How to Use Bluetooth Speakers with a PS5 Without Audio Delay

You cannot pair a Bluetooth speaker directly to a PS5 as a supported audio output. The workable wireless options are to route PS5 sound through a Bluetooth-capable TV or to add a compatible USB Bluetooth transmitter. Both can introduce delay. For rhythm, fighting and other timing-critical games, Sony recommends TV speakers or a soundbar connected by wired HDMI or digital optical audio.

What “without audio delay” really means on PS5

Bluetooth audio is not a native PS5 speaker feature. The console’s Bluetooth accessories support is not a general-purpose way to connect an ordinary Bluetooth speaker, and attempting to pair one from the console’s accessories menu is not a supported setup.

Instead, you must place another device between the PS5 and the speaker. Your television can receive PS5 audio over HDMI and transmit it to a paired Bluetooth speaker. Alternatively, a USB Bluetooth audio transmitter can connect to the PS5 and send sound wirelessly to a compatible speaker. Neither method guarantees zero latency: Bluetooth codec processing, television audio processing, transmitter design and the speaker itself all affect synchronization.

Sony’s AV sync guidance states: “If a Bluetooth audio device is connected, there may be a delay between the picture and sound due to the properties of Bluetooth.” It also says, “For games that are dependant on response time, we do not recommend you use a Bluetooth device and recommend that you use the TV speakers or a sound bar with a wired (HDMI cable/digital optical cable) connection instead.” The spelling “dependant” is Sony’s wording in that guidance.

Therefore, the practical goal is to reduce perceptible delay and choose the right connection for the game, not to promise that every Bluetooth setup will be perfectly synchronized.

Choose the connection that fits your priority

Route Extra hardware Delay risk Low-latency codec requirement Best use
PS5 → HDMI → Bluetooth-capable TV → speaker None if the TV and speaker are already compatible Medium to high; TV processing and Bluetooth can add delay Not necessarily shared or configurable Convenient casual gaming, television and video
PS5 → USB Bluetooth transmitter → speaker PS5-compatible transmitter; compatible speaker Potentially lower than an unoptimized TV route, but not guaranteed Transmitter and speaker must support the same low-latency codec Wireless play when you accept some compatibility testing
PS5 or TV → wired HDMI/optical soundbar or TV speakers Wired audio equipment if you do not already have it Lowest risk of Bluetooth delay; equipment processing can still matter None Rhythm, fighting, competitive and other response-sensitive games

A matched transmitter and speaker using a low-latency codec can improve synchronization, but only a particular device combination can show how it performs in your room. No universal “typical PS5 Bluetooth delay” figure has been established.

Option 1: Pair the speaker with your TV

This is the simplest workaround when your television supports Bluetooth audio output.

Before you start

  • Confirm that the TV supports sending audio to Bluetooth speakers or headphones. Some televisions include Bluetooth only for remotes or input devices, not audio output.
  • Connect the PS5 to the TV with HDMI and make sure the TV is displaying the PS5 input.
  • Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode and keep it close to the TV during setup.

Set up the TV route

  1. Open the TV’s Settings menu and find its Sound, Audio Output or Bluetooth Speaker section. Menu names vary by manufacturer and software version.
  2. Select the speaker from the TV’s available Bluetooth devices and complete pairing.
  3. On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  4. Set the output device to the HDMI-connected TV or audio system. If the PS5 presents an HDMI device type option, choose the setting that matches the TV or audio equipment.
  5. Play a game and a video with clear lip movements or sound effects. Compare the Bluetooth speaker with the TV’s built-in speakers so you can identify whether the wireless route is adding a noticeable offset.

Manage TV processing carefully

Television audio processing is a common source of additional delay. Look for a game mode or a reduced-processing sound mode, but do not assume that every “game” preset eliminates Bluetooth latency. Sony warns that Bluetooth can create picture/audio delay and that an A/V Sync adjustment can itself add output delay in game modes.

If voices or effects arrive late, inspect the TV’s A/V Sync, Audio Delay or similarly named control. A sync adjustment may align a film or broadcast, yet make interactive audio feel less immediate. Test the setting with a game rather than relying on a movie lip-sync test alone.

If the TV cannot output Bluetooth audio, or if its delay remains distracting after processing settings are adjusted, use the USB-transmitter or wired route instead.

Option 2: Add a USB Bluetooth transmitter to the PS5

A PS5-specific USB transmitter is a third-party workaround, not a Sony-guaranteed feature. One example is the Avantree C81, whose manual describes it as a PS5 Bluetooth audio adapter. The model’s documentation recommends pairing it with a speaker or headphones that support aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive for closer synchronization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility must be checked across the entire chain. Confirm that the transmitter currently supports PS5 audio, that it operates in the required USB mode, and that the speaker supports the same codec. A generic transmitter and a generic speaker may pair successfully while still producing obvious lag. Sony does not guarantee the compatibility or performance of third-party adapters.

Set up a transmitter

  1. Read the transmitter’s current PS5 instructions and identify whether it requires a USB-A or USB-C port, a particular operating mode or a separate power connection.
  2. Plug the transmitter into the PS5. Use the port and adapter arrangement specified by its manufacturer; do not assume every USB audio accessory behaves identically.
  3. Put the transmitter into pairing mode, then put the speaker into pairing mode. Wait for the transmitter’s indicator or status message showing a completed connection.
  4. On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the USB audio device if it appears. Confirm that game audio is routed through the transmitter rather than the TV.
  5. Check the transmitter and speaker specifications for a shared codec. For aptX Low Latency, both ends must explicitly support it; support on only one device does not create a low-latency link.
  6. Test a timing-sensitive sound effect in an actual game. If the delay is noticeable, try the manufacturer’s alternate operating mode or a different supported codec only if the documentation allows it.

How much can aptX Low Latency help?

Qualcomm publishes an approximate 40 ms latency figure for a transmitter using its aptX Low Latency encoder with a compatible Bluetooth device. That number is a technology specification, not an independent measurement of a PS5, a particular television or any named speaker. It is also not a promise that 40 ms will be imperceptible in every game.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Codec names can be misleading when equipment uses a fallback mode. Check the specifications for the exact transmitter and speaker, and verify the active mode if the manufacturer provides a status indicator or companion utility. A speaker advertising ordinary Bluetooth audio without explicitly naming aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive should not be treated as a low-latency model.

Option 3: Use wired audio when timing matters

For response-sensitive games, wired audio is the dependable choice in Sony’s guidance. Use the TV’s own speakers, or connect a soundbar by HDMI or digital optical cable. This avoids the Bluetooth link, although a TV or soundbar can still add processing delay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wired soundbar troubleshooting

  1. Connect the soundbar by HDMI or digital optical according to the television and soundbar manuals.
  2. If the soundbar has an HDMI input, try connecting the PS5 directly to that input when the soundbar and TV support the arrangement. Sony notes that this can improve delay in some systems.
  3. Open the TV’s A/V Sync or audio-delay controls and test changes with a game. The ideal value depends on the TV, soundbar, audio format and signal path.
  4. Keep the PS5’s output device set to the actual HDMI audio system being used, and verify that the TV is not simultaneously routing sound to a delayed Bluetooth speaker.

There is no single wired setting that fixes every television and soundbar combination. Treat direct-console routing and A/V Sync changes as troubleshooting steps, then keep the arrangement that responds correctly in your games.

Why Bluetooth delay varies

  • Codec and buffering: Bluetooth encodes, transmits and buffers audio. Different codecs and device implementations use different amounts of buffering.
  • Endpoint matching: A low-latency codec helps only when the transmitter and speaker both support it and actually negotiate that mode.
  • TV processing: Equalization, surround virtualization, volume normalization and other processing can delay sound before Bluetooth transmission.
  • Signal routing: A PS5-to-TV-to-speaker chain contains more processing stages than a direct wired connection.
  • Device firmware and behavior: Two products with the same codec label can still behave differently because of firmware and internal buffering.

Because these variables interact, a manufacturer’s codec claim cannot establish the result for your specific PS5 and speaker combination.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Identify the pairing point. Confirm whether the speaker is paired to the TV or to a USB transmitter. Do not expect the PS5 itself to accept it as a normal Bluetooth audio output.
  2. Establish a baseline. On a TV setup, switch temporarily to the TV speakers. This shows whether the Bluetooth link is responsible for the offset.
  3. Confirm PS5 routing. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and verify the selected HDMI or USB output. A correctly paired speaker produces no sound if the PS5 is still sending audio elsewhere.
  4. Check TV audio support. Make sure the TV supports Bluetooth audio output, not merely Bluetooth accessories. Review its sound-output menu and disable an unintended simultaneous output.
  5. Review A/V Sync settings. Test the TV’s sync control in small changes. Remember that a correction intended for video can reduce game responsiveness.
  6. Verify codec compatibility. With a USB transmitter, compare the transmitter and speaker specifications. Both must name the same low-latency codec; “Bluetooth” alone is not enough.
  7. Reduce processing. Use the TV or soundbar’s least processed game-oriented audio mode when available, then retest. Avoid stacking virtual surround, enhancement and synchronization features without testing each change.
  8. Try the wired baseline. Use TV speakers or wired HDMI/optical audio. If that fixes the timing problem, the Bluetooth path is the limiting factor rather than the PS5 game.
  9. Contact the accessory maker if necessary. Provide the exact PS5 software version, transmitter model, speaker model and connection mode. Third-party support is the appropriate source for adapter-specific pairing behavior because Sony does not guarantee those products.

Which setup should you use for different games?

Rhythm and music games

Use TV speakers or wired HDMI/optical audio first. Even a small, inconsistent offset can make note timing uncomfortable. Bluetooth is suitable only if you have tested the complete setup and the game provides an audio-calibration control that compensates reliably.

Fighting, racing and competitive shooters

Prefer a wired route when reaction timing matters. A matched low-latency transmitter and speaker may be acceptable for casual sessions, but codec support does not guarantee a result equivalent to wired audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Story games, menus and video

The TV Bluetooth route is often the most convenient when a small delay is not distracting. Check speech against lip movements and keep the arrangement if the offset is acceptable to you.

Late-night personal listening

If room-filling speaker sound is not required, a PS5-compatible USB wireless headset or an analog headset is another option. PlayStation’s FAQ says most USB and analog headsets are supported, while third-party Bluetooth headsets are unsupported. This is a separate personal-audio solution, not a way to make a Bluetooth speaker pair directly with the console.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching only in PS5 Bluetooth accessories: The console does not treat an ordinary Bluetooth speaker as a supported direct audio device.
  • Assuming successful pairing means low latency: A speaker can connect and play sound while remaining unsuitable for timing-sensitive games.
  • Buying a transmitter without checking the speaker: The low-latency codec must be supported at both ends.
  • Using a TV sync correction blindly: A/V Sync can change responsiveness, particularly in game modes.
  • Assuming all “aptX” labels are equivalent: aptX Low Latency and aptX Adaptive are specific capabilities; ordinary aptX does not by itself establish the same delay behavior.
  • Blaming the game before checking routing: Confirm the PS5 output device and test TV speakers before replacing equipment.

Bottom line for a no-delay PS5 setup

There is no supported Bluetooth-speaker arrangement that promises zero delay on every PS5 system. Pairing the speaker with a Bluetooth-capable TV is the easiest route when convenience matters. A PS5 USB Bluetooth transmitter paired with a speaker sharing aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive can reduce delay compared with an unoptimized Bluetooth chain, but it remains a third-party setup that requires compatibility checks. For games where sound timing affects play, follow Sony’s recommendation and use TV speakers or a wired HDMI/digital-optical soundbar.
