This workflow gives Claude durable project context without pretending that a Markdown file can enforce technical restrictions. Enforcement belongs in controls such as hooks; CLAUDE.md explains how the project should be handled.

What /init does—and what it does not do
/init analyzes the repository in the current Claude Code session and creates a starting CLAUDE.md. Its draft can include discoverable facts such as build commands, test commands, project conventions, layout, and other patterns visible in the files. The command is intended to get a project’s persistent instructions started, not to infer every team decision.
If a CLAUDE.md already exists, /init proposes improvements instead of overwriting it. That behavior makes it suitable for refreshing an established file, but you should still inspect every suggested change before accepting it.

The official memory documentation describes these files as context: “Claude treats them as context, not enforced configuration.” A sentence in CLAUDE.md therefore cannot guarantee that a command will never run, a file will never change, or a secret will never be exposed. For a hard technical restriction, use an enforcement mechanism such as a PreToolUse hook, while keeping the rationale and normal workflow in the project instructions. See How Claude remembers your project.
Run the standard /init workflow
1. Start Claude Code at the repository root
Open a terminal, change to the directory that contains the project’s source and configuration, and launch an interactive Claude Code session:
cd /path/to/your-repository
claude
Starting in the right directory matters because the command needs to inspect the repository whose instructions you are creating. The setup documentation’s current workflow is to launch claude from the project directory; see Advanced setup.
Recommended Free Tools
2. Ask for initialization
At the Claude Code prompt, enter:
/init
Claude analyzes the available project material and writes a starting CLAUDE.md in the appropriate project location. It may identify package-manager commands, test and lint commands, important directories, naming patterns, and conventions already expressed in the codebase.
3. Read the entire generated file
Do not commit the draft without review. Check that every command is real, every path still exists, and every statement describes a rule rather than a coincidence in one file. Remove guesses, obsolete commands, and low-value details that Claude will not need in every session.
If the repository already had CLAUDE.md, compare the proposed improvements with the current version. Keep intentional local decisions even when they are not obvious from source files.
4. Add information the repository cannot reveal
Human review is where the file becomes useful. Add durable project knowledge such as:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Which build, test, lint, type-check, and formatting commands are required before a pull request.
- Architecture boundaries, including which package owns an API handler, database access, or shared component.
- Compatibility requirements, supported runtime versions, and generated files that must not be edited directly.
- Branch, review, release, migration, and deployment expectations.
- Security rules, such as where secrets may be read, which data must be anonymized, and which operations require approval.
- Decisions that repeatedly prevent mistakes, together with the reason they remain in force.
5. Save and share the right version
Put team guidance in a version-controlled project file so changes are reviewed alongside code. Commit it using the same review process as other project documentation. Keep personal preferences out of the shared file; those belong in a user-level or local scope described below.
What to keep in a useful CLAUDE.md
An always-loaded file should be short enough to stay readable and specific enough to guide a real task. Prefer an exact command, path, or check over a broad instruction such as “follow best practices.” The following categories usually provide the highest recurring value.

Commands with prerequisites and expected use
Record the command and when to run it. Include prerequisites when a clean checkout needs a particular runtime, service, environment variable, or generated artifact. “Run tests” is weak; “Run npm test after installing dependencies with npm ci” is verifiable. If a command is slow or only applies to a package, say so.
Architecture and boundaries
Name relationships that file names do not make obvious: where request validation occurs, which module owns persistence, which directory contains generated clients, or which package is the public API. A concise boundary prevents Claude from placing a correct-looking change in the wrong layer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Coding and naming conventions
State conventions a reviewer can check, such as “Use 2-space indentation,” a required naming pattern, import ordering, error-handling policy, or the approved way to access configuration. Avoid subjective wording such as “write clean code” unless you define what clean means in this repository.
Recurring workflows and corrections
Capture procedures that come up repeatedly: updating a schema and its fixtures together, regenerating a client after changing an API definition, or running a targeted integration suite before a full suite. If a correction has been repeated in reviews and is still valid, turn it into a concise rule.
What to move elsewhere
Do not turn the root file into a manual for every subsystem. Anthropic recommends moving multi-step procedures or guidance that applies only to one part of a repository into a skill or a path-scoped rule. Keep the root instructions focused on facts Claude should hold in every session, and let narrower guidance load only when relevant.
Illustrative structure
The following is an example shape for a Node project, not a universal project policy. Replace each item with the commands and paths your repository actually uses:
# Project instructions
## Required checks
- Install dependencies with `npm ci`.
- Run `npm test` for the default test suite.
- Run `npm run lint` before submitting a change.
## Layout
- API handlers live in `src/api/`.
- Database migrations live in `db/migrations/` and are append-only.
- Generated clients in `src/generated/` are regenerated; do not edit them by hand.
## Conventions
- Use 2-space indentation.
- Validate request data at the API boundary.
- Add or update fixtures when a schema changes.
## Workflow
- Ask for review before changing production deployment configuration.
- Never commit credentials or local environment files.
The value comes from accuracy and project-specific decisions, not from making the file long.
A practical review pass for the generated draft
Review the file in the same order that Claude will need the information. Start with commands: run each build, test, lint, and type-check command in a clean or representative checkout. Record prerequisites such as dependency installation, a required service, a runtime version, or an environment variable. If the command only applies to one package, include that path so a repository-wide instruction does not cause unnecessary work.
Next, inspect paths and ownership. Open every directory named in the draft and confirm that the stated owner still matches the architecture. A directory called generated, for example, may be safe to edit in one project and regenerated in another. Replace assumptions with an explicit rule and, where useful, name the command that regenerates the files.

Then separate observations from decisions. A file containing two-space indentation does not prove that every new file must use it; a team decision or formatter configuration does. Keep a convention when it is supported by project practice, tooling, or an explicit team choice. Delete speculative wording, duplicate rules, and details that help only with one unusual task.

Finally, ask a teammate to check the draft as they would check a pull request. Have them look for missing approval gates, release steps, migration requirements, security boundaries, and recurring review corrections. This short human pass is the part that turns repository inspection into useful project context.
Choose the instruction scope deliberately
Claude Code supports several locations so shared guidance, personal preferences, and organization policy do not get mixed together.
| Location | Purpose | Sharing and cautions |
|---|---|---|
./CLAUDE.md |
Project instructions at the repository root. | Best for team-shared guidance committed to version control. |
./.claude/CLAUDE.md |
Project instructions kept in the project’s .claude directory. |
Also team-shared when committed; use the location your project convention documents. |
~/.claude/CLAUDE.md |
Your preferences across projects. | Personal and cross-project; do not put repository-specific team rules here. |
./CLAUDE.local.md |
Your personal instructions for one project. | Keep it out of version control when it contains personal workflow details; the documentation recommends adding it to .gitignore. |
| Managed organization instructions | Guidance administered by an organization. | IT or DevOps controls the location and distribution; the official documentation does not prescribe one universal path. |
Use a project file for anything teammates must receive, a user file for preferences such as response style, and a local file for personal project-only behavior. Mixing these scopes makes reviews confusing and can cause a personal preference to look like a team requirement.
Standard initialization versus the new interactive flow
There are two documented ways to use /init. The standard command quickly produces or improves a CLAUDE.md. An optional environment variable enables a more interactive, multi-phase flow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Aspect | Standard /init |
CLAUDE_CODE_NEW_INIT=1 |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Analyzes the repository and creates or improves the instruction file. | Asks follow-up questions during several phases and explores the codebase with a subagent. |
| Artifacts considered | Primarily a starting CLAUDE.md. |
Can ask which artifacts to set up, including CLAUDE.md files, skills, and hooks. |
| Review before writing | You review the resulting file after generation. | Presents a reviewable proposal before writing the selected artifacts. |
| Best fit | A straightforward repository that needs a fast first draft or a refresh. | A complex project where you want to decide scope and related automation before anything is written. |
To enable the optional flow, set the variable before launching Claude Code, then run /init in the session:
CLAUDE_CODE_NEW_INIT=1 claude
The variable changes the initialization experience; it does not make the resulting instructions enforceable. You still need to review the proposal and the files it creates.
Handle existing instruction formats and imports
AGENTS.md
Claude Code can read AGENTS.md, but selection has configuration and version nuances. The documented default depends on whether a CLAUDE.md exists in or above the working directory. Direct AGENTS.md reading requires Claude Code version 2.1.277 or later, and some sessions may need an explicit import from CLAUDE.md.
If your repository already uses AGENTS.md, check what the current session selects instead of assuming every file is loaded. When you want the content shared through the project’s Claude instructions, Anthropic documents importing it from CLAUDE.md with an @AGENTS.md reference. Use /context afterward to verify the result.

Cursor, Copilot, and other instruction files
/init can incorporate existing Cursor rules and Copilot instructions. With CLAUDE_CODE_NEW_INIT=1, the documented sources also include AGENTS.md, Devin, Windsurf, and Cline instructions. Treat imported text as input for review: remove tool-specific assumptions, resolve contradictory rules, and keep one authoritative statement for each project decision.
Verify that Claude Code loaded the instructions
Use /context
In the active session, run:
/context
Look under Memory files. The listing shows which project and user instruction files Claude Code loaded for that session. This is the quickest way to catch a file in the wrong directory, a scope mistake, or an unexpected precedence issue.
Audit stale or conflicting instructions separately
/doctor prompt-audit is not another form of /init. It is a separate instruction audit that checks CLAUDE.md files, skills, and other configuration for outdated or conflicting guidance. The current slash-command documentation states that this audit requires Claude Code version 2.1.283 or later; see Extend Claude with skills.
Use /context to answer “Was this file loaded?” and the prompt audit to answer “Are these instructions stale or contradictory?” They solve different verification problems.
Test the instructions with a small, safe task
After checking /context, give Claude a low-risk task that exercises one or two rules. For example, ask it to identify the test command for a package, explain which module owns persistence, or propose a change without editing files. Compare its answer with the statements in CLAUDE.md. This exposes ambiguous wording without making a production change.
If the task reveals a gap, update the instruction rather than adding a long explanation to the prompt every time. Make the rule observable: name the command, path, file type, or approval condition. If the behavior must be blocked regardless of context, add or adjust a hook and document the normal workflow separately.
Troubleshoot common /init problems
The command creates little or no useful content
- Confirm that Claude Code was launched from the repository directory rather than a parent directory or unrelated shell location.
- Check whether the project actually records its commands and conventions in files Claude can inspect. Undocumented team decisions must be added manually.
- Give the generated draft a focused review instead of expecting it to infer deployment policy, approval gates, or business rationale.
An existing file seems unchanged
/init suggests improvements when a CLAUDE.md already exists; it is not designed to replace the file automatically. Compare the suggestions, then apply only the changes that remain correct.
Claude appears not to follow a rule
- Run
/contextand confirm the expected file appears under Memory files. - Check scope and location: a user file, local file, and project file serve different audiences.
- Rewrite vague instructions as observable actions with exact commands, paths, or conditions.
- For a restriction that must be technically blocked, implement an appropriate hook or other control; do not rely on Markdown context alone.
Instructions conflict
Search project, user, local, imported, and path-scoped files for competing statements. Keep the rule in the narrowest scope that owns the decision, remove obsolete copies, and run /doctor prompt-audit when your Claude Code version supports it.
The repository uses AGENTS.md
Check the version requirement and documented selection behavior, then inspect /context. If the file is not loaded as intended, use the documented @AGENTS.md import from CLAUDE.md and verify again.
Best Value
Maintain the file as the project changes
Review CLAUDE.md whenever scripts, package managers, directory boundaries, supported runtimes, or release procedures change. Delete rules that no longer apply; stale context is worse than missing context because it directs otherwise careful work toward obsolete commands or paths.
Keep statements atomic so a reviewer can verify them. Group related rules under descriptive Markdown headings, document the reason for unusual constraints, and move subsystem-only procedures into a skill or path-scoped rule. When a correction recurs in code review, decide whether it is durable enough to add; do not turn every one-off comment into permanent policy.
Finally, treat version numbers as compatibility facts. The documented thresholds for direct AGENTS.md reading and /doctor prompt-audit can change as Claude Code evolves, and the official pages are mutable. Recheck the current memory documentation, slash-command documentation, and setup documentation when updating a team workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

What does /init put in CLAUDE.md?
It creates a starting file from repository facts it can discover, such as build, test, lint, layout, and coding-convention information. It cannot reliably infer team intent, approval rules, or undocumented architecture decisions, so review and edit the draft.
Does /init overwrite an existing CLAUDE.md?
No. When a file already exists, /init suggests improvements rather than replacing it. Compare each suggestion with the current project policy before applying it.
How do I check that Claude Code loaded my instructions?
Run /context in the session and inspect the Memory files section. It lists the project and user instruction files loaded for that session.
Should team rules go in CLAUDE.md or CLAUDE.local.md?
Put shared project guidance in a committed ./CLAUDE.md or ./.claude/CLAUDE.md. Use ./CLAUDE.local.md for personal project-specific preferences and add it to .gitignore when appropriate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can CLAUDE.md prevent Claude from running a command?
No. Anthropic describes it as context, not enforced configuration. Use a technical control such as a PreToolUse hook when an operation must be blocked.
What is the difference between /context and /doctor prompt-audit?
/context shows which memory files loaded. /doctor prompt-audit checks instruction files, skills, and related configuration for stale or conflicting guidance; the documented command requires Claude Code 2.1.283 or later.
The Bottom Line
Use /init to create a repository-informed first draft, then make it concise, exact, and human-reviewed. Put shared rules in the project scope, verify them with /context, and use hooks—not Markdown context—for restrictions that must be enforced.
