Chrome DevTools is useful for checking responsive layouts and simulating selected mobile conditions, but Device Mode does not run your page in Safari, Firefox, or on an actual phone. Use it for a fast first pass, then test in the browser and on the device that matter whenever engine, operating-system, or hardware behavior could change the result.
What Chrome DevTools can—and cannot—test
Device Mode lets you resize the viewport, select device profiles, and simulate selected conditions such as network or CPU throttling and sensor settings. It is useful for repeatable responsive-design checks. It does not turn Chrome into another browser engine, nor does a device preset reproduce every property of physical hardware. Chrome describes Device Mode as “a first-order approximation” of how a page looks and performs on a mobile device (Chrome Device Mode documentation).
For browser-specific CSS or API compatibility, reproduce the issue in the target browser. For touch, hardware, operating-system integration, or performance quirks, test on a real device. Chrome’s cross-browser guidance explains the limits of emulators and the role of real-device testing (Chrome cross-browser testing guide).
Run a responsive check in Device Mode
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools. Use the Elements panel to inspect the DOM and CSS, and the Console to inspect runtime messages or run JavaScript. The DevTools overview describes these core panels (Chrome DevTools overview).
- Enable the device toolbar. Select the device toolbar toggle in DevTools, then choose Responsive dimensions. Resize the viewport across the breakpoints relevant to your layout rather than checking only one phone-sized width.
- Check a specific device profile. Choose a listed profile for a focused viewport and selected device characteristics. Treat it as a simulation, not proof that the page behaves identically on that phone or in its default browser.
- Simulate conditions relevant to the bug. Where appropriate, use Device Mode’s available CPU and network throttling or sensor settings. These help expose some issues under constrained conditions; they do not reproduce every aspect of a physical phone.
- Inspect the failing behavior. Use Elements for layout and style differences, Console for JavaScript errors, Network for request failures, and performance tooling when loading or execution is the symptom.
- Repeat at the breakpoints that matter. Note the viewport and conditions that expose the issue so another developer can reproduce the check.
Add a device profile when needed
If the profile you need is not listed, open DevTools Settings, select the Devices tab, enable an available device or add a custom device with its details, then select it in Device Mode. The custom-device workflow is documented by Chrome (customize device settings).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A custom profile is useful for checking a specified viewport or device configuration. It does not recreate the physical device’s hardware or make the page run in Safari, Firefox, or another browser engine.
Validate in the actual target browser
When a defect may depend on browser-engine behavior, API support, or differences in CSS implementation, open the page in the target browser and reproduce the same steps. A Chrome device preset only changes simulated characteristics; it cannot verify that another browser supports the same APIs or renders the page the same way.

For a check that depends on touch, hardware, performance, or operating-system behavior such as the virtual keyboard, use the relevant real device when practical. Choose coverage based on the risk being tested, not screen size alone.
Inspect a live Android Chrome tab remotely
Chrome DevTools can inspect a page running in Android Chrome from your development computer. Unlike Device Mode, this workflow uses the connected phone to run the page. Follow Chrome’s current remote-debugging setup (remote debugging Android devices):

- Enable USB debugging on the Android device.
- Connect the phone to the development computer with a data-capable USB cable and allow the requested debugging authorization on the phone.
- Open Chrome’s device inspection workflow on the computer and discover the connected device.
- Find the relevant Chrome tab and select Inspect to open DevTools for that live tab.
- Reproduce the issue on the phone while inspecting its page from the computer.
This is specifically a workflow for a live Android Chrome tab; it does not substitute for testing in other mobile browsers or operating systems. A USB cable is relevant to this connection-based workflow, not to ordinary Device Mode checks.
Choose the right level of coverage
| Approach | Useful for | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome Device Mode | Fast responsive iteration, viewport checks, and selected simulated conditions. | Behavior in another browser engine or on actual phone hardware. |
| Browser emulator | Emulating a browser environment for selected compatibility checks. | Complete equivalence to a real device; capabilities depend on the emulator. |
| Whole-device simulator | Some operating-system-level or device workflows, depending on the simulator. | Every hardware and real-world behavior of a physical device. |
| Cloud testing | Broader browser/device coverage or repeatable runs, depending on the service. | Coverage not included in the service’s current offerings; verify supported browsers and devices before relying on it. |
| Real browser on a real device | High-confidence checks for engine, OS, touch, hardware, and platform-specific behavior. | All possible device and browser combinations from a single test. |
For each test, identify the browser engine and version, operating system and device, whether execution is simulated or real, and whether manual spot checks are enough or repeatable automated runs are required. Chrome’s cross-browser guide distinguishes browser emulators, device simulators, cloud testing, and real-device checks; the appropriate choice depends on the behavior under test.

If you need an image of a page rather than interactive cross-browser debugging, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. For example, the cURL request below saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you need. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. It captures a page—it does not replace testing an interactive page in the target browser or on a real device. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome Device Mode test my site in Safari or Firefox?

Does a custom device profile reproduce a physical phone?
No. It helps approximate a specified configuration, but it does not reproduce every hardware or operating-system property.
Can I inspect a page running on an Android phone with DevTools?
Yes. Enable USB debugging, connect and authorize the device, then inspect the relevant live Chrome tab through Chrome’s remote-debugging workflow.
