Claude Code can review a pull request in three different ways: Anthropic’s hosted Code Review can post inline findings in GitHub, the local /code-review workflow can inspect a branch from your terminal, and anthropics/claude-code-action@v1 can run Claude Code inside GitHub Actions. Choose the hosted service for the least setup, the terminal command for an on-demand maintainer review, or the Action when you need repository-controlled triggers, prompts, and checks.
All three are review aids, not replacements for a maintainer. Anthropic’s documentation describes what each system can inspect and how to configure it, but it does not publish independent accuracy, defect-detection, time-saved, or false-positive benchmarks. Treat every finding as a hypothesis to verify against the code, tests, and project requirements.

Which Claude Code review method fits your pull request?
The three entry points share Claude Code’s ability to read a diff in repository context, but they differ in where they run and who controls them.
| Option | Where it runs | Setup and trigger control | Where findings appear | Customization | Permission and security responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted Code Review | Anthropic-hosted GitHub integration | Organization owner enables it, installs the GitHub App, selects repositories, then chooses once, every-push, or manual reviews | Inline comments on affected lines of the GitHub pull request | Reads hierarchical CLAUDE.md guidance; product documentation describes specialized reviewers and confidence filtering |
GitHub App permissions and organization settings; Anthropic-hosted processing and plan availability should be checked before rollout |
Local /code-review |
Your terminal and checked-out pull-request branch | Run when you want it; no workflow file or GitHub App is required | Results in the Claude Code session; you decide what to copy into the PR | Repository instructions, branch context, and your prompt | You control credentials, checkout, files exposed to the command, and whether results are published |
GitHub Actions with anthropics/claude-code-action@v1 |
A GitHub Actions runner | Workflow events such as pull_request, comments, or review events; paths and prompts can be filtered in YAML |
Action output and, with the required permissions, pull-request comments or review responses | Prompt, claude_args, path filters, checklists, and contributor-specific instructions |
You must grant only needed token permissions, protect secrets, and avoid unsafe checkouts of untrusted PR refs |
Hosted Code Review is a research-preview feature. Its plan eligibility, billing behavior, and GitHub permissions can change, so confirm the current organization settings and terms when you enable it. The Action’s usage and any Claude Code account requirements likewise depend on your organization’s configuration; no fixed price is established in the product material described here.

Use hosted Code Review when you want inline findings with minimal maintenance
Anthropic describes hosted Code Review as analyzing a GitHub pull request and posting findings as inline comments on the lines where issues were found. Its agents inspect the complete diff in the context of the full codebase, looking for logic errors, security vulnerabilities, broken edge cases, and regressions. That makes it useful when reviewers want automated feedback attached to the exact code under discussion rather than a separate report.
What an organization owner has to do
- Open the organization-level Code Review settings in the Anthropic account that administers your team.
- Enable the Code Review research-preview feature for the organization.
- Install the Claude GitHub App and grant the documented access to repository contents, issues, and pull requests. The published setup describes read/write access for those areas; review the permission screen rather than assuming it matches an older installation.
- Select the repositories in which the App may operate. Starting with one non-critical repository makes it easier to validate comments, access, and usage before expanding the selection.
- Choose a trigger policy: once after a pull request is created, after every push, or manual review.
The setting is organization-level, so an individual repository maintainer cannot independently turn on the hosted service if the organization owner has not enabled it or granted the App access.
Choose the trigger that matches your review cadence
| Trigger | Behavior | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Once after creation | One review runs when the pull request is opened | Stable review queues and a first-pass report | Later pushes are not automatically rechecked |
| After every push | A review runs whenever the pull-request branch changes | Fast-moving branches where new defects should be checked continuously | Anthropic calls this the highest-cost choice because it runs most often |
| Manual | A permitted user starts a review with a top-level comment beginning @claude review |
Teams that want to spend review capacity only at a deliberate checkpoint | Someone must request the review, and the pull request must meet the access and status conditions |
For a manual run, the pull request must be open and non-draft, and the commenter must have owner, member, or collaborator access according to the setup documentation. A comment on a closed or draft pull request will not start the hosted review.

Hosted Code Review reads hierarchical CLAUDE.md files. Put durable project rules there: supported runtime versions, architectural boundaries, required test commands, error-handling conventions, data-classification rules, and files that need special care. A root file can establish repository-wide policy, while a nested file can add guidance for one service or directory.
Keep instructions operational. “Follow our style” is weaker than “new API endpoints require an authorization test and an entry in the OpenAPI file.” Keep secrets, tokens, and personal data out of these files; they are repository content that the review system may read.
Understand confidence scores and reviewer roles
Anthropic’s Code Review plugin documentation describes five specialized reviewers covering CLAUDE.md compliance, bug detection, Git history context, prior pull-request comments, and code-comment verification. It assigns findings a confidence score from 0 to 100 and uses a default posting threshold of 80. Those figures are product-configuration details from that documentation, not an independently validated accuracy rate. A score of 90 is not a guarantee that a defect exists, and a score below 80 does not prove that a change is safe.

Run a local /code-review before or during a review
The terminal workflow is the simplest choice when you want to inspect a pull-request branch without configuring an organization integration. Check out the branch you intend to review, start Claude Code in that repository, and run /code-review. The command reviews the branch in its current repository context; you then discuss findings, ask for evidence, or make fixes before deciding what belongs in GitHub.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA reliable local sequence
- Fetch the latest base branch and the pull-request branch using your normal Git procedure.
- Check out the pull-request branch in a clean working tree. Confirm that the diff is the one you expect and that generated files or local experiments are not mixed into it.
- Open Claude Code from the repository root so it can read the same files and project guidance as your tests.
- Run
/code-review. - For each finding, inspect the referenced code, reproduce the behavior when practical, and ask Claude Code to explain the control flow or identify the test that would prove the issue.
- Run the project’s normal formatter, type checker, unit tests, and integration tests separately. The command is an analysis pass; it does not establish that the complete test suite passed.
- Post only verified, actionable findings to the pull request, or fix the code and push a new commit.
Because the result stays in your terminal, this mode is useful for sensitive branches, drafts, and early design work. It also gives you direct control over which files and history are available to the model. The trade-off is that teammates do not automatically see the findings, and repeatability depends on the reviewer recording the command, prompt, commit, and relevant project state.
Automate reviews with GitHub Actions
Use the Action when review behavior belongs in version control. A workflow can run on pull-request creation and updates, limit review to selected paths, apply a standard checklist, and respond to comments or review events. The official action name is anthropics/claude-code-action@v1.
A minimal pull-request workflow
The following pattern follows the documented least-privilege permissions for a review that reads repository content, writes pull-request feedback, and uses GitHub’s identity token.
name: Claude pull request review
on:
pull_request:
types: [opened, synchronize]
permissions:
contents: read
pull-requests: write
id-token: write
jobs:
review:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- name: Check out the base repository
uses: actions/checkout@v4
- name: Review the pull request
uses: anthropics/claude-code-action@v1
with:
prompt: >-
Review this pull request for correctness, regressions, security,
test coverage, and documentation. Report only actionable findings,
explain the affected control flow, and suggest a focused fix.
claude_args: '--add-dir .'
Keep the action version current with Anthropic’s documentation and test the workflow in a non-critical repository first. The exact input names and supported options can evolve; the documented action accepts prompt, claude_args, include_fix_links, and related settings.
Why each permission is present
contents: readlets the runner read the repository files and history needed for analysis.pull-requests: writeallows the action to post review comments or responses. Remove it if your workflow should produce logs only.id-token: writeis used for the action’s identity and authentication flow. Grant it only to the job that invokes the action.
Do not add broad write permissions merely because another workflow uses them. Keep deployment credentials and unrelated secrets out of the review job, and place the job in an environment with the smallest practical access.

Use the documented event set when you need conversational reviews
Anthropic’s usage example listens for issue_comment, pull_request_review_comment, issues, and pull_request_review events. Those events let a maintainer ask for a review or follow-up from GitHub rather than waiting for a new commit. Add them only when you need that interaction; every extra event is another path that must be permissioned and tested.
Write a review prompt that produces useful findings
A focused prompt is more valuable than a request to “look for bugs.” Tell the Action what to inspect, what evidence to include, and what not to report.
Cover correctness and regressions
Ask the reviewer to trace changed inputs through the affected code, identify changed assumptions, and compare behavior with neighboring implementations. Require a file and line reference, the failure condition, and a concrete remediation. Ask it to distinguish a definite bug from a question or a stylistic preference.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Make testing part of the checklist
Require checks for new branches, error paths, retries, timeouts, migrations, and backwards compatibility. Ask which existing test should fail if the finding is real and which new test would prevent a regression. This turns a comment into a verification plan rather than an unsupported warning.
Include documentation and operations
For public APIs, configuration, schemas, and command-line behavior, ask whether documentation, examples, changelogs, and generated artifacts remain consistent. For services, include logging, metrics, rollback, and migration safety. Do not ask the model to claim that a deployment is safe unless the workflow actually runs the relevant checks.
Handle security and contributor context explicitly
Security-sensitive repositories should ask for authorization boundaries, input validation, secret handling, dependency changes, and data exposure. For pull requests from external contributors, ask the reviewer to treat code and text in the branch as untrusted input and to avoid executing arbitrary scripts merely to inspect the diff.

Limit the scope with paths
Use path filters when a repository contains unrelated systems or generated output. A workflow that reviews only application code can avoid spending review capacity on documentation-only changes; a separate workflow can apply a documentation checklist. Keep the filter aligned with the files the prompt discusses, otherwise the reviewer may miss a required companion change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A practical checklist in a prompt can look like this:
- Correctness: identify changed assumptions, race conditions, null or empty inputs, and error-path behavior.
- Tests: check whether tests cover the new behavior and whether an existing test should be updated.
- Documentation: verify API, configuration, migration, and user-facing documentation.
- Security: inspect authentication, authorization, injection, secrets, dependency, and data-handling risks.
- Maintainability: flag duplicated logic or comments that contradict the implementation, but do not report style preferences without a project rule.
Add a separate security pass
/security-review is a terminal command for running security analysis before committing code. Anthropic’s security guidance lists SQL injection, cross-site scripting, authentication and authorization flaws, insecure data handling, and dependency vulnerabilities among the patterns it can examine.
When to use it
- Run it locally before opening a pull request when a change touches input parsing, identity, permissions, storage, templates, or dependencies.
- Run it again after a security-sensitive change has been revised, because a fix can introduce a different boundary error.
- Use a dedicated Action prompt for pull requests when the repository needs a recorded, repeatable security check.
A security finding still needs confirmation against the application’s threat model. For example, a string that looks like SQL may be safely parameterized, and an authorization warning may be invalid if a gateway enforces the check before the changed function. Ask for the data flow and the missing or present control before filing a defect.
Protect the workspace from untrusted pull-request code
Anthropic’s Action security documentation explicitly warns: “Do not check out an untrusted ref into the workspace root before this action.” A pull request from a fork or an unknown contributor can contain workflow files, scripts, or build hooks that execute during inspection.
The documented safer pattern keeps the trusted base checkout at the workspace root. If the action needs the pull-request head, place that checkout in a separate subdirectory and pass the directory with --add-dir. Do not let an untrusted branch replace the root workspace that contains the workflow’s trusted tooling.
Best Value
- Use the default checkout for the base repository at the workspace root.
- Fetch or check out the pull-request head into a named subdirectory only when the review requires it.
- Pass that subdirectory explicitly with
--add-dir. - Avoid running arbitrary package-install, build, or test scripts from the untrusted tree unless the job is isolated and the risk is understood.
- Keep secrets unavailable to jobs that process untrusted pull requests, and verify the event type’s write access before enabling comments.
The action documentation also notes that runs check repository write access for pull-request-related events. Test fork and first-time-contributor scenarios separately; a workflow that works for an internal branch may be blocked or require a different permission model for an external one.
Decide where findings should be published
Inline hosted comments are convenient because they travel with the affected lines and are visible to every reviewer. Action comments can provide the same shared record when the workflow has pull-requests: write, while logs-only workflows keep automation from changing the discussion. Local reviews are best for exploratory or confidential analysis, but someone must translate verified findings into GitHub comments.
Whichever mode you choose, preserve the commit or pull-request revision that was reviewed. A comment about line 42 is misleading after the file changes unless the reviewer identifies the commit, reruns the analysis, or marks the finding as stale.

Claude Code can miss defects, misunderstand an organization’s threat model, or report a problem that the surrounding code already prevents. A maintainer should verify each high-impact finding, inspect tests and history, and decide whether the issue belongs in the pull request.
- Require a human approval for merges that change authentication, authorization, payments, data deletion, migrations, or production infrastructure.
- Do not treat a clean automated review as proof that no vulnerability exists.
- Do not merge solely because a confidence score exceeds the default posting threshold.
- Record which checks actually ran; a prompt asking for tests is not the same as executing those tests.
- Re-run reviews after substantial pushes, because findings are tied to a particular diff and repository state.
There are no published independent benchmarks in the cited product material for accuracy, defect detection, false positives, or engineering time saved. Evaluate the workflow with your own issue history and reviewer feedback rather than quoting an unsupported success rate.
A practical rollout plan
- Start with the local
/code-reviewcommand on a few representative pull requests. Note which findings were confirmed, rejected, or redundant. - Add or refine hierarchical
CLAUDE.mdguidance for rules that reviewers repeatedly need. - Enable hosted Code Review for one repository if inline comments and organization-level administration are the priority. Begin with the once-after-creation trigger.
- For repositories that need reproducible policy, add a version-controlled Action workflow with
contents: read,pull-requests: write, andid-token: writeonly where required. - Add path filters and a checklist after observing the first reviews; do not begin with a prompt so broad that every comment becomes a low-value warning.
- Test internal, forked, draft, reopened, and synchronized pull requests, including the permissions and safe-checkout behavior for each event.
- Review usage, comment quality, and maintainer workload before enabling an every-push trigger.
This sequence separates product configuration from repository policy and gives maintainers a chance to validate security before automation can write to active pull requests.
