Chrome Reading mode removes much of a webpage’s layout so its text is easier to focus on. On a computer, open it from the page’s context menu, address bar, menu, or keyboard shortcut; on Android, use Chrome’s More menu and pull up the reading sheet. The available controls differ by platform, and some pages cannot be converted.
Open Reading mode on a computer
Open a webpage containing text in Chrome, then use whichever entry point is available:
- Right-click the page and choose Open in reading mode.
- Select the Reading mode control in the address bar, if it appears.
- Open More > More tools > Reading mode.
- Use the keyboard shortcut: ⌘ + Option + r on macOS, or Alt + Shift + r on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS.
Reading mode can open in an immersive full-screen view or in the side panel. Open its settings and choose Side panel to read beside the original page; Chrome saves your view preference. Drag the side panel’s border to make it wider. You can pin Reading mode for access from the toolbar.
Adjust the desktop reading view
Open Reading mode settings to change the font style, font size, color theme, line height, and letter spacing. You can also show or hide links and images. These settings change the text shown in Reading mode, not other content in Chrome.

Listen to the page in desktop Reading mode
Use the reading view’s playback controls to play or pause, move between sentences, change playback speed, and choose a voice. Voice highlighting can be set to adaptive, word, sentence, or off. Chrome says natural voices for the current language download automatically; if the download fails, it uses the system voice for that language. Use Reading mode on Android
- In Chrome on your Android device, open the page you want to read.
- Tap More > Show Reading mode beside the address bar.
- When the reading sheet appears at the bottom of the screen, pull it up to view the page text.
In the sheet, choose a Sans Serif, Serif, or Mono font, adjust the font size, and select a Light, Sepia, or Dark background.

Android listening is a separate feature
Chrome’s Android Reading mode instructions describe display controls, not the desktop Reading mode read-aloud interface. To hear a page on Android, Chrome separately offers Listen to this page, where available. Its Standard playback reads page text; AI playback generates a podcast-like conversation from a page. Google says Standard playback requires Make searches and browsing better to be on. AI playback also requires Chrome’s language to be English. Availability varies by site, and playback language support can change; check Google’s current Listen to this page instructions for the supported languages and current conditions.

Why Reading mode may not appear or show the text you need
Reading mode is not compatible with every website or page. Google warns that image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens may be unavailable or behave unexpectedly.

- If the page has useful text that is missing: on a computer, highlight the desired text on the original page to trigger Reading mode.
- If Reading mode still does not work on a computer: update Chrome, as Google recommends.
- If you are on Android: an unavailable-page message means Chrome cannot show Reading mode for that page.
- If the desktop shortcut opens Reading mode unexpectedly: another app, including voice-control software, may use the same shortcut.
