain-language explanation. State what must remain invariant: figures, definitions, dates, quotations, and caveats. This prevents a format change from accidentally broadening a qualified claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect against confident invention

Use instructions such as “say that evidence is insufficient when it is” and “do not infer a current price from an old announcement.” Ask for an uncertainty column in tables and a list of claims that require human confirmation. Fluency is not evidence; a sentence should earn its place through a source or through clearly labeled analysis.

Using Claude Code in an existing repository

Claude Code is an agentic coding tool designed to work with a repository rather than an isolated code snippet. The safest approach is to separate orientation, planning, implementation, and verification.

1. Establish a clean starting point

  • Work in the intended repository and branch.
  • Know how to restore or discard changes before giving an agent edit access.
  • Make sure dependencies and credentials are available through the project’s normal setup, not pasted into chat.
  • Identify the commands the project uses for build, test, lint, type-checking, and formatting.

2. Ask for repository orientation, not code

Begin by asking Claude Code to identify entry points, relevant files, architecture, build commands, and risks. Anthropic’s coding guidance specifically recommends providing relevant files, images, or URLs and explicitly telling Claude not to write code yet when you are planning.

Read the repository and explain:
- the application entry points and major components
- the files relevant to [feature or bug]
- build, test, lint, and type-check commands
- configuration and migration risks
- assumptions you need me to confirm
Do not edit any files. End with a proposed implementation plan.

3. Put durable conventions in CLAUDE.md

Create a CLAUDE.md file for project knowledge that should persist across sessions. Include architecture notes, package-manager commands, required checks, naming conventions, generated-file rules, migration procedures, and boundaries such as “do not modify vendor code.” Keep it concise and maintain it like source code: inaccurate instructions are worse than no instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Review the plan before permitting edits

Check that the plan identifies the smallest set of files, preserves existing interfaces, and includes tests or other verification. Ask Claude to state what it will not change. For a risky migration, request a staged plan with a reversible first step rather than authorizing a broad rewrite.

5. Make a small, observable change

Permit implementation only after you approve the plan. Ask Claude to explain each edit, update or add tests, and avoid unrelated formatting changes. Small diffs make both human review and rollback practical.

6. Inspect the diff yourself

Review changed files, deleted code, dependency updates, configuration changes, and generated artifacts. Look for behavior that the task did not request, hidden fallback logic, weakened validation, and secrets accidentally written to logs or source. If the diff is larger than expected, stop and ask for a narrower change.

7. Run the repository’s own checks

Run the documented build, tests, lint, and type checks in the same environment used by the project. Ask Claude to explain failures, but do not accept a claim that a check passed unless you can see the command and result. A passing test suite does not prove requirements that the suite does not cover, so perform a focused manual check for the changed behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Use Claude to explain failures, not conceal them

When a check fails, provide the exact output and ask for likely causes ranked by evidence. Request a minimal fix and a regression test. Keep the original failure in the conversation so the explanation remains tied to the actual environment rather than an imagined one.

Prompts that produce better results

For a current fact

Use web search to answer this one question: [question].
Limit results to [geography] and information published or updated since [date].
Cite the source for every material claim. Quote the relevant wording briefly,
then list any exceptions or uncertainty. Do not fill gaps with assumptions.

For a multi-source investigation

Use Research for a multi-source investigation of [question].
Start with primary sources, then use high-quality secondary sources for context.
Return: (1) an evidence table, (2) points of agreement, (3) disagreements and why
sources differ, (4) a dated conclusion, and (5) questions that remain unresolved.
Keep claims within each source's geographic, edition, and time limits.

For editing supplied prose

Edit the text below for [audience]. Preserve every verified fact, number, date,
qualification, and citation. Identify unsupported claims in a separate list before
rewriting. Then provide the revised version with clearer structure and no new facts.
Text: [paste text]

For a coding plan

Inspect the repository for [bug or feature]. Read only the relevant files first.
Explain the current flow, propose the smallest safe change, name the tests to add,
and list risks. Do not edit code until I approve the plan.

Plans, access, and changing features

Which plan includes Research?

Anthropic documents Research as available on paid Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Plan entitlements, regional availability, usage limits, and interface labels can change, so confirm the current plan page or in-product settings for the account you will use. Do not assume that access in one workspace, country, or date applies to another.

Claude Code availability

Claude Code is documented as an agentic coding tool, and Anthropic has also documented a web preview that can run multiple tasks on Anthropic-managed infrastructure. Treat both availability and eligibility as changeable. Before committing a team workflow, verify the current supported environments, account requirements, data controls, and repository-access model in Anthropic’s documentation.

API web-search pricing

An Anthropic web-search API announcement in 2025 recorded a price of $10 per 1,000 searches for that announced offering. That is a historical announcement figure, not a guaranteed current price. Check the current API pricing and tool documentation before estimating spend, and account for retries, multi-step agents, and any other model or infrastructure charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The answer sounds right, but I cannot verify it.”

Ask for a claim-by-claim evidence table, open the highest-impact citations, and remove or qualify anything the source does not establish. Require publication dates and source scope in the output.

“Research returned many links but no decision.”

Narrow the decision criterion and ask Claude to rank options against it. Request a short conclusion followed by the evidence and unresolved trade-offs. More sources do not automatically produce a useful recommendation.

“The draft repeats itself.”

Ask for a proposition map: one sentence for each distinct claim, the section where it belongs, and duplicates to delete. Then perform the style pass without introducing new facts.

“Claude Code changed too much.”

Stop, restore the working tree if necessary, and restart with a smaller scope. Require a no-edit plan, a file allow-list, and a stated non-goal. Review the next diff before allowing another step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Tests pass, but the feature is wrong.”

Check whether the tests exercise the new behavior, add a regression case, and perform a manual scenario check. Ask Claude to enumerate edge cases that the existing suite does not cover.

“The information is stale.”

Specify a cutoff date, use web search or Research for fresh retrieval, and ask Claude to flag pages whose update date is unclear. Do not reuse an old answer merely because its prose is polished.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do I need a current external fact, a broad investigation, or deeper reasoning over supplied material?
  • Have I stated geography, date range, audience, and evidence standard?
  • Did I request citations and a source table before drafting?
  • Have I personally checked high-impact numbers, rules, quotes, and limits?
  • For writing, did I separate outline, evidence audit, draft, structure, and style?
  • For code, did Claude inspect the repository and propose a no-edit plan first?
  • Is CLAUDE.md accurate about commands and conventions?
  • Did I inspect the complete diff and run the project’s own checks?
  • Have I verified current plan access, feature availability, and API pricing?

The operating principle

Claude is most dependable when you give it a bounded job, enough context, and a verification loop. Use web search for focused freshness, Research for breadth, and extended thinking for difficult reasoning. In documents, preserve the link between every important claim and its evidence. In repositories, make the agent explain before it edits, then treat the diff and test results as objects for human review. This division of labor captures Claude’s speed while keeping factual, editorial, and software decisions accountable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude research a topic without web access?

Yes, it can analyze material you provide and reason over its existing context, but that does not establish current facts. For time-sensitive information, use web search or Research and verify the cited pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I let Claude Code edit an unfamiliar repository immediately?

No. Ask it to map entry points, relevant files, commands, and risks, then produce a no-edit plan. Approve a narrow change only after reviewing that plan.

How can I stop Claude from inventing missing details?

Tell it to label insufficient evidence, require a claim-and-source table, and ask for an uncertainty list. Remove any sentence that cannot be supported or clearly marked as analysis.

Is a citation proof that a Claude answer is correct?

No. A citation is a verification lead. Open the source and check that its wording, date, definitions, and scope support the exact claim.
