How to Use Blu-ray Bonus Features, BONUSVIEW Picture-in-Picture, and BD-Live

To use a Blu-ray extra, start with the disc’s own menu and case: the title determines whether it contains bonus features, BONUSVIEW picture-in-picture, or BD-Live. Your player must also support the relevant function. BONUSVIEW plays a secondary video window during the main program; BD-Live connects a compatible player to online disc content, so it additionally needs internet access and may depend on a service that is no longer available.

There is no universal remote-control sequence. Use the exact player manual for menu names and setup, and treat online availability as a separate question from player compatibility.

What the three terms mean

Blu-ray’s enhanced capabilities are not a guarantee that every disc includes every feature. The disc author decides which extras and interactive functions are present, while the player determines which of those functions it can run.

Bonus features

“Bonus features” is the broad category for supplemental material attached to a particular title. Examples can include behind-the-scenes programs, commentaries, deleted material, galleries, games, or interactive menus, but the exact set is title-specific. The Blu-ray Disc Association describes the format as supporting enhanced special features and interactive capabilities; it does not imply that a particular release contains a standard bundle.

BONUSVIEW and picture-in-picture

BONUSVIEW is the format term associated with picture-in-picture playback on compatible equipment. When a disc includes it, a secondary video stream can appear in a smaller window while the main movie continues. A commentary, alternate angle, making-of segment, or other supplementary view may use that window, but the disc’s own description is the authority. BONUSVIEW is not automatically present on every Blu-ray and is not the same thing as a television’s picture mode.

BD-Live

BD-Live refers to disc functions that obtain content over the internet or use other network-connected capabilities. A compatible player, a working network connection, and the disc’s own BD-Live application are required for online functions. The existence of a BD-Live logo on an older package does not prove that the publisher’s service still operates today.

Check compatibility before inserting the disc

Most failed attempts come from treating a title feature, a player capability, and an online service as if they were the same thing. Check each layer separately.

Sony BDP-S1700U Full HD 1080p Blu-ray DVD Player with HDMI Cable | Dolby Digital TrueHD/DTS, DVD Upscaling, Ultra-Compact, Triluminos Color, Front USB
  • Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
  • Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
  • Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
  • Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
  • Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
  1. Inspect the case and disc menu. Look for explicit labels such as “Bonus Features,” “BONUSVIEW,” “picture-in-picture,” “BD-Live,” or “network features.” If the packaging does not list a function, open the top-level disc menu and inspect its extras and setup areas.
  2. Identify the exact player model. Read the model’s manual, not just a retailer’s generic description. Confirm support for BONUSVIEW or picture-in-picture if you want a secondary video window, and support for BD-Live if you want network functions.
  3. Check the player’s network capability. BD-Live needs an internet-connected setup. A player that only plays local discs can still run ordinary extras and may support BONUSVIEW without supporting BD-Live.
  4. Allow for local storage requirements. Some BD-Live implementations use player storage for downloaded or temporary data. Consult the manual for the exact storage method, capacity requirement, and menu setting for your model.
  5. Separate service status from hardware support. A player can be fully compatible while an old title’s online service is unavailable. No general feature label can establish that a publisher still hosts a particular title’s content.

Open ordinary bonus features

Disc menus vary, but the process is consistent at a conceptual level: launch the disc, select its extras, and let the title identify what is playable on your equipment.

  1. Insert the Blu-ray and wait for the title menu to load.
  2. Choose an item such as Bonus Features, Extras, Special Features, or a similarly named menu entry. The wording is controlled by the disc author.
  3. Select the specific extra. A movie, audio commentary, gallery, game, or interactive item may open in its own menu.
  4. Use the player’s audio, subtitle, and playback controls as you would for the main program, unless the disc displays different instructions.
  5. Press the player’s menu or return command to leave the extra. If that command does not work, use the on-screen navigation supplied by the disc or consult the model manual.

When an extra is missing, first confirm that you are using the correct disc edition. A theatrical release, collector’s edition, regional release, and reissue can contain different material even when the film title is identical. Also check whether the item is stored under a submenu rather than on the first menu page.

Use BONUSVIEW picture-in-picture

BONUSVIEW works only when three conditions line up: the disc includes a picture-in-picture stream, the player supports the function, and the title’s application exposes a control for starting it. The format specification does not create a secondary video for discs that were authored without one.

Start from the disc’s feature menu

  1. Load the disc and open its Bonus Features or Interactive area.
  2. Look specifically for BONUSVIEW, Picture-in-Picture, Commentary Video, or an equivalent label. If the disc lists only an audio commentary, it may not have a video overlay.
  3. Start the main program or the feature identified by the disc. Some titles offer the secondary window from the extras menu; others expose it through an on-screen option during playback.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompt for activating the secondary stream. The exact button and menu path depend on the player and disc, so do not assume a universal remote shortcut.
  5. Use the player’s audio or subtitle controls to choose the available track for the secondary material, if the title provides those choices.

If the second window never appears

  • Recheck the packaging and disc menus to verify that the title actually includes BONUSVIEW.
  • Read the manual for the exact player model and search its index for “BONUSVIEW,” “picture-in-picture,” or “secondary video.”
  • Update the player only through the manufacturer’s documented procedure if the manual identifies a firmware requirement. Do not assume that an update can add a feature the hardware was never designed to support.
  • Try the disc on another confirmed-compatible player if you have access to one. This can distinguish a disc authoring issue from a player limitation.

A black or empty secondary window does not prove that the player is defective. It can mean that the disc is waiting for an interactive selection, that the secondary stream is unavailable at that point in playback, or that the player supports ordinary Blu-ray playback but not the title’s BONUSVIEW implementation.

Use BD-Live online functions

BD-Live is different from a locally stored extra. The player runs an application from the disc and, when the title requests it, reaches an online service. Because the process depends on a remote service, successful setup today does not guarantee access to content created for an older release.

Prepare the player

  1. Connect the player to the internet using the connection method supported by that model.
  2. Open the player’s network settings and complete its connection test. The manual may require an address, wireless credentials, or a wired connection.
  3. Find the BD-Live, internet access, or network-content setting and enable it if the model provides a separate control.
  4. Check the manual for required local storage. Insert or configure the specified storage device if the player needs one for downloaded data.
  5. Exit setup and restart the player if the manual instructs you to do so.

Launch the disc application

  1. Insert the Blu-ray and open the disc’s BD-Live, Online, or similarly named menu item.
  2. Accept any on-screen terms only if you are comfortable with the title’s network function. The disc, not the general Blu-ray format, determines what information or content the application requests.
  3. Wait for the connection attempt to finish. A first launch can take longer than a local menu because the player is contacting a remote service.
  4. Follow the title’s instructions for downloading content or entering its network feature.
  5. When finished, use the disc’s exit command and the player’s network or storage menu to remove downloaded data if the manual provides a cleanup option.

What a connection failure means

“Cannot connect” can indicate several different conditions: the player is offline, its network settings are wrong, BD-Live is disabled, required storage is missing, the disc application is incompatible with the player, or the title’s remote service has been retired. Check local connectivity and the model manual first. If those are correct and other discs work online, the remaining explanation may be the specific title’s service status; the format itself cannot restore a discontinued server.

BonusView versus BD-Live

Question BONUSVIEW BD-Live
Primary function Picture-in-picture playback with a secondary video window Internet-delivered content or other network-connected disc functions
Disc must include it Yes; the title must contain a secondary video feature Yes; the title must contain a BD-Live application or online function
Player requirement A compatible Blu-ray player with BONUSVIEW support A compatible Blu-ray player with BD-Live and network support
Internet connection Not required for the picture-in-picture function itself Required for online functions
Possible storage setup Determined by the player and disc implementation May be required; consult the exact player manual
Availability risk Usually tied to the physical disc and player capability Also depends on whether the title’s online service remains available

The practical comparison is therefore three-part: does the title include the feature, does the player support it, and, for BD-Live, does the online service still respond?

Troubleshoot by symptom

The extras menu is missing

  • Verify that the disc is the edition advertised with extras.
  • Return to the top-level menu; some items appear only after selecting a particular language, chapter, or setup option.
  • Check the case for a separate bonus disc. A package can advertise extras that are not on the movie disc itself.

BonusView is listed but unavailable

  • Confirm that the player manual explicitly supports BONUSVIEW or picture-in-picture.
  • Start the main feature before looking for the overlay control if the disc’s instructions place it during playback.
  • Try the disc’s own interactive menu rather than a generic player pop-up menu.
  • Test another known BONUSVIEW title only if you can verify that title’s feature and the second player’s compatibility; otherwise the comparison proves little.

BD-Live starts but cannot download

  • Run the player’s network test and confirm that it reaches the internet outside the disc application.
  • Recheck the player’s BD-Live permission and storage settings.
  • Restart the player and relaunch the disc application.
  • Try another BD-Live title if one is available. If only one old title fails, its online service may no longer be operating.

The player has no network option

That is a hardware or model limitation, not a menu mistake. You can still use locally stored extras and any supported BONUSVIEW function, but BD-Live online features require a compatible network-capable player.

Choosing a player for these features

If you are buying or replacing a player, do not rely on a generic “Blu-ray player” search result or a logo on a retailer page. Verify the exact model’s manual before purchase.

  • For picture-in-picture, look for explicit BONUSVIEW or secondary-video support.
  • For online disc functions, look for explicit BD-Live support and documented network connectivity.
  • Check whether the model needs internal, removable, or other local storage for BD-Live applications.
  • Read the manual’s supported-disc and interactive-function notes; a player can support Blu-ray playback while omitting a particular interactive capability.
  • Confirm that the connection method you need is supported, especially if your installation cannot use the player’s available network interface.

No single current model or feature matrix is established here. Support changes by model and firmware, so the model-specific manual remains the reliable compatibility document.

Why older discs can behave differently

Blu-ray interactive features are applications authored for the disc. The Blu-ray Disc Association’s BD-J application specification, dated March 2005, provides technical background for how disc applications and capabilities can be implemented. It is useful context, but it is not a current consumer troubleshooting guide and does not document the menu sequence for every player released since then.

That history explains why two discs can present different menus and why a player can handle one interactive title better than another. It also explains why BD-Live has an additional failure point: the physical disc may be intact while the external service it calls has been shut down or changed.

Use a simple decision path

  1. Want locally stored interviews, commentaries, or galleries? Open the disc’s bonus-feature menu. Internet access is not the starting requirement.
  2. Want a second video window while the main program plays? Confirm that the title lists BONUSVIEW or picture-in-picture and that the player manual confirms support.
  3. Want online material or a network game? Confirm BD-Live on the disc and player, connect the player to the internet, configure any required storage, and allow for the possibility that the title’s service is offline.
  4. Unsure which layer failed? Check in order: title labeling, player manual, local network, storage setup, then the availability of the remote service.

Key limitations to keep in mind

  • Feature names describe capabilities, not a promise that every release includes them.
  • There is no universal remote-control button sequence for all Blu-ray players and discs.
  • BONUSVIEW is a disc-and-player picture-in-picture function; it is not the same as a television display mode.
  • BD-Live requires a compatible network setup and may depend on a service that no longer exists.
  • A player manual for the exact model is more useful than a generic feature list when a menu or control is missing.
