Open the page, choose Open in reading mode, set View to Side panel, then adjust typography or start spoken playback. The source page stays available for checking context, links, figures, or controls, while the panel presents the extracted text in a calmer layout.
This workflow is intended for text-heavy pages. It is not a universal page reader: Chrome warns that Reading Mode is unavailable on some websites and can behave unexpectedly on interactive or media-heavy content.

What Chrome Reading Mode does for studying
Reading Mode is a simplified text view built into desktop Chrome. It extracts the readable portion of a web page and presents it with controls for typeface, text size, color theme, line height, and letter spacing. Desktop Reading Mode can also show or hide links and images, and it includes a Play control for spoken reading.

The Side panel is a display choice inside Reading Mode, not a separate reader that opens a second browser tab. In Side panel view, the extracted text occupies a narrow, resizable area while the original page remains open in the main browser window. That arrangement is useful when studying because you can read without losing the source page, then switch back to the original layout when you need an interactive element or content that was not extracted.

Chrome also offers a full-screen Reading Mode view. Full screen removes competing page content and gives the text more horizontal space; Side panel preserves the source page and is usually better when you need to cross-check material.
How do I open Reading Mode in Chrome?
Use any of these documented desktop entry points. The page must be open in Chrome, and Reading Mode must be available for that site.
- Context menu: Right-click in the page and select Open in reading mode.
- Address bar: If Chrome displays the Reading Mode icon in the address bar, select it.
- Chrome menu: Open More (the three-dot menu), choose More tools, and select Reading mode.
- Keyboard shortcut: On macOS, press Command + Option + R. On Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, press Alt + Shift + R.
If a shortcut does something unrelated, another application may already be using that key combination. Use the context-menu, address-bar, or menu route instead of changing unrelated system shortcuts.

How do I put Chrome Reading Mode in the Side panel?
- Open Reading Mode on the text page.
- Open the Reading Mode settings menu.
- Under View, choose Side panel instead of Full screen.
- To give the text more room, point to the panel’s left border and drag it to the left.
Chrome saves the selected view, so later pages can open in the same arrangement. If the Side panel itself is on the wrong side of the browser window, open Settings > Appearance > Side panel and change its screen location. This browser-level setting controls where the panel appears; the Reading Mode View option controls whether Reading Mode uses that panel or the full window.
For frequent study sessions, pin Reading Mode to the Chrome toolbar. Pinning makes the control easier to reach without opening the three-dot menu each time. The exact pin control is available from the Reading Mode interface when the feature is offered for the current page.

Full screen or Side panel: which view should you use?

Neither view changes the underlying website. They change how the extracted text is presented in Chrome. Choose Side panel for source checking and Full screen for uninterrupted reading of a page that works well in Reading Mode.

Reading Mode’s controls apply to the text inside Reading Mode. They do not change the typography of other Chrome tabs, the browser interface, or the normal version of the webpage.
Choose a typeface and text size
Use the font-style control to select the available typeface, then increase or decrease font size until paragraphs can be read without strain. A larger size can make a narrow Side panel easier to follow, while a smaller size can reduce scrolling on a long article.
Set a color theme
Select the color or theme control to choose the background and text treatment that is easiest to read in your surroundings. A darker theme can reduce glare in a dim room; a lighter theme may be clearer in bright conditions. Reading Mode’s theme does not switch Chrome’s entire interface.
Change line height and letter spacing
Increase line height when dense paragraphs are difficult to track. Letter spacing can help distinguish characters, particularly at small sizes or on low-contrast displays. If the panel becomes too tall because of extra spacing, widen it or reduce the text size rather than forcing the original page into a different layout.

Show or hide links and images
Desktop Reading Mode provides separate controls for displaying links and images in the extracted text. Keep links visible when you need to follow citations or definitions. Hide them when underlines and inline graphics interrupt close reading. Hiding an image in Reading Mode does not remove it from the source webpage; it only changes the simplified view.

These settings are presentation choices, not content filters. If an important paragraph, figure, or table is missing from the extraction, return to the normal page and use its original controls.
How do I make Chrome read a page aloud?
Open Reading Mode and select Play. Chrome begins spoken playback of the text shown in the Reading Mode view. This can support review while your eyes rest, but it should not be treated as a substitute for checking the original page when the extraction is incomplete.
Control playback
During playback, you can pause, move to the previous sentence, or advance to the next sentence. Use the speed control to slow difficult material or increase the pace for a review pass.
Choose a voice and language
Reading Mode lets you select or preview a voice and add a language. Chrome says natural voices for the current language download automatically. If that download fails, Chrome uses the system voice for that language instead. A missing natural voice therefore does not necessarily mean that spoken playback is unavailable.
Set text highlighting
Playback includes options for how the spoken text is highlighted. Choose the highlighting behavior that best matches your study method, such as tracking the current sentence while listening. The highlighting setting affects the Reading Mode display, not the original webpage.
If you hear the wrong language or voice, stop playback, open the voice and language controls, and preview the available choices. If the preferred natural voice cannot download, allow Chrome to use the system voice or continue reading visually.

A practical study workflow with the Side panel
The following sequence keeps the source and the readable text available without pretending that Reading Mode can replace every page function.

- Start from the source page. Open the article, documentation page, or other text-heavy material in desktop Chrome. Note whether the page contains login controls, forms, quizzes, maps, video, or other interactive elements that you may need later.
- Open Reading Mode. Use the context menu, address-bar icon, menu path, or the shortcut for your operating system.
- Select Side panel. In the Reading Mode settings, set View to Side panel. Widen the panel until lines are comfortable to scan.
- Remove visual friction. Set the font, size, theme, line height, and letter spacing for the session. Decide whether links and images should remain visible.
- Read in passes. Use the clean text for sustained reading. When a claim depends on a link, image, embedded media item, or page control, inspect that material in the original page beside the panel.
- Review by listening if useful. Select Play, choose the speed and voice, and use sentence navigation or highlighting to revisit difficult passages.
- Return to the normal page for actions. Submit forms, answer quizzes, use maps, sign in, pay, play media, or interact with page widgets in the original view.
This approach treats Reading Mode as a reading and review layer. It does not assume that extracted text contains every element or preserves every interaction from the source.

Google’s desktop guidance states: “This feature is not available to all websites.” Availability depends on whether Chrome can identify and extract suitable readable text. The feature may be incompatible with, or behave unexpectedly on, several types of pages:
- Video-focused websites
- Forums and discussion pages
- Image galleries
- Interactive maps
- Forms and quizzes
- Payment pages
- Login screens
A page can look like an article and still fail if its meaningful content is generated by controls, embedded applications, or a sign-in flow. When Reading Mode is missing from the menu or produces little text, the normal page is the authoritative version for that task.
Try selecting the article text
If the page contains a readable passage but Chrome does not expose Reading Mode, select the relevant text on the original page. Google suggests this as a way to trigger Reading Mode for some pages. After selecting the passage, try the Reading Mode entry point again.
Use the original page when extraction is incomplete
Missing headings, captions, tables, images, comments, or embedded material are signs that the simplified view is not sufficient. Keep the Side panel open if it helps with the text, but verify omitted material in the source page. For interactive tasks, close or ignore Reading Mode and work directly in the normal page.
Fix a missing or misplaced panel
If Reading Mode opens full screen, change View to Side panel in its settings. If the panel appears on an inconvenient side, use Settings > Appearance > Side panel to change its location. If you cannot find Reading Mode at all, try the alternate entry points and confirm that the current page is a text page rather than a login, payment, map, gallery, forum, form, quiz, or video-focused page.
Fix a shortcut conflict
On macOS the shortcut is Command + Option + R; on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS it is Alt + Shift + R. If another app responds first, use the right-click or menu path. An unexpected shortcut result does not by itself indicate a Reading Mode failure.
Accessibility and screen-reader navigation
Reading Mode’s visual controls can improve presentation, but they do not replace a user’s screen reader or its established navigation commands. Google documents platform-specific keyboard navigation for the text:
- macOS VoiceOver: Use VoiceOver with the left- or right-arrow command to move through the Reading Mode text.
- Windows and Linux: Use the up or down arrow, or Alt + Up Arrow and Alt + Down Arrow, according to the navigation mode in use.
- ChromeOS: Use Search + Up Arrow or Search + Down Arrow.
Screen-reader users should keep their normal VoiceOver, Narrator, Orca, or ChromeOS navigation workflow and treat Reading Mode as an alternate page presentation. If a control or piece of content is not exposed correctly in the simplified view, move to the original webpage.
How Android Reading Mode differs
Android uses a separate Reading Mode sheet, so desktop Side panel instructions do not apply. On an Android phone or tablet, open the page in Chrome, tap More beside the address bar, and tap Show Reading mode.
The Android sheet documents three typeface choices—Sans Serif, Serif, and Mono—along with an adjustable font size and Light, Sepia, or Dark backgrounds. This is a mobile reading surface rather than the desktop Side panel workflow. If you need the original page’s interactive controls, leave the sheet and use the normal page.
Decide when Reading Mode is the right tool
- Use Side panel when you are studying an article and expect to verify links, figures, or wording against the source.
- Use Full screen when the page extracts cleanly and uninterrupted reading matters more than seeing the original layout.
- Use the normal page for maps, forms, quizzes, payment steps, login screens, video interfaces, galleries, forums, or any task that depends on interaction.
- Use Play when spoken review helps, then check the source page for content that Reading Mode may not include.
The most reliable study habit is to switch views according to the task: Reading Mode for sustained text, the original page for context and interaction, and Side panel when both are needed at once.
