If your Chromebook shows “ChromeOS is missing or damaged”, Chromebook Recovery Utility can reinstall the operating system. Recovery is destructive: it removes the files stored on the Chromebook’s internal drive, then installs ChromeOS again. Back up anything you can still access before starting.
Google describes the operation plainly: “Recovery removes and reinstalls the OS.” Use the official Chromebook recovery instructions to choose between the newer internet-based process and recovery from a USB drive.

What Chromebook recovery does—and when to use it
Recovery replaces the Chromebook’s operating system with a fresh installation. It is intended for serious startup or system failures, including the “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” screen, when ordinary troubleshooting has not fixed the device.

Because recovery permanently erases the Chromebook’s internal storage, treat it as a last-resort repair rather than a routine reset. Downloaded files and anything else saved locally are removed. Files already synchronized to your Google account or stored in cloud services can normally be retrieved after you sign in again, but local-only files cannot be recovered through this procedure.

Try less destructive steps first
If the Chromebook still lets you sign in, turn it off and on again. If the problem remains, try a factory reset (Powerwash) using the Chromebook’s reset controls. Move to recovery only after those steps fail or the device cannot reach the normal reset process. Google’s staged troubleshooting guidance is available in its hardware and system problems help page.
Managed Chromebooks need administrator approval
A Chromebook enrolled by a school or employer may be subject to policies that affect recovery, enrollment, and access. Contact the organization’s administrator before erasing it. The administrator may need to confirm ownership, preserve management settings, or arrange a replacement.
Choose internet recovery or USB recovery
Newer supported Chromebooks may be able to download ChromeOS directly while in recovery mode. If that option is missing, the Chromebook cannot connect to the internet, or the model does not support it, create recovery media on another computer and reinstall from USB. Google does not state that either method works on every model.

The internet route is simpler when it appears and the Chromebook has a working connection. USB recovery is the fallback when internet recovery is unavailable or inaccessible, but it adds a second computer, model selection, and a drive that will be erased.
Which option should you pick?
Choose internet recovery when the recovery screen explicitly offers Recover using internet connection and the Chromebook can get online. It avoids preparing removable media and does not require buying or borrowing a flash drive. Choose USB recovery when that choice is absent, the device cannot reach the internet, or Google’s on-screen instructions direct you to external media.
USB recovery is not automatically more powerful than internet recovery; it is simply a different delivery method for the ChromeOS installation. Both methods erase the Chromebook’s internal storage. Neither method is guaranteed for every older model, and Google does not publish a universal success rate or completion-time estimate.
Prepare before you erase anything
- Back up local data. Copy downloaded files and other locally stored documents to cloud storage or another device if the Chromebook still starts. Check the Downloads folder and any Linux or Android files you deliberately kept on local storage.
- Record account details. Make sure you know the Google account credentials needed to sign in after installation. If the Chromebook belongs to an organization, do not assume your personal account can enroll it again.
- Disconnect accessories. Remove mice, external drives, hubs, memory cards, and other peripherals before entering recovery mode. Leaving accessories attached can trigger a prompt to remove connected devices.
- For USB recovery, obtain the right equipment. You need the affected Chromebook, another Chromebook or a Windows/Mac computer with Chrome, and a USB flash drive holding at least 8 GB. Creating recovery media erases the selected drive, so do not use one containing files you need. A generic 8 GB-or-larger drive is sufficient; Google does not specify a particular brand, speed, or model.
- Check whether internet recovery is offered. If you can reach the recovery screen, look for Recover using internet connection before preparing USB media.
- Plan for a stable power source. Keep the Chromebook connected to its charger if possible. An interrupted installation can leave you at the recovery screen again, so avoid closing the lid or deliberately powering down during the process.
The only hardware purchase typically added by the USB route is a compatible flash drive. If you can use internet recovery, you may not need to buy anything. If you do buy one, select a drive with at least 8 GB and remember that creating media permanently erases its existing contents.

Use internet recovery when the option is available
- Disconnect accessories from the Chromebook.
- Enter recovery mode using the instructions for your device in the next section.
- At the recovery screen, select Recover using internet connection.
- Follow every on-screen instruction. The Chromebook downloads the required files and reinstalls ChromeOS.
- Allow the Chromebook to restart and finish the process. Do not interrupt it while installation is in progress.
The Chromebook may restart on its own as it completes the installation. The exact wording, confirmations, and progress display can change, so follow the current screen instead of looking for a fixed sequence copied from an older guide.

FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
If the internet choice does not appear, do not keep searching for a hidden setting. Use USB recovery instead, provided your model and equipment support it. Older Chromebooks may lack internet recovery, and some older models may no longer be recoverable.
Enter Chromebook recovery mode
The key combination depends on the device type. Start with the method that matches your hardware; if it does not produce the recovery screen, check the model’s support documentation rather than repeatedly trying random combinations.
Most Chromebook laptops
- Turn the Chromebook off.
- Hold Esc + Refresh (the Refresh key has the circular-arrow symbol).
- While holding those keys, press Power.
- Release Power, then release the other keys when the recovery message appears.
Models using the Maximize key
Some models use Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. Hold that combination, press Power, release Power, and release the other keys when the recovery screen appears.

Chromeboxes and Chromebits
These devices use a dedicated recovery-button procedure, generally accessed with a paper clip or a similar narrow object. The exact location and sequence vary by model. Verify the device-specific instructions before pressing a recovery button; do not assume the laptop key combinations apply.
Create a USB recovery drive
Use the working computer—not the Chromebook displaying the error—to create the media.
- On the working computer, install and open Google Chrome if it is not already installed.
- Install and launch Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Select Get started.
- Choose the affected Chromebook’s model from the list, or enter its model number. Google says the model number appears at the bottom of the error screen. Select the exact model rather than a similar-looking device.
- Insert the USB flash drive that holds at least 8 GB and can be erased.
- Select that drive in the utility, continue, and choose Create now.
- Wait until the utility says the recovery media is ready.
- Remove the USB drive only after the utility gives you the instruction to do so.
Model selection is critical: the drive must contain recovery software for the affected Chromebook. If you are unsure which entry matches the model number, stop and verify it from the error screen or the manufacturer’s documentation instead of guessing.

How to avoid selecting the wrong drive
Unplug other removable drives before opening the utility, then compare the displayed drive name and capacity with the flash drive you intend to erase. Recovery Utility does not preserve the files on the selected drive. If more than one removable disk is connected, a mistaken selection can destroy unrelated data.

Do not use the failing Chromebook to create its own recovery media. The creation step must run on another Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed. The affected model’s number, not the working computer’s model, determines which image the utility downloads.
Reinstall ChromeOS from the USB drive
- Disconnect all accessories from the affected Chromebook.
- Insert the recovery USB drive you just created.
- Enter recovery mode using the appropriate key or button sequence.
- At the recovery screen, select Recover using external disk.
- Follow the prompts shown by the Chromebook. Wording and available choices can change, so use the instructions displayed on your device rather than relying on a memorized sequence.
- Let the process complete without removing power or the USB drive. The Chromebook will restart when recovery has finished or when the screen instructs you to continue.
Recovery erases the Chromebook’s internal storage. The USB drive is used to supply installation media; it is not a backup of your personal files. If the Chromebook returns to the recovery screen, read the exact error before retrying so you can address the relevant cause rather than repeating the same failed attempt.
Fix common Chromebook Recovery Utility errors
“An unexpected error has occurred”
Google’s first recommendation is to erase the recovery storage device and retry the process. If the same error returns, create the media on another USB flash drive. Some drives do not work reliably with recovery, even when their stated capacity is sufficient.
“Please remove all connected devices and start recovery”
Power the Chromebook down, disconnect every accessory—including hubs, external storage, mice, and memory cards—and enter recovery mode again. Leave only the required recovery drive connected when you retry USB recovery.
“The device that you inserted doesn’t contain ChromeOS”
Confirm that the inserted drive is the one used to create the recovery media. If it is, erase that drive and recreate the media. If the message persists, try another USB drive and verify that you selected the affected Chromebook’s exact model in the utility.
Security-module error
For a work- or school-managed Chromebook, contact the administrator. For a personally owned device, Google directs users to its Help forum; if the issue remains unresolved, contact the Chromebook manufacturer for repair options.
Recovery still fails
After following the documented steps, trying a different USB drive, and confirming the model, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. Some older devices may no longer receive updates or may not be recoverable. Do not assume that repeatedly recreating the same media will solve a hardware or security-module fault.
What to do after ChromeOS is restored
Complete the initial setup, connect to the internet, and sign in with the appropriate Google account. Restore files from your backup or cloud storage. A managed Chromebook may need to be re-enrolled by its administrator before it can be used for school or work.

Recovery returns the operating system to a clean installation; it does not restore locally stored downloads, custom settings, or applications that were not synchronized. Reinstall Android or Linux applications only after the Chromebook has completed setup and updated itself. If an administrator manages the device, let that administrator control enrollment and policy restoration.
Reuse the USB drive as ordinary storage
The USB remains recovery media after installation. To erase that recovery partition and return the drive to ordinary use:
- On a computer with Chromebook Recovery Utility installed, open the utility.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Erase recovery media.
- Select the correct USB drive and confirm.
- Let the utility erase the drive. This removes everything on that USB drive.
If the drive does not appear as normal storage afterward, use the operating system’s disk-formatting tool to format it. Double-check the selected disk before erasing; formatting the wrong drive destroys its contents.
A practical decision checklist
- Can you still sign in? Restart first, then try a factory reset before recovery.
- Have you copied local files somewhere safe? Recovery removes them from internal storage.
- Is the Chromebook managed by a school or employer? Contact the administrator first.
- Does recovery mode offer Recover using internet connection, and can the Chromebook access the internet? Use that route if supported.
- If internet recovery is absent, do you have another Chromebook or a Windows/Mac computer with Chrome and an erasable USB drive of at least 8 GB? Create USB media.
- Did you select the exact model number shown on the error screen? Verify before creating the drive.
- Did recovery fail with a documented error? Follow the matching fix, try another drive when advised, then escalate to the administrator or manufacturer.
For the complete, model-sensitive procedure and the latest wording of recovery screens, consult Google’s Recover your Chromebook guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Does Chromebook Recovery Utility delete everything?
Yes. Recovery permanently erases the Chromebook’s internal storage, including downloaded files and other local-only data. Back up anything you can still access before starting. Cloud-synchronized files can be downloaded again after you sign in.
Can I recover without another computer?
Sometimes. Newer supported models may show Recover using internet connection in recovery mode. If that option is unavailable or the Chromebook cannot get online, USB recovery requires another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome.
How large must the recovery USB be?
Use an erasable USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Google does not require a particular brand, speed, or model. Creating the media erases the drive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Google says the model number appears at the bottom of the error screen. Use that exact number when Recovery Utility asks you to select a model; choosing a similar device can produce unusable media.

Why does the USB say it does not contain ChromeOS?
Make sure you inserted the same drive used to create the recovery media. If it is the correct drive, erase it and recreate the media. Try another USB drive if the message continues, and recheck the model selection.
Is recovery the same as a factory reset?
No. A factory reset is the less destructive troubleshooting step to try while the Chromebook remains usable. Recovery reinstalls ChromeOS from internet or external media and is intended for more serious system failures.
What if the Chromebook belongs to my school or employer?
Contact the administrator before recovery. Managed devices may need approval, ownership verification, or administrator-led re-enrollment after the operating system is restored.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will recovery remove files in Downloads?
Yes. Recovery erases the Chromebook’s internal storage, including downloaded and other local-only files. Back them up first when possible.
Do I need to buy a USB drive?
Only for the USB method, and only if internet recovery is unavailable or unsupported. Use an erasable drive with at least 8 GB; no specific brand is required.
Can I use the affected Chromebook to create recovery media?
No. Create the USB on another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed.
What happens to a managed Chromebook after recovery?
Contact the school or employer administrator first. The device may require administrator approval and re-enrollment.
Why is my recovery USB rejected?
Verify that it is the drive created by Recovery Utility, recreate it after erasing it, confirm the exact model, or try another USB drive.
The Bottom Line
Recovery is the definitive ChromeOS reinstall, but it is also destructive. Back up local files, try a restart and factory reset first, and obtain administrator approval for managed devices. Use internet recovery when the Chromebook offers it; otherwise create USB media with Recovery Utility, an exact model selection, and an erasable 8 GB-or-larger drive. If documented fixes and another drive do not help, contact the manufacturer.
