Use each service’s temporary mode before you send your first message: ChatGPT’s Temporary chat, Gemini’s Temporary Chat, or Meta AI’s Incognito Chat where that feature is available. These controls keep a conversation out of normal history or activity, but they do not mean that no data is processed or that no provider-held copy exists. OpenAI, Google, and Meta describe different retention and privacy limits, so choose the mode that matches what you need to protect.
What “without saving chats” actually means
There are three separate questions behind the phrase “not saved”:

- Visible history: Does the conversation appear in the service’s ordinary chat list or activity page?
- Personalization and model improvement: Can the conversation shape your future responses, memories, recommendations, or model training?
- Provider retention: Does the company keep a copy temporarily for safety, service operation, feedback processing, or another stated purpose?
A temporary mode usually addresses the first question and may address the second. It does not automatically answer the third. The providers’ published descriptions are service-specific and are not independent technical audits. Treat the controls as ways to limit ordinary history and personalization, not as a guarantee that a message is never processed or retained.
Start the temporary mode before entering sensitive text. If you begin a normal conversation and switch settings later, the earlier messages may already have been handled under the normal chat controls.

ChatGPT: start a Temporary chat
Steps
- Open ChatGPT and start a new chat.
- Select Temporary before writing the first prompt.
- Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Send your prompt only after confirming the mode and personalization choice.
The personalization choice is made for that conversation and cannot be changed after the conversation begins. If the option is missing, update or reload the app, try the web interface, and check whether your account or workspace has received the current interface.
Personalized versus Unpersonalized
Unpersonalized Temporary Chat does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins. It is the closer fit when you want a one-off answer without carrying your existing ChatGPT setup into the conversation.
Personalized Temporary Chat can refer to existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. It does not create or update memories while the conversation remains temporary. Choose it when you want your established preferences to influence the answer but do not want this conversation to add new memories.

OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history unless you save them, and they are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary. OpenAI also says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. “Up to 30 days” is a provider-stated maximum for that safety copy, not a promise that every temporary conversation is stored for exactly that period.

If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular conversation. From that point, the account’s ordinary data controls and any applicable workspace rules apply. Saving is therefore a status change, not merely a way to bookmark a hidden conversation.
Third-party actions and plugins
If a GPT or other ChatGPT feature sends information to a third party through an action, that recipient’s privacy policy controls what happens after the transfer. A Temporary setting inside ChatGPT cannot impose OpenAI’s retention terms on another company. Avoid entering information that you would not want an external service to receive, and review the action’s destination when the interface identifies one.
Gemini: use Temporary Chat
Steps
- Open Gemini in the app or web interface.
- Start a new conversation and choose Temporary Chat.
- Confirm that the temporary indicator is active before sending your prompt.
- Use the conversation for the one-off task, then close it without copying sensitive material into a normal chat.
Google’s labels and placement can change by app version, account, region, and rollout. If you cannot find Temporary Chat, look in the new-conversation controls rather than assuming that a normal chat has temporary treatment.

Google says Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or in Gemini Apps Activity. Google also says they are not used to personalize the Gemini experience or to train Google AI models. This makes Temporary Chat the appropriate starting point for a prompt that should not shape future Gemini personalization.

Google says temporary conversations are kept for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback. That figure describes Gemini Temporary Chat’s published service retention, not all data associated with a Google account, device, browser, or another Google product.
Managing older Gemini activity
Temporary Chat is separate from the controls for conversations you already had. In Gemini Apps Activity, Google provides tools to review and delete activity, change the auto-delete timing, and control whether data is used to improve Google AI. Use those controls for existing records; do not assume that changing an activity setting retrospectively erases every copy unless the current interface explicitly confirms it.
Turning off a future activity option and starting a Temporary Chat solve different problems. One manages account activity settings; the other starts a conversation with the temporary handling Google describes.
Meta AI: look for Incognito Chat
Where it is available
Meta announced Incognito Chat with Meta AI on May 13, 2026, for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. The announcement described a staged rollout over the coming months. Availability can therefore differ by account, country, app version, and rollout stage. Do not assume that a Meta AI conversation in another surface has the same treatment.

Steps when the option appears
- Open Meta AI in WhatsApp or open the Meta AI app.
- Start a new AI conversation.
- Choose Incognito Chat if the option is shown.
- Check that the incognito indicator remains visible before entering your prompt.
- Send only the information needed for the task, then leave the conversation when finished.
If Incognito Chat is not displayed, the feature may not have reached your account or region. Keep the app current and check again later; do not treat an ordinary Meta AI thread as incognito merely because it is short-lived on screen.
Meta’s description of the mode
Meta says Incognito Chat is a private, temporary conversation visible only to the user, that messages disappear by default, and that conversations are not saved. Meta also says the messages are processed in a secure environment that Meta cannot access. Those are Meta’s published product claims, not an independent verification of the underlying system.
The announcement does not establish that every Meta AI surface, feature, or account has the same behavior. Keep the claim limited to Incognito Chat in the WhatsApp and Meta AI app rollout described by Meta.

The numbers in the table are not comparable measurements. OpenAI’s 30-day figure concerns a safety copy, while Google’s 72-hour figure concerns responding and processing feedback. Meta’s announcement gives no matching number. A shorter published period is not, by itself, proof that one service is safer for every kind of information.

You only want the chat out of the visible list
Use ChatGPT Temporary, Gemini Temporary Chat, or Meta AI Incognito Chat where available. Confirm the indicator before sending anything. For ChatGPT, do not save the conversation afterward if you want it to remain temporary.
You do not want previous preferences influencing the answer
Choose ChatGPT’s Unpersonalized option. It excludes memory, custom instructions, and plugins for that temporary conversation. Gemini’s Temporary Chat is designed not to personalize the Gemini experience. Meta’s announcement does not describe equivalent personalization switches, so avoid assuming that Incognito Chat has the same controls.
You want to prevent model-improvement use
Google says Gemini Temporary Chats are not used to train Google AI models, and OpenAI says ChatGPT Temporary Chats are not used to improve OpenAI models while temporary. Meta’s Incognito announcement makes the privacy and disappearance claims quoted above but does not provide an equivalent model-training statement. Keep each provider’s promise separate rather than applying one service’s policy to another.

A temporary mode is a poor fit for work you need to retrieve. In ChatGPT, saving explicitly converts the conversation into a regular chat and changes the applicable handling. For Gemini and Meta AI, the cited descriptions do not establish a comparable permanent-save workflow. Copy only the minimum non-sensitive result you need into a location whose retention policy you understand.
Troubleshooting when a temporary control is missing
- Check the exact label: Look for “Temporary,” “Temporary Chat,” “Personalized,” “Unpersonalized,” or “Incognito Chat.” A generic new-chat button is not proof that temporary handling is active.
- Update the app: Feature rollouts often depend on the installed version. Restart after updating and check the new-conversation screen again.
- Try the other supported surface: A control may appear on the web interface but not in the mobile app, or in the app but not on the web. Availability can also differ between personal and managed workspace accounts.
- Check region and account rollout: Meta specifically described Incognito Chat as staged. The same account may see a feature later than another account in a different region.
- Start over if you selected the wrong mode: In ChatGPT, the Personalized/Unpersonalized choice cannot be changed after the first message. Open a new Temporary chat instead of continuing a conversation that started with the wrong setting.
- Do not rely on deletion alone: Deleting a visible chat, changing auto-delete timing, and starting a temporary chat are different actions. Use the control that addresses the specific data-handling outcome you want.
A practical privacy checklist
- Open a fresh conversation rather than repurposing an existing thread.
- Activate the service’s named temporary mode before typing.
- Read the personalization choice, especially in ChatGPT.
- Remove names, account numbers, precise addresses, private keys, health details, and other information that is unnecessary for the answer.
- Check whether a plugin, GPT action, connector, or other feature sends data to another company.
- Do not save or convert the chat if your goal is to keep it out of ordinary history.
- Use the provider’s activity-management tools separately for older conversations.
- Recheck the live interface and privacy wording when the information is especially sensitive, because labels, retention statements, and rollout status can change.
What these modes cannot promise
Temporary controls do not make a prompt anonymous, eliminate operational logs, or override a third party’s policy. They also do not make an unsafe prompt safe. A provider may need to process the text to generate a response, detect abuse, maintain the service, or handle feedback. The published retention windows and disappearance claims describe each provider’s stated behavior, not a universal technical standard.
For confidential business, legal, medical, or financial material, minimize the data first. Use placeholders, redact identifying details, and ask whether an AI service is approved for that category of information. The strongest privacy improvement is often sending less information, regardless of which temporary switch is available.
Bottom line
Start in the dedicated temporary mode, not in a regular chat: ChatGPT Temporary with the correct personalization choice, Gemini Temporary Chat, or Meta AI Incognito Chat when your account has received it. Then interpret “not saved” narrowly. ChatGPT may retain a safety copy for up to 30 days and allows saving into regular history; Gemini says it may retain a temporary conversation for up to 72 hours for response and feedback processing; Meta says Incognito messages disappear by default but has not published a matching numeric period in the cited announcement. Those distinctions are why temporary chat is a useful privacy control, but not a guarantee that no information is processed or retained.
