Use Claude Artifacts as a conversational prototyping loop: describe a user problem, let Claude clarify the requirements, ask for an interactive artifact, test it yourself, and request focused revisions. Publish a selected version for feedback or export its code when the concept needs a full development environment. Artifacts are excellent for demonstrations and early validation, but production applications still need deliberate security, data storage, API-key management, and infrastructure.
What Claude Artifacts are—and what they are good for
Anthropic describes an Artifact as “a self-contained piece of code that Claude creates during conversations.” In practice, the artifact appears alongside the conversation as a separate, usable result rather than as a code block you must assemble manually. Depending on your request, it can be a website, code, diagram, SVG, document, or interactive React component.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That makes Artifacts useful when the question is, “Will people understand and use this interaction?” rather than, “Have we finished the production system?” You can turn an idea into a clickable flow, demonstrate it to stakeholders, and collect reactions before committing to a larger build. The conversation remains the design workspace: requirements, implementation, testing notes, and revisions stay together.
| Artifact type | Useful prototype outcome | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Website or interactive React component | Clickable screens, forms, quizzes, dashboards, or simulations | Navigation, states, validation, responsive layout, and keyboard behavior |
| Code | A starting implementation that can be inspected or copied | Dependencies, assumptions, security-sensitive logic, and maintainability |
| Diagram or SVG | Visual explanation of a workflow, system, or information structure | Labels, edge cases, and whether the visual matches the intended user task |
| Document | Structured content, instructions, or a specification to test with users | Completeness, reading order, and the decisions the document is meant to support |
Anthropic’s general explanation of the feature and its supported formats is available in What are artifacts and how do I use them?.

Prepare a clear brief before you ask for an artifact
A vague request usually produces a visually plausible but poorly targeted demo. Start with the person, task, and success condition. You do not need to know the implementation language; you do need to know what the user should accomplish.
Define the user and context
- Who will use it? State role, experience level, device, and relevant constraints.
- What situation brings them to the prototype?
- What information or action is available at each step?
- What must be possible with a keyboard, touch input, or a small screen?
Describe the task and success signal
Write the primary task as an observable action, such as “A learner chooses an answer, receives an explanation, and starts the next question.” Define success in terms of behavior: the user reaches a confirmation state, understands a recommendation, or completes a short sequence without help. Include what should happen after an invalid input, a skipped step, or a restart.
Give Claude permission to interview you
Anthropic recommends starting with the problem and allowing Claude to ask clarifying questions. Tell it to identify missing requirements before building. For example:
We are exploring a reading-practice tool for learners aged 9–11. The user should read a short passage, answer three questions, and see an explanation after each answer. Before building, ask me about the learning goal, accessibility needs, scoring, and what should happen when an answer is skipped.
Answer those questions in the conversation. Treat the resulting answers as the brief you will use for the build request.
Build the first interactive version step by step
1. Request a deliberately small first artifact
Once the requirements are clear, explicitly ask Claude to build the artifact. Name the screens or states, the controls, and the behavior you want to exercise. Ask for a self-contained prototype and realistic sample data, not a production claim.
Build a self-contained interactive React artifact for that reading tool. Include a welcome state, one passage, three question states, immediate explanations, a progress indicator, a restart control, and a completion screen. Use sample content only. Keep the layout usable on a phone and with a keyboard.
Start with the smallest flow that can answer your design question. A single complete journey reveals more than ten unconnected screens. You can add secondary paths after the main interaction works.
2. Read the artifact as a user, not as its author
When the artifact opens, follow the intended path without editing code first. Look for the first decision a user must make, whether the current state is obvious, and whether each action produces a visible result. Note exact symptoms: a button that appears inactive, a message that is too long, a progress indicator that does not advance, or a layout that clips on a narrow viewport.

Inspect the implementation when a behavior is surprising. The artifact view supports reviewing and copying code, which helps you distinguish a requirement problem from an implementation problem. Do not assume that readable code proves the interaction is correct.
3. Exercise normal and edge-case interactions
Click every control and try the cases a first-time user will encounter:
- Submit the expected input and confirm the next state is reachable.
- Leave required fields empty, enter unusually long text, and use unexpected characters.
- Use back, restart, and repeated-submit actions.
- Resize the window or use a small screen to expose wrapping and overflow.
- Navigate with the keyboard and check focus order, visible focus, and readable feedback.
- Try a path where the user changes an earlier answer or abandons the flow.
This testing is practical validation, not a guarantee of correctness. Anthropic documents real-time interaction and conversational debugging; it does not claim that an Artifact is automatically tested or bug-free.
4. Ask for one focused revision at a time
Describe the observed problem and the desired outcome in the same message. “Be specific about which part you want to change,” Anthropic advises. A useful request names the component, condition, and acceptance test:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On the question screen, the submit button is hard to see against the background. Increase its contrast, make it at least 44px tall, and keep it disabled until an option is selected. Do not change the scoring logic. After the change, show the selected option and the explanation in separate states.
Other productive revision requests include enlarging a control, changing the color scheme, limiting response length, adding a timer, clarifying an error message, or preserving a user’s selection when they move back. After each revision, repeat the interaction that exposed the problem and then run a short regression pass through the main flow.
5. Use the available fix action when something breaks
If a revision introduces an error, state what you did immediately before the failure, what you expected, and what appeared instead. If the artifact view offers a fix action, use it and include the smallest reproducible description. Avoid asking for a broad “make everything work” rewrite; it can remove working behavior while addressing an unrelated symptom.
6. Branch instead of destroying a promising direction
When you want to test a materially different idea, edit an earlier message to create another conversation branch. Anthropic documents this as a way to retain the original version while exploring an alternative. Branch for decisions such as a wizard versus a single-page form, a timer versus no timer, or a different information hierarchy. Keep a short note describing the hypothesis each branch is testing so feedback can be compared fairly.

Add AI behavior only when the prototype needs it
Enable the documented AI-artifact setting
Anthropic’s AI-artifact guidance describes enabling a setting labeled “Create AI powered artifacts” and then asking Claude to add text-based completion capability. The dedicated prototyping guidance describes this feature as beta. Labels, eligibility, and availability can change, so verify the current controls in your account before giving users instructions.
Ask for a narrowly defined AI action and specify its boundaries:
Add an AI-powered feedback action that accepts the learner’s short answer and returns one concise hint. Limit the response to two sentences, show a loading state, and display a clear fallback message if no response is available. Keep the rest of the prototype unchanged.
Understand the capability limits
The Artifacts documentation describes a limited text-based completion API. It also states that artifacts cannot make external API calls to third-party services or use persistent storage. Consequently, an AI prototype can demonstrate a bounded text interaction, but it cannot by itself become a dependable integration with your database, payment system, private model endpoint, analytics platform, or other external service.
Plan the interaction around those limits. Use sample records or temporary in-session state for a concept demonstration, and make the boundary visible in the interface. Do not present generated text as a verified fact, and do not place secrets in client-visible artifact code.
Explain access and usage to testers
Anthropic says usage for an AI-powered shared Artifact is attributed to the user’s Claude account and its limits, rather than charged to the creator for other users’ usage. That does not mean unlimited access: account limits still apply. Some advanced AI-powered functions require the tester to sign in, even when basic public functionality can be used without an account.
Publish and share the version you actually intend to show
Select a version before publishing
Artifacts can accumulate several iterations. Choose the version that passed your intended interaction checks, then publish or share that selected version. A shared link is not automatically a pointer to every future draft; Anthropic’s sharing documentation says published links correspond to a selected version.
Choose the right audience
| Audience | Access described by Anthropic | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible consumer account, public artifact | People with the link can view and use basic functionality; some advanced features require sign-in. | Tell reviewers which parts work without an account and which require Claude sign-in. |
| Claude for Work artifact | Restricted to the organization and requires a work account. | Use this for internal review, not for an external public test. |
| Unpublished artifact | Not available through the public link after it is unpublished. | Remove access when a link should no longer be usable, and distribute the replacement version deliberately. |
For public artifacts, Anthropic states that anyone with the link can access the creation until you un-publish it. Treat the URL as shareable access, not as a private invitation. Do not include confidential data, credentials, or personal records in a public prototype.

Embed only after checking eligibility and domains
The sharing guide also describes embedding a publicly shared artifact with generated embed code and an allowed-domains setting. Interface labels and plan eligibility are changeable. Before embedding, confirm that your account exposes those controls, add only the domains you control, and test the embedded experience separately from the direct link. A direct-link prototype can work while an iframe is blocked by a policy, layout, or authentication requirement.
For the official sharing rules, see Discovering, publishing, customizing, and sharing artifacts and Use artifacts to visualize and create AI apps, without ever writing a line of code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCollect feedback that improves the next iteration
Give reviewers a task, not a request to “play around.” For example: “Complete the three-question flow, then tell us where you expected a different explanation.” Record the screen or state, the action taken, the observed result, and the proposed change. Separate usability findings from feature requests; a confusing button label should be fixed before adding another mode.
- Observed behavior: what the tester did and what appeared.
- Expected behavior: what the task required at that point.
- Impact: blocked, slowed, misunderstood, or merely undesirable.
- Change request: one concrete adjustment with an acceptance condition.
Feed the highest-impact finding back into Claude as a focused revision. Keep the branch or published version that produced the feedback so you can tell whether a change actually solved the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Export the code or graduate to a fuller development setup
When exporting makes sense
Use the artifact view’s code inspection, copy, and download capabilities when another developer needs to review the implementation, when the prototype must be placed under version control, or when you are ready to add tests and integrations elsewhere. Preserve the conversation or a written brief alongside the exported files so the intended states and sample data are not lost.
Before treating exported code as a foundation, check its assumptions: package versions, data shape, error handling, accessibility, authentication boundaries, and whether any values are hard-coded for demonstration. Replace sample content and temporary state deliberately rather than silently carrying them into a real application.

- The product needs durable user records, synchronized state, or audit history.
- It must call third-party services or private APIs.
- It handles secrets, payments, personal information, or organization-level permissions.
- It requires background jobs, scheduled work, analytics pipelines, or interleaved scripts.
- Many users need predictable performance, independent deployment, monitoring, and rollback.
- The team needs automated tests, code review, dependency control, and a repeatable build.
Anthropic’s prototyping guidance points toward proper API-key management and more robust infrastructure as work advances toward production. It also notes technical limitations in Claude.ai, including the lack of interleaved scripts. The documentation does not prescribe a particular hosting provider, framework, or production architecture; choose those based on your team’s requirements rather than assuming an Artifact supplies them.
Best Value
Decide whether to keep iterating in Artifacts or move on
| Question | Stay in Artifacts when… | Move to a fuller build when… |
|---|---|---|
| Speed of learning | You need a quick, testable interaction and frequent conversational revisions. | The interaction is understood and the main work is reliability, scale, or maintainability. |
| AI behavior | A bounded text completion is enough and testers can operate within account limits. | You need a private model, tool calling, external data, deterministic safeguards, or custom cost controls. |
| Data | Sample or temporary in-session data demonstrates the concept. | Records must persist, synchronize, be backed up, or meet retention and deletion requirements. |
| Integrations | No external service is required for the test. | The flow depends on third-party APIs, webhooks, authentication providers, or internal systems. |
| Audience | A small public test or organization-only review is sufficient. | You need granular roles, service-level guarantees, regional controls, or a carefully managed release. |
| Security and operations | All content is safe for the chosen audience and no secrets are involved. | Production security, observability, automated delivery, incident response, or compliance is required. |
The decision is not about abandoning the prototype. Export the useful interaction, preserve what you learned, and rebuild the parts that require infrastructure the Artifact environment does not provide.
Troubleshoot common prototype problems
The artifact looks polished but does not answer the user question
Return to the task and success condition. Remove decorative screens and ask Claude to make the critical decision or action visible in the first state. Add realistic sample content only where it helps a tester make that decision.
A revision fixed one control and changed another
Identify the unintended change, name the behavior that must remain unchanged, and request a targeted correction. Re-test both the newly changed control and the preserved path. Branch from the last known-good version if the conversation has drifted.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AI responses are too long or inconsistent
Specify a response limit, tone, allowed input, loading state, and fallback behavior. Test empty, ambiguous, and unusually long inputs. Keep the feature framed as a prototype capability, because account limits and the documented text-completion scope still apply.
A tester cannot use the shared link
Confirm that you published the intended version and that the artifact has not been unpublished. Check whether the tester is accessing an organization-only Work artifact, or whether the requested advanced feature requires sign-in. If embedding, verify the allowed-domain configuration and test the direct public link separately.
The prototype needs saved data or an external service
Do not attempt to hide the requirement inside the Artifact. The documented environment does not provide persistent storage or third-party API calls. Replace the dependency with clearly labeled sample behavior for the demonstration, or export the concept and implement the integration in an environment designed to hold credentials and data.
A practical completion checklist
- The user, task, context, and success condition are written down.
- Claude clarified missing requirements before the first build request.
- The main journey works from start to finish with realistic sample inputs.
- Empty, invalid, repeated, restart, keyboard, and narrow-screen cases were exercised.
- Each revision had a specific acceptance condition and did not erase required behavior.
- Alternative ideas were branched rather than overwriting the last useful version.
- AI behavior, if present, states its limits and has loading, error, and length boundaries.
- The selected version—not an accidental draft—was published or shared.
- Reviewers know whether they need a Claude account and whether access is public or organization-only.
- No secrets, personal records, or confidential material are present in a shareable artifact.
- Exported code has been reviewed before any production use.
- Persistent data, external APIs, API keys, security controls, and operational requirements have an explicit next-step plan.
