What a YouTube customization extension can change
A browser extension runs in your browser and modifies the YouTube pages you view. Depending on the extension, it can alter presentation without changing your account, subscriptions or YouTube server settings. Common controls include:

- Page layout: home-page grid density, classic-style home, search, channel or Explore pages, and older watch-page arrangements.
- Player size and position: small, wide, mini or pinned players, plus alternative fullscreen behavior.
- Appearance: dark themes, custom colors, classic logos and favicon options.

These controls are independent. An extension may reproduce a classic watch page but not the exact old home page, or provide a dark theme without changing the grid. Choose the tool by the change you actually want rather than by the broad promise of “old YouTube.”

Store metadata is volatile. Before installing, open the current listing for your browser and check its version, last-update date, permissions, supported browsers and recent user reports. A feature shown in a listing may not work on every YouTube page or after a later YouTube redesign.

How to compare candidates before installing
Start with the desired layout change
If your main goal is a denser or more familiar home page, look for an explicit grid control. YouTube Redux documents a choice of one to ten videos per row, with four as the default in its listing. If you want to hide recommendations or comments, a broad page-control extension such as Enhancer for YouTube may be a closer match. If you want a retro layout alongside filters and many smaller switches, Improve YouTube! documents that combination.
Check player behavior separately
“Small player,” “wide player,” “mini player” and “pinned player” are different behaviors. A small-player preset changes the normal watch-page dimensions; a mini or pinned player can remain visible while you scroll. Confirm the exact control in the extension’s settings rather than assuming that a classic theme includes it.
Verify browser availability
An extension listing for Firefox is not an installation path for Chrome, and a Chrome Web Store listing does not establish Firefox support. Search the official store for the browser you use, then compare the listing’s update date and version. If no current listing exists for your browser, do not install an unofficial copy from a download site.

YouTube’s interface is updated continuously. A recent update date, clear release notes and a permissions disclosure are useful signals, but none guarantees future compatibility. Treat the dates above as observations from 2026, not permanent specifications.

Review permissions before granting site access
An extension that changes YouTube must be able to read or modify the page, so some level of site access is expected. That access still deserves scrutiny because a browser permission can cover more than the page you intended.
What to inspect in a listing
- Host access: determine whether the extension requests access only to YouTube or to many sites.
- Optional permissions: distinguish permissions needed for the core layout from extras you may never use.
- Data practices: read the store’s data-use and privacy disclosures, and check whether the developer explains collection or sharing.
- Developer identity and update history: confirm that the listing is the maintained project you intended to install.
The Firefox listing for YouTube Redux reports required access to youtube.com and optional permission to download files and read or modify browser download history. Its developer says the extension does not require data collection. Those are listing disclosures that can change; verify them on the live listing before adding the extension. The Improve YouTube! listing also displays its requested permissions, which should be read in the same way.
Use Chrome’s site-access controls
Chrome lets you change an installed extension’s site access from its details page or from the toolbar. Depending on the extension and Chrome version, you can allow access on the current site, on specific sites, or on all sites. For a YouTube-only customization, choose the narrowest option that still enables the features you use. You can disable or remove the extension from Chrome’s extension-management page if you no longer trust or need it.
Remember managed computers
A school or workplace administrator may block extension installation or restrict permission changes. If the Add to Chrome control is unavailable or a policy message appears, the computer is managed; use an approved extension or ask the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

Install and configure an extension in Chrome
- Open the Chrome Web Store. Search for the exact extension name and open its official listing, not a third-party download page.
- Read the listing first. Check the supported browser, version, update date, feature description, permissions and data-use disclosures.
- Select “Add to Chrome.” Chrome displays the permissions requested by the extension.
- Confirm only permissions that make sense. Cancel if the access is broader than you are comfortable granting or unrelated to the advertised function.
- Open the extension from the toolbar. Pin its icon if necessary, then select its settings or options link.
- Make one change at a time. Enable the desired layout, player, theme or hidden-section option, reload the YouTube tab and observe the result.
- Restrict site access. In the extension’s Chrome details, set access to YouTube or the current site when that setting is available.
- Record a working configuration. If the extension has many switches, note which ones you enabled so you can restore the arrangement after an update.
Chrome may show a notice when an extension is unsupported or no longer meets current requirements. Its official guidance is to look for an alternative or remove the extension. Do not leave a disabled or broken extension installed solely because it once changed your layout.
Install and configure an extension in Firefox
- Open Mozilla Add-ons. Search for the extension and select its Firefox listing.
- Check the listing details. Read the feature description, version, last-update date, permissions and data information before selecting the add button.
- Review Firefox’s permission prompt. The prompt should match the access described in the listing. Cancel if it does not.
- Open the add-on’s settings. Firefox exposes the extension through the toolbar or Add-ons Manager; use the extension’s own options page for layout controls.
- Change the relevant option and reload YouTube. Some changes apply only after a page refresh or after opening a new YouTube tab.
- Revisit the listing after YouTube updates. Compare the current version and update notes if a previously working feature stops applying.
Chrome’s installation labels and permission controls should not be assumed to appear in Firefox. Use the controls and terminology shown by the browser you are actually using.
Configure the three common choices
YouTube Redux for a classic-style interface
Open YouTube Redux’s options and begin with the page or layout section. Select a classic or older watch-page variant if that is the part of YouTube you want to change. In the home-page grid setting, choose the number of videos per row; the listing describes a range from one to ten. Use the small-player preset if the standard watch player occupies too much vertical space.

If a page becomes difficult to navigate, turn off the last switch you changed rather than disabling every feature at once.

Enhancer for YouTube for player and page controls
Use the settings menu to select a dark or custom theme, then choose a wide or mini player according to how you work. Its page-element controls can hide recommendations, related videos, chat, comments and other sections. If you want a player that remains visible while scrolling, look for the mini or pinned-player control described in the current listing.
The Mozilla profile for the creator, Maxime RF, includes the statement: “I wanted to offer a useful extension people can trust.” The profile also describes dark themes, custom colors, expanded descriptions, newest-first comments and a player that can be pinned in a corner while scrolling. Treat the profile’s historical Mozilla Recommended Extensions designation as historical unless the current listing shows it again.
Improve YouTube! for many independent switches
Open the layout and style sections first, then evaluate the retro classic layout, player controls and filters individually. The listing’s “175+ useful / unique features” is the publisher’s own count, not a standardized measurement; a high count does not mean every option is useful for your setup. Its open-source and Recommended labels are also listing information that may change.
What “get the old YouTube layout back” really means
That request can describe several different frustrations: a home page with too many columns, a watch page that is too wide, comments that load endlessly, a missing classic logo, or recommendations that fill the screen. Write down the exact symptom before choosing an extension. A grid control may solve the first problem but do nothing for the player; a theme can change colors without restoring navigation; hiding related videos can remove content you still want.
Extensions reproduce selected visual or behavioral elements; they do not turn YouTube into a frozen copy of a particular year. YouTube can change markup, account experiments, advertising placements or navigation independently of the extension. The practical goal is a similar workflow, not a guaranteed pixel-for-pixel restoration.
Troubleshoot changes that do not appear
Confirm the option and reload
Open the extension’s own settings and verify that the relevant feature is enabled. Save if the settings page provides a save control, then reload the YouTube tab. Some options apply only to newly opened pages.
Test for an extension conflict
Two YouTube extensions may both rewrite the same player or page section. Disable one temporarily, reload YouTube and check whether the behavior changes. If the page works with only one enabled, keep the feature set from the extension that offers the controls you need and remove overlapping switches from the other.
Check the listing after a YouTube change
If a previously working feature stops after a YouTube redesign, open the extension’s store listing and check its current version, update notes and compatibility comments. Install an available update only from the official store. If the project is no longer maintained, choose another current listing rather than installing an unofficial patch.
Remove unsupported extensions in Chrome
Chrome can disable extensions that do not meet current requirements. Follow Chrome’s notice to find an alternative or remove the extension. A disabled extension cannot reliably restore a layout, even if its settings remain visible.
Separate account or page experiments from extension failures
Open YouTube in a private window or a fresh browser profile only if the extension is allowed there, then compare the same page. If the layout differs by account, device or YouTube experiment, the extension may not be the cause. Avoid changing several browser settings at once; isolate one variable and reload between tests.
A safe maintenance routine
- Review the live store listing whenever you install, update or reinstall an extension.
- Check the requested host access and optional permissions after major updates.
- Keep only the extensions that provide a feature you use; overlapping page modifiers make failures harder to diagnose.
- Prefer the narrowest Chrome site-access setting that supports your YouTube workflow.
- Disable or remove an extension that is unsupported, unexpectedly broad in its permissions or no longer maintained.
- Keep a note of your preferred settings so you can restore them after an update or browser reset.

Install one candidate first, configure only the change you need and evaluate it on the pages you regularly use. If it fails after a YouTube update, check the listing and permissions before adding another extension.
